When developing a business centered around Japanese prints, there are many factors to consider: the audience, the history, and how you want to be perceived by the public. The appeal of the Japanese aesthetic, along with your own personal aesthetic and brand identity, can also be just as important to your business. On this episode of The Unfinished Print, I speak with Malene Wagner, a gallerist, curator, writer, and art historian whose business operates under the name Tiger Tanuki. Malene shares her passion for collecting and selling Japanese prints, and we explore the European perspective on Japanese prints and printmaking. We also dive into Japanese aesthetics and how they are interpreted through a Western lens. Additionally, Malene discusses how these aesthetics influence her brand, Tiger Tanuki, the role history plays in shaping her business, and her upcoming book. Print publishers are given if known. Malene Wagner & Tiger Tanuki - Instagram, website ukiyo-e - is a multi colour woodblock print generally associated with the Edo Period (1603-1867) of Japan. What began in the 17th Century as prints of only a few colours, evolved into an elaborate system of production and technique into the Meiji Period (1868-1912). With the advent of photography and other forms of printmaking, ukiyo-e as we know it today, ceased production by the late 19th Century.  Uniqlo -  a Japanese clothing brand known for its affordable, minimalist, and high-quality everyday wear. It focuses on functional designs, using innovative fabrics like Heattech for warmth and AIRism for breathability. Uniqlo is popular worldwide for offering essential wardrobe staples and often collaborates with well-known designers and artists to create unique collections. Clear Day With A Southern Breeze (1831) is a print usually known as "Red Fuji." From the series Thirty Six Views of Mt. Fuji this print was actually pink, red was used in later impressions by publisher Nishimuraya Yohachi.  The Great Wave off Kanagawa - is a woodblock print designed by Katsushika Hokusai in 1831. It is very famous.  Yayoi Kusama -  is a pioneering Japanese artist known for her immersive installations and polka dot motifs that explore themes of infinity, identity, and mental health. Born in 1929 in Matsumoto, Japan, Kusama began her artistic journey through painting and avant-garde practices, eventually moving to New York in the late 1950s, where she became a key figure in the pop art and feminist movements. Her works, range from large-scale installations like the "Infinity Mirror Rooms" to her vibrant sculptures and paintings. Kusama's art is a deeply personal expression of her own experiences with mental illness, transforming her obsessions into stunning visual experiences that resonate globally. Today, she is celebrated as one of the most influential contemporary artists, with exhibitions and installations that captivate audiences worldwide. From "Life Is The Heart of A Rainbow", Installation (2017) MANGA - was an exhibition from May 23 - August 26, 2019 held at the British Museum in London, England.  shin hanga - is a style of Japanese woodblock printmaking that emerged in the early 20th century, marking the end of the nishiki-e period. Originating around 1915 under the direction of Watanabe Shōzaburō (1885-1962), the art form responded to the foreign demand for "traditional" Japanese imagery. Shin hanga artists focused on motifs like castles, bridges, famous landscapes, and bamboo forests. The style was initiated when Watanabe discovered Austrian artist Fritz Capelari (1884-1950) and commissioned him to design prints for Watanabe's budding printing house. This collaboration led to the evolution of shin hanga into a distinctive new style of Japanese woodblock printing. The shin hanga movement thrived until its inevitable decline after the Second World War (1939-1945). sōsaku-hanga - or creative prints, is a style of printmaking which is predominantly, although not exclusively, prints made by one person. It started in the early twentieth century in Japan, in the same period as the shin-hanga movement. The artist designs, carves, and prints their own works. The designs, especially in the early days, may seem rudimentary but the creation of self-made prints was a breakthrough for printmakers moving away from where only a select group of carvers, printers and publishers created woodblock prints.  Tomoo Inagaki (1902-1980) - introduced to mokuhanga by Onchi Kōshirō and Un'cihi Hiratsuka in 1923. Beginning in 1924, Inagaki published his first prints in magazines such as Shi to hanga (issue 13), Hanga (issues 6, 9/10, 11, 14), and Kitsutsuki, and exhibited with the Nihon Sôsaku-Hanga Kyôkai (Japan Creative Print Association). He became a member of the Nihon Hanga Kyôkai (Japan Print Association) in 1932 and participated in various post-war international competitions, including the Paris, Tokyo, and Lugano biennales. His cat prints have been highly collectible. More info can be found at Viewing Japanese Prints, here. The Rival Cats - 18" x 24" (1960's - 1970's) Oliver Statler (1915-2002) -  was an American author and scholar and collector of mokuhanga. He had been a soldier in World War 2, having been stationed in Japan. After his time in the war Statler moved back to Japan where he wrote about Japanese prints. His interests were of many facets of Japanese culture such as accommodation, and the 88 Temple Pilgrimage of Shikoku. Oliver Statler, in my opinion, wrote one of the most important books on the sōsaku-hanga movement, “Modern Japanese Prints: An Art Reborn.” Frances Blakemore (1906-1997) - was an American-born artist, writer, philanthropist and curator of modern Japanese mokuhanga. She lived in Japan for over fifty years and helped to support the burgeoning sōsaku hanga print movement of the 1950s. Blakemore worked in mokuhanga (collaborating with Watanabe Shōzaburō) and making self-printed and carved prints. She also worked in oils.  