How can a historic church navigate a rapidly changing world without losing its soul? In this episode of the Future Christian Podcast, host Martha Tatarnic speaks with Archbishop Shane Parker, the newly elected Primate of the Anglican Church of Canada, about leading through transition, discernment, and hope for the church's future. Archbishop Parker shares the story of his unexpected election, reflecting on themes of surrender, vocation, and guiding change rather than being changed by circumstance. Together, they explore what it means to lead faithfully in a post-Christian context—one where the church no longer holds cultural prominence but still holds deep spiritual purpose. They discuss: The evolving role of Christianity in Canadian society What it means to be “first among equals” in Anglican leadership The spiritual practice of personal prayer and community intercession Why some leaders are called to stay instead of move on The challenge of guiding change before it overtakes the church How to reimagine church structures for relevance and sustainability The importance of friendship, pastoral care, and gathered community in thriving congregations His hope that the future of Christianity will embody the courage, compassion, and justice of Christ Parker offers both realism and hope: that the Anglican Church can rediscover its vitality by focusing on community, worship, and service — not nostalgia or institutional weight. Archbishop Shane Parker was elected the 15th Primate of the Anglican Church of Canada on June 26, 2025, and installed on June 29, 2025, at St. Paul's Cathedral in London, Ontario. Prior to being elected Primate, he had served as the Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Ottawa since 2020. Before that, he was dean of the Diocese of Ottawa and rector of Christ Church Cathedral for two decades. Born to Irish parents in Edmonton, Alberta, he grew up in western Canada. He worked as a labourer for several years before embarking on undergraduate and graduate studies in sociology at Carleton University. After working as a professional sociologist, he studied theology at Saint Paul University. He was ordained as a priest in 1987 in the Diocese of Ottawa, later serving as the diocesan archdeacon. Parker has an honorary doctorate from Saint Paul University, where he has served as a part-time professor of pastoral ministry and chairs its Anglican Studies Advisory Committee. A collection of his pastoral essays was published by Novalis in a book called Answering the Big Questions. He is a recipient of the Interfaith Ottawa Award, for devoted service to promoting interfaith dialogue and cooperation. Parker is married to Katherine Shadbolt, a lawyer specializing in family law and mediation. He has three adult children and three grandchildren. He is handy, enjoys physical work and is most comfortable in natural places. Mentioned Resources:
In this week's episode of Before You Cut Bangs, Laura and Claire get brutally honest about what happens when life hits you with more plot twists than a sad country music song.Laura opens up about walking through a season where everything changed at once — a move, personal upheaval, emotional whiplash — while Claire deals with her own chaos (think: her hardwood floors literally being ripped out).Together, they unpack the real question: Why do we show up as totally different versions of ourselves when we're in crisis versus when life is calm? From stress responses to survival mode to the weird ways chaos makes us react, this episode is part therapy, part comedic relief, and part permission slip for anyone who feels like they're “handling it” but also maybe… not handling it.As we move into the holiday season — a time when chaos tends to multiply — Laura and Claire talk about: • What actually makes a day feel chaotic • Why small things hit so much harder when you're already at capacity • How to give yourself grace when you're not the “chill version” of yourself • The little anchors that help you come back to center • Why going through hard seasons doesn't make you dramatic — it makes you humanIf you're going through a lot right now, this one will make you feel a little less alone and a lot more normal. Grab your headphones, pour something warm, and let's laugh our way through the mess.____________________________________________________________________________________________In this episode we cover: • The difference between me in crisis and me when I'm chill • Why chaos makes everything feel bigger, heavier, and more dramatic • Laura's “my life is a country music song” season • Claire's own home-renovation nightmare • What actually defines chaos (spoiler: it's rarely the big thing) • Why you get snappy, defensive, avoidant, or shut down when you're overwhelmed • How fast life can change — and how to stay grounded when it does • What to expect as the holidays approach and emotional load increases • Small, practical ways to return to yourself in the middle of a storm

