Here at Bannockburn we are broadly served in many practical ways through the active ministry of our deacons. We understand, according to Acts 6 and First Timothy 3, that God's Word has placed a primacy upon the character of godly men who would serve in this office to unify the body of Christ and to release our pastors into greater ministry through the Word and prayer. We firmly believe that when our deacons fulfill their roles in this way, the Word of God is magnified and disciples are truly made.If you would like to connect with a deacon in your area please complete the form at bannockburnchurch.com/deacons

Many people know the Hundred Years' War, and almost everyone in the English speaking world has heard of the Battle of Agincourt, but not many would be familiar with the The Battle of Baugé which was fought on the 22nd March 1421 between the English and the Franco-Scottish forces in the territory of Baugé in France.Let's ask Callum Watson more about this conflict. Robert the Bruce may be lauded as a Scottish national hero, a noble warrior who fended off the English and claimed a spectacular victory at the battle of Bannockburn. But how to true to life is this glowing image? This year marks the 750th anniversary of Robert's birth, and Emily Briffett spoke to Fiona Watson to reveal how Robert's path to the throne was more ruthless and murky that it may initially seem. Today we bring to you our interview with Callum Watson, and we'll be discussing the Battle of Flodden Field, wherein the Scottish King James IV was massively defeated by the English army which is ironic since the King of England Henry VIII was in France fighting the French. What's even more ironic, is the fact that the Scottish King was married to Henry's sister Margaret, from whom our King Charles III is descended. Let's travel back to 1513 and and demystify this conflict, welcome back, Callum! Callum Watson is an author and historian. He works at the site of the Battle of Bannockburn, and has recently published a book on the Battle of Bannockburn with Pen & Sword. He also contributed to the Channel 5 documentary ‘Britain's Lost Battlefields', AND Callum also has worked as a historical advisor on the ‘Outlaw King' film for Netflix. Interview with Mark Selby, CEO of Canada NickelOur previous interview: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/posts/canada-nickel-tsxvcnc-secures-billion-funding-5990Recording date: 14th November 2024Canada Nickel (TSXV:CNC) is rapidly advancing the Crawford project toward becoming the Western world's largest nickel sulfide operation, with recent developments substantially de-risking both the project's funding and permitting pathway. The company has secured significant funding commitments toward the $2 billion project cost, including $500 million US from Export Development Canada (EDC) and another $500 million from a leading financial institution. Additionally, the project qualifies for approximately $600 million in Canadian government tax credits related to critical minerals and carbon capture storage.CEO Mark Selby outlines that of the total $2.5 billion funding requirement ($1.5B debt, $1B equity), the company has visibility on most of the debt package, with EDC's role as lead arranger crucial in attracting other government credit agencies and commercial banks. On the equity side, after accounting for tax credits and Samsung's $100 million commitment, the company only needs to secure approximately $300 million, with discussions ongoing with battery supply chain participants and private equity groups. The project's timeline is clearly defined, with several near-term catalysts:Environmental Impact Statement filing completion within daysFederal permitting decision expected by summer/fall 2025Construction decision targeted for fall 202530-month construction period to productionThe project economics are compelling, with an NPV of $2.5 billion US. The company expects to retain 60-70% ownership post-funding, representing significant potential value for shareholders. Recent exploration success has enhanced the project's potential, with high-grade discoveries at Bannockburn showing 4% nickel over 4 meters and 12 meters of 1.6%.The macro environment strongly supports the project's development. Critical minerals security has become a national security priority for both the US and Europe, with strong bipartisan support in the US regardless of administration changes. As Selby notes, "Critical minerals are really a national security issue for both the US and Europe. Those of us who are going to be inside the fence are going to benefit from whatever tariffs end up being placed on Chinese production."Beyond Crawford, the company controls multiple regional targets, with several showing potential to exceed Crawford's scale. An initial resource for the Reid property, which may be larger than Crawford, is expected before year-end. The company is also developing downstream processing opportunities, recently strengthened by key appointments including Julian Ovens, former Chief of Staff to senior ministers and executive at BHP and Rio Tinto. For investors, Canada Nickel offers exposure to World's largest western nickel sulfide project, strong government support and funding commitments, clear timeline to construction decision, multiple near-term catalysts, regional exploration upside, and strategic positioning in critical minerals space. With major milestones approaching and significant funding secured, Canada Nickel appears well-positioned to advance Crawford toward production while maintaining majority ownership for shareholders.View Canada Nickel's company profile: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/companies/canada-nickelSign up for Crux Investor: https://cruxinvestor.com