Japanese Bath (1937) - 11 7/8" x 9 5/8 " Yoshitomo Nara - is a renowned Japanese contemporary artist and is celebrated for his distinctive paintings and sculptures featuring figures with large heads and expressive eyes, often exploring themes of innocence, rebellion, and solitude.  Change The History (2007) acrylic on wood 74-7/16" × 55-1/2" × 3-1/8" Mingei - is a Japanese term that translates to "folk craft" or "people's art." It refers to a movement that emerged in the early 20th century, emphasizing the value and beauty of traditional, handmade crafts created by anonymous artisans. Mingei focuses on everyday objects, such as pottery, textiles, furniture, and utensils, that reflect the culture and daily life of the people who made them. Lawrin Smith - is the author of the book "The Prints of Yoshitoshi: A Complete Illustrated Catalog" (2009). This comprehensive catalog focuses on the works of Tsukioka Yoshitoshi. The book provides detailed descriptions and illustrations of Yoshitoshi's prints, showcasing his significant contributions to the ukiyo-e genre and his influence on modern printmaking. Wabi-sabi is a Japanese aesthetic philosophy that celebrates the beauty of imperfection, transience, and the natural cycle of life. It combines two concepts: "wabi," which refers to rustic simplicity and tranquility found in nature, and "sabi,"which denotes the beauty that comes with age and wear. Wabi-sabi values simplicity, asymmetry, and the unique characteristics of objects and experiences, encouraging appreciation for the impermanent and humble aspects of life. This philosophy is reflected in various forms of art, architecture, and design, emphasizing natural materials and handcrafted items, and fostering mindfulness and acceptance of the imperfections that make life beautiful. A-yo - is a renowned Japanese artist associated with the Gutai Art Association, an avant-garde group that emerged in post-war Japan. Known for his vibrant colors and distinctive style, Ay-O's work often incorporates elements of nature, light, and movement, reflecting themes of playfulness and spontaneity. He engages with materials in innovative ways and has explored performance art as part of his creative expression. With extensive exhibitions both in Japan and internationally, Ay-O has made significant contributions to contemporary art, emphasizing the joy of creation and the aesthetic experience. Marcel Duchamp (1887–1968) was a French-American artist and a key figure in modern art, known for his significant influence on the Dada movement and conceptual art. He initially trained as a painter but became renowned for challenging traditional notions of art through his controversial works, such as "Fountain"(1917), a readymade sculpture of a urinal that questioned the definition of art and the role of the artist. Duchamp's other notable pieces, including "The Large Glass" (1915–1923) and "Bicycle Wheel" (1913), explored themes of chance and perception. His innovative ideas about art as a conceptual experience rather than a purely visual one continue to resonate, solidifying his status as one of the most influential artists of the 20th century.   Fountain (1917) replica (1964)   Naoko Matsubara - is a contemporary Japanese printmaker known for her expertise in mokuhanga. Born in Osaka, she studied at Kyoto Seika University, where she specialized in printmaking and mastered the techniques of this ancient art form. Matsubara's work often blends traditional methods with contemporary themes, exploring the relationship between nature, culture, and identity. Her prints are characterized by intricate details, vibrant colors, and a deep appreciation for the materials and techniques involved in woodblock printing. She teaches and promotes mokuhanga both in Japan and abroad, exhibiting her work in galleries and museums worldwide and receiving numerous awards for her contributions to the field. Naoko's interview with The Unfinished Print can be found, here.    Gihachiro Okuyama (1907-1981) - was a prominent Japanese printmaker and painter associated with the sōsaku hanga (creative prints) movement. Born in Tokyo, he studied traditional Japanese painting and was influenced by Western art styles, leading to innovative woodblock prints characterized by bold colors and dynamic compositions that blend traditional aesthetics with modern elements. Throughout his career, Okuyama exhibited extensively in Japan and internationally, contributing significantly to contemporary printmaking while also playing a vital role in art education by sharing his expertise with future generations. His work reflects a deep engagement with the cultural exchanges between East and West during the post-war period.     