This week on the show, something different: an extra-sized Transmission that's been locked in the vault for years, a two-hour talk with singer/songwriter Damien Jurado. Way back in 2022, host Jason P. Woodbury sat down with Jurado in the recording studio at Gold-Diggers in Los Angeles for a career spanning conversation, exploring the stories behind his oracular visions, his history, and his collaborators, including the late Richard Swift. The idea was that perhaps the talk would be chopped up for a mini-series, but the project never materialized—and instead this revealing talk was locked away on a hard drive, that is until now, as the time has come to share it via Transmissions. Woodbury been listening to Jurado's music for about 25 years; first encountering his 2000 Sub Pop release Ghost of David, a haunted album of lo-fi folk songs. Years later, Jurado's sound bloomed into psychedelia when he began collaborating with the late Richard Swift for 2010's Saint Bartlett, which was followed by the Maraqopa Trilogy, a series of psychedelic epics. Jurado has been on a tear since—sharing a string of self-produced recordings that include 2021's The Monster Who Hated Pennsylvania, 2022's Reggae Film Star, and three albums in 2023, Sometimes You Hurt the Ones You Hate, Motorcycle Madness, and Passing The Giraffes. Recently, he's expanded the view of these albums with a series of demo collections shared also by his own label, Maraqopa Records. Jurado's songs are worlds meant to be lived in, full of strange characters in dream states, caught between the static on flickering TV channels, and with this episode, the penultimate, which is a fancy word for “second to last” of our 10th season, we explore those worlds with the man himself. Welcome back to Transmissions, your weekly conversational series from Aquarium Drunkard in partnership with the Talkhouse Podcast Network. This week on the show, a long awaited return visit from Lonnie Holley. The Atlanta artist joins us alongside his manager, Matt Arnett, son of William Arnett, the Southern art curator and collector who brought Holley to the attention of the art world in the 1980s. In those days, Holley often worked directly with trash—taking discarded materials to forge his sculptures. Philip K. Dick has said “the symbols of the divine show up in our world initially at the trash stratum,” and in Lonnie's case, that truth is made evident. His art draws from what's thrown out—a theme he returns to often—but also from personal tragedy: first artistic project was carving headstones for his sister's two children, who died in a house fire in Alabama in 1979. Since then, his found-object assemblages, paintings, and collages have endeared him to the fine art world—they have even been displayed in the Smithsonian and the White House—in part due to the patronage and care of Arnett's father. But the younger Arnett helped Holley get on the path he walks know, as an oracular sculpture of sound. Lonnie and Matt join us ahead of the March 21st release of Holley's new album, Tonky. Crafted with Irish producer Jacknife Lee (R.E.M., U2, The Killers) and featuring guests like Isaac Brock of Modest Mouse, harpist Mary Lattimore, rappers Billy Woods and Open Mike Eagle, spoken word from Saul Williams, and others, Tonky rattles with blues-punk-industrial art folk anthems. We discussed the new album, Holley's poetic metaphysics, and his work with kindred spirit Richard Swift. Ryan Miller is here this week, and we had a fun, sometimes goofy, yet deep and reflective conversation — all the things one might come to expect from the Guster frontman. A veteran of 30+ years at the helm, and with a new Guster album, Ooh La La — arguably their best work to date — Ryan has an exciting outlook for his own creative future and that of the band. A uniquely talented and affable human with a terrific sense of humor, Ryan simply has a generous spirit and caring soul, and that 100% comes through in this super fun interview.Little did I know that Ryan is the ultimate Roadcase guest, full of fun quips — both self-deprecating and directed happily at me — and we totally vibe out on all things, and I'm here for that!! This is the Built In Sun appreciation