Since then, his stories have often explored how our relationship with the natural world is intertwined with our spiritual journeys—as individuals, as communities, and as a collective humanity. Lance is also an avid astronomy and space-travel nut, and he found the germ of his story “Five Days Until Sunset” at the intersection of pondering the spiritual search that never ends and wondering what life might be like on a tidally locked, “eyeball” planet. The story also asks what it means to live in harmony with a world that is ready to kill you, and what it means to have faith in the face of inconvenient truths.

The panel rolls the dice on a game of Lords of Vegas. Lords of Vegas, designed by James Ernest & Mike Selinker, was first published by Mayfair Games in 2010. Episode Summary: In this episode, we discuss Lords of Vegas, a two to four-player, light-complexity game first published by Mayfair Games in 2010. The panel focuses on the concept of calculated risk and its integral role in Lords of Vegas. We discuss the importance of taking risks and the value of recognizing when risk-taking is no longer beneficial. We then touch on the concept of viewing the casino colors as a resource, and the tactical decision-making required to be successful in Loads of Vegas. Finally, we conclude with enthusiasm for the game, which we've played multiple times in the past few months. Visit our website and join the conversation on Discord. Chapters: (0:01:00) - Exploring Lords of Vegas (0:14:54) - Managing Risk in the Casino (0:31:14) - The Risky Strategy of Risk Mitigation (0:40:32) - Taking Risks in a Seat-of-Your-Pants Game Chapter Summaries: (0:01:00) - Exploring Lords of Vegas (14 Minutes) Lords of Vegas is a two to four-player, light-complexity game first published by Mayfair Games in 2010. The game's goal is to build big casinos, take over other people's big casinos, and make lots of money. Players draw cards that allow them to purchase property and establish blocks of casinos. Whoever has the highest die in the block is the boss of the casino, and when someone has a casino along Las Vegas Boulevard, they get big cash.   (0:14:54) - Managing Risk in the Casino (16 Minutes) Lords of Vegas is an exciting and dynamic game that requires tactical decision-making. The panel focuses on the concept of calculated risk and its integral role in the game of Lords of Vegas. The participants discuss how taking risks can help you win by rebranding existing casinos or expanding them onto a space you don't own. They also discuss the importance of being able to recognize when risk-taking is no longer beneficial. Through this conversation, the panel illustrates the strategic elements that are necessary to be successful in Lords of Vegas, such as understanding the value of certain spaces, planning, and managing resources. Players must also react to the luck of the roll and seize opportunities to make a difference by taking risks. The conversation then shifts to a discussion about their recent game, where Stephen emerged as the victor and John was a close second. The panel then address their enthusiasm for Lords of Vegas; which has seen play multiple times in the past few months, and their decision to start the podcast.   (0:31:14) - The Risky Strategy of Risk Mitigation (9 Minutes) Lord of Vegas is a game of risk-taking and calculated decision-making. The participants discussed the risk mitigation strategies employed by Stephen, and how he was able to control the large gold casino. Briefly mentioned was how Stephen's "All in on Gold" strategy was inherently risky, as one lucky (or unlucky) die roll could have undone him because he wasn't as diversified as the other players. We acknowledged the lack of casino control changes in this particular play; that control of casinos did not flip-flop as much as in previous games. We also discussed the impact of the cards drawn, and how the chance factor could be directed by the players.   (0:40:32) - Taking Risks in a Seat-of-Your-Pants Game (20 Minutes) Lords of Vegas is a game that requires players to make calculated gambles to get ahead. Though it has an unpredictable element, there are still strategies that can be employed to increase the odds of success. Players can make the most of their turns by taking risks and pursuing opportunities that come up, as it is possible to be locked out of the game if they take a passive approach. In addition, the game rewards those who take a chance and can offer a thrilling experience as players can celebrate when their risky moves yield success.   Shownotes created with assistance from https://podium.page

