Yes, our show is called Going Analog, so you know we love our video games -- but how do board games bring in the digital vibe that we love into the tabletop medium? Luckily, we found the perfect guests to ask: Level 99 Games, the publisher of video-game-inspired fare such as the recent Bullet series, BattleCON, and Exceed! Joshua Van Laningham, Production and Design Lead at Level 99, and Ferdinand Capitulo, Head of Media at Level 99 and the Cardboard Stacker himself, join us to discuss which aspects we've seen in board games and how they designed the "feel" of certain video game genres into their lineup. Plus, how is theme symbiotically integrated into certain game designs, and when does it pay to abstractify certain thematic steps (and when does it not)? Topics this episode: Christina (host): What are some other games that have given us the "video game" vibe? Ferdinand (guest): What are some great examples of crafting mechanisms we've seen in games? Josh (guest): Abstraction in board games

Is one better than the other? Listen to this episode and find out!Reads-based players are often characterized by playing moves after guessing what the opponent’s move is. The point is that they play on mix-ups and capitalize on opponents being predictable.Logic-based players don’t have time for those things. They play the best card in the correct situation. They tend to like overly safe moves and “punish” people for not playing “optimally.”It’s an understanding of your player and your game. Reads VS Logic might not be the paradigms your game revolves around, but the mere identification of the paradigms in your game is important. This blog supports an RSS Feed which you can add to your podcast app of choice to automatically get each episode as it releases! This includes exciting fixes and clarifications to the rules and graphic design of the game. Plus, listen to find out how trying to create the "final" version of a game can be challenging, but rewarding!Given that this is a good chance for us to do so, we're doing a wording and templating pass across most, if not all, BattleCON's cards. The goal of these changes are mostly to improve the game's clarity and consistency. We want you to not have to wonder about how an effect resolves, so that you can get back to playing ASAP.We're standardized a lot of the wording and have included new Keywords that are just more intuitive. For example, "move directly" is now called "Teleport", easily conveying the type of movement it actually is!This blog supports an RSS Feed which you can add to your podcast app of choice to automatically get each episode as it releases! What is our goal when adjusting a character? Is it important that they're all S tier tournament viable? What do we usually look at when balancing? Find out the answers in this episode! The goal of balance is to make everyone viable; not exactly tournament viable. Some match-ups may be 40-60's or 30-70's, but your player skill can still influence the final outcome.Generally, BattleCON balance falls in the middle of "have a kit that can deal with anything" and "have a kit that emphasizes your strong gimmick."Characters like Kaitlyn, Arec, and Ottavia have been fixed and are looking balanced, while certain characters like Sagas continue to present a problem in terms of balance and clarity. This blog supports an RSS Feed which you can add to your podcast app of choice to automatically get each episode as it releases! He and Marco talk about games as a platform. If you're a fan of a "game series" like Pokemon or Dark Souls, then you'll definitely know what we're talking about. What makes a game a good platform? What are the advantages and pitfalls? All that and more on this episode!A game is a platform when it continuously builds content on top of a pre-laid-out system (think of Pokemon or BattleCON).A game must first be a platform before it can become a service. A game that is not mutable, updateable, or extendable is usually hard to turn into a service. One must remember that there is a certain expectation to be met, but this must be balanced with a healthy dose of innovation to keep a platform fresh. This blog supports an RSS Feed which you can add to your podcast app of choice to automatically get each episode as it releases! Sometimes, dear listeners, the news does matter, and in such instances our hosts feel under-equipped to address them properly. Such is the nature of crippling incompetence. In this episode, I talk to Silent Eric (@Silent0Eric) about Battle Connection, a card game by Level 99 Games that translates mechanics unique to the fighting game video game genre into a format that allows people without the reflexes and practiced precision of esports pros to experience the high level mind games that make fighting games so engaging. We take some diversions to talk about other card games in brief, as well, particularly Exceed and David Sirlin's Yomi, which are card games in the same genre, but with somewhat different goals. Next week, I'll be talking about Earthbound! If you have questions or comments about that game, feel free to send them to me on Twitter (@antoidsyo)! Brad Talton, designer of BattleCon and Pixel Tactics, discusses dueling games. Brad has been creating dueling combat games for years and has found incredible success with his company, Level 99 Games. The post Dueling Games with Brad Talton appeared first on Board Game Design Lab.
