Quiz: How Secure is Your Online Holiday Shopping? - Money Tip Tuesday

Making Money Personal

It's time to start shopping for the holidays again, are you ready? With online shopping, buying gifts for the holidays has never been easier. However, there is also some risk involved with scammers waiting to take advantage of your holiday spirit. We have a quiz for you to see if you know what to do to protect yourself and your finances while shopping online.  Links:  Listen to our fraud prevention podcast episode on Fraud Protection Tactics to Keep Your Family Safe with Jose Rivera Hernandez Follow our Facebook, Instagram and Twitter pages! Learn more about Triangle Credit Union Transcript: Welcome to Money Tip Tuesday from the Making Money Personal podcast.  Question 1: When shopping online is it better to use your debit card or your credit card?  It is better to use your credit card. If your debit card is compromised, scammers can take funds directly from your bank account, whereas with a credit card, it just goes on your credit. There are also laws that limit your liability with credit card fraud, so you're not financially responsible for unauthorized credit card use.   Question 2: You just received an email from someone claiming to be “Amazon” offering 75% off your next purchase if you click the link. You hover over the link and it does not go to Amazon. Should you:  Click the link  Report phishing  Forward it to your mom and see what she thinks  Reply to the email asking if this is real  The answer is B, report phishing. If you are not sure if an email is legitimate or not, it's better to be safe than sorry. Do not click the link or interact with the sender, and definitely do not forward it to your mom or anyone else. This email is likely from a scammer trying to get your personal information.   Question 3: You have just finished shopping and are about to check out when you notice that next to the URL there is a triangle with an exclamation mark and it says “Not Secure”. Should you:  Continue checking out and insert your payment method  Stop shopping and leave the page  Refresh the page  Add more items to your cart  You should stop shopping and leave the page. Never put in your financial information or any personal information if it says “Not Secure”. Make sure that the website URL you are shopping from starts with HTTPS and there is a padlock icon next to it. This means that any information that you put in is encrypted.  Question 4: Which of the following should you do before shopping online:  Update your browser and computer operating system  Connect to a public WiFi network  Make sure all of your passwords for online marketplaces are the same so you can login easier  All of the above  The answer is A: update your browser and computer operating system. Updating these ensures that your security is up to date and will give you more protection. You should not connect to a public WiFi network, as these are often unsecure which makes getting to your financial information easier. Do not use the same password for everything, because if one password is compromised, they all are. Use unique and complex passwords for each site.  Question 5: The hottest gift of the year is sold out, but you need to get it. You finally found a seller on eBay but they have marked it up 100%. They don't have any pictures of the gift except for one that came from the official website. You click on the seller's profile and they are new. Should you buy from them?  The answer is of course no. The seller is either a scammer or a scalper. In this case, you can't tell if the seller even has the item since the picture is from the official website and not from the seller. They might not even have the item. Or they are trying to take advantage of your holiday spirit and upcharge you by a lot. It is probably in your best interest to just wait until this item is back in stock.   That's it for this quiz, how did you do? Pinterest20 Facebook 0 Twitter 0 LinkedIn WhatsApp 20Shares Have you ever seen a “Not Secured” notification in front of a website URL on the address bar? What was your first thought when you saw that? If you are anything like me, you would have asked yourselves if you really want to click through to the website. Isn’t it? Now imagine if it was your website. A little while back, Google came out with an update that emphasized the need to provide a clean and secure experience to users. That was the first notification to websites to start looking at options to enhance the security of their website. Then in 2014, they announced HTTPS as a ranking signal. And then began the race. Who doesn’t want their Search engine rankings and that too on Google, to stay intact? There started the frenzy to get SSL Certificates for their websites and marketers quickly went onto get their websites HTTPS compliant. But was it really necessary? Does HTTPS help in Search Engine Rankings? One of the common questions that most bloggers have is “does SSL Certificates help in search engine rankings?”. Neil patel did a study and gathered some data that indeed proved that installing an SSL certificate could help you in your search engine results, albeit in a minor way. His study was done a little while back. And since that time there has been a few more significant changes. Browsers like Chrome and Firefox started shaming websites that were not HTTPS, by showing a “Not Secure” tag in the address bar. In this time, the impact that HTTPS has on search engine rankings have also increased. Some studies have indeed shown So what is this HTTPS thing all about? What is HTTPS? HTTPS stands for Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure and its main benefit is that it provides a secure connection to users on those pages where they share personal data. And in order for this to happen, you need to install an SSL certificate (Secure Socket Layer certificate). Its a protocol that HTTPS uses. In layman’s terms, it means that HTTPS encrpts the secured information that is exchanged between a web server and a browser, thereby keeping such information safe. This means that you website will be considered as a trustworthy one by people using it. Once you have installed an SSL certificate, browsers like Firefox and Chrome will show a security padlock in green, which basically proves that your website is trustworthy and secure. But what are the benefits of an SSL Certificate? Benefits of installing an SSL Certificate If you are an internet marketer or, Blogger, I am sure your business depends on your trustworthiness. Nearly two years ago, Google made a pledge: It would name and shame websites with unencrypted connections, a strategy designed to spur web developers to embrace HTTPS encryption. On Tuesday, it finally follows through. With the launch of Chrome 68, Google will now call out sites with unencrypted connections as “Not Secure” in the URL bar. The move flips the convention of how Chrome displays the security of sites on its head.

For Google Chrome users, that is indicated by a green lock symbol in the upper left corner. HTTPS encrypts the data from and to the website.  Chrome plans to use a bright red icon and a warning in the URL bar saying "Not Secure" to indicate a website's HTTP status and to warn users to be wary. Right now the indication is gray in color. Google will make the switch to use these indicators by October. If your website is not HTTPS already I strongly suggest you do so before a big red Not Secure sign is displayed when people visit your website. In this episode we talk about upcoming Google Chrome warnings that will be displayed for website forms not protected by SSLs and a little about Dropbox Paper. BBP : Episode 52 - Insecure Website Warnings & Dropbox Paper Updates Dropbox Paper has released some updates Users can now preview Dropbox Paper docuemnts before opening them. Very helpful for admins or project managers. Usera can also now create folders on mobile devives and move Paper documents to them. Great for those of us who work on phones or tablets a good portion of the time. And finally, users can now delete files on their mobile devices. A little less useful for many of us IT guys and creatives who NEVER delete anything, just archive it.  Google Chrome will now start displaying a "Not Secure" warning on webpages not protected by an SSL and including a form asking for passwords or credit card information. This means that if your site requires or requests any of this, the warnings will be shown to potential clients and other visitors.  I believe this is an incremental step towards Chrome requiring all sites to have SSLs in the very near future, with the next step probably being that ANY form will need to be protected by an SSL. This is a great time for you to get ahead of the inbound wave by activating an SSL on your site as soon as possible to take advantage of the extra search weight assigned by Google for sites with SSLs. It's also a great chance to take a look at current forms on your website and maybe change them to ask additional questions you may have ommitted due to not having and SSL in the past.   Keep in mind there are some obstacles beyond cost to purchasing and installing an SSL. More to come on that in a future episode.   Don’t forget to send us any suggestions for apps to review or people to interview.
