On their Penn State football podcast, host Adam Bittner and Post-Gazette/Daily Collegian Nittany Lions insider Joel Haas react to a busy week of personnel moves following the College Football Playoff loss to Notre Dame at the Orange Bowl. Will coach James Franklin miss Tom Allen as DC after his move to join Dabo Swinney at Clemson? Or are Anthony Poindexter, Dan Connor, Al Golden and D'Anton Lynn attractive possible alternatives? What about Harrison "Trey" Wallace and Omari Evans at receiver? Will their transfer portal departures hurt? Or could they be addition by subtraction after their no-show efforts in Miami? And can transfers Kyron Hudson from USC and Devonte Ross from Troy step into those roles capably? Our duo tackles those questions, then ponders NFL draft decisions. Does Penn State have the depth to stay elite despite the loss of names like Tyler Warren, Abdul Carter and Kobe King? To what degree can names like Dani Dennis-Sutton and Luke Reynolds step up behind them? And how encouraging are the returns of Dennis-Sutton, Drew Allar, Nick Singleton, Kaytron Allen and Zane Durant for Penn State's NIL program?

The Cleveland Browns need help everywhere so even if the 2025 NFL Draft doesn't offer the quarterback class the Browns were hoping for they can still get a roster upgrade at a lot of positions. Abdul Carter would be a guy who can immediately get this defense back to it's 2023 form. Kyle McCord may not be everyone's favorite but he really had a great year at Syracuse. You can subscribe right now for just one dollar and get the next seven days of access to try us out. Penn State dominates the trenches but gives up big playsPenn State's offense got the ball rolling early by generating chunk plays on the ground. The team had 194 yards of offense in the first half and 141 of those came on the ground. The Lions put together two long scoring drives to control the flow. However, the star of the game in the trenches was injured star Abdul Carter. The pass rusher lined up opposite of his normal position to play with his good shoulder to the inside of the line. He tallied a sack and two TFLs in the first half. But it wasn't enough. The Penn State offense went silent in the third quarter, with just 25 total yards to Notre Dame's 128. Notre Dame took the lead in the early fourth quarter with a Jerimiyah Love scoring from inside the five yard line. Penn State bounced back with a scoring drive of its own, but the Irish continued to churn yards on the ground and mix in passes from quarterback Riley Leonard. Despite two interceptions, Leonard threw a touchdown over Cam Miller, who fell over in coverage, allowing a late fourth-quarter score and a field goal drive to lose the game after the Penn State offense went three and out with four minutes left. Postgame contentAfter the show, stay put for Penn State head coach James Franklin's postgame press conference. The Nittany Lions leader will address the media following the loss. We'll also have a report from field level from Nate Bauer, Sean Fitz and Greg Pickel, who are at the game. Griffin Warner and Big East Ben talk CFB Playoff betting. The guys break down both semifinal games for this episode and provide best bets. The "Need for Screens College Football Podcast" analyzes the upcoming College Football Playoff semi-finals, focusing on Notre Dame vs. Penn State and Ohio State vs. Texas. Hosted by Griffin Warner and "Big East Ben," the episode mixes humor with statistical breakdowns and betting advice. Key Points & Analysis: Notre Dame vs. Penn State: Notre Dame enters as a 1-point favorite but remains untested this season. Their key concern is the availability of Jeremiah Love, a pivotal offensive player who has been essential in critical moments. Penn State's defense, led by Abdul Carter (11 sacks, 40 solo tackles), is a standout. Carter's game-time status could significantly impact Penn State's ability to control Notre Dame's rushing attack. Prediction: A low-scoring game due to both teams' defensive strength. The under 45-point total is strongly recommended. Ohio State vs. Texas: Ohio State, favored by 5.5 points, dominated Oregon in the quarterfinals, with wide receiver Jeremiah Smith excelling. However, concerns about quarterback Will Howard's composure under pressure linger. Texas has underperformed throughout the season but still boasts a powerful defensive line. Their resilience could help them keep the game close. Prediction: Texas is expected to cover the spread. A close game, potentially decided by a field goal, is anticipated. Player Highlights: Jeremiah Love (Notre Dame): A dynamic playmaker whose presence could shape the game. Abdul Carter (Penn State): A defensive powerhouse with 11 sacks, potentially crucial for limiting Notre Dame's offense. Jeremiah Smith (Ohio State): An offensive standout pivotal in the quarterfinals. Bo Scadabow (Arizona): Praised for creative plays, reflecting the innovative strategies seen in the playoffs. Team Insights: Notre Dame has relied on defensive turnovers and Ryan Leonard's rushing ability but faces questions about their overall depth and quality of opponents faced. Penn State's disciplined defense neutralized Boise State effectively and ranks among the nation's top five in points allowed. Ohio State's offensive explosiveness contrasts with moments of inconsistency, especially against top-tier defenses. Texas struggles with consistency but retains the physicality to compete in high-stakes games. The episode provides sharp predictions and actionable betting insights, recommending Notre Dame vs. Penn State under 45 points and Texas to cover against Ohio State. With an engaging mix of humor and analysis, it delivers a comprehensive preview of the semi-final matchups. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