episode. Released on August 7, 2015 via PIAPTK Records, Built In Sun is Joe Plummer's first and currently only solo record. BIS began as an instrumental idea, with inspirations landing somewhere between John Cale's Fear, the punker vibrations of The Wipers, guitarist John Reis and Joe's favorite soundtrackists, John Brion and Clint Mansell. Recorded both at his studio in Seattle and with the late Richard Swift at National Freedom, Joe made a point to collaborate with his friends and former bandmates. The lyrics and vocals on the record are provided by longtime friend and former The Black Heart Procession colleague, Pall Jenkins, with additional players David Bazan and Cody Votolato filling out the piano and guitar respectively. In this episode, Joe expresses his love for the opportunity to make a record with his pals and leaves an easter egg or two. This week on the show: a conversation with Laetitia Sadier. As the main vocalist of Stereolab, her spacey voice shines as the human core in that project's motorik and dense avant-pop, a blend of electronic music, krautrock, space age lounge sounds, and much more. Outside of that legendary band, Sadier has been an active force on her own. She's appeared in a variety of contexts on albums by Common, Tyler the Creator, Atlas Sound, and Deerhoof. In 1996, she formed Monade, a solo vehicle, and in 2010, she released her debut under her own name, The Trip, on Drag City. Her latest is called Rooting for Love and it's out now. Joined by members of the Laetitia Sadier Source Ensemble and a multiple voice choir, these minimalist tapestries, Brazilian glide, and propulsive ambient funk yearn for a kind of gnosis—sacred knowing. We don't often make a habit of quoting directly from album descriptions, but we can't resist sharing this bit: On Rooting for Love, “Laetitia issues a call to the traumatized civilizations of Earth: we're urged to finally evolve past our countless millennia of suffering and alienation.” Sadier joins host Jason P. Woodbury to discuss, among other things, discussion about taking care of our collective body; the planet itself, the radical potentiality of “love,” what it felt like to reunite Stereolab in 2019, her engagement with hip-hop, and reflections on working with The Trip producer Richard Swift. How many times throughout your life have you been presented with the question “Would you”? For most of us, it is probably at least a few times if not more. This type of question can come up during conversations with any number of friends, family, strangers, listeners to the Hamlin Avenue Boyz Podcast, and life directions covering a whole host of subjects and situations. Well, as is sometimes the case, Da Boyz loves to entertain hypotheticals in conversation just about more than anything else. The reason? They just love (or would prefer) putting themselves in awkward situations in the laboratory (aka the studio) versus real life. I mean who wouldn't? It's just safer. One particularly late night of recording produced one of those golden moments that you can hear on tracks 6 and 7 of their latest episode, which was prompted by a communication from a ‘listener'. Thank you James from Davenport, IA. So to everybody and anybody listening ‘out there' - What would you do? Would you? As always - Da Boyz is grateful to you for pointing your ears in the direction of Hamlin Avenue now and then and for all your communications to the show. And we do mean ‘all'. We encourage you (if the feeling arises) to send the Boyz your comments, questions, or hypotheticals. Veteran acoustic-indie hump Damien Jurado was looking to get adventurous when he linked up with gifted producer and multi-instrumentalist Richard Swift in 2010. Over an eight-year stretch, the pair would create some of the most musically-enriched LPs in Jurado's catalog. One random weekend after the release of the first of those albums, the pair hung out and spontaneously recorded nine cover songs in Swift's dining room. Never originally thought to be album-worthy, a few years later this collection would be formally released as Other People's Songs Volume One - a half hour of huggable audio that thrives in the freedom of having no intent.