This week we are talking to Larry ElmoreFrom Larry's about page:“I have been creating fantasy and science fiction art for over 40 years. After receiving a BFA degree from Western Kentucky, I married Betty Clemons and was drafted into the army almost at the same time. After two years in the service, I got a job at Fort Knox, Kentucky as an illustrator. In addition, I started freelancing at home and was published in a few magazines, including Heavy Metal and National Lampoon. During this time I produced my best work with my wife, our two children, Jennifer and Jeremy.Eventually, I was contacted by TSR Inc., the company that produced the role playing game Dungeons & Dragons, and I went to work there from 1981 to 1987. While at TSR, I helped set the standards of gaming art in the role-playing genre. Besides creating covers for Dungeons & Dragons, AD&D, Star Frontiers and other gaming books, I created SnarfQuest Tales for the company's Dragon Magazine. I may be best known for my work with the world of Dragonlance, exemplified by the covers of the DRAGONLANCE book series.Since 1987, I've been working as a freelance illustrator, creating covers for comics, computer games, magazines, fantasy and science fiction books and many other projects. I have worked for other publishers such as BAEN books, Bantam, Warner Books, ACE/Berkley, Doubleday, and Del Rey. I am also the co-author of Runes of Autumn and creator of the Sovereign Stone series. In the gaming and comic industries, I have freelanced for TSR, Inc, FASA, Mayfair Games, Game Designer's Workshop, White Wolf, Iron Crown Enterprises, Dragon Magazine, Amazing Magazine, Wizard Press, D. C. Comics, First Comics, Eclipse Comics and Frank Frazetta's Fantasy Illustrated. Miscellaneous credits include LJN Toys, Mattel, Lucas Films, Tonka, Monogram Models, Western Publishing, Sony Entertainment's EverQuest, and various computer game covers.”https://larryelmore.com/about/

Happy New Year! Congratulations on surviving 2020 with enough mental fortitude to listen to a podcast about board games! To celebrate the (hopefully positive) change in the calendar, we're talking about games where the board changes as you play. You'll hear us say things like: "Sometimes you just wanna go punch your friends in the face." "In 2003, Mayfair Games produced a tiny little bundle of hate."  "Yahtzee, with punching." (I'm sensing a theme here...) "Hey Culligan Man!" Other items of interest in this episode include: A classic commercial for an abstract family game about murder and cannibalism. The board that lets the Titanic slip beneath the waves (after which the survivors, apparently, will also face murder and cannibalism). Whales are jerks, Exhibit A. Château Roquefort is much easier to show than to explain in audio format, so here's a series of four pictures on how the board is constructed (thanks to BGG user @pasquy). And the folding/unfolding boards of Key to the Kingdom (folded and unfolded) and The Mushroom Eaters (folded and unfolded) As always, we appreciate your listening and would love to hear your comments on any or all of these items, and especially a review on iTunes if you have the time and inclination! Clearly the hosts secretly wanted to have a movie podcast, or perhaps just a podcast devoted to the movie Aliens. To their credit, they at least did not devolve into merely parroting quotes from the film, which is a behaviour as obnoxious and it is difficult to avoid. Rest assured they offered their poor paraphrases and hackneyed delivery while actually playing the Aliens game. It was a bad call, listener, it was...Crap. 02:37 AYURIS: Catacombs 3rd ed. Have you been wondering if you can integrate games into a formal school curriculum? Do you want to enrich a potentially dry subject area with something fun? How do find games that intrigue students and light the fire of interest? More importantly, how do you make the time?   This week, Laura and Chris pull back the curtain and show how they plan for games during the school year that enliven studies and reinforce concepts. Join us as we talk about games for Ancient Roman History.   This episode serves as a preview for several of the games that we will be covering in depth in the coming weeks. Be sure to stay tuned as we will be going further up and further in.   Recommended  Games:   Circus Maximus – This fun simulation of chariot racing, published by Avalon Hill, is now a collectible. Replacement boards and pieces, along with chariot minis, can be purchased though Camelot Games. Gladiator – Not entirely historically accurate, this Avalon Hill game is more like a Hollywood version of gladiator fighting, but it makes a great conversation starter for discussions of Roman culture. Camelot Games is, again, your best source for replacement pieces. Ancient Civilizations of the Inner Sea – This recently published board game from GMT Games looks to be a worthy successor to other broad scale strategy games like Civilization. If you’re trying to learn Mediterranean geography and the civilizations that exist in competition with Rome, especially with older students, this looks like it’s going to be a great addition. Pax Romana – Another GMT game, focusing on the various competing empires in the Mediterranean between 300 BC and 100 AD. Imperium Romanum II – This West End Games simulation of the Roman Empire is currently out-of-print, but searching the collector's market is well worth the effort.  Republic of Rome – This classic Avalon Hill game is a simulation of Roman politics during the Roman Republic. Falling Sky & Ariovistus – A Counterinsurgency simulation from GMT games, Falling Sky goes deep into the Gallic Wars. If you're reading through Julius Caesar's account in either the original or translation, this would be an excellent complement and help bring the text to life. Command & Colors Ancients – This ancient battle simulation is reasonably simple and fast playing, with many scenarios being playable within an hour once the rules are understood. The base game contains battles from the Punic Wars. Several expansions are available which cover a large number of the most important military engagements in the ancient world.  Outmatched – We love IEW for their writing curricula, but their foray into games has been just as satisfying. This quick-playing card game helps drill history facts in a highly rewarding manner. Palatinus – If you want to dig into the earliest foundations of the city, this tile and card game from Mayfair Games will help with learning the populations vying for control of the Palatine hill and the village that would rule the world. By Jove – A "monopoly" style game from Aristoplay, this now collectible game is a fun way to learn about Roman Mythology. Roman Dice Games – This set includes reproduction pigs' knuckles, as well as 6 standard wooden dice, and a collection of rules for early dice games.  Child Sized Masterpieces – This is a Montessori-style approach to art appreciation, using postcard sized art cards and a series of matching games to help build familiarity with artists and schools of art. The book includes directions for creating your own expansions, and we'll be putting together sets for Roman sculpture, mosaics, and architecture for our household.   Recommended Reading: Candyland Was Invented for Polio Wards – This article in the Atlantic covers the fascinating story behind the beloved childhood game.   Can't see the links?

