Episode 574: Games that use movement points Episode release date is April 2, 2025 Show Notes This week we are doing a one episode discussion of games that use movement points as a movement. What are movement points you ask? Well, movement points regulate how far a player can move their pieces during the game. For example, players are given a specific number of "points" that can be spent to move game pieces. Different spaces or terrains on the game board may cost varying amounts of movement points to enter. Players may receive a set number of movement points each turn that can be spread across multiple pieces. Those points could fluctuate depending on card draws or dice rolls. Sometimes movement points can be part of a larger pool of actions, and movement can be part of or one of those actions. In short, movement points provide a structured way to manage in game movement while adding a tactical element to gameplay. So let's make it a point to move to the game table and discuss some games. Carnegie is definitely a good game, I think it's tough to outcompete some of the newer ones though. It was a popular blip for a sec, then kinda floated down to the lower mid of bgg pack. It's still a good game, solid 7. Maracaibo would also have a choice of action to move your ship a certain distance also for triggering spaces. Not sure if that's totally true movement points, but fairly close The only other ones I can even think of would be troop movement for war games, like War of the Ring/for Arrakis or Axis & Allies. War of the Ring is awesome! Great 2p strategy game. War for Arrakis, same designer, basically the truncated version of War of the Ring in Dune! In this episode we introduce ourselves and talk about our ongoing plays of Descent: Legends of the Dark.
We talk with Senior Designer at Fantasy Flight Games, Kara Centell-Dunk who has worked on projects like Mansions of Madness, Journeys in Middle Earth, and Descent: Legends in the Dark. We talk about game design, writing, immersion in games, and trying to create an experience for players. We also spend some time talking about Kara's other hobbies near the beginning of the episode. Games mentioned in this episode: Patchwork, Legacy of Dragonholt, Monopoly, Magic the Gathering, Dungeons and Dragons, Thunderstone, Munchkin, Arkham Horror 2nd Edition, Power Grid, Netrunner, A Mending, Welcome to the Moon, Tomb, Twilight Imperium 4th Edition, and Fog of Love.
We talk with Chief Operating Officer of Snowbright Studio, T. Caires, about sustainability in games, what they enjoy playing, and their story of gaming. Quello che vi presentiamo oggi è un episodio ricchissimo, pregno di rant, dibattiti e confronti su tanti temi e spunti che questo gioco porta con sé. In this chaotic 158th episode of the Shut Up & Sit Down podcast, Ava, Tom and Quinns are slamming bugs into walls! We're talking about the expansive box-ticker Hadrian's Wall alongside the entomologically-inclined wrasslin' of Kabuto Sumo! We also have some brief chats about our recent video reviews of Descent: Legends of the Dark and Burgle Bros 2: The Casino Capers - two be-coloned sequels of varying quality! Apologies for some slight background noise at times in this one - all three of us had various drilling going on nearby that was hard to weasel out properly! And, as Quinns mentions at the end of this one, there won't be a podcast for the next couple of weeks while we focus on getting prepped for AwSHUX. See you toward the end of October for a live special! Have a lovely weekend, folks! MARCUS BIGNEYHere comes Fantasy Flight's body, mourned by Michael Walker: who, though he had no hand in its death, shall receivethe benefit of its dying, a place in thehobby; as which of you shall not? WALKERFriends, gamers, hobbyists, lend me your ears;I come to bury Fantasy Flight, not to praise it.The evil that publishers do lives after them; The good is oft interred with their bones; So let it be with Fantasy Flight. The noble BigneyHath told you FFG was ambitious:If it were so, it was a grievous fault,And grievously hath FFG answer'd it.Here, under leave of Bigney and the rest--For Bigney is an honourable man;So are they all, all honourable men--Come I to speak in FFG's funeral. It was my friend, faithful and just to me:But Bigney says it was ambitious; And Bigney is an honourable man.It hath published many games home to RomeWhose playing did the gaming public thrill:Did this in FFG seem ambitious? When that the games were broken, FFG hath wept:Ambition should be made of sterner stuff:Yet Bigney says it was ambitious; And