Detroit based multi Grammy nominated and two time Grammy winning mixer, producer, musician, and engineer Collin Dupuis has developed a sought after sound over the last fifteen years working with critically acclaimed artists and projects including Yves Tumor, Angel Olsen, Lana Del Rey, St. Vincent, Dr. John, The Black Keys, Ray LaMontange, Richard Swift, and many others. Beginning his career playing in bands, running a DIY recording studio in Michigan, and doing tech work around the Detroit area, he quickly found himself working at FBT (The Bass Brothers) studio as an assistant engineer. Working there, he cut his teeth working with artists and producers of the likes of Mr. Porter, Eminem, Pharoahe Monch, and many more. Working at FBT studios along with working in the tech shop at Vintage King Audio helped to develop a deep understanding of studio work both technically and sonically. This knowledge helped him make connections and bridge the gap into the rock and electronic worlds of the Detroit music scene. He soon got a call to set up a studio at Jack White's house and help out on the White Stripes' “Get Behind Me Satan.” Shortly after that, Collin was hired at Carl Craig's Planet-E records. He engineered for the next five years alongside Carl on remixes, production, live sound in Europe, mastering, and mixing. Collin next got the call from Dan Auerbach to help him get his Akron studio up and running. This led to a move to Nashville and many critically acclaimed albums working as the lead engineer at Auerbach's Easy Eye Sound. During his time at Easy Eye Sound he earned a Grammy win for engineering and mixing Dr. John's “Locked Down”. Along with a Grammy win for engineering Cage The Elephants “Tell Me I Pretty”. Currently, Collin is busy working and living in Detroit, MI. as a freelance musician, mixer and engineer, producing, recording, and mixing albums for artists including Yves Tumor, Angel Olsen, Lawrence Rothman, Special Interest, Boy and Bear, and many others. Along with playing in and co-creating with his band Zoos of Berlin. IN THIS EPISODE, YOU'LL LEARN ABOUT: Saying “yes” to every opportunity Being an entrepreneur vs. following a traditional engineer/assistant path Setting goals for your career Knowing when you are a good fit for a client The hierarchy of what matters during tracking Focusing on the feelings of the musicians vs. the sound of the record Getting the most out of untreated studio spaces Committing ideas for the sake of preserving your intentions Embracing bleed in your recordings How to fix bleed in your mixes Dialling in reverbs right from the beginning of a session How to eliminate “s” sounds from taking over your reverbs Notable gear mentioned in this episode: Audient EVO SP8: https://sweetwater.sjv.io/Or5L9Q SE Microphones: https://sweetwater.sjv.io/DK1Mbj To learn more about Collin Dupuis, visit: https://www.collindupuis.com/ For tips on how to improve your mixes, visit https://masteryourmix.com/ Looking for 1-on-1 feedback and training to help you create pro-quality mixes? As broadcast October 13, 2023 with plenty of conflicting vibes in tow. Today is obviously Friday the 13th, a bad luck day in most peoples' minds, but Danno grew up in a household where his mother, born on Friday January 13, 1956, always considered it a lucky day. So, as dedication to Danno's fierce protector and the lover of vintage and scary movies in his life, we had a bit of a bifurcated playlist tonight, with parts 1 & 2 all witches, and stepping on cracks while we finished with a 2nd hour of good luck, positive vibes, and just general sunlight to also help all of you get over it if today freaks you out a bit.#feelthegravityFriday the 13th XLIVOct 13, 2023Tracklist (st:rt)Part 1 (00:00)Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes – Bad LuckKelly Finnigan – TroubleAaron Frazer – Bad NewsThe Supremes – Bad Weather (Reflex Revision)Steely Dan – Deacon Blues Part 2 (32:49)Adekunle Gold – SinnerSerebii ft Skud Gambosi – Don't You Feel LuckyArjuna Oakes & Serebii - SatellitesGenevieve York feat Teo Oliveras – Better at Bad ThingsMargot Guryan – I'd Like To See The Bad Guys WinHana Eid – WeirdDehd – LuckyNilufer Yanya – Same Damn LuckDehd - Desire Part 3 (60:36)Aretha Franklin – Dr. Feelgood (Live in The Netherlands, 1968)Etta James – At LastClassics IV – SpookyOsole – Good DayLEISURE – All The Good Times Never DieThe Mighty Bop – Feelin' Good!Beyond Luck – Nature's Meditation feat Keter Darker Part 4 (91:16)Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings – He Said I Can (Live at The Apollo)Emma Donovan & The Putbacks – My GoodnessRichard Swift – Lady LuckBlondage – Lucky Black SkirtJungle – Can't Stop The StarsUniversal Togetherness Band – Lucky Stars