Moonscape - 10" x 21"   Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1798-1861) - is considered one of the last “masters” of the ukiyo-e genre of Japanese woodblock printmaking. His designs range from landscapes, samurai and Chinese military heroes, as well as using various formats for his designs such as diptychs and triptychs.   Prince Rokuson Tsunemoto from Suikoden of Japanese Heroes (1843) 10" x 7"    Utagawa Kunisada III (1848–1920) - was a ukiyo-e print designer from the Utagawa school of mokuhanga. Kunisada III's print designs were designed during the transformation of the Edo Period (1603-1868) into the Meiji Period (1868-1912) of Japanese history, where his prints showed the technological, architectural and historical changes in Japan's history.    Kabuki Plays - Narukami and Princess Toki (ca. 1890's) triptych   Saitō Kiyoshi (1907-1997) - was a Japanese woodblock printmaker and artist who worked in the sōsaku hanga style of mokuhanga. HIs fame outside of Japan was fairly comprehensive with his peak fame being in the 1950's and 1960's. For a comprehensive book on his life and times, Saitō Kiyoshi: Graphic Awakening published by The John & Mable Ringling Museum is an excellent source. Piet Mondrian is considered an icon of modern art, but he didn't start off that way. While he always loved art, he got his degree in education. Mondrian's early paintings were somewhat traditional landscapes. He experimented with Impressionist and Post Impressionist styles, then moved on to some Cubist influence. His major breakthrough was with the De Stijl movement focusing on the basic elements of art using straight lines and primary colored rectangles. Mondrian was one of the most prominent theorists of the group as he developed a style he referred to as Neoplasticism. While I have covered Mondrian previously, I wanted to release this episode today to celebrate the publication of my first article for The Art of Education University. Can geometric shapes heal the world? That's what the artists of the De Stijl movement—which came of age in the Netherlands after World War I—believed. Piet Mondrian is one of the most famous members of this group, which forbade circles and embraced light, color, and geometry as a way to move past the chaos of the war. As AFAR contributing writer Chris Colin discovers on a trip to Utrecht, that's not quite as bizarre as it sounds. The recording of the album "De Stijl" by The White Stripes marked a pivotal moment in the band's career and the modern rock music landscape. Released in 2000, this sophomore effort showcased the raw and minimalist sound that would become their signature. Recorded on an 8-track analog tape machine in a small Detroit studio, the album captured the essence of garage rock revivalism with its stripped-down instrumentation and electrifying energy. Jack White's frenetic guitar riffs and primal vocals, combined with Meg White's primal and no-frills drumming, created a sound that was both timeless and innovative. "De Stijl" drew inspiration from various musical genres, from blues to punk, and showcased the band's lyrical and musical prowess. With tracks like "Hello Operator" and "Apple Blossom," the album offered a glimpse into the White Stripes' musical craftsmanship, setting the stage for their meteoric rise in the years to come. It remains a crucial piece of the band's discography and a testament to their enduring influence on the alternative rock scene. #jackwhite #thewhitestripes #indiemusic

Jim Scheller's vessel designs are informed by simplicity and abstraction. His work is inspired by Neoplasticism and the artists of that period, beginning with the De Stijl movement of the early 20th century. Always a scientist, he is fascinated with exploring the processes that use heat and gravity to bring his designs to life in glass. Initially introduced to glass kilnforming in a 2012 Bullseye workshop, Scheller shifted his professional focus following a long and enjoyable career as an engineer and technologist working with creatives worldwide in the athletic footwear and apparel industries. Experimenting and learning about art and glass as a medium quickly became his passion – a transformation he describes as being “taken hostage by kilnforming glass.” Scheller further developed his technical and artistic abilities in 2014 and 2015 at the Professional Kilnforming Residency at Pilchuck Glass School in Stanwood, Washington. Gracious mentoring from many of the best artists and friends – such as Steve Klein and Richard Parrish – further encouraged and refined Scheller's goals as a glass maker. Early vessel forms were exhibited in For the Love of Glass, at the Marietta Cobb Museum of Art, Atlanta, in 2017.  After two decades on the Chehalem Mountain outside Portland, Oregon, in 2018 Scheller moved his home studio to the Illinois prairie near his son Phillip, where they make decorative kiln formed glass art. Macoupin Prairie Glassworks is located in Staunton, Illinois, near the artist's childhood home of Mt. Olive, a small town on old Route 66 halfway between Springfield and St. Louis.  There, Scheller takes great pleasure in pushing kilnforming limits and developing new techniques. His works are composed with glass sheets, crushed glass (frit), and glass slabs (billets), then fired to over 1400 degrees F. This first episode explores the White Stripes debut albums, from the self titled album, through the bedroom-made sophomore album De Stijl, and the record that put them on the national stage, White Blood Cells, featuring Dead Leaves and The Dirty Ground and Fell In Love with a Girl.