A hometown favorite - Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats - do so much more than create incredible music. They also launched The Marigold Project to support historic institutions, brilliant ideas and driven individuals and just recently created “Ground Cover” -- a community conversation series at the lived-in and timeless Skylark Lounge (which was purchased by Rateliff in 2020). This series creates dialogue around the importance of community and subverting the systems that don't serve us. Listen to this episode of Good & Grounded to hear more about how one of our local heroes is giving back to the community and how you can get in on the conversation.

Nathaniel Rateliff took the world by storm with his hit song, “S.O.B.” and is now a household name. Before he was selling out multiple nights at Red Rocks Amphitheater, he was a janitor, trucker, and landscaper. When he put all his chips on the table to pursue music, it clearly paid off. Lance and Nathaniel sat down at the Skylark Lounge in Denver, which Rateliff co-owns, to have a down-to-earth conversation about how he got here.

Hi Folks!  For this months bonus episode we listen to the song "S.O.B.".  Released in 2015 on their self titled debut album, "Nathanial Rateliff & the Night Sweats", "S.O.B." is a song that at its core is about drinking one's life away after a break up. Rateliff has also described "S.O.B." as a joke song and said he initially did not intend to record it but after positive audience reception decided too.  "S.O.B." blends vintage R&B with new soul to create a wonderfully vintage sound.  This song will will get your feet tapping and have you singing the chorus out load!  It captures a feeling we can all relate too (even if our best interest is to not to act on it) "Son of a bitch! Give me a drink!".  Thanks for listening!Intro/Outro:Upbeat Forever by Kevin MacLeodLink: https://incompetech.filmmusic.io/song/5011-upbeat-foreverLicense: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/

Nathaniel Rateliff rings up Kyle Meredith to discuss his latest album, And It’s Still Alright, which finds the “S.O.B.” artist returning to his singer-songwriter roots. Rateliff details how much of the writing came after the latest Night Sweats LP where he could look at his recent divorce with the clarity of a little more time. It was around then that his friend and longtime producer Richard Swift passed away, which gave the resulting songs even more weight. Still, Rateliff says that the main attraction of the new record is hope and dissects how to find the light in songs draped in darkness. On the much lighter side of life, we also hear about him teaming up with WIllie Nelson on their own cannabis line, as well as what opening for The Rolling Stones is like.