On their weekly Penn State football podcast, host Adam Bittner and Post-Gazette/Daily Collegian Nittany Lions insider Joel Haas preview the College Football Playoff semifinal matchup against Notre Dame at the Orange Bowl. Does James Franklin need a win to shed his label of struggling to win big games for good? Or has he done enough with wins against SMU in the first round and Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl? And how important is it for Penn State as a program to beat a Fighting Irish program that's similarly fallen just short of joining the nation's elite programs? In terms of the matchup itself, does Penn State have the edge in star power with Drew Allar, Kaytron Allen, Nick Singleton, Abdul Carter and Tyler Warren? How many players should O Andy Kotelnicki and DC Tom Allen fear beyond Jeremiyah Love and Xavier Watts, with Rylie Mills out because of injury? What's the injury situation for Carter? Does Allar or Riley Leonard have more to prove in the QB matchup? And which opponent should Penn State prefer to see come out of the Cotton Bowl? A red-hot Ohio State team that they know? Or a talented Texas Longhorns team that they don't?

Kaytron breaks tackles. He runs people over. He's a physical, physical back. Nick, obviously, if you give him a crease, he has got a chance to go 80 at any minute. So, they're really good complementary backs. They've been playing together for a long time. When we're able to get the outside zone going like we were able to do today, kind of opens everything else up and gets people running sideline to sideline, which creates creases," Franklin said. We'll discuss the outcome of Penn State's win, and what happened on offense to slow down the team's hot start. Defense dominates Next, we'll discuss the team's defensive performance which kept superstar running back Ashton Jeanty. We'll discuss the ways that Penn State went about putting an emphasis on stopping Jenaty and how effective it was. We'll also discuss what the team gave up to do so. Quarterback Maddux Madsen threw for over 300 yards in the game and kept the Boise State offense churning plays and drives. Mixed into all of that is the injury to Abdul Carter. How did that affect the game plan, and what will happen next for the Nittany Lions? The Lions did what most thought was impossible and kept Ashton Jeanty contained for the entirety of the Fiesta Bowl. The superstar tailback managed only 96 yards on 24 carries before Penn State put the game out of reach in the fourth quarter. The team did it without star linebacker Abdul Carter, who went down with a shoulder injury in the first quarter and did not return. Overall, the team racked up eight tackles for loss to keep Jeanty contained before he got going.Offensively, Penn State used another strong game from Kaytron Allen and Nick Singleton to power the win. Allen was his typical gritty self, grinding out 15 carries for 131 yards. Singleton contributed a 58-yard touchdown to seal the game.  More Postgame ContentRing in the new year with Blue White Illustrated! On their weekly Penn State football podcast, host Adam Bittner and Post-Gazette/Daily Collegian Nittany Lions insider Joel Haas preview the Fiesta Bowl against Boise State with a trip to the Orange Bowl and College Football Playoff semifinals on the line. Will Ashton Jeanty and the Broncos provide a tougher test than SMU did in Round 1? Or will Penn State's talent advantage yield a similar result? How much will the neutral site factor into the game after the Beaver Stadium crowd was a major factor against the Mustangs? And who will have the biggest performance if Penn State wins? Drew Allar? Nick Singleton? Kaytron Allen? Abdul Carter? Tyler Warren? Or someone else, like Dominic DeLuca, who had a pair of interceptions against SMU? Later our duo ponders the goings on in the rest of the playoff bracket and Penn State world. Should Penn State prefer to face Georgia or Notre Dame in the next round? Should it hope Oregon or Ohio State advances out of the Rose Bowl? Will Troy transfer Devonte Ross provide a boost to the receiving corps in 2025? And what's next for the women's volleyball program after Katie Schumacher-Cawley and Jess Mruzik led it to an eighth national title last weekend?

It was a day for the defense as Dominic DeLuca had two interceptions, including a pick six, and Tony Rojas had one that went for another pick six as the Nittany Lions stifled the SMU offense to earn a place in the College Football Playoff quarterfinals. Abdul Carter threw in numerous pressures and a sack as well as Dani Dennis-Sutton who helped terrorize Kevin Jennings in a huge win for James Franklin. Penn State's offense struggled early but took over on the ground as Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen both averaged nearly seven yards per carry. Drew Allar could not find his receivers but made plays with his legs to help the cause as the Nittany Lions had a comfortable lead at the half.