In Episode #35 of NAPFA Nation, host Marie Swift speaks with renowned industry commentator Bob Veres to discuss his newest book, A Behind-the-Scenes History of the Financial Planning Profession, a sweeping history of the profession through Veres' 45-year career. Veres explores pivotal moments that have shaped the profession, from the collapse of limited partnerships in the 1990s and the tech wreck to the Great Recession and the COVID-19 pandemic. He unpacks how each crisis forced the profession to reflect, adapt, and re-center on genuine financial planning as the foundation for client trust and long-term success. He delves into the ongoing regulatory challenges and the outsized influence of brokerage lobbies, highlighting the uphill battle that fee-only advisors faced, and continue to face, in raising standards and earning the public's confidence. Veres also reflects on what drives some practitioners to continually raise the bar for professionalism and education, leading the evolution of standards not just to comply with regulations, but to inspire greater consumer trust. He shares enduring lessons and keys to long-term success for advisors, emphasizing the importance of curiosity, adaptability, and staying engaged with new ideas, qualities that have defined the true leaders of the profession. In a nutshell: The profession has faced repeated crises that have repeatedly tested advisor-client relationships, causing shifts back toward authentic financial planning over pure asset management. Regulatory dynamics have been challenging, with the SEC's increasing oversight, starting in 2004, disproportionately burdening fee-only fiduciary advisors, who have been influenced by lobbying from brokerage firms. This regulatory capture shaped the profession's standards and challenges. Despite early financial sacrifices, fee-only pioneers raised standards in education, practice, and ethics, gaining consumer trust and eventually building large, successful firms. Voluntary higher standards have been a key driver toward professionalism. The essential qualities for future success in the profession include flexibility, curiosity, continuous learning, and early adoption of innovations such as AI. These are the traits that distinguish enduring leaders from laggards as the profession continues to evolve and adapt. Special Note: In 2023, we rebranded the NAPFA podcast with a new album cover and series title: NAPFA Nation. We are shifting our monthly episodes to bring you inspiring conversations and key insights from leaders in the Fee-Only financial planning profession. Marie Swift, Founder and CEO of Impact Communications, will continue on as host, interviewing a variety of NAPFA members and professionals. You will still be able to find on this channel the 32 Mindset Mastery episodes with respected fiduciary financial planners and allied advocates who are committed to accomplishing great things as they master their own mindset and continue to serve their clients in the best ways possible. On a crisp November day, "The Valley Today" welcomes listeners with its signature blend of warmth and wit. Host Janet Michael and Captain Warren Gosnell of the Frederick County Sheriff's Office kick off their monthly Public Safety Thursday segment with playful banter about radio nostalgia, technical hiccups, and the quirks of live broadcasting. Their camaraderie sets a relaxed tone, inviting the audience into a conversation that would soon delve into the heart of community service. Navigating Change and Tradition As the discussion unfolds, Janet and Captain Gosnell reminisce about the evolution of radio technology and the enduring challenges of adapting to new tools. Their exchange highlights not only the humor in everyday mishaps but also the resilience required in both broadcasting and public safety. Captain Gosnell's anecdotes about his new vehicle and the familiar roads of the Shenandoah Valley paint a vivid picture of local life, complete with autumn leaves and the ever-present specter of roadwork. The Valor Awards: Recognizing Bravery Transitioning to the evening's main event, Janet introduces the upcoming Top of Virginia Regional Chamber's Valor Awards, a ceremony dedicated to honoring first responders and citizens who have gone above and beyond in moments of crisis. Captain Gosnell emphasizes the significance of such recognition, sharing personal stories of lifesaving interventions and the humility that comes with being acknowledged for simply "doing the job." He reflects on the emotional impact of these awards—not just for law enforcement, but for EMTs, firefighters, and ordinary citizens whose quick thinking has saved lives. The Pendulum of Public Perception Throughout the conversation, Captain Gosnell addresses the shifting public perception of first responders. He notes that while moments of extraordinary heroism—such as those witnessed during 9/11—can elevate the status of public safety professionals, negative incidents can just as quickly cast a shadow over the entire field. This pendulum effect, he explains, underscores the importance of community support and positive reinforcement, both for morale and for the continued dedication of those in uniform. Celebrating Citizen Heroes Importantly, the Valor Awards do not solely spotlight professionals. Janet and Captain Gosnell discuss the vital role of private citizens—children who call 911 in emergencies, bystanders who administer CPR, and neighbors who step in during crises. These stories, often overlooked by the media, demonstrate the profound impact that ordinary people can have when they choose to act. Captain Gosnell encourages listeners to learn basic lifesaving skills, such as CPR and Narcan administration, reminding everyone that heroism is not limited to those with badges. The Ripple Effect of Good Deeds As the conversation draws to a close, the pair turns to the broader effects of intervention. Saving a life, Janet observes, can have far-reaching consequences, touching families and communities in ways that may never be fully known. Captain Gosnell echoes this sentiment, sharing how even unsuccessful rescue attempts are deeply appreciated by those affected. The message is clear: every act of courage, no matter how small, contributes to the fabric of a safer, more compassionate community. Looking Ahead With gratitude and anticipation, Janet and Captain Gosnell conclude the show by congratulating the evening's Valor Award recipients. Their conversation serves as a powerful reminder that heroism is all around us—sometimes in uniform, sometimes in everyday clothes, but always in the willingness to help.

