Hailing from the Causeway Coast, Good Friend is Adam Carroll (lead vocals and bass), Izzy Curran (drums), and Andy Reid (lead guitar). These three Irish lads originally come from around Belfast/Northern Ireland but they moved to Newcastle, England to get shitty jobs and form a band. The jobs did indeed turn out to be shitty, but the band turned out great! 'We've always described our sound as Punk Rock salted by The Irish Sea. Melodic and ferocious.' The band are signed to Red Scare Industries (US) and Gunner Records (EU) and have toured the world and played with bands like MakeWar, Guerilla Poubelle & Red City Radio. Good Friend played support to The Menzingers on the 16th of April at Button Factory Dublin, where Letty interviewed Adam and Izzy of the band. In this episode, the FAQ is: Using QR Codes. Are they safe? Today's Destination is: Belfast, Northern Ireland Today's Misstep: My leaky water bottle was in the overhead bin on the airplane. Travel Advice: Secondhand stores in Belfast are good deals. FAQ: Using QR Codes. Are they safe? Answer: When you open a QR code, pay attention to the context and the brand because it could contain a virus or even worse. Be careful when accessing websites on your desktop, laptop, tablet, watch, or phone. Preview the destination before you go there. A QR code from a reputable source is more likely to be safe. It is best to proceed cautiously if you find a QR code in an unsolicited email or on a random website. Criminals have placed stickers over legitimate QR codes in public places like bus stops. Today's destination: Belfast, Northern Ireland https://visitbelfast.com/ The best part of Belfast, in Northern Ireland, is outside the city and exploring the countryside if possible. See the Giants Causeway, a national treasure of 40,000 hexagonal basalt stone columns that are 40 feet tall along the coast. These were formed 50-60 million years ago. For perspective, there are 70 million people in the UK and 2 million people in No Ireland. The UK left the Left EU, but there is still a Land border with Ireland. The overall goal is one nation across the island. It's been mostly peaceful since the 198 Belfast Peace Agreement on Good Friday. The forecast usually calls for rain, so bring your gear. I booked a tour that included many of the Game of Thrones locations, and I have never seen the films, so I was not very impressed. However, I'm told that scenic, narrow roads and unusual serpentine beech trees made this series memorable. It's an atmospheric tree tunnel and a little bit spooky; on my tour, with Patrick as a guide, we made many stops for castles, caves from 400 million years ago, Bushmills's Whiskey factory, churches, and pubs. Castle at Carrick Fergis https://discovernorthernireland.com/things-to-do/carrickfergus-castle-p674971 I have relatives from Northern Ireland's Counties Leitrim and Louth, and my grandparents used to vacation along the Antrim coast and Glens National Landscape, a legacy of the Ice Age. I felt a tug of my ancestors here as I walked around a few graveyards in the countryside. I enjoyed Queen's University, the Botanic Gardens, the Ulster Museum, and Saturday Food and Craft Markets in the city. The Troubles Museum at Queen's University was really good. Its full name is the Museum of the Troubles and Peace. It's worth your visit, and it's free. http://museumofthetroubles.org/ You can read about the conflicts between the English and the Irish. I heard about them growing up, as my grandfather was born in Ireland. I can have dual citizenship, which is very common among the locals here. