A final transmission before I take an indefinite break. Please visit breakerwhiskey.com for more information. Breaker Whiskey is an Atypical Artists production created by Lauren Shippen. If you'd like to support the show, please visit atypicalartists.co/support.----[Transcript]Breaker, breaker. This is Whiskey calling out for Passerine. Got another message here so I'll, uh, read it out. "Breaker breaker it's Passerine here. I sent a message out to you a little while ago, and honestly, I don't remember half of what I said. I was in a bit of a weird place then, so it might have been nonsense. If you come across it, I hope it isn't too incomprehensible. Hope I had somewhat of a point. Just wanted to message again. Kinda miss hearing your voice on the radio, but hey, you do what you want. It's your life, and I bet you're making the most of it, now you know what it's worth.I was just thinking about home. About what it means to be home. If you recall, I set off on a big adventure, a lot like yours, I think. Just getting out to see what it was like out there. To see things, I'd never seen. I have this motto about making sure I do the things I want in this life. No regrets, right? And I'm home now. After a year of being away, I made it home. Not back to my original timeline, I don't think. Things are still wonky, and it's definitely not the way it's supposed to be, but I'm not fading away anymore. I'm stable. And I feel like I've found a place to belong. Just like you did. You found Harry, and that's your home. And I know it's not the same, but nothing ever is. Look at me rambling again. I'm trying my best to get better at being succinct, but hey, work in progress. My point is that home is important. And that maybe you'll never get to go back to your timeline, but maybe that's not a bad thing. Maybe you can find a new one, like I did. One where you and Harry can be together.Still on the search for Charleston Chews by the way. Don't think we have those in my neck of the woods. Still gonna keep looking. It sticks in my head every time I enter a shop with a chocolate section. Hoping you're safe at home.Passerine out."I did get your previous message. I don't know if you heard my response. It sounds like maybe the radio waves are not our friends all the time. I know I haven't been on here as much as I was in that year of wandering that I did, but I still think about all of you out there hearing my voice and either finding comfort in that or wondering who the hell is talking on the radio. But I'm happy to hear that you're home, if I can remember correctly, which, you know, I'm not sure I can, you last talked about change and swinging between hopefulness and hopelessness, so sounds like maybe you are at home with hope now? And you're right. Harry is my home. We've- we settled into a good place, Harry and I. It's not always perfect, but I don't know. It's like all of the hard edges of ourselves that used to chafe on each other have been sanded down by proximity and, well, an effort, I guess, because it can't just be proximity, right? Because we were together in a house alone for years and still, you know, bumped into those sharp points. So the effort is important and it makes the time go by fast too. Really, you know, working on not just coexisting with somebody, but building a relationship with them, building a home with them. Not to say that we're building a permanent home. We're still moving from time to time, but mostly because Harry's actually really wanted to see things. see things that she's never seen before. Like you wanted to. And so we've wandered. And some of the things have been things that I saw and fell in love with on my grand road trip. And some have been new to me too. And that's been really nice. Both sharing the things that excite me with her and discovering new things together. But yeah, it's amazing how the time slips away, you know? I look up and already it's been two years that we've been doing this, that we've been what we are to each other. It doesn't feel real. I look in the mirror and I don't feel like I'm that much older. I'm not even sure I feel wiser. And isn't that supposed to be the hallmark of age? And I guess I've been distracted in exploring all the nooks and crannies of this country, and also all of the dimensions of Harry. I guess I haven't been leaning on the radio as much as I have in the past. I still like having a connection to the outside world, such as it is, especially since it doesn't seem like...well, what you have said about change and about home. I have started to wonder if we have found ourselves in a new timeline after all, in some kind of new home. Because we haven't heard from Junior in a really long time. I mean, we haven't heard from Birdie either, but they said something had changed, and I wonder...I do wonder if we're safe now. If we're safe and we can just be home. And if that's the case, then maybe we can create a new home base. Really actually build a home together. I've never been one for scripture. Surprise, I know, but there's this one phrase that stuck with me through the years, and that's "everyone will sit under their own vine and under their own fig tree, and none will make them afraid". I think that's the promise of home, isn't it? Being in your own space with your own people. Unafraid. And against all odds, I think we may have found that. What a miracle that is. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I do enjoy this tether to the wider universe. But the habit I have of making sure that I'm consistently sitting down and listening to the radio on some kind of cadence and responding to the people who are able to get through. I think part of that has been driven out of fear. Listening at the radio for a warning. For some kind of information that would send my life off its axis again. And I don't want to be afraid anymore. That's not to say that I still won't sit by the radio and listen for you, Passerine, or for anyone else who's sent me a message through the years. But. But maybe I don't know when you'll next hear from me. Maybe...maybe I'm gonna go sit under my own vine and fig tree for a little while. Oh, what a miracle that is. So Passerine, I am glad you're home, too. And to anybody else who might be hearing this, wherever you are, whoever you are. If you're not home yet, I hope you find it soon.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

