From the Lawfare Archive, July 17, 2018: U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin met in Helsinki for their first one-on-one summit, where the U.S. president said that he trusted the Russian president's denial of election interference over his own intelligence community. In the United States, furor followed on both sides of the aisle. To break down what happened and what it means, Alina Polyakova sat down with Julia Ioffe, correspondent at GQ and long-time Russia observer, and Ian Bremmer, president of the Eurasia Group, to talk about why nobody else was in the room with Trump and Putin during their over-two-hour, one-on-one meeting; what Russia's kompromat on Trump really might be; and whether this summit actually moved the needle in U.S.-Russia policy. What was gained and what was lost? Was this a win for Putin? An embarrassment for Trump? See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Cohen released a tape of himself seeming to talk with then-candidate Trump about payments to a former Playboy model who alleges she had an affair with Trump. But the quality of the audio has left it's meaning up to interpretation. Plus, NPR, PBS NewsHour & Marist released a poll that shows how Americans received the president's summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Here's that interview I promised you all last week. I'm speaking with writer Branko Marcetic, who has been covering Donald Trump's trip to the NATO summit and his meeting with Vladimir Putin in Helsinki for Jacobin and In These Times. He's been doing some great work countering the overwrought conventional narratives about both events. We discuss what really happened in Brussels and Helsinki and talk about NATO's superfluous post-Cold War existence. This one is open to the public. Enjoy!Links:"The Mysteriously Vanished NATO Critique" for Jacobin"The NATO Summit Wasn’t a Victory for Trump—It Was a Victory for Militarism" for In These Times"What the Liberal Establishment Gets Wrong About the Trump-Putin Summit" also for In These TimesFollow Branko on Twitter This is a public episode. With the World Cup and Summit over, Mr. Putin must return his focus to issues at home where he is facing challenges from several fronts. Ambassador Sestanovich avoids the conspiracy theories and delves into the Putin agenda and the outlook for US / Russian relations.

Perhaps one of the most surprising parts of Monday's jaw-dropping joint press conference between United States President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin is that it compelled a Democratic and a Republican member of Congress to admit, in front of a room full of press and international lawmakers, that they actually agree with each other.

Following the Trump/Putin Summit and the President's European allies trip, there has been bipartisan outrage over Trump's friendliness towards Russia. Some have called the President's performance traitorous, disgusting, worrisome - but there's no evidence that Congress, led by Republicans, will actually do anything. And that's probably smart politics on their part. And why did 538.com's Nate Silver describe the Axios story on their own Survey Monkey poll of battleground state Senate races in 2018 this way? The Axios treatment of this poll is basically "How to repeat all the errors the media made when covering polls in 2016, in one chart". We've got a pretty good idea. Then our Director of Data Management and Technology, Stephanie Calvano, helps us understand how pollsters get their samples - and how that can dramatically impact the quality of polls. About Poll Hub Poll Hub goes behind the science to explain how polling works, what polls really show, and what the numbers really mean. Poll Hubis produced by The Marist College Institute for Public Opinion, home of America's leading independent college public opinion poll, The Marist Poll. Lee Miringoff (Director of The Marist College Institute for Public Opinion), Barbara Carvalho (Director of The Marist Poll), and Jay DeDapper (Director of Innovation at The Marist Poll) dig deep to give you a look at the inner workings of polls and what they tell us about our world, our country, and ourselves.
On this Episode of the Q, Mark welcomes back Producer Bobby along with Gary Weed and Jason Kull to do a Round Table of topics. First up, Mark has some questions regarding the Trump/Putin Summit in Helsinki and how these fine men view Trump as their President here in mid 2018. Does He fair well, or is all this fake news becoming too much to handle? Also this brings Mark to one of his newest points...Trump has hurt his brand more than help it. How will people view Trump when the presidency is over? Will he get opportunities or will he fade into the past without much fanfare? Eventually the name Maxine Waters comes up and Mark is not sure if Bobby knows who she is and or whether she has touched his life. But this should put to bed the notion that democrats tend to take advice from people like Nancy Pelosi and Maxine Waters. Finally Bobby brings around the new game called "This or That" where he grills the panel to find out a little more about the guys. Fun episode that you'll be listening to a lot!

President Trump had a headline-grabbing visit to Europe. During the trip, he called the European Union a foe of the United States and received sharp blowback for his deferential approach to contentious questions such as whether Russia interfered in the 2016 election. Over in Israel, a controversial bill that would define the character of the state passed over the objections of Israel’s president and leading Jewish organizations around the world, including AJC. Joining us to discuss the reaction to the Trump-Putin summit is Andrew Weiss, Vice President at the Carnegie Institute and long-time Russia expert, who spent years serving in administrations of both parties advising on Russia policy. We’re also joined by Dr. Stephen Bayme, AJC Director of Contemporary Jewish Life and American Jewish-Israeli relations to discuss Israel’s nation-state bill, what it means for Israel, and what it means for Israel-diaspora relations. In the latest episode of FPRI’s Back Channel, Host Ron Granieri welcomes Templeton Fellows Dominic Tierney and Nada Bakos along with special guests Trudy Rubin of the Philadelphia Inquirer and Chris Miller, Professor of Tufts University and the Director of FPRI’s Eurasia Program, to discuss the Helsinki summit and its impact on contemporary geopolitics. Continuing in the FPRI tradition of analyzing developments through the lens of history, geography, and culture, Granieri guides a conversation that views the Trump-Putin meeting within the context of President Trump’s loudly proclaimed if vaguely defined effort to reshape American relations with Russia and Europe. The meeting itself, which included a long tête-à-tête between the Presidents with no other officials present, courted controversy; the post-meeting press conference, where President Trump appeared to side with Putin against his own intelligence agencies, stoked the fires of controversy even further. How do we make sense of the meeting? What led to it? What did the principals accomplish? What comes next?