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ulster_Museum On my next trip to Belfast, I will visit the following: Titanic museum Black Taxi Cab Political Murals Tour The Crown Pub https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/northern-ireland/the-crown-bar/visiting-the-crown-bar Sandy Row: What is it? It's part of the turbulent history of Belfast. https://belfastmedia.com/the-turbulent-19th-century-history-of-belfast-s-sandy-ro Maybe by then, I will have watched Game of Thrones. https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/northern-ireland/giants-causeway If you need special accessibility help, you can find wheelchair-accessible tours in the show notes. https://www.getyourguide.com/belfast-l442/wheelchair-accessible-tc239/ What else is there in Belfast? Fairies https://www.wildernessireland.com/blog/irish-folklore-fairies/ Today's Misstep: I had a leaky water bottle in the plane's overhead compartment. Tighten the seal on the water container. Mine leaked. I was on a plane and put the container in the overhead compartment. It leaked through my water container into another passenger's luggage on the flight. Todays guest, we have Mathew Dick. Co founder and once brewer of Boundary Brewing Cooperative, based in Belfast Northern Ireland. I've known Matt a while now, and have always wanted to get him on the show. Little did I know just how fascinating and testing Matts journeys has been. Notice the cooperative part in the brewery title, something very close to the city that we reside in here in Manchester and defined as:“An association of persons united to meet their common needs and aspirations through a jointly owned and democratically controlled enterprise”What a wonderful but also incredibly challenging concept to build a brewery from. Matt was such a great guest, candid and clear in the realities of what it's taken to get to this point and the dramatic situations he's found himself in.Enjoy! Hosted on Acast. Season 5 – Gap Year: UK Episode 10 Does your past haunt you? The city of Belfast is haunted by the history of the Titanic. The giant luxury ship was built by 3,000 Harland U Wollf shipbuilders in Belfast, and set sail in April 1912. But to the world's horror, the ship spent more time under construction than at sea. Only a few days into its first voyage, the Titanic hit an iceberg, sunk and took more than,1500 lives with it. Today on the podcast, I got to talk to Dr. Alan Meenan, founder and president of The Word Is Out. He is the author of numerous articles, books and study guides. He teaches extensively throughout Asia, Africa and America. Besides being born in Belfast Northern Ireland, he has lived in Scotland and East Africa and the U.S. He has served the Church in the United States for more than 40 years, in Virginia, Texas and California – most notably as Senior Pastor of the famed Hollywood Presbyterian Church in Los Angeles. Dr. Meenan holds five academic degrees from the Queen's University of Belfast (B.A. Hons), Asbury Theological Seminary (M.Div. & Th.M.) and a Ph.D. from Edinburgh University. In today's conversation, we, of course, talk about how he came to know Jesus, his call to ministry, how he came to the Seminary, his work as a pastor, and how The Word Is Out came to be. Let's listen!
Making a Scene Brings you Gerry Casey's Interview with Dom MartinAlthough a young man new to the scene, it would be wrong to think Dom Martin hasn't paid his life and musical dues. Brought up in the often tough, but community driven streets of Belfast Northern Ireland, Dom traded his craft for a time locally without a (self confessed) clue how to break into the (international) music business and possibly with too much humility to try. 'Discovered' by his present manager, Dom has made a fairly 'meteoric' rise in terms of today's industry, with his first ever EP release attracting BBC 6 music and BBC Radio 2 support - including a converted session with Cerys Matthews and quite rightly, he now has a number of international tours and Festivals in the book for 2021/22 (Subject to Covid-19 restrictions of course). His jaw dropping, entirely natural sounding and unforced/unschooled skill on acoustic guitar, matched with an authentic 'Belfast Blues' voice, brings to mind comparisons with many from (Glasgow born) John Martyn to Rory Gallagher, with nods to many in-between not least perhaps the likes of Van Morrison and Foy Vance.