Indie rock outfit Beau Jennings & The Tigers present their new single 'People in This Town', out June 9 via Oklahoma-based record label Black Mesa Records. What starts as a scrappy ten seconds of scuffling and static emerges as a summer anthem from this Oklahoma band. With their classic 80's AM radio American rock n' roll sound filtered through their collective influences (gospel, country, folk, and indie rock), the single follows 2022's full-length album 'Heavy Light', which drew critical parallels to Tom Petty, The Wallflowers and Bruce Springsteen, and subsequent singles 'I've Got Your Heart Right Here' and 'Midnight Service'. Jennings' recording has just reached the two decade mark, in that time having collaborated with the likes of Sufjan Stevens, Richard Swift and filmmaker Bradley Beesley (Fearless Freaks, Okie Noodling) and shared the stage with Dwight Yoakam, Robert Cray, Heartless Bastards, Ray Wylie Hubbard and John Moreland. In this new single, Jennings imagines the patrons of a bar on the outskirts—inspired by a real blink-and-you'll-miss-it building in his hometown of Norman, Oklahoma. Having barely noticed it for much of his life, a recent drive nearby prompted Jennings to conjure the figures who might be congregating there. “'People In This Town' is really just about the overlooked or hidden aspects of a small town that are often taken for granted. Norman, OK is governed by religion, sports, and partying and while that maybe isn't that different from other places, those are still powerful forces that shape people's lives,” says Beau Jennings. #Music #Interviews #SocialMedia #Beau #America #Artists #BruceSpringsteen

Today we're joined by Jeff Cloud of Velvet Blue Music, known for his work with Pony Express, Joy Electric, and California dream pop band Starflyer 59. Cloud founded Velvet Blue in 1996, and the label has been home to pivotal releases by people like Richard Swift, with whom Cloud played in Pony Express and Starflyer 59, the Broadway Hush, an early project headed by Michael Nau and Whitney McGraw of Cotton Jones, Fine China, and many more. Totally blue collar in spirit and independent, the label continues to release new music from groups like the synth pop outfit Golf Slang, as well as Ronnie Martin of Joy Electric and Jason Martin's Starflyer 59 gem, Vanity. We're happy to have him on Transmissions to discuss it all—meeting the Martin brothers, Velvet Blue, David Lynch, and much more. You can support this podcast by checking out our Patreon page. Swift, with the help of the legendary Frank Lenz, set out to capture Josh's musical magic in their small Huntington beach apartment studio in 2003. Ultimately, the talent combination of Lenz, Swift and Dooley couldn't have been better expressed than in the 2004 VBM release, “Secrets by the highway”. We're honored to promote this particular record and so For now, sit back, relax and enjoy another one-on-one with Joey and Josh Dooley, as they chat about one of his most popular records. Welcome to Transmissions. Today on the show: Chris Swanson, co-founder of Secretly Group. This year marks 25 years of two of the flagship labels in the group, Secretly Canadian and Jagjaguwar, and to celebrate they've got tons going on—including SC25 Editions, which features titles by Damien Jurado, Anohni, Richard Swift, and more, as well as Merch, with net proceeds benefiting Bloomington's New Hope For Families. Also of note: Jagjaguwar's Join the Ritual, a Dungeons and Dragons-inspired release featuring Angel Olsen, Bruce Hornsby, Cut Worms, Jamila Woods, and many more. As a young person exploring record stores, Secretly and Jagjaguwar served as hallmarks of quality—it was a great time getting to settle in with Swanson to discuss the labels' roots, artists like Anohni, Richard Swift, Jason Molina, Bon Iver, and more.