Arlene Bynon and John LeBoutillier look at the strange and odd behavior of President Trump at the Helsinki Summit - and since. What really happened in that private, two-hour meeting with Putin? Why the secrecy - even from his own staff? Were there agreements reached that we do not know of? Why is Trump now back-tracking on a daily basis? And why is there now going to be a second Trump-Putin Summit in the White House in just two months?
In the wake of the bizarre Trump-Putin Summit, intelligence expert Malcolm Nance says Trump has gone from being an unwitting asset of Russia to a willing asset deliberately undermining NATO, the European Union, and even his own country. Nance says Donald Trump has betrayed his oath to uphold the Constitution and is the closest thing America's seen to another Benedict Arnold. He reveals Russia’s broader efforts to undermine US and the influential Americans enabling Russian interference including the most powerful gun-rights organization in the country, the politician known Putin’s man in Congress, and the alt-right media baron he calls “the American Goebbles.” What’s Vladimir Putin’s end-game? Malcolm Nance says Putin's ultimate goal is to dismantle western democracy itself! Today on our weekly Sojourner Truth roundtable: The realignment of superpowers and the culture wars that were underscored and pushed forward in Trumps recent trip to Europe. From NATO to his trip to the U.K., to his secret meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, to the Trump-Putin embrace of Israels security concerns. All this in the backdrop of the Trump-initiated trade wars with traditional U.S. allies including Canada, the European Union, Mexico " as well as the big fish of China. Are his policies pushing Europe closer to Asia? What other fallout is happening? And then there is his bid to be white supremacist in chief. Not only in the U.S., but globally, from his comments about immigration being no good for the culture of Europe to his continued trashing of immigrants to the U.S. from south of the border. To the thousands of children separated at the border and not yet reunited with their families. Also, his attacks on Congresswoman Maxine Waters, the general fallout resulting from his anti-immigrant sentiment and making overt racism a badge of honor among some. We also discuss the spate of white people calling the police on Black people for no good reason except they are living while Black. All this as the white supremacist organizations that organized the Charlottesville, Virginia gathering last year prepare to hold a rally outside the White House. Our panelists are Jackie Goldberg; Chicano liberation, environmental campaigner and author Bill Gallegos and Dr. Gerald Horne.

Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump struck a little-reported deal agreeable to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The established border of the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights will be honored as Syrian forces backed by Hezbollah have as of today routed anti-Assad forces out of the area of Syria that borders Israel. That added to the boldness of the Netanyahu-led government, which has now voted in the Israeli Parliament on a law that defines Israel as the homeland of Jews with Hebrew as the official language and that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel. The law rescinded Arabic as one of Israels official language. The move was met with alarm by Israels Arab population, which says the measure is racist and sidelines them. It was also opposed by J Street, a prominent Jewish lobby in the U.S. and by the American Jewish Committee, which says the law shows that Israel is not democratic. To give us background and analysis on the Trump-Putin deal as well as the Jewish state law, we are joined by Middle East expert Phyllis Bennis. And yesterday, July 18, marked the birthday of Nelson Mandela who was born in 1918 in South Africa. It was a public holiday in South Africa and was marked by celebrations, large and small, of Mandelas life. The one most reported was the speech given by former U.S. President Barack Obama given at a stadium before thousands of people. As with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in the U.S., there is a struggle going on over the true legacy of Mandela as well as attempts to sanitize him. This week, Mike and Jay open the show with a discussion of the summit between President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki, Finland. They agree that President Trump's performance was bizarre and awful. Mike says this, combined with everything else we've seen regarding Trump and Russia, is enough to convince him that President Trump is either compromised by Russia or believes he may be compromised, which amounts to the same thing in real terms. After that, the Guys discuss new rules that would make major, industry-friendly changes to the Endangered Species Act. Mike says that he's all in favor of streamlining environmental approvals for industry, but not at the cost of endangering and destroying biodiversity. Jay has a more positive take on the proposed rules, believing they're a much-needed corrective to a policy that's unnecessarily hampered economic growth. Next is a look at the European Union's latest fine against Google for engaging in anticompetitive practices. Mike says that ensuring competitive markets is a key role of government, and that the EU is doing a better job of it then the US is doing. Jay is also all for competitive markets, but thinks that the EU's position is overreach and that consumers have more options than EU regulators seems to believe. Finally, the Guys talk about the withdrawn nomination of Ryan Bounds to serve on the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. Mike finds it disappointing that Bounds even got to this point, as both of his home-state senators returned negative ‘Blue Slips' which traditionally meant that the nomination would be quashed. He argues that the Blue Slip tradition is yet another casualty of our hyper-partisan environment. Jay is less sad to see the Blue Slip go, arguing that it's no longer serving its intended purpose, but he agrees with Mike that making judicial nominations filibuster-proof has been a step in the wrong direction. *What Mike and Jay are Reading * Why I'm No Longer a Russiagate Skeptic ( http://bit.ly/2JI7oee ) *Listener support helps make The Politics Guys possible*.