--Jack White rose to legendary musician status via his breakthrough band, The White Stripes. Coming out as a blues rock, punk aesthetic garage rock band with child-like drummer Meg White, The White Stripes paved the way for a lot of acts to come. As their success grew, Jack White branched out into other projects, including the classic rock inspired "super group" The Raconteurs, and Led Zeppelin-spirit revival, hard as nails "super group," The Dead Weather. As Jack gained momentum elsewhere, The White Stripes came to an end, leaving room for Jack White to explore a solo career. Throughout his solo career, he started honing his comfort material -- country, blues, and fuzz rock -- moving toward new grounds with experimental noise, high tech production, and unexpected plot twists.Tyler, being a conseur of pop and knower of all things music, and Greg, a Jack White super fan, have a lot to say on Jack White, including a plethora of insights and context into the creation of this music, the cultural impact of Jack White and his embedded philosophies, and the growth of self and artist.

The Dutch duo based in Berlin, Robin Koek and Nick Lapien, better known as Artefakt, are starting a new chapter in their De Stijl narrative; the record label they founded in 2019 with the goal to further explore their sound and host affiliated projects and collaborations with like-minded friends. The latter takes the first significant step and starts the new series 'Collaborations,' with the idea to capture extended studio improvisations and craft an EP based on live sessions. For the inaugural release in the series, Artefakt welcomes their close friend and fellow Berliner, Claudio PRC.  'Collaborations I' seems like a match made in heaven where Artefakt and Claudio bring their A-game and deliver a four-track release that explores depths of hypnotic, atmospheric techno, and ambient. The release has two faces. The A-side sees Artefakt and Claudio PRC channeling their inner atmospheric techno side with dance floor DNA all over it. Where on the B-side, things slow down and gradually dissolve into gauzy layers of a melancholic drone. The story unfolds with 'Gaia.' A mood piece with a rumbling groove and deep emotional undercurrents. A defining element of 'Gaia' is an unsettling piano that flourishes and warbles with atmospheric textures to create a complex take on melancholy. 'Dwelling' continues in a similar fashion and builds on the abstract sonic world with its long, lush cosmic pads and familiar deep techno sequence. 'Gaia' is the stand out of two, but 'Dwelling' sounds like a more versatile chameleon track that could find a place at various times during the night in DJ sets. The B-side kicks off with 'Sonic Rite,' our premiere for today. 'Sonic Rite' calms things down with a significant drop in pace but keeps the same hypnotic atmosphere with an ever-evolving bassline sequence and far-east-inspired flute-like melodies. An otherworldly female voice adds a nice transcendental touch that falls like a jigsaw into the place of this mesmerizing 'slow-burner.'  'Collaborations I' closes with 'Distant Light,' a dark drone ambient journey that sounds like a glacial majesty with peaceful oscillations. It's an ideal listening piece for moments of tranquility and self-reflection.  With 'Collaborations I,' the first chapter of the series that features Delsin affiliate Claudio PRC, Artefakt sets the bar high and gets us excited for what is to come. 'Collaborations I' will be available in record stores and streaming services on March 25th.  https://soundcloud.com/artefakt-official https://soundcloud.com/claudioprc Artefakt on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/artefaktofficial/ Claudio PRC on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/claudioprc/ www.itsdelayed.com www.instagram.com/_itsdelayed_ www.facebook.com/itsdelayed https://t.me/itsdelayed

There's no fat on this album, it harkens back to a simpler time of old Detroit blues and punk-inspired garage rock. There are tasty lo-fi guitar riffs and distorted harmonica parts that are sick af, plus occasional mellow organic vibes and simplistic songwriting at its best. Luke and John break down the history of Jack White and his many musical ventures, his relationship with Meg, the band's influences, and the artists that they in turn influenced. SUPPORT MUSIC IS NOT A GENRE ON PATREON WATCH MUSIC is not a GENRE VIDEOS and MORE Rock is like a slab of sidewalk. When it's hot, it expands. When it's not, it contracts. In the mid 1960s, rock was super hot. Thus you get complex expansions of the simple rock sound like chamber pop & concept albums. Same for the mid 1970s when prog rock reigned. In the late 1960s when the excesses of the previous eras were being picked apart, rock contracted into the simplicity of blues rock like Led Zeppelin & Let It Bleed era Stones. Same for the 1970s, when punk popped through prog rock's overinflated balloon. And again in the early 1990s, when grunge stripped away the glam of hair metal. Then there's the garage rock revival of the early 2000s. By the end