Bigney is an honourable man.I speak not to disprove what Bigney spoke,But here I am to speak what I do know. You all did love it once, not without cause:What cause withholds you then, to mourn for it?O judgment! thou art fled to brutish beasts,And men have lost their reason. Bear with me;My heart is in the coffin box there with expansions,And I must pause till it come back to me.01:32 AYURIS: Imperial 2030 (Mac Gerdts, PD-Verlag, 2009)Games Played Last Week:04:08 -Yokohama (Hisashi Hayashi, Tasty Minstrel Games, 2016)07:54 -Vampire Queen (Wolfgang Kramer, Schmidt Spiele, 2016)11:40 -Regicide (Paul Abrahams, Luke Badger, & Andy Richdale, Badgers from Mars, 2020)12:13 -Pickomino Deluxe (Reiner Knizia, Zoch Verlag, 2018)14:25 -Equinox (Reiner Knizia, Plan B Games, 2021)18:33 -Rhino Hero (Scott Frisco & Steven Strumpf, HABA, 2011)18:33 -Rhino Hero: Super Battle (Scott Frisco & Steven Strumpf, HABA, 2017)21:50 -The Search for Planet X (Matthew O'Malley & Ben Rosset, Renegade Game Studios, 2020)23:15 -Descent: Legends in the Dark (Kara Centell-Dunk & Nathan I. I used to tell a joke about Heimdall, but it was pretty horny. I used to tell a joke about Osiris, but it fell to pieces. I used to tell a joke about Venus, but it was masturbatory. I used to tell a joke about Sleipnir, but it didn't have legs. I used to tell a joke about Prometheus, but it needed a spark. I used to tell a joke about Draupnir, but it just didn't ever end. I used to tell a joke about Marathon, but it was a bit of a long walk. I used to tell a joke about the Hecatoncheires, but it was punching down. I used to tell a joke about Tyr, but it wasn't even-handed. I used to tell a joke about Ragnarok, but everyone knew the end already. I used to tell a joke about Jormungand, but it was very toxic. I used to tell a joke about Pandora, but it was too out of the box. I used to tell a joke about Cerberus, but it was just gatekeeping. I used to tell a joke about Yggdrasil, but I had to leaf. I used to tell a joke about the labyrinth's inhabitant, but it was bull. I used to tell a joke about the sword of Damocles, but it was over my head. I used to tell a joke about Procrustes, but I kept getting cut off. I used to tell a joke about Sisyphus, but I got tired of the repetition. I used to tell a joke about Penelope's crafting, but it was just an excuse to kill time. I used to tell a joke about the Golden Apple, but it caused too many arguments. I used to tell a joke about Gordian succession, but it was a tangled mess. I used to tell a joke about Minerva's bird, but I can't remember owl of it.01:58 AYURIS: Caylus 1303 (William Attia, Space Cowboys, 2019)Games Played Last Week:04:38 -Regicide (Paul Abrahams, Luke Badger, & Andy Richdale, Badgers from Mars, 2020)05:55 -Rhino Hero Super Battle (Scott Frisco & Steven Strumpf, HABA, 2017)06:00 -Kabuto Sumo (Tony Miller, BoardGameTables.com, 2021)06:37 -Shards of Infinity: Shadow of Salvation (Justin Gary & Ryan Sutherland, Stone Blade Entertainment, 2019)07:07 -Star Realms (Robert Dougherty & Darwin Kastle, Wise Wizard, 2014)09:06 -Root (Cole Wehrle, Leder Games, 2018)11:39 -Faiyum (Friedemann Friese, 2F-Spiele, 2020)12:45 -Descent: Legends in the Dark (Kara Centell-Dunk & Nathan I. In a particularly Nice episode of the Dicebreaker Podcast, Matt, Wheels and Meehan reimagine some of our favourite board games as romantic novels. Matt can finally chat about his time with the upcoming Descent: Legends of the Dark, Meehan's been hanging out with the Cats & Dogs of Fort's first expansion, Wheels has been preparing to explore What Waits Beneath, and everybody's been getting ready to play the new Avatar Legends RPG. We dive into the recent shipping costs and delays affecting board games, D&D and Magic: The Gathering, and consider which board game we'd like to see turned into a film. All this, and the world's first (only?) critical appraisal of the Bob the Builder music album.
In todays episode we'll talk about two games that share a common ancestry: Destinies and Descent: Legends of the Dark. Fun fact, we mention comparing these two games at the end, and then totally forget to do that. But the comparison points should be clear as we go along. Timestaps: Destinies - ( 02:43 ) Minor Mechanical Destinies Spoilers - ( 16:29 ) Spoilers end at - ( 17:50 ) Descent: Legends in the Dark - ( 41:24 ) If you enjoyed this episode, visit https://nopunincluded.com/podcast
App driven games everywhere! Have they actually become good? Or is this the end of s fad? Plus, we regale our younger days and the point this hobby became a lifestyle.