Black Keys frontman Dan Auerbach joined Laura Duncan in the summer of 2015 while Black Keys were on hiatus to talk about his side project “The Arcs” ahead of their only full-length release “Yours, Dreamily.” Laura asked about the difference between producing for his own projects versus other artists, and was surprised by an impromptu second interview with fellow collaborator and bandmate, the late Richard Swift.

As broadcast July 30, 2021 with extra hot sauce for you podcast tasters. Tonight we started the show wishing former First Choice member Joyce Jones a happy 72nd birthday, and then we began the warm-up for our guest artist selector for this week in Alanna Royale. The Nashville-based artist just released "Fall In Love Again" via Colemine Records, and we talked with Alanna about working with producer Kelly Finnigan along with riffing on some of her favorite artists & friends featured on the playlist. I was honored to talk to Boone this morning over coffee. We got in contact with each other on Instagram. I was informed that he had his debut album coming out, which is now released. We chatted about the nerves associated with live performances and both of our craft. He's very interesting and skilled. And to be honest I can add another album to the list of albums that I can put on and listen in it's entirety. This bio I'm posting is right from his website https://www.boonestthomas.com/about "Boone St. Thomas has always been about the music. Working for over 10 years as a producer, composer, writer and band musician sharing bills with acts from Richard Swift to Duran Duran, he has added artistry to stories and sounds of all kinds. But with tides changing around the world, he has found he has something to say. “I've always loved the inspiration that comes from composing for a film, or writing and recording with another singer. But these times have challenged all of us, and I was compelled to write something personal and honest about getting through those challenges.” When The Sun Came Up is an album about hope through hard times. It's about change; wanted or unwanted. It's about empathy and hearing each other. It's about people coming together and standing for what is right. “I got inspiration from listening to others and hearing what they were dealing with this year. I often went out surfing or hiking in the quiet dawn hours to reflect. Those moments helped me process things and became a catalyst for the songs. The sun always comes up. It's the record that I needed to hear right now. Someone else might need to hear it, too.” When The Sun Came Up is Boone's debut release as a solo artist." My personal favorite track from his new album "When The Sun Came Up" is True Blue. Thank you for being a great guest and giving me the opportunity to work on my own set of skills. Thank you. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/backstagepass2021/message

Although being a self-proclaimed introvert this interview with American singer-songwriter Damien Jurado was one of those conversations that felt very natural from the beginning. We spoke about his upcoming record What's New Tomboy, how he writes his songs, his friendship with producer Richard Swift who sadly recently passed away, and a memory of Bo Diddley's Oh Yeah, among other things. Nathaniel Rateliff is a singer and songwriter from Colorado. He’s released four solo albums, and two with his band, the Night Sweats. Those two Night Sweats albums were produced by Richard Swift, who passed away in 2018. In a statement, his family said that he "suffered from alcohol addiction, and it’s ultimately what took his life." Nathaniel Rateliff’s new solo album, And It’s Still Alright, was supposed to be produced by Richard Swift as well, but Richard died before they could work together again. In this episode, Nathaniel breaks down the title track, which was inspired by his own complicated relationship with alcohol, and by his friendship with Richard Swift. songexploder.net/nathaniel-rateliff

es un álbum bonito, pausado, con un punto triste y marcado por la espléndida voz de este aullador domado, que vuelve a sus inicios.un tributo a su amigo fallecido Richard Swift