of the 1990s, rock had become warmed over grunge, overbearing nu metal, and watered down emo. Another purging was needed, and garage rock came in to do that. The Strokes, the Hives, the Vines, and in a HUGE way, the White Stripes. It's no accident that the White Stripes called their second album De Stijl, after the Dutch art movement that prized simple geometry & primary colors (think Mondrian). Jack & Meg White restricted both their look and their sound to three colors. Black, white & red. Drums, guitar, vocals. It was a deliberate limitation – a way to explore ultimate freedom within the strictest form. I was slow to jump on the White Stripes train. My first response was that it was reductive in a deliberately artsy way. It was trying to prove a point that you don't need all this new-fangled stuff to make good music. As much as I love the neo-lo-fi analog rock of Lenny Kravitz & the Stripes & others, I'm not a fan of people who don't acknowledge the times they're living in. As they developed, I realized three things. First, I was right about all that, and it's actually a GOOD thing. That kind of strictured exploration forces ultra creativity. Second, they were writing and performing kick-ass songs, so who cares how or why. Third, they WERE acknowledging the times by very deliberately going against them – by showing that no amount of hype can make a bad song good, and a great song will shine through the most sparing production. I don't pick sides. I like crazy blown up rock like prog & chamber pop. And I like stripped down sound like the Hives (my fave of that era), early Clash and early Led Zeppelin. As always, good music is good music no matter what it is or where it comes from. Since I pretty much like it all, when I make stripped down music I tend to throw in some more progressive elements too. You can hear that very clearly on these two songs, one from the White Stripes era and one just released: REC – “Some Things Happen” (from the album Parts and Labour) REC – “No Way Out for Me” (from the album Symphony for the Weird) One side note about this never-ending cycle of expansion & contraction: Pay close attention to NOW. We're coming out of a period when rock has not dominated the charts. But many young, new acts are re-embracing several different eras of rock. I predict in three years or less, rock will make a HUGE return to popularity. Were you a fan of the White Stripes? Do you prefer music with more layers? Have you ever believed it when the media or a critic or some artist trying to get attention says that “rock is dead”? Or do you see the cycle that all pop music goes through? Discuss dammit! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/nick-dematteo/support

Eduardo Terrazas's learned practice spans architecture, art, and design, achieving a lively mix of geometric study and handcraft. Using an approach that marries South American folk art and European avant-garde influences, Terrazas has produced more than 600 works over 45 years. He first became interested in folk art as a museographer, later collaborating with the Huichol, a native Indian ethnic group. His series “Constellations” (2013) involves traditional techniques of yarn painting on wood board and fine beadwork in beeswax, processes that render brightly colored or monochrome mathematical patterns with the formal rigor of De Stijl. His architectural training has led him to develop many projects in Mexican cities, while his design background informed his work as a collaborator on the design of the logo for the 1968 Summer Olympics. While Alex has been a fan for years, this was Mike’s first deep dive on the band—and let’s just say he’s probably going to enrage some people with this episode. Despite how some might feel about this band, the White Stripes emerged during a time when pop culture was starving for hard rock, which alone solidifies their place among many of the greats. Two opposing elements form the framework of the White Stripes, it's what makes them unique, strange, and so interesting. Jack and Meg White shroud themselves with mystery in their personal lives and they embrace cheap gimmicks such as a colour code, but the music they play harkens back to old Mississippi Blues from the 1930's with a Iggy and The Stooges 70's garage rock twist. The White Stripes are that simple in their music, and that complicated and mysterious with everything else.  It’s easy to point to their 2003 release of Elephant as the White Stripes best work because it has their biggest hit, Seven Nation Army on it, but the album is much more than that. Elephant saw a maturity in the band and the songwriting, more than the minimalistic rock sound of White Blood Cells, and more than the polish pop twist to their blues rock sound on De Stijl and their debut self-titled album. Who knew blues-tinged rock & roll scaled back to its most essential elements — one guitar, a simple drum kit and sneering vocals, could top the charts in the early 2000's. But as Jack says, "The whole point of the White Stripes is the liberation of limiting yourself." The limitation of being a two piece rock band and analog recording in a pro-tools world was against the grain and off the beaten path. But Jack and Meg never took the easy route, and that’s why they and their works like Elephant will be in the rock pantheon with their heroes.