Scott Kaier makes his second appearance on the show today. You can his first vist way back on episode 232 in August 2020. As President of Formidable Media, Scott helps a select group of clients build their brands globally through tailored marketing services—public relations, custom content, paid media, and social support. As Senior VP at Green Threads DPP, Scott also leads efforts around the EU's upcoming Digital Product Passport (DPP) legislation, guiding companies through compliance and integration. His specialties include textiles, sustainable materials, performance fabrics, and the outdoor industry. Show Notes You ever have that moment where you realize you've been playing the game backwards? That was me, mid-career, sitting in a glossy outdoor brand office with beautiful gear… that nobody wanted to write about. What Happened: I didn't come from some Madison Avenue ad agency. I started in bike shops — greasy hands, mismatched gear, and an obsession with adventure. I wasn't chasing media hits, I just wanted to be around people who got it. Fast forward a few years, I'm deep into PR for top-tier outdoor brands, working with media, crafting stories, and yet… I'd see some products completely flop in the press while others (less exciting, in my opinion) stole the spotlight. At first, I took it personally. Like, why aren't they seeing the story here? But here's what I learned: the best stories aren't the ones brands tell about themselves — they're the ones that resonate. Principle: Outdoor brands often fall in love with their products, not their audience. They get caught up in their idea of what's newsworthy, forgetting that real stories aren't about features — they're about connection. And connection comes from authenticity, timing, and meeting people where they are. Transition: Most outdoor brands are struggling not because they don't have great gear, but because they're telling stories no one is listening to. The market has changed. What worked in the golden age of trade shows and glossy magazine spreads doesn't fly in today's fragmented media world. And while your product might be sustainable, your message might not be. That's why this week's podcast episode is such a wake-up call for brand leaders trying to stay relevant. Scott Kaier dives deep into what the outdoor industry gets wrong (and right) about media, storytelling, and brand strategy — and what's coming next with EU digital product passports and sustainability compliance. Call to Action: Still wondering why your product isn't getting the attention it deserves? That's the pain. Getting ghosted by media, confused by content trends, feeling like your message gets lost? That's the agitation. Scott's been on both sides — agency and in-house — and he shares the mindset shift that changes everything. That's the solution.
We often talk about the weight of failure—but not the weight of praise. Sometimes, the very things we're celebrated for become the ghosts that follow us. We get known for what we once did well, and slowly, excellence becomes a performance rather than a joy.In this episode, I explore three emotional seasons every high-achiever eventually faces:Haunted by Achievement: When past success becomes a cage. The Quiet Rebellion of Enough: When saying no becomes an act of integrity. The Season of Letting Go: When release becomes the most honest form of growth.“Enough isn't mediocrity. It's a moral stance.” “Letting go isn't quitting. It's the beginning of honesty.”For those of us working inside systems that worship more, these aren't just reflections—they're survival skills.CLICK HERE for the Reflection Guide to help you pause, process, and shift.https://theacclivity.com/SeasonOfLettingGo_ReflectionGuidePrompt for reflection:What version of yourself are you still performing for? Warning: this episode may contain MIND-BLOWING moments. Stephen Gross is a practising psychoanalyst and a personal hero of mine. He has worked with patients for more than 45 years and his first book, The Examined Life, drew on these experiences. When it was published in 2013, it caused a sensation and went straight to number one in the Sunday Times bestseller list. Since then, hundreds of thousands of readers, including me, have taken it to our hearts. Now 12 years on from his debut, Grosz is back with Love's Labor, which asks fundamental questions around how to love and be loved in return, drawing on his almost half a century of clinical expertise. In this episode we discuss why real love causes suffering, why failed marriages are often the best kind, the difference between surrender and submission in relationships, why loss has to be part of being human and how we can be happy. In this episode of Uncover the Human, Cristina and Alex dive into the messy, often overwhelming experience of navigating change. From workplace restructuring to global uncertainty, and even the rise of AI, they explore what it means to not just “thrive” in change but simply survive it. Along the way, they challenge the overused and weaponized idea of resilience, reframing it as something more human and grounded: acknowledging your true capacity, accepting that it's limited, and focusing on what restores energy instead of forcing yourself to give more than you can. With humor, honesty, and a bit of dark levity (think black holes, stampeding elephants, and wine), the hosts share strategies for staying afloat in chaos. They discuss tools like identifying non-negotiables, building a “dopa menu” of activities that replenish you, and leaning on empathy—both for yourself and others—as a way to quiet shame and self-judgment. The conversation offers a refreshing reminder that surviving change isn't about superhuman toughness but about self-awareness, compassion, and choosing how you want to show up in the small moments that add up to your life.
The Bright Spot in the Waiting Room: Host Julie Ferman shares a powerful story of a client who decided to be the "bright spot" in a difficult setting, choosing to connect with people instead of staring ahead or reading a book. By simply starting a conversation with a stranger, they arranged to keep going at the same time, ensuring neither of them would be so alone. It's a powerful reminder that connection is possible, even in the hardest places.