We're doing time stamps now? How F.A.N.C.Y. 0:00 - We kick things off with hot takes about pomegranate juice and other awful concoctions that only fools and children would make, like blackcurrant and milk, and apple juice with orange juice. There's also a combination that only Kris's brother would make, and you'll find out about that in this section too. 2:50  Then it's off to the UK Games Expo at Birmingham's NEC for “the best convention I've been to” according to Peter, and the first part of our report from the show floor. First up it was By Fire and Sword, a teeny tiny historical wargame that looked like amazingly complicated fun. 14:20 - Then it's on to Wreck & Ruin, a post-apocalytpic vehicle combat board game that is a) pleasantly surprising, b) very accessible, and c) looking for your money on Kickstarter right now. 17:30 - There's a quick excursion by Kris to Lumino City, which pretty quickly gets wrapped up in a conversation about... 20:38 - … Pokémon Quest on Nintendo Switch, and the subject of mobile gaming in general. Does it matter which device you play a game on? Sam seems to think so, and he's probably right. 29:45 - This is where we head back to Brum for even more of the expo and “one of the darlings of the show” - the astonishingly plucky Burrows & Badgers from Oathsworn and Osprey Games. 38:30 - We're pretty disillusioned with comics at the moment, but there are a few stand outs that we've been carrying on with, and none is more important than Barrier from Brian K. Vaughan, Marcos Martin, and Muntsa Vicente. 45:41 - We round out the show with the last leg of our UK Games Expo tour and the acquisition of the pretty wild 1989 pen and paper classic Batman Role-Playing Game, from Mayfair Games. It sounds as good as you think it sounds. So pull up a chair and join Kris (@DigitalStrider), Peter (@XeroXeroXero), and Sam (@MrSamTurner) for the latest episode of our nice little hang out sessions where we talk about all the neat things we like. Just like previous purchases, the reaction from the community is varied and wide-ranging. This week, Erin and Ryan take a deep look into some of those various areas of discussion.  GUESTS: None RECENTLY PLAYED GAMES - (0:57): Pandemic Iberia by Z-Man Games (BGG Link) Smile by Z-Man Games (BGG Link) Rialto by Tasty Minstrel Games (BGG Link) FEATURED TOPIC - (20:43): Asmodee has become a common name in the board gaming world due to their continued purchases of well known board gaming companies, with the most recent being Mayfair Games and Lookout Games. This sort of move always causes a wide variety of responses, and so we decided to finally sit down and parse through what these kinds of decisions mean for the hobby, be it from the publisher, retailer, or consumer's point of view. Have you ever traveled through space minding your own business only to be attacked by space pirates?  Or how about being stopped by a merchant trying to peddle his wares, only to be a space priate in disguise?  Have you ever played Starfarers of Catan and felt like every damn card you draw is space pirates?  Yeah, us, too. This week, join us as we play through Starfarers of Catan, a Euro-style game set in the Catan-verse.  Much like Settlers of Catan, Starfarers is a game of resource collection and development, where players race to be the first to the victory points goal.  Points can be earned in a variety of ways, which allows for multiples avenues to acheive victory. Unfortunately, the game has been out of print since 1995, so unless you've got an old copy lying around, chances are this game will be hard to come by.  There have been rumblings from the publisher, Mayfair Games, about a reprint, but they never seem to have a date.  Regardless, if you can get your hands on a copy, we highly recommend it. Oh, yeah, and Junior inadvertantly gets highly vulgar to start off, so make sure you listen for that.  Trust us, you can't miss it.  Sorry, Mom.