In this episode, we talk about games to play while bar-hopping, the Whitehack RPG, BattleCon, and the Ascension app. Boy, it's a good thing we didn't play more games over the past couple of weeks, or we would never have been able to keep this under an hour...
Ambie, Cassadi, and Crystal discuss Rolling Stock, Power Grid Deluxe, and Lotus. We talk about good two-player games, and Crystal goes over the origins of the word "alliance."
Richard is delighted to be joined by Brad Talton Jnr, who runs Level 99 Games and has brought such delights to the table such as Battlecon and Pixel Tactics. We talk about how Brad got into the hobby before dicussing more about Pixel Tactics, Battlecon and others in the Level99 Games back catalogue and chatting about Seventh Cross, which will come to Kickstarter in the Autumn. Brad also helps answer Niki's (Lost Panda's) Battlecon Questions and we talk dining room boardgame etiquette. Richard does an awful Fight Intro soundbite as well. Sometimes it just seems right to get someone on the podcast. No they don't have to be known in the industry, or be internet famous, or have something to casually promote. They just bring some good old fashioned conversation to the table and a lot of laughs as well. This was the case with Niki, who after listening to the now infamous trilogy of Jeremy Greer, Bryan Wade and Charles Turner asked if she could be on and talk about her boardgaming. The episode you hear is only about 40% of what we talked about before we decided to actually record the show, which maybe explains the giggling at the beginning but not the rest of the nonsense that ensues. We spoke about a fair number of games, all of which are mentioned in some shape or form below. Niki was a delight to have on the show. No guest this week as Tom introduces Eric to the weird and wonderful world of tabletop games with Battlecon, a badass and super-fun board game that simulates 2D fighting videogames like Mortal Kombat. Yes, it's a big ol' box full of cards, tokens, boards, rules, and exceptions to rules. Tom can't get enough of the strategy and flashy theme. But will Eric find the fun within the cards, text, and numbers? Listen and find out, my dude. Want to see a photo of some Battlecon attacks? Follow this link: http://bit.ly/1MdPReF
Matt and Quinns are desperate to talk about Infinity, while Paul's been playing Battlecon. Also, a wild CEO appears!
Review of BattleCON War of Indines
Level 99 has been a company I’ve been very keen on since I learned about Brad Talton some three years ago. I backed their Kickstarter project for Mystic Empyrean and since they’ve had a whole load of projects that have been successful, which is pretty good! They are the minds behind BattleCon, one of the best fighting games out there. Also, of course, its expansion. Pixel Tactics also features as a fantastic game, by the way! Now they are again in Kickstarter with a game called Argent: The Consortium, a game the promises to mix Euro and Ameritrash experiences so everyone has a way to play that suits their tastes. And it sounds jolly good too, with some really cool victory conditions. But don’t let me give you any spoilers before the podcast. Enjoy the show!
For our eleventh episode, we talk to Brad, who is both a designer (Pixel Tactics, BattleCon) and a publisher - Level 99 Games.
There are quite a few fighting games out there and I think it’s fair to say that few come close to Yomi and BattleCon. And yet that doesn’t deter some people from trying to bring out more experiences that will match, and beat the mighty duo. This is what V3G is trying to do with Incredibrawl and for that they’ve gone to Kickstarter to entice and attract the much needed players and funds that a game needs to hit the tables. Incredibrawl has a few interesting features, though, like modular rules to make the game more or less complex as you play it, and the possibility of a digital version in the – hopefully – not too distant future. But what is the game all about, and is there anything the designers can say to convince you to pledge your money? Let’s hope this interview brings some light to that question!