Nathaniel Rateliff rings up Kyle Meredith to discuss his latest album, And It’s Still Alright, which finds the “S.O.B.” artist returning to his singer-songwriter roots. Rateliff details how much of the writing came after the latest Night Sweats LP where he could look at his recent divorce with the clarity of a little more time. It was around then that his friend and longtime producer Richard Swift passed away, which gave the resulting songs even more weight. Still, Rateliff says that the main attraction of the new record is hope and dissects how to find the light in songs draped in darkness. On the much lighter side of life, we also hear about him teaming up with WIllie Nelson on their own cannabis line, as well as what opening for The Rolling Stones is like. American singer-songwriter Laura Bird is a shape-shifter who can't sit still. Since 2010 she's worked under the moniker The Mynabirds, releasing four critically acclaimed and stylistically different albums on Saddle Creek: What We Lose in the Fire We Gain in the Flood (2010) and GENERALS (2012), both produced by Richard Swift, Lovers Know (2015), and BE HERE NOW (2017). She has also toured as a member of the Postal Service (2013) and Bright Eyes (2011), helped found Omaha Girls Rock (a non-profit helping young girls find their voices), and in 2013 gave a TED talk based on her "New Revolutionists" portrait project, exploring what it means to be a revolutionary woman in this day and age. Before The Mynabirds, Laura was a member of DC indie band Georgie James with Q And Not U's John Davis, and also put out two self-produced solo albums on the label she founded herself, Laboratory Records. The Mynabirds' newest album, BE HERE NOW, is a collection of 9 songs written and recorded in just 2 weeks in January 2017 following the Inauguration and the Women's March. Singer Laura Burhenn worked with producer Patrick Damphier in his Nashville studio (which he was being evicted as the neighborhood began to gentrify, old warehouses turning to tech offices and luxury condos) to document the news and peoples’ intense emotional responses to it all in real time. No stranger to politics in her songwriting, Laura aimed to speak from the voice of the collective consciousness in a work of "Emotional Journalism," singing the heartbreak, anger, exhaustion and resolute hope she witnessed during the Muslim travel ban, the final stand at Standing Rock, and every other news story that rattled America in that period. The album vacillates in style and feel to reflect a frayed nation, featuring the legendary McCrary Sisters on title track “Be Here Now,” a Burundian refugee choir on a song for immigrants, and a cacophony of dissonant saxophones in a new national anthem on another. It is the last recording made in that space. http://www.themynabirds.com eastforest.org/podcast

Episode 56: Erick Cole - Grammy Winning ArtistErick Cole is a professional musician, songwriter, and artist originally from Nashville. Upon graduation from Belmont University, in typical tight-knit Nashville fashion, the debut CD of Erick’s band other ended up in the ears of Christian music powerhouse dc Talk. One thing lead to another, and Erick began co-writing and recording with vocalist Kevin Max. Soon after, he toured the U.S. on dc Talk’s Solo Tour. That partnership lead to a Grammy win with their song “Be” which was on the Rock Gospel Album of the Year, ‘Solo EP’ by dc talk.Erick spent the next years touring the world with Kevin Max, as well as writing and playing on six of his solo projects. Through that relationship, he also had the opportunity to work with the renowned guitarist Adrian Belew (Frank Zappa, David Bowie, Paul Simon), co- writing and earning the title “multi-instrumentalist’ by playing the unusual instruments balalaika and theremin on Belew’s Side Two record. He toured for three and half years with artist and producer Richard Swift (also of The Shins/Black Keys/Arcs), worked on a film score at Skywalker Ranch (for the independent film Dear Mr. Cash, nominated for best score at the Nashville Film Festival), continued to play shows with Kevin Max, and toured with Brenton Brown, all while having an artistic collaboration with musician Travis Taylor in a small studio near Santa Monica, CA.Besides recording sessions for other artists, Erick also co-produced five ep’s for artist and professional skateboarder Josh Harmony, and he enjoyed a role for a few years as Music Director of Calvary Church in Pacific Palisades, California. He adds, “I enjoy everything I do, whether it’s touring, songwriting, recording. I like them all. Music can be a business like anything else, but the ability to diversify keeps it fresh.”After recently relocating back to Nashville, he has been busy songwriting, recording in his home studio, and touring; including just finishing a national tour with artist Matthew Perryman Jones. He’s quick to add that, for him, “There’s a simple joy that’s derived equally from playing guitars at home, in the studio, or in front of an audience.”