I think I remember correctly that you found your dog, and your dog had also picked up some other dogs in the process of being missing. So it sounds like all of you are doing well. I have talked to Harry before about finding some kind of pet, but I don't know. We have yet to happen upon any creature that would seem to have their life improved by joining up with us. Lots of wild animals, not a lot of domesticated left. I am sorry that people keep trying to take them from you. Sounds like it's sort of dodgy where you are. Weird that some woman claimed that she knew me and could take you to me. I guess maybe she's heard me on the radio too. Maybe she's heard me talking to you on the radio. But in any case, no, I don't know anybody. I mean, well, I guess I know you, I know Passerine. I know the Red family, solitude. Lots of people who have sent me radio messages, Morse code messages through the years, but I haven't met any of you in person. So any one of you is as trustworthy as any of the others. I guess that's not really that helpful. In any case, I hope you're well too, as well as you can be, and that you are able to track down your Birdie, whoever he is, wherever he is. I like the idea of having a secret language with a friend.I guess Harry and I sort of have that, a holdover from some of the signs and whistles that we would use in our work. But it's not like it comes much in handy now. We don't really need to speak in secret code when there's no one around to hear us. In any case, I'm glad you got your radio fixed and keep your head on a swivel. Sounds like there are some not great people where you are, but also sounds like you've got some good friends in those dogs. You said you wanted to hear from me again, and well, I like writing out to you. I like hearing my words read out and answered, just another reminder that I'm real and that other people find worth in my words. You feel like a friend, even though we've never met, and likely never will. Thank you.I'll be completely honest with you Whiskey, I've rewritten this message so many times. I keep trying so hard to say something profound or meaningful, something from the heart. The issue is that my heart keeps changing, I go from hopeful to hopeless, and words I believed in one day seem like lies the next. It's obvious to say, but that sort of change is certain. The world around you changes, and you change with it, sometimes slowly, sometimes all at once. You know something about that, about breaching into the unknown, choosing that change, and realising that really, you have very little control of what comes next. But, in a way, that's the best part. Because if things keep changing, if things are chaotic and unpredictable, then at least it means you're still there to experience it. And if you're still there, then it means things can change for the better still. It means the candle is still lit.Again, I think you get that. The refusal to let the chaos and darkness and uncertainty win, because you have a goal, you have a fire, and you need to keep fighting.By the way, I've never had a Charleston Chew, but now on my adventures, I've been keeping an eye out for them. Haven't found one yet, but I'll keep looking, and when I find one, you'll get my honest review. Also, about the tree thing, everyone does really dumb and idiotic things at seventeen. It's the magic of being seventeen. If anyone out there listening is currently that age, keep going kid, it'll get better.I'll give you a few more fun facts about me and my life. I cut my hair short last year and I finally felt like myself when I looked in the mirror. Sometimes I think I'm in the wrong universe too, because I always seem to be the odd one out, no matter where I go. I find cleaning dishes to be soothing. My favourite bird is the raven.I hope you get this message. I hope you understand what I'm trying to say. I hope your life keeps changing, and that the fire doesn't go out. We're not alone. In this episode, Wil sits down with Maneesh Goyal and Alvina Patel Buxani, the co-founders of Passerine, a neighborhood-focused Indian restaurant in New York City. What emerges is a conversation about risk as a path to fulfillment, the power of storytelling in hospitality, and the intentional way they've built a brand that's as much about people and community as it is about food.Passerine is more than a restaurant, it's the product of decades of experience in marketing, luxury branding, and entrepreneurship, paired with a deep appreciation for New York City. Maneesh and Alvina share how their 20-year friendship evolved into a business partnership, how they raised funds from friends and family who believed in their mission, and why their Indian restaurant is designed to keep guests in New York, not transport them elsewhere. They also highlight the indispensable role of their chef, Chetan Shetty, and their commitment to building a strong, culture-driven team.As Maneesh puts it, “Risk makes life remarkable.” This episode is full of lessons for anyone in hospitality, or anyone who wants to create meaningful, guest-centered experiences.12 Key Takeaways Risk Makes Life Remarkable – Maneesh's guiding principle: true fulfillment comes from taking calculated risks, whether starting a marketing agency, coming out in a traditional community, or opening a restaurant. A Partnership Built on Friendship – Maneesh and Alvina's two-decade friendship became the foundation for a business partnership built on complementary skills and mutual respect. Lessons from Early Ventures – Maneesh's first restaurant taught him the importance of aligning with customer needs and defining a clear brand DNA. lessons he carried into Passerine. Smart, Passionate Investors – They raised funds from friends and family who weren't just financially invested but also emotionally connected to the restaurant's success. Hospitality as Storytelling – Drawing on Alvina's luxury branding experience, Pasarine weaves storytelling into everything, from its poetic name (derived from a species of birds) to a cocktail menu inspired by the fable of the king and the songbird. An Indian Restaurant with New York Spirit – Instead of transporting guests to India, Pasarine serves Indian flavors with a New York sensibility, lighter dishes, approachable flavors, and a team that reflects the city's diversity. Design with Intention – Every detail, from soft seating at every table to the music selection, was thoughtfully designed to create a warm, comfortable, and inviting atmosphere. Chef as Cornerstone – Chef Chetan Shetty's creativity, hands-on problem-solving, and passion for his craft make him central to the restaurant's identity and success. Culture Drives Teams – Maeeish emphasizes that strong leadership visibility, consistent communication, and a clear sense of purpose are essential to inspire hospitality teams. Hospitality Lessons Travel – Concepts from books like Setting the Table and Unreasonable Hospitality aren't just for restaurants,  they can transform experiences in industries like healthcare, retail, and beyond. PR Gets Guests In, Experience Brings Them Back – While good PR can fill seats, it's the lived experience, the people, the service, the atmosphere, that turns one-time diners into loyal patrons.

Um, I'm really, really sorry about your loss. Well, I guess you and I have a mutual understanding club going on because I- I get you too. And, uh, thank you for the facts about yourself. I like the way that you described blue. I think I know exactly what color you mean and yeah, that's a good one. And I hope whatever unknown you were heading into is ultimately really, really good. No matter how different it is. And in the spirit of a trade for a trade, um, let's see, something you might not know about me already. I love Charleston Chews. I think they're the best candy. They're simple. They're perfect. They're so big, you know? You're not getting a candy bar that's...you're gonna eat in three bites. I haven't had a Charleston Chew in a while, but I love them. I love the smell of dirt. Like, The soil that you can smell on a farm, that kind of, like, slightly metallic, slightly manure-y smell? Reminds me of driving with the windows down as a kid. And I once got concussed falling out of a tree. And you might think, oh, well, you know, kids climb up trees all the time and get injured. But, um, I was seventeen So, a little bit more embarrassing. This is Passerine calling back to Whiskey. You got the name right. I caught your response a little late, honestly just pure luck that I went to check my radio. I couldn't believe it when I heard you reading out my message. Felt a bit like a dream. As someone who's lost people, I know how much apologies mean little. So, I'll just say I get it. For me, I recently lost a family member, and we were going through their clothes, trying to figure out what to keep and what to give away. It's amazing how much of someone you can find in their clothes, the colours they picked out, the brands they stick to. My person, she loved colour and animals. She volunteered with a whole bunch of different organisations and kept the polo shirts from each one. It was wonderful. And it hurt like hell, because I'd see a jacket I remembered her wearing, and I realised she'd never wear it again. She'd never add another patch to her jacket covered in all the places she'd went. And thinking about losing her just makes me think of all the people you stand to lose in life. Made me terrified about all the clothes and possessions I was going to have to go through in my life, all the memories I was going to have to fold and put into a box, like it was that easy,To cut my ramble short, I understand you. And you are always welcome to respond in this way. The darkness is never as warm as you think it will be.You mentioned not knowing things about me, and well, like you, I'm a little cautious about letting big details slip. But, I'm happy to make a little trade, to keep things fair.My favourite colour is blue, specifically the way the ocean looks from a cliff on the beach on a sunny day. I once nearly concussed myself when ice-skating. In just two weeks, I'm upending my whole life and heading off into the unknown. Not a bad unknown, but just a different one. Maybe I'll be able to give you an update on that later. I love the sound of rain, and the waves, the scratch of a pencil when you're writing a story. I'm a writer, which is my only excuse for how long this message will probably be. My hair is short, and no one can agree on whether it's dark blonde or brown. That's all I can think of for now. Thank you for your promise, I'm holding you to it. And I'll keep up my end over here. No more sinking into dark corners for me.By the way, a passerine is actually a category of birds, passerines make up over half of all bird species. Big bird fan over here, but I also picked it as my name because it's the title of a song that wasn't yet released in your timeline. This has been Passerine, out for now."See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

