Erik Kramer shot himself, and survived. Then, he nearly lost his life again. Our longtime members at Go Long will recall our three-parter on the former NFL quarterback. It didn't have a conclusion then. The woman who coerced him into a sham marriage and then robbed him of tens of thousands of dollars had not been punished yet.Kramer finally received a slice of justice last week, but that's just what it was: a slice, in the form of four felonies.Kramer also knows there are many more Cortney Bairds out there. Here on the podcast, he returns to explain. We're joined by his close friend Anna Dergan, who helped piece his life back together.Audio of this conversation is above, video is below and you can access everywhere you pod.All three parts from that 2021 series are right here, icymi: * The Fight for Erik Kramer's Life, Part I: A miracle* The Fight for Erik Kramer's Life, Part II: Victimized* The Fight for Erik Kramer's Life, Part III: A new manKramer also joined the show last season to discuss his book, “The Ultimate Comeback.” (Q&A version)Thanks, all.Go Long is your home for longform journalism in pro football.Similar conversations with former players at Go Long:* Dallas Clark on mowing Kinnick, holes in socks, Tight End U, Taylor/Kelce, the 'walk-on mentality'* A Super Bowl Conversation with Brett Favre* Mike Daniels and the psychology of the Green Bay Packers* Ryan Leaf wants to save NFL players' lives: 'You're not alone'* What is the future of football? This life story is almost too outrageous to believe. I first connected with Erik Kramer ahead of our launch of Go Long in 2020. He was eager to share everything that's happened in his life since football. It's unfathomable. He lost his son to a heroin overdose. He lost both of his parents. He attempted to take his own life, even pulling the trigger inside of a hotel room. Miraculously, Kramer survived. Major surgery was a success, but it took Kramer's brain a full five years to wake up. While it was impossible for outsiders to tell, he had the mental capacity of a 6-year-old. And that's when he nearly lost himself again. Kramer was coerced into a sham marriage and says he lost about $700,000.The former NFL quarterback detailed it all in our three-part series, The Fight For Erik Kramer's Life. (Then again on a Happy Hour with subscribers.)Now, you can learn about Kramer's entire life from Kramer himself. His autobiography — “The Ultimate Comeback” — has officially hit the shelves. You can purchase a copy on Amazon and everywhere books are sold. It's fantastic. It's the definition of a page-turner in this genre. So, for our next 1-on-1 podcast here at Go Long, we welcome back Kramer. His rise as a quarterback in this sport is wild itself. Kramer didn't even start in high school… was a backup in need of an epiphany at the JUCO level… shined at N.C. State… got his shot as a “scab” during the NFL strike… bartended with a side of football in the CFL… and finally got his shot with the Detroit Lions after calling every team's main-line phone number in a media guide. Here's the audio and video of conversation on the podcast. I'll post the text later today.Go Long is your home for longform journalism in pro football. Thank you for joining our community. In this week's episode, we talk with former NFL running back, Rashad Jennings. We get into his experience as an athlete and his evolution from hs to college and ultimately professional football and the driving force behind his rise as a Running back. After his career in the NFL, Rashad won Dancing with the Stars in 2017. We get into how that came to fruition and what his main goal was in pursuing this opportunity. Rashad is someone who has always prioritized health and fitness as an athlete, we discuss how he still maintains this focus in his current day to day life. Rashad Jennings is an eight-year NFL veteran who competed for the Jacksonville Jaguars, Oakland Raiders and New York Giants. After competing in football, he went on to star in--and win--Dancing With the Stars. He has since become an author, with his first book--The If In Life: How to Get Off Life's Sidelines and Become Your Best Self--becoming a New York Times bestseller. In this episode, we explore how Rashad has found success in multiple arenas—and how he continues challenging himself to do so in new areas. Rashad talks to us about one of the central aspects to his ability to accomplish great things: preparation. His level of preparation isn't basic—it is preparation at all costs and no matter what the outcome. We hear how despite receiving no playing time as a high school football player, Rashad stayed prepared, allowing him later to surprise critics and make the NFL. Rashad has great advice for how to stay positive and motivated when opportunities you seek—and believe you deserve—aren't being delivered. He talks about the importance of believing in yourself the most and how to find joy in seasons that aren't fruitful. Through this, Rashad discusses the criticalness of falling in love with the process of what you're doing—rather than being guided foremost by the outcome. He highlights how this mindset helped him not only to appear on Dancing with the Stars, but to win the entire competition. Rashad is a man of faith and he discusses the role prayer has played in his life. He speaks to finding motivation in proving critics wrong and the need to self-advocate. Rashad is truly more than an athlete. This conversation will inspire you to believe anything is possible for your life and to get to work pursuing what captivates you.