For some people, hairdressing is just a job. For others, it becomes a reflection of who they are and an avenue to channel their creativity, personality, and their passion. In other words, “It's not just a job, it's a way of life”. As a client when you meet someone who really loves their job you know that they bring something special with them. You might call it passion or pride but either way, it's a deeper level of commitment to consistently give you their best. And as a hairdresser when you meet someone like that, it reminds you why you started in the first place. My guest on this episode is many times awarded hairdresser and salon owner Paul Stafford from ‘Stafford Hair' in Belfast Northern Ireland. You will go a long way to find someone more open, honest and passionate, about his journey and the lessons he's learned along the way. In this episode we discuss: How where you grow up influences your beauty aesthetic The meaning of style Dealing with bankruptcy The importance of salons And lots more! It's been a while since Tecumseh ON Glen MacNeil has put out an album, which is why the arrival of his wonderful self-titled EP in 2020 was such a pleasant surprise. Glen is a fabulous songwriter. Indeed, his last album, 2015's "Where The Heart Remains" was included in our favourite albums of that year. Work on the new EP started during the early days of 2020 when Glen hooked up with Belfast Northern Ireland based producer Peter McVeigh - and then continued into the coronavirus lockdown. Alongside Glen MacNeil on voice and guitar, the EP also features John McCullough on keys and Dale Rivard on pedal steel and dobro. Music: Glen MacNeil "Car Window", "The Quiet" and "Just A Memory" from the "Glen MacNeil E.P." (2020, Self). Folk Roots Radio is a labour of love - a full time hobby. The murder of Ann Ogilby, also known as the "Romper Room murder", took place in Sandy Row, south Belfast, Northern Ireland on 24 July 1974. It was a punishment killing, carried out by members of the Sandy Row women's Ulster Defence Association (UDA) unit. At the time the UDA was a legal Ulster loyalist paramilitary organisation. The victim, Ann Ogilby, a Protestant single mother of four, was beaten to death by two teenaged girls after being sentenced to a "rompering" (UDA slang term for a torture session followed by a fatal beating) at a kangaroo court. Ogilby had been having an affair with a married UDA commander, William Young, who prior to his internment, had made her pregnant. His wife, Elizabeth Young, was a member of the Sandy Row women's UDA unit. Ogilby had made defamatory remarks against Elizabeth Young in public regarding food parcels. Eight weeks after Ogilby had given birth to Young's son, the women's unit decided that Ogilby would pay for both the affair and remarks with her life. The day following the kangaroo court "trial", they arranged for the kidnapping of Ogilby and her six-year-old daughter, Sharlene, outside a Social Services office by UDA man Albert "Bumper" Graham.

In this episode of The WeatherPod, we've invited Peter Lennox, formerly the CEO of the New Zealand Met Service, into the studio to discuss the operation of a national meteorological service as a commercial enterprise.Peter, from Belfast Northern Ireland, is uniquely qualified to talk on this topic. From 2011 to 2020 has was the Chief Executive of the New Zealand Meteorological Service which was established as a state-owned enterprise on 1 July 1992.This came about mainly as a result of pressures also being faced by an increasing number of national meteorological services – chiefly, the pressure to earn money on their activities rather than rely entirely on taxpayer funding. But does such a change in status from a straightforward public service to a commercial enterprise charged with earning money on its services pose any problems or contradictions? For example, is the the requirement to issue public weather warnings or to provide national security support compromised as a result? Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

20 years ago, you wouldn’t be traveling to the destination for this episode. Northern Ireland – and specifically Belfast – was ground zero for a nationalist conflict known as The Troubles, a decades-long bloody conflict between Loyalists determined to defend their British heritage, and Republicans seeking a united Ireland. But since the late 90’s, Belfast and Northern Ireland have changed, and our guest today is the perfect person to walk us through that evolving peace process. Paul ‘Donzo’ Donnelly is a history teacher by trade, but that barely scratches the surface. He’s been a mediator between Loyalist and Republican groups in Northern Ireland, working on dialogue projects between Loyalist and Republican ex-prisoners to help facilitate peace since the ceasefire. Donzo now leads Dead Centre Tours – Belfast’s #1 walking tour – taking participants first-hand through the history of The Troubles, while including the other cultural elements that make Belfast as unique as it is edgy, from sports to punk rock. I met up with Donzo at The Garrick Bar on my latest Europe trip, an old Victorian-style Irish pub near Belfast’s City Centre. Grab a pint of Guinness, and pull up a chair for this big conversation. After you listen, make sure to head over to PubcastWorldwide.com to leave a comment and sign-up for the monthly “Brewsletter.” Cheers!

A cab is the best way to tour Belfast's sectarian neighborhoods and their gripping political murals. Just west of downtown, Falls Road (Catholic) and the Shankhill Road (Protestant) are two well-known areas. And your ride can come with an education; for a reasonable hourly fee, many cabbies give visitors impromptu tours that will give you insights into the "Troubles", a conflict that is thankfully much less volatile than it has been in the past.