From their very first jam sessions in the attic of 1203 Ferdinand, Jack and Meg White were intent on doing their own thing. You can see that through the early shows, the singles, the first album — and turning down some of the coolest indie labels around to maintain creative control. But the biggest example up to this point may be the making of "De Stijl," and album that got The White Stripes mentioned amongst heavyweight up-and-comers in the early '00s. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

This week our all-new album analysis and review of the White Stripes sophomore LP release, De Stijl, comes to its epic conclusion! In the spring of 2000 Jack and Meg White had a handful of singles, a debut LP, some local rock and roll stardom and a couple of day jobs under their belts on the chilly streets of Detroit – but all of that was about to change. The married duo that had baffled so many with their color schemes and brother/sister mythology found their real-life relationship at an end, and their musical path at a crossroads. This is the environment that would bring out one of the most colorful, hard-edged blues/pop records to grace the new millennium, and the last big step in the direction of the kind of fame there would be no turning back from for the White Stripes. In part two of our two-part coverage, we explore from Death Letter and beyond, going through track-by-track and uncovering some hidden meaning in this rock and roll manifesto. Canciones retorcidas y vocación poética a cargo del gallego Don the Tiger.

A few weeks ago, NPR asked us to come up with a list of definitive Noise Pop (the genre) songs for their website, NPR.org. It was a tall order and a fascinating challenge for us, and of course, we eagerly accepted. With tunes from the early '70s to modern songs released just a few months ago on our radar, we studiously dove into the decades to find the top 100. We sorted them chronologically in order to to show the evolution of the sound. The full list will post on NPR later this month, but for now we've assembled a teaser podcast episode that chronicles the genre's migration over the past 4 decades. Enjoy this sampler platter and stay tuned for the announcement of the full list coming soon. Tracklist: 1. "Rock & Roll” – The Velvet Underground, Loaded (1970)2. Piet Mondrian is the epitome of the abstract painter. He cherished the term,“ abstract,“ which to him was the fundamental and the universal quality of art untrammelled by detail that could give expression to the deepest, underlying structures.

