This is a Grave Talks CLASSIC EPISODE! In 1922, following the discovery of King Tut's Tomb, Egyptian-themed theaters became quite popular. The Egyptian Theater in DeKalb, Illinois, was one of more than 100 similarly-themed theaters built in the US. Construction began in the spring of 1929, and a few months later, in December, the Egyptian Theatre opened its doors - just a couple of months after the stock market crashed and the Great Depression began. The renovations and resurgence of the theater have apparently awakened some old ghosts within its walls. Spirits from the vaudeville era and some from present times are reported to mingle with the living, haunting performances and after-shows at the theater. According to legend, six unique spirits are residing at the Egyptian Theatre. From the lady in green to Irv, one of the theater's biggest supporters, and even a mysterious young girl – they all make their presence known. Noted author and teacher Andrew Erish's first book, Col. William N. Selig, the Man Who Invented Hollywood, was hailed by the L.A. Public Library as “One of the best books of 2012.” And The Huffington Post declared, “…it may well be the film book of the year.” Andrew's most recent book, Vitagraph, America's First Great Motion Picture Studio, received the Peter C. Rollins Award for the best book of 2022 by the Southwest Popular/American Culture Association. I've read both of Andrew's fascinating and entertaining books, and can tell you that, despite my having been a student of films and Hollywood for more years than I care to admit, I learned a great deal about the beginnings of the movies that I had no clue about. If you like knowing all about Hollywood, I highly recommend both books to you. Andrew also contributed five essays to American Cool, published in conjunction with an exhibit at the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery. And he's written for various publications, including the Los Angeles Times and Quarterly Review of Film and Video.Andrew has lectured at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the L.A. Central Library, Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood, Santa Fe Film Festival, and the Shubert Archive in New York. In the United Kingdom, he's lectured at the Oxford Literary Festival and London's Cinema Museum. He's also programmed films and was honored at the Pordenone Silent Film Festival in Italy. For several years he has taught film history at universities and colleges in the Los Angeles area.

Welcome listeners of All Things Local to our third season of the podcast and the first episode of 2023. I have some wonderful episodes planned for this year including this one. Brandon Pugh is a former student of mine and since he graduated, he has built his career in volunteer administration at the Egyptian Theatre in DeKalb. As is so common with our guests, this isn't a career track he had anticipated but came to find through internships. While you might be familiar with this amazing landmark, Brandon will share just how important volunteers are to this organization. If you're thinking about your new year's resolutions and opportunities to give back to your community, consider volunteering at the Egyptian or a number of organizations that could really use your time and talent. Learn a new skill, meet new people, and make communities better in the process. There are so many benefits to volunteering! Happy 2023 everyone and enjoy our conversation!
