Welcome to episode 79 of The Last Standee Podcast! In our endless pursuit for aesthetical perfection, always striving for novelty, we bring you a... special? Is it the right word? Would it be better "weird"? Oh, it's yours to judge (definitely weird) episode, because that's a two-people recording, dedicated to two games, which are two-player games (not one, not three)! After all, it takes two to tango! ...And now that I wrote that, I can retire with a smile. Anyho, after the Standee Catch-up, we have Alessio talking about Sky Team, last Essen fair's sensation, then Alexis bring us a pearl from Level 99 Studio, Pixel Tactics! Stay tuned for more weirdness, er, novelty! (and I'm sure we didn't remove all the tags from the public domain tango audio track we used to mix with the base)

Find out about its history, how it developed from a "one-off" mini-game to one of our longest-running series. We discuss the challenges of this transition and some of the development thoughts that go into the game's balance.Pixel Tactics was originally a stand-alone game in our mini-game library. It has since become a long-running series with at least 5 games and more to come in the future! This led to a few "growing pains" that have colored the game's development. The first game introduced a variety of powerful effects that were hard to build-on. This is compounded by the lack of an internal balancing mechanism (like Mana in typical card games). In the end, the way Pixel Tactics developed meant that we had to get creative with how we solved problems, resulting in a game system filled to the brim with fun combos and an emphasis on card advantage and tempo. This blog supports an RSS Feed which you can add to your podcast app of choice to automatically get each episode as it releases! Since he's solo, the games only get a quick overview and gush session, but there's enough info in there to wet your whistle for what each game is about. Also, Craig is joined by his family for a run down of a slew of games they played together, both at home and at the Malted Meeple. Pixel Tactics was released by one of my favourite companies, Level 99 a while ago to great success, but not enough because Level 99 deserve a lot of success. They have consistently released good quality games of a variety of styles and genres, including Roleplaying Games, card games and iPad games. Pixel Tactics is a game for two players that plays in about 30 to 45 minutes and offers a heavy gaming experience with tons of tactics (hence the name) and super cute and well crafted characters with a retro 8bit style art direction. But does the game stand up to scrutiny? Michael and Max sat down to have a go and find out! Hope you enjoy the show!

Level 99 has been a company I’ve been very keen on since I learned about Brad Talton some three years ago. I backed their Kickstarter project for Mystic Empyrean and since they’ve had a whole load of projects that have been successful, which is pretty good! They are the minds behind BattleCon, one of the best fighting games out there. Also, of course, its expansion. Pixel Tactics also features as a fantastic game, by the way! Now they are again in Kickstarter with a game called Argent: The Consortium, a game the promises to mix Euro and Ameritrash experiences so everyone has a way to play that suits their tastes. And it sounds jolly good too, with some really cool victory conditions. But don’t let me give you any spoilers before the podcast. Enjoy the show!