As expected, missed records from 2009 keep rolling in, with the Meercaz LP on Tic Tac Totally (reissue of Gulcher Records CD from early 2009) currently dominating the stereo. For those that are also late to the game on this one, Meercaz is based outta Portland, Oregon and even shares a member with one of my favorite bands from that city, Meth Teeth. Definitely one of those records that doesn't sound contemporary, but more like some long lost mid-70s proto-punk group hailing from some industrial city in middle America. Heavy riffage, tone deaf vocals and plenty o' weird analog synth bleeps and burps thrown in for serious left tiltage. Songs range from two-minute, fist pumping MC5-styled jams to seven-minute stormy industro-punk excursions. Highly recommended. Also late on the 2009 chopping block is the sprawling 2LP speaker shredder that is the new Shit & Shine. Over an hour of repetitive riffs that sound spewed through slashed amps and run over with a rusty lawnmower. 229-2299 Girls Against Shit also makes brief dalliances into dub, disco and, uhhm, race car humour(?). Yeah, anyways, fans of the early, damaged end of the Butthole Surfers and even the overkill fuzz-sludge of The Goslings are urged to pay attention. The painfully limited-run of the Siltbreeze 10 inch compilation Skulls Without Borders dropped in the mail slot last week, and it's an odd mix of folks trying to share the same airspace. Puffy Areolas make a nasty punk-splatter and give high hopes for their forthcoming Siltbreeze debut LP; Chickins, an FNU Ronnies off-shoot, put down a quirky number complete with raygun guitar shots; Dan Melchior plops down another grumpy blast of fuzz riffs and off-kilter guitar solos. The flipside, featuring Kurt Vile, Tommy Jay Band and Sic Alps, will be played next week...Heading back over to this side of continent, AFCGT (aka A Frames Climax Golden Twins), who have been given much love here on ETMS, drop their vinyl-only (!) release via Sub Pop next week, and I was lucky enough to be able to provide a sneak peek. Not much has changed from the Seattle juggernaut, hell, if anything, the 5 piece have beefed up their sound considerably on the more amped up tracks, and waded even deeper into their more experimental side. Not yr typical Sub Pop release, but we're pleased as all hell they've decided to put this one strictly to wax.Swimming up the coastline back to our city, Tassles sent over a few intriguing tracks of drifting bedroom electronic pleasantries. Tassles is better known in Vancouver as Sean Orr, who helms the shit detector on Beyond Robson's Morning Brew and fronts the recently reunited post-hardcore revisionists Taxes. Tassles sees Orr relaxing his jaw for a few and learning to relax a little bit. You probably won't see Tassles open for Taxes anytime soon. Either way, someone out there release fucking something from either of these...asap!Banana Head (aka Zully Adler, head of Goaty Tapes) also was kind enough to send some new jams my way. Brand new cassette of solo loner jams, absolutely perfect for these bland winter days. Goaty Tapes has come a long way since its inception a few years back; brand new tapes by HNY (awesome cassette on Not Not Fun reviewed here), Russian Tsarlag and Paradise Sisters, who have a forthcoming 12 inch due out soon on De Stijl. In the works are cassettes by El Jesus De Magico, Psychic Reality (split 12" with LA Vampires forthcoming for them on Not Not Fun) and Goaty will also head into LP territory with an Ancestral Diet full length. Get stoked, people.Hot off the heels of the much-loved seven inch, Brainbombs offshoot No Balls release a full length LP on Sweden's Release The Bats. And, of course, its in a disgustingly small pressing of 300 and sold out before it was even outta the pressing plant. Not far off the Brainbombs aesthetic of violent, hammering repetition, but, this time around with just drums and guitar, plus the occasional sax squlech and distance vocals, which may or may not be appallingly misogynistic. This meager pressing has annoyed me enough to share a ripped version with ya'll (courtesy of Soundeyet).Tassles "Brother Soft" unreleased mp3, 2010Indian Wars "Carol Anne" s/t 7" (Bachelor) 2009The Intelligence "Gettin' Classy" split w/ Unnatural Helpers 7" (Dirty Knobby) 2009Fair Ohs "Automatic" Obscene & Violent: A Tribute To GG Allin 7" (Italian Beach Babes) 2009Male Bonding "You Hate Me And I Hate You" Obscene & Violent: A Tribute To GG Allin 7" (Italian Beach Babes) 2009Chickins "Chickin Den" Skull Without Borders compilation 10" (Siltbreeze) 2009Dan Melchior "1000 Times" Skulls Without Borders compilation 10" (Siltbreeze) 2009Puffy Areolas "El Jita" Skulls Without Borders compilation 10" (Siltbreeze) 2009Meercaz "Unlust" s/t LP (Tic Tac Totally) 2009Shit & Shine "Have You Really Though About Your Presentation?" 229-2299 Girls Against Shit 2LP (Riot Season) 2009AFCGT "Black Mark" AFCGT LP (Sub Pop) 2010No Balls "Come Clean" Come Clean LP (Release The Bats) 2009Oneohtrix Point Never "Russian Mind" Russian Mind LP (No Fun Productions) 2009Afternoon Penis "...Jack Of Hearts" split w/ Eskimo King LP (Abandon Ship) 2009Banana Head "Take It Back" In The Tubs CS (Goaty Tapes) 2009Blue Sabbath Black Cheer & Nihilist Assault Group "untitled" Planned Obsolescence LP (Gnarled Forest) 2009