On this rainy day in April, The Arcade Castle decided to distract themselves from the boredom and woes that only come from being stuck inside during rainy weather. Searching through the archives they come across a game that reminds them of their youth; halcyon days filled with designing cities, relaxing music, and bulldozing schools and libraries to get a higher population count. However, as they open the game and begin reading the extensive tome that acts as the rulebook to playing this game, will Arcade Castle be overjoyed, or underwhelmed, by this mid-90s card game by Mayfair Games and Maxis Games? Can the budding city of ArcadeCastleopolis survive disaster?! In this (slightly delayed) episode, Arcade Castle examines SimCity The Card Game. In stores from 1994 to 1995, this CCG saw several starter sets and trading card paks. But can this game live up to players' expectations? Does this card game sucessfully capture the strategy and gameplay from the video game series?   Episode Outline:  00:00-15:00: Discussion about the SIM franchise and how SimCity as a videogame works. Once Upon a Powerup: The Story of Will Wright and the Simulated City. 15:00-35:00: Examination of the rules and gameplay of SimCity: The Card Game. 35:00-52:00: Comparing SimCity: The Card Game to the SimCity franchise. How do both games function? What core gameplay mechanics and strategies drive each in turn? What expectations do videogamers bring to the table when playing SimCity: The Card Game? Does this card game meet those expectations? 52:00-64:00: Breakdown Discussion: How faithful should a licensee be when they are adapting a videogame into a boardgame or card game? Can you truly adapt a video game from digital into analog?   If, after listening to the podcast, you desire more, you can find us at: www.arcadecastle.blogspot.com Additionally, you can find us on Itunes (and a number of podcast services), Twitter, Facebook, BoardGameGeek, and you can contact us at: contactarcadecastle@gmail.com Also, if you like the new theme song, check out Tony Robot! https://www.facebook.com/louisvilletonyrobot/

This is a light game for two players all about quilting. It mixes a rondel-style purchase process for acquiring quilt pieces with a very Tetris-like placement process. Through this you are trying to create the most efficient 10x10 quilt grid possible, as holes in quilts are generally a bad thing. Over a span of about 30 minutes, players (usually) alternate turns attaining buttons - the game's currency - and then use them to snatch up useful quilt squares. Like any quilt, we explore which parts of Patchwork are particularly inspiring and which suffer from rather poor stitchwork. A typical Patchwork layout Which three pieces are available to the current player at the moment Presuming more pieces aren't added, the next time this player passes a Button square they'll collect 11 buttons A player's final quilt - only 3 missing squares!   PLUGS - (48:45): Remember how we said we had changes in store? By Paco Garcia Jaen The last of the 5 DVDs we created. We end the series with some of the best interviews we recorded at the show. It was a pretty spectacular show this year with some genuinely amazing games and new companies being seen for the first time, and new trend of companies that have never created boardgames taking some first steps into the industry. Also a lot of new companies, very often with just one or two people at the helm. Overall, Spiel showed a very healthy face of the industry, both in terms of players and companies willing and able to make an effort to come to Germany, that is likely to continue and expand in 2013. The first interview is with the managing director of Gale Force 9. Paul takes us through Spartacus the board game, as well as the philosophy behind the company and some plans for the future. We then came back to Europe to interview Lorenzo Silva, from Cranio Creations, creators of Dungeon Fighter amongst other games. As well as discussing the massive success of the game, which was largely unexpected, we talk about their new games, Like, The Social Game and 1969. It was also my pleasure to get together again with Andrei Novak, from NSKN Legendary Games and see their new games. But this meet also came with the added bonus of meeting Agniegska Kopera, one of the really clever minds behind the games the company produces. And from Europe to South America. There weren't many companies from the South American continent, but Sagaze, a Peruvian Company run by Martin Williams. Martin has a very interesting approach to games and is truly passionate about spreading the word. His puzzle and football games, as well as the more abstract games he’s designed are indeed worth a good look. The success of Days of Wonder as a company is truly remarkable. They have an incredible ability to come out with great game after great game and the expansions for Small World and ticket to Ride continue to be popular after so many years. We talked to their European PR manager to find out about their newest game, Shadows over Camelot, which has been re-formatted into a card game that looks truly excellent. And lastly we have a true legend of boardgaming world, Larry Roznai from Mayfair Games. Although he will be very modest and quick to give credit to anyone and everyone else in the company, his vision has taken the company to being a multi-million dollar company and have the game that catapulted boardgaming into the notoriety that has continue to expand to our days. With a catalogue of games that would make people’s eyes water in anticpation, Mayfair has established itself as an industry leader. The short, when Larry talk, you listen. And listen good!

We return to the bizarre cant of Letterkenny, invoking specifically the term "ferda," which is a contraction of "for the boys/girls." It is a great way to punctuate a sentence, especially if you do not wish to be understood--but that is true of all cant. Relatedly, if you haven't already, please do peruse our own glossary on sowronggames.com! We are not above our own cant, especially given our penchant for acronyms.Games Played Last Week:02:07 -My Island (Reiner Knizia, KOSMOS, 2023)05:48 -Too Many Bones: Unbreakable (Josh J.
