The word "bureaucracy" conjures up images of red tape and long lines at the DMV, not cutting-edge innovation. But some of the most significant scientific and health innovations of the past century have actually come from scientist-bureaucrats at government research institutes.  On this episode, host Jason Lloyd is joined by Natalie Aviles, an assistant professor at the University of Virginia and author of An Ungovernable Foe: Science and Policy Innovation in the US National Cancer Institute. Aviles explains what the National Cancer Institute does and how the mission and culture of the agency have enabled its scientist-bureaucrats to conduct pioneering cancer research, such as the invention of the human papillomavirus, or HPV, vaccine.  Resources: Check out Natalie Aviles's book, An Ungovernable Foe: Science and Policy Innovation in the U.S. National Cancer Institute, to learn more about the NCI.  Read “How Federal Science Agencies Innovate in the Public Interest” at Issues.org to learn more about the development of the HPV vaccine and the importance of agency discretion.

In response to these storms, Governor Mills proposed and authorized the largest recovery support package in Maine history -- $60 million for working waterfronts, business recovery, and public infrastructure projects -- and launched an expert Infrastructure Rebuilding and Recovery Commission to help develop Maine's first long-term plan for safeguarding Maine communities and people from climate effects like extreme storms, flooding, and storm surge. Critics of the U.S. Supreme Court's recent decision clarifying presidential immunity are making outrageous claims, such as that a president can go much further than merely jailing critics of climate policy, as RFK Jr. famously suggested; now, hysterical partisans claim that the court just authorized POTUS to vaporize political enemies with the Navy Seals - at will. Brett Tolman, former U.S. Attorney, joins Jacki to debunk this brazenly false assertion. Tolman explains that Presidential Immunity is a long-established legal doctrine that has served us well for years - regardless of what non-lawyer commentators and even some court jesters have claimed. Tolman comments on the opinion of former S.D.N.Y. federal prosecutor Andy McCarthy that the U.S. Supreme Court decision on presidential immunity could end 80% of the political lawfare. - - - - - Dr. Merrill “Buddy” Matthews of the Institute for Policy Innovation joins Jacki to share the news that the U.S. has set yet another record in oil & gas production, once again disproving the “green” doomsayers who tried to discourage investment, claiming these would be “stranded assets” by now, having become obsolete in the “green” energy transition… that never was.   X: @JackiDailyHost TruthSocial: JackiDaily Rumble: TheJackiDailyShow YouTube: TheJackiDailyShow Instagram: JackiDaily Facebook: The Jacki Daily Show

More than one third of the world's 2,000 largest publicly traded companies have made some kind of net-zero commitment, and the list is growing quickly. A critical part of those corporate plans will be securing cleanly sourced electricity for their energy needs, but that requires that there is enough fossil-free electricity available on the grid for every company that prefers to use it. In 2021, renewable energy and nuclear power, combined, accounted for only about 37% of global electricity production. How can a company ensure that their electricity comes from among those fossil-free sources? And how can companies encourage the growth of clean electrical capacity, so that it will meet the growing demand of consumers? These kinds of questions are exactly what Doug Miller, Deputy Director of Market & Policy Innovation at the Clean Energy Buyers Institute (CEBI), aims to answer. CEBI is a non-profit organization that collaborates with policy makers, leading philanthropies, and energy market stakeholders to identify and expedite the implementation of clean energy market solutions. They have also worked closely with the World Resources Institute (WRI), who designed the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, the most commonly used standards for companies to assess their carbon emissions impact. Doug joined Climate Now to explain what those standards are, why they are evolving, and some of the innovative tools that CEBI has identified that could be incorporated into the GHG Protocol to help both national electricity grids and the companies that use them achieve their decarbonization goals faster.Follow us on Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, and Instagram.Contact us at contact@climatenow.comVisit our website for all of our content and sources for each episode.

Swimming upstream, or against the current, is typically not beneficial unless you are salmon. Yet, we often do so when it comes to public policy, and this is quite evident in energy policy. We have reliable, clean, affordable, and safe energy resources and technology, yet we insist on promoting, subsidizing, and mandating technologies that are less reliable and efficient. How can we stabilize our energy grid while using all relevant technologies to maximize benefits for consumers, businesses, and our nation? Wayne B. Stoltenberg, Linda's guest, has decades of experience in the energy industry and is Chairman of the Institute for Policy Innovation. His common-sense policy recommendations provide win-win solutions for creating a secure and prosperous future. ©Copyright 2023, Prosperity 101, LLC -------------------------------- For information and resources visit: https://prosperity101.com To  order a copy of Prosperity 101 – Job Security Through Business Prosperity by Linda J.