This is whiskey calling out for Passerine. I think-I hope I'm pronouncing that correctly. I read your message out the other day. I don't know if you heard it. I recorded it and then set it to repeat, so hopefully you caught it. I just figured I didn't want to respond to your message and have you not hear it. So I hoped that in reading your message out loud, you would know that I was going to respond and stay tuned in. I don't know. I don't know how any of this works. So anyway, hopefully you are listening and hopefully I said that name correctly, Passerine. I don't know that I'm familiar with that particular type of bird, but I like a theme. You're definitely right in that I have had a year. Sometimes if I think about it too much, it doesn't seem real. It doesn't seem like all of those things happened in a 12 month period, especially when compared to the previous six years. I didn't know life could be that full. Maybe full is the wrong word because obviously I was alone for pretty much all of it. But eventful. And different, right? Just different. That's what I wanted and that's what I got and.. I wanted to not feel so alone and...to your point- talking to you helped me with that feeling. So did Donnie of course. I think about him every single day. It was easier- it was easier to miss him. To miss Richie and Pete and Sylvie and Francis and Martha and everyone else...it was easy to miss them when I thought there was nothing I could do, when I thought that the whole world had just gone mad and any help I could have provided, was way too late. So it hurts worse now. The fact that he's gone. Because I was in a position to help him, to protect him. And I...I failed. [static] And you're right, Passerine. Some days I do want to run away?. And wrap myself in that darkness. And today is one of those days I... Harry said something, made some joke and...I don't know. It just set me off, you know? It was like for a second I could hear the echo of what Don would have said had he been there, because even though it wasn't perfect between all of us, we did, you know, we had a rhythm and and Harry would say something and then Richie would say something, and Don would come in with the punch line, or Harry and Richie would be arguing and Don would mediate and-- or lean over to me and make a joke, just the two of us. And this was one of those moments where there should have been another beat, right? I said something. Harry said something, and then... And he wasn't there. He just - he just wasn't there. I still heard his voice. Still imagined what he would have said. It's not like that's the first time that's happened, right, in the last seven years. Like, Harry and I have had plenty of times where we feel the specter of the people that we lost around us. But it's worse now. [static] Sorry, I didn't mean to make a response to your message about this. I just, I wanted to follow your advice. You know, in feeling that feeling of wanting to run into the darkness, turning here instead to talk to you. I wanted to. I wanted to do that. [static] And I'm glad I could be a reminder for you. I don't know why you feel lonely or if you are literally alone. You didn't tell me much about you, but I'm glad if I eased some of that feeling a little bit. It's weird to think about. It's strange to think about being a part of people's lives when I don't know those people, you know? I mean, that's part of life no matter what, right? he person behind you in line gives you that last quarter that you need to buy coffee and they make your day okay. And you think about them and remember their face and they don't really think about you, right? They did a nice thing and it didn't really cost them much, but it made an impact on you. Things like that happen all the time, happen every day in a place like New York City, where most of the people you're interacting with on any given day are complete strangers that you'll probably never see again. So it's not like I haven't always been a supporting character in people's stories and vice versa. But well, you know, there's the whole being a part of people's lives when those people's lives are occurring in different timelines thing which is still hard to wrap my mind around, but I can't think about too long or my head because I'll wobbly. But, even beyond that, I don't- I don't know what your face looks like. I don't even know your real name. And granted, you don't know my real name, not my full name. But you know my voice. You know things about my life, about my mind, about my heart. And the most wild thing is that all of that means something to you. It means something to you that I have feelings and that I've shared what's happened to me and that I continue to share what's happening to me now and that... Sometimes I think, why does anyone care? But then I think, gosh, I mean, if I had someone to listen to on the radio who knew things that I didn't and had lived life that I hadn't lived, I'd wanna listen to them too, just for some entertainment. At this point, I'm pretty sure I know everything about Harry that I ever will know. Well, that's not true. But, you know, seven years of someone...You kinda hear all their stories at least once. Anyway. I feel like I'm repeating my stories and my thoughts. But, it still just blows me away. That people care. That people think I'm brave. You're right. The true loneliness is being unknown. And I hope you do break out of that. I really do, because. It is such a cage, isn't it? To feel like no one knows you. And sometimes I wonder with Harry if I'm opening that door and walking into that cage myself over and over again. Because she knows me. Of course she knows me. But even now, even now that she knows the truth of my feelings, sometimes I get afraid of her seeing me. Of her knowing me in my heart of hearts. And I want to hide. I want to run away and...who does that serve? So this is my promise to you, Passerine. I will keep calling out. I will not run into the darkness. And I will try to let myself be known. I hope the same for you. Whiskey out.