I recently had the pleasure of parking up in the Cabana at Black Barn in Hawkes Bay and riffing on wine life with wine writer Elaine Chukan Brown. I say wine writer but actually they are much more than simply that. Elaine's wine journey started in earnest in 2011 but it's the life they had in the lead up to then that brings a richness and depth and, at times great humour, to this chat. Originally from Alaska, Elaine now calls Sonoma, California home and to spice things up they rocked up to our get together with a bottle of wine from Washington state. That threw me - especially as it was a Sauvignon Blanc blend. You could call that a ballsie move to sit down with a kiwi and pour them a glass of that stuff but what it actually was, was an incredible portal that saw us transcend into chatting about prohibition, the great depression, world war II and the effects it had on the American wine trade as well as Elaine's time spent training camels. You heard that right but here's the thing. The training camels came after a stint as a Tarot card reader for a Dial-a-Psychic gig which came after a decade of fishing for salmon. Not serious enough for ya? I'm deadly serious when I say this one is a cracker folks. After all those various vocations, Elaine has ended up dedicating their time to being a global wine educator, a wine mentor, a wine lover but mostly an absolute advocate for the people behind the bottle. The list of credentials Elaine has earned when it comes to wine is far reaching and includes publishing a wine book, The Wines Of California, assisting with the publication of the 4th and 5th editions of the Oxford Companion to Wine along with freelance writing for all the top wine mags. Perhaps most importantly, they co-founded the Diversity in Wine Leadership Forum, and has advised diversity initiatives in multiple countries around the world. They were in Aotearoa for the 2024 Chardonnay Symposium - a two day exploration of everything Chardonnay held in Heretaunga, Hastings by Hawkes Bay Wine. The key theme for the conference was to discuss a 'sense of place' and Elaine was asked to offer their take on it all, from Canterbury to California or Bannockburn to Burgundy. With deep roots to their own place and an academic background in Philosophy (that came after all the camels), they were one of the very best wine people to help define what a sense of place even means. So, shuffle your tarot cards, pour something that makes you think hard and get the cold smoked salmon plated up. Robert the Bruce is best remembered as a rebel king, and for good reason. He was an unrelenting thorn in the side of any English monarch with ambitions to subdue Scotland. His heroics at the decisive Battle of Bannockburn helped to finally free his country from English occupation. But under the surface, this legendary rebel was also an opportunist, quite willing to switch allegiances and kill rival Scots to achieve his own goals. For the latest instalment of Dan's Kings & Queens series, we're joined by Michael Penman, author of 'Robert the Bruce: King of the Scots'. He takes us through the life of this intriguing and complex character, from his early life to the legendary Battle of Bannockburn, and explains why Robert's rule marked a turning point in Scottish history.Produced by James Hickmann and edited by Dougal Patmore.Enjoy unlimited access to award-winning original documentaries that are released weekly and AD-FREE podcasts. When evil stalks the land, who can you trust? Autumn 1314. In the aftermath of the Scottish victory at the Battle of Bannockburn, the villagers of Warcop wait desperately for the return of loved ones. When brothers Wat and Rob Dickinson bring news of the death of their companion, Adam Fothergill, as they fled home, there is no one to mourn him. But when a monstrous figure is seen in the hills nearby, it seems Adam has returned from the dead to wreak revenge. But for what? Three miles away, young Fran Hilton is mourning the death of his father and wrestling with the responsibilities of becoming lord of the manor. When he catches sight of the Revenant, he is terrified, but the mystery of Adam's death fascinates him. With a motley band of Hilton's young people, Fran sets out to confront Adam. As terror turns to murder, Fran realises the truth has been buried deep within a pack of lies – and he, too, harbours a secret of his own, the revelation of which could mean losing everything and everyone he loves most. Lies of the Flesh (Polygon, 2024) by FJ Watson is a gripping exploration of what happens when identities – gender, social position or nationality – are challenged within the crucible of war. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose new book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. In this episode I speak with Chris Hose from Chartwell Nurseries, a wholesale nursery based just outside of Geelong in Bannockburn.I absolutely loved chatting with Chris, not only because he's a plant nerd, but also because he's one of the nicest people in the industry. He's got a great story about his early life in the industry where he was working at a nursery while still at school, but decided to do extra plant study so that he'd have answers to questions when people asked him.Chris was one of the major supporters for our 2023 MIFGS garden and it was exciting to hear that he's teaming up with another designer for next year, and he spoke about how beneficial it is having this much notice, so he can grow things on and have options. You can follow Chris on Instagram @chartwell_nurseriesIf you're wanting to sign up to be on the mailing list for The Landscaping School, you can find the link here. You can follow along with the projects we're currently working on via our Instagram page@instyle_gardens@thelandscapingpodcastYou can view each episode on our YouTube channel

In this episode, filmed mainly on location in Bannockburn, we draw from three different accounts of the Bruce's most famous battle and attempt to pinpoint the most likely sites of the different phases of the battle. We also examine the military and strategic genius of a man whose plans for every eventuality were so thorough they even included his own escape from Hell! We also reveal secrets hidden in the last verse of Burn's famous poem Scots Wha Hae. This is the second in our trilogy of episodes regarding the great battle of Bannockburn, which happened in June 1314, when the might of England could not defeat the Scottish rebels. This is one of the most famous battles in Scottish history. In our previous episode we spoke of the leaders of the opposing armies - Robert the Bruce and Edward II. You may also remember these kings from the 2018 Netflix film ‘Outlaw King'. Fun fact, both are direct ancestors of Mary Queen of Scots. In this episode we'll talk of the battle itself. All the fighting. In the melée of it.How many horses were there? Was it easy to kill someone in medieval armour? What were the conditions like underfoot? Now, let's hear our interview with Callum Watson, author and historian, who actually works at the site of the Battle of Bannockburn and who recently published a book on the topic with Pen & Sword. He also contributed to the Channel 5 documentary ‘Britain's Lost Battlefields', where he spoke all things Bannockburn; AND Callum also has worked as a historical advisor on the ‘Outlaw King' film for Netflix. Today we celebrate the recent anniversary of the Battle of Bannockburn, which happened on the 23d-24th of June 1314, when the might of England's army could not crush the Scottish rebels. Thus Scotland won, under the command of Robert the Bruce, and Edward II of England suffered a major defeat. This is one of the most famous battles in Scottish history.(As a side note, both Robert the Bruce and Edward II are direct ancestors of Mary, Queen of Scots... but that's beside the point.)You may remember Robert the Bruce and Edward II from the 2018 Netflix film ‘Outlaw/ King'. As we enter the last week of the General election campaign trail, Marlene and Fiona chat to Indy supporters at the Bannockburn rally - and find a mixed set of views! We also consider what the turnout might be and whether people are sufficiently disenchanted with the election campaign that they will abstain, or spoil their ballots and what practical effect this has. We spill the beans on the cost of that GB Energy logo! We had a good chat with Bill Bonnar, the Scottish Socialist Party candidate standing in Rutherglen and asked just why smaller parties stand in first past the post elections they have no hope of winning. In June of 1314, Scottish forces under the command of Robert the Bruce squared off against an English army led by King Edward II. The battle was the culmination of years of English intervention in Scotland after a succession crisis. Despite being vastly outnumbered, the Scots won the day, earned their independence, and firmly established Robert the Bruce as king of Scotland. In the second part of a two-episode biography of Robert the Bruce's life, Jackie returns to the studio with Professor Dauvit Broun of the University of Glasgow. Last week, we looked at the early life of Robert and how his canny abilities, not to mention his tendency to switch allegiance at opportune moments, helped him to secure power. But what came next? Picking up their conversation in 1306, when Scotland has been conquered by Edward I of England and Robert faces a tussle for power with the most powerful family in Scotland, Jackie and Dauvit will look at all that happened in Robert's reign. To find out more about visiting Bannockburn, click here.