Figured I'd keep with the bird theme that's going on around here. I've been seeing these messages coming through for a while now, but only recently did I take the time to actually sit down and hear. And, wow. What a year you have had. From visiting all of these beautiful places, to the danger of being chased, and all the heartache that Harry has brought you, I'm so glad you chose to call out to us. Some days I wish I had the bravery to do that, to call out to the world and let them know what the inside of my heart looks like. Or, well, to just go up to the people around me and just let them see the outside. I feel like even in a timeline where I'm surrounded with people, the loneliness still gets to me. I don't think you understand just how brave you are, to fight through that loneliness, to tell the world, and Harry, what it is that you feel. I think sometimes true loneliness is being unknown. I don't know how to break out of that. I'm so glad that you aren't alone anymore, even though I know some days you'll probably feel it again. Some days you're going to want to run away into the wilderness, and wrap yourself in the comfort of darkness, and just stay where no one can see or hear you. But I think this past year has shown that you're strong enough to fight that urge. And hey, if you're ever feeling that way, like that loneliness is creeping up on you, you know what to do. Turn on that radio, and tell us everything. We'll be here for you. You're never alone. And I think that's what I'm most grateful for. You've reminded me again that I don't have to be alone. Thanks Whiskey. This has been Passerine, over and out.

No evidence for cross-contextual consistency in spatial learning and behavioural flexibility in a passerine

Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2020.09.04.282566v1?rss=1 Authors: Troisi, C. A., Cooke, A. C., Davidson, G. L., de la Hera, I., Reichert, M. S., Quinn, J. L. Abstract: Although the evolution of cognitive differences among species has long been of interest in ecology, whether natural selection acts on cognitive processes within populations has only begun to receive similar attention. One of the key challenges is to understand how consistently cognitive traits within any one domain are expressed over time and across different contexts, as this has direct implications for the way in which selection might act on this variation. Animal studies typically measure a cognitive domain using only one task in one context, and assume that this captures the likely expression of that domain in different contexts. This deficit is not surprising because, from an ecologist's perspective, cognitive tasks are notoriously laborious to employ, and for design reasons most tasks can only be deployed in a specific context. Thus our knowledge of whether individual differences in cognitive abilities are consistent across contexts is limited. Using a wild population of great tits (Parus major) we characterised consistency of two cognitive abilities, each in two different contexts: 1) spatial learning at two different spatial scales, and 2) behavioural flexibility as both performance in a detour reaching task and reversal learning in a spatial task. We found no evidence of a correlation between the two spatial learning speeds, or between the two measures of behavioural flexibility. This suggests that cognitive performance is highly plastic and sensitive to differences across tasks, or that variants of these well-known tasks may tap into different combinations of both cognitive and non-cognitive mechanisms, or that they simply do not adequately measure each putative cognitive domain. Our results highlight the challenges of developing standardised cognitive assays to explain natural behaviour and to understand the selective consequences of that variation. Explaining History (explaininghistory) (explaininghistory)

In early 1943 the tide of the Second World War was turning in favour of the allies, following victories in North Africa. At Casablanca the British and the Americans met to discuss their two conflicting views of the future conduct of the war. The British approach triumphed, giving Churchill's strategy the upper hand but it was the beginning of the end of Britain's wartime influence.