Welcome to a new series of Love Scotland. In this week's episode, Jackie is joined by Professor Dauvit Broun of the University of Glasgow to discuss the life of Robert the Bruce. Robert, King of Scots from 1306-1329, led a fascinating life full of changing allegiances, shifting power and military victories. How much of our common understanding of this Scottish ruler is based in fact? What motivated him to switch sides, on several occasions, in the wars of the 13th and 14th centuries? And why has his legacy had such a lasting effect on the nation's history? Next week, Jackie and Dauvit continue their conversation, charting the events that followed Bannockburn. For most wine drinkers, Sauvignon Blanc is THE white wine of New Zealand. We're here to debunk yet another myth and challenge you to think about NZ Chardonnay! From the focus of organic / biodynamic / regenerative farming to low intervention winemaking, winemakers let the chameleon varietal shine. The land, the climate, even within the same vineyard is creating amazingly different expressions of Chardonnay and we're super excited to share them with you!We explore Chardonnay from Central Otago to Auckland through interviews with wineries and wine makers - this is a must listen episode for sure!Felton Road Wines, Bannockburn, Central Otago, South IslandWinemaker Blair Walter deep dives the distinct soil types even within same vineyard giving unique expression to their Chardonnay. Passion for land as evidenced in their biodynamic farming practice leaves the true impression of care for NZ's land, - the soil just feels and smells different as if it's a living breathing organism.Te Whare Ra, Marlborough, Northern part of South IslandWinemaker Anna Flowerday who partners (with her husband, Jason, tends some of the oldest vineyards in the region with some dainge back 20+ years or more. Episode geeklist Come join the new Wargames To Go (and Boardgames To Go) discord server https://discord.gg/vxEG9bMPdx Guess what? This little podcast is now ten years old. I'd been doing my other one about euro boardgames even longer, and in 2013 I decided to branch off this other show about wargaming. I'd started in this hobby as a kid wargamer in 1979. I never completely left it, but my hobby in the 1980s, 90s, and early 2000s shifted more to roleplaying, Magic: the Gathering, and then euro boardgaming. It wasn't until around 2010 or so that I finally realized what countless wargamers before me did--that I could enjoy wargaming as a (mostly) solitaire hobby, getting more games to the table. I started acquiring more titles, especially magazine games, and became interested in specific topics to explore via multiple game treatments. Then I added my love of travel and movies to make my own contribution to wargame podcasts, Wargames To Go. Thanks for listening! I had plans to go see Scotland back in 2016, but those had to be cancelled. Then it was put off for a few years, a worldwide pandemic happened, yadda-yadda-yadda...and finally I got to visit this country in 2023. My wife & I enjoyed two weeks there--the first in the cities of Ediburgh & Glasgow, followed by a second week in the countryside (Strathspey and up to Orkneys). There was much to see & enjoy, from stone age settlements to whisky distilleries. And there were sites of military history. I really enjoy visiting battlefields to get a feel for the location. Sometimes the accompanying museums are good--other times not. Best of all is when there is a good guide available. Even if not, though, these days it's easy to read so much information online, to watch battlefield animation videos, and more to get a fuller sense of the historic event. On this trip we visited the sites of Bannockburn, Culloden, and from Stirling Castle I could look out over the Stirling Bridge area. I don't think anyone really knows where the Roman battle of Mons Graupius took place, but I probably drove near it. As you can tell, the topics here are not limited to one battle, one war, or even one era. I decided to dabble in all areas of Scottish military history that I could, at least as far as wars actually in Scotland. The big three eras are Roman contact, the Wars of Scottish Independence (Wallace/Bruce/Longshanks), and the Jacobite Uprising. Other periods such as the Battle of Flodden Field or the Border Reiver period are mentioned, but we'll see if I get to any of those games. This episode is a intentionally shorter than some previous ones. I'd rather post a couple smaller episodes that wait longer for a gargantuan one. I figure it's easier for listeners to follow along this way, too. As a result, I haven't yet seen all of the films nor played all of the games that I intend to. It's an introduction to the topic, and I'll return later with a conclusion. Films • Braveheart • Culloden • Rob Roy • Outlaw King Books • A Great and Terrible King: Edward I and the Forging of Britain, by Marc Morris -Mark P.S. I'll be at SDHistCon in just a few days. Look me up and say hi if you enjoy the podcast, thanks!
Hey everyone, it's me! Today, I have something special in store for you. Before it officially launches, I'm giving my loyal "A Medic's Mind" listeners an exclusive first listen to the inaugural episode of my new podcast, "Poutine & Poltergeists". In this episode, I delve deep into the waters of Canadian history to bring you the chilling and true tale of the SS Bannockburn, a ship that vanished without a trace and left behind whispers of ghostly sightings and marine mysteries. It's a blend of historical fact, eerie legend, and a touch of my own narrative flair. So, dim the lights, cozy up, and journey with me into the foggy abyss of Lake Superior. Let's uncover the enigma of the "Flying Dutchman of the Great Lakes" together. And after, I'd love to hear your thoughts. For the last episode in this mini-series, I take a look at a few more clans and their claim to have fought at Bannockburn. Did these clans even exist at the time? Episode geeklist Come join the new Wargames To Go (and Boardgames To Go) discord server https://discord.gg/vxEG9bMPdx Times are approximate Introduction (0:30) Operation Market Garden overview (12:00) Nils Johansson transcribed/read interview (16:30) David Thompson & Michael Tiller interview (37:00) Mark's travels, movies, books, games about Market Garden (1:29:00) I'd been saving the famous battles of Operation Market Garden for when I expected to live nearby in the Netherlands. When those plans fell through, I was disappointed for some time, but eventually put that behind me and looked at the stack of Market Garden games I'd been saving. Then I lucked into a business trip into that corner of the world, and I determined to visit Hell's Highway and cover this topic. That was last December. I played a few games back then, and a few more over the subsequent months. Plus, of course, the usual books & movies. All to be discussed in this episode. Michael Tiller (mtiller) Patron Badge for 2010, 2013 through 2016, 2018 through 2022 Nils Johansson (zweigefuhle) Patron Badge for 2010 through 2018, 2020 through 2022 David Thompson (Skirmish_Tactics) Patron Badge for 2012 through 2013, 2015 through 2022 However, something surprising happened when I was just starting this effort. Designers Nils Johansson and David Thompson publicly released a postcard game about Market Garden. Now, I say I'm interested in smaller wargames (it's in my podcast intro), but postcard games are REALLY small. I was interested in this new entry as a game, but I was especially interested in it for what it says about Minimalist Wargame Design. Not only in component count and number of rules, but with Nils' as a co-designer it would have a fascinating graphic design behind it. That absolutely interested me. Then add in the fact that the two of them utilized Michael Tiller as a volunteer helper to do some mathematical modeling (coding) of the simulation...it all added up to a fascinating glimpse into wargame design in the fullest sense, even though it was about a minimalist wargame. Oh, and it just happened to be about Market Garden! Take a look at the graphic wargame designs of Nils Johansson Even better on his Instagram page In the episode after my general intro, I launch into interviews of these creators. Nils contributed a written response, which I decided to simply read aloud on the podcast. Then I get David & Michael on the microphone to talk through their points of view about the design & development. Films • A Bridge too Far • Band of Brothers (episode 4, "Replacements") • Theirs Is The Glory • The Forgotten Battle Books • Arnhem: The Battle for the Bridges, 1944, by Antony Beevor • Brotherhood of the Flying Coffin: The Glider Pilots of World War II, by Scott McGaugh • Strategy & Tactics no. 77, "Paratroop" -Mark P.S. I haven't been very reliable or accurate in my plans for upcoming episodes, but this time I think I'm pretty certain. I've got my first ever vacation to Scotland coming up, so I'd like to explore a few games featuring that famous country. Think Hammer of the Scots, Bannockburn, Culloden...
This episode is part 2 of 3 as I go over additional claims of clans that claim to have fought at Bannockburn. Were they even in existence long enough for this claim to be true? Part 3 will be delayed as the next episode I publish will be my interview with Professor Ali Cathcart who teaches at the University of Stirling. I hope you enjoy this episode, which is also available on Apple Podcasts. Many clans claim to have fought at the Battle of Bannockburn on 23-24 June, 1314. This battle happened at an interesting time for the clans as we would recognize them. Some of them had taken shape by this point and some hadn't. My goal here is not to proclaim whether they were definitively there or not. Rather, I look at scholarly sources and the accounts as given by the clans themselves or their origins to see whether they were even developed as clans by the this decisive battle or not. I sampled 15 clans. Did yours make the list? Were they even there? 1314 - After the death of King Edward I of England, the Hammer of the Scots, the self proclaimed Scottish king, Robert the Bruce started a campaign of seizing Scottish castles garrisoned by the English. When Stirling Castle was about to fall to the Scots, King Edward II of England had no choice but to act.