This Friday on Kyle Meredith With..., Kyle Meredith interviews David Bazan of Pedro the Lion, who explains why he resurrected the name “Pedro the Lion” and what led to his new project, a concept series of five albums focused on different cities he has lived in throughout his life. He shares childhood stories that led to a song called “Black Canyon” and left him with a strange and haunting impression of Phoenix, Arizona. Bazan also discusses Fug Yep, a project that brings awareness to mental health and addiction, inspired by his relationship with the late Richard Swift. Humid funk out there, but we’re keeping cool. You are tuned into the July edition of the Aquarium Drunkard transmissions podcast, our monthly series of features interviews, and audio esoterica. On this episode, Justin Gage sits down with crate digger and producer Yosuke Kitazawa, to discuss Light in the Attic Records’ Japan Archival reissue series, which kicked off last year with the essential rock/folk/and pop compilation Even a Tree Can Shed Tears, picks up next month with a grip of Haruomi Honsono reissues, and will eventually feature Japanese new age, AOR, ambient, and electronic music. Then, we crack the spine on author Jason Heller’s new book, Strange Stars: David Bowie, Pop Music, and the Decade Sci-Fi Exploded. Focusing on the 1970s, Heller explores the myriad ways science fiction influenced music across genre lines, from the rock of Bowie to the cosmic jazz of Sun Ra, and examines the changing ways we continue to conceive ideas about “the future.” But first, Gage and co-host Jason P. Woodbury sit down to reflect on the passing of Richard Swift. A prolific producer and sideman—known for his work with Damien Jurado, the Shins, the Black Keys/Dan Auerbach, Laetitia Sadier, Foxygen, David Bazan, the Pretenders, Starflyer 59, Kevin Morby, and countless more—Swift also proved himself one of the most idiosyncratic voices in indie rock on his own solo LPs. Recorded at the beginning of the month, just after the news had broken, the talk focuses on his legacy, history, of course, his songs. Last year, Los Angeles-based label Light in the Attic issued the first installment in its sprawling Japan Archive series, Even a Tree Can Shed Tears: Japanese Folk & Rock 1969-1973. “In compiling these artists, the compilation shares the output of a national scene and time, as well as the struggles and triumphs of a generation that forged its own identity and opened their collective minds, and culture, to new forms of expression,” wrote our own Ben Kramer, reviewing the set. The compilation signaled the start of an ambitious project spanning the music of Japan, featuring everything from Japanese rock & roll to new age. For this episode of the podcast, Justin sat down with producer Yosuke Kitazawa to discuss what’s to come. Early in July, word broke that Richard Swift had passed. A beloved musician and artist, Swift’s history with Aquarium Drunkard is extensive. In addition to posting his collection of covers with Damien Jurado, Other People’s Songs, here on the site, Swift was responsible for one of our all-time favorite mixes, Playing Dumb, sourced from 45s at his National Freedom studios. Swift was an American original, and we’re deeply saddened by his loss. On the off-chance you’re unfamiliar, we put together a playlist featuring some of our favorite cuts from his solo work, Richard Swift: Try To Write a Book Each Time I Speak. In addition to this talk, it’s our tribute to Swift. Godspeed, Dickie. Author Jason Heller exists with one foot in science fiction, one in the world of music. In his new book, Strange Stars: David Bowie, Pop Music, and the Decade Sci-Fi Exploded, he unites them. Focusing on the 1970s and featuring a wide cast of characters including David Bowie, Samuel Delany, Sun Ra, George Clinton, Hawkwind, Michael Moorcock, Michael Jackson, and dozens and dozens more, the book posits that science fiction helped give musicians a framework for some of their most forward ideas. The stars looked very different, and the continue to shine in fascinating ways. If you enjoyed our show, please feel free rate and review on Apple Podcasts. Even better? Welcome to the fifth episode of AD's re-booted Transmissions podcast, our recurring series of in-depth conversations and unexpected sounds. As we did with our last episode, we're halving the show today, speaking with two disparate artists. Up first, we sat down with singer/songwriter Damien Jurado. Starting off in the Seattle hardcore scene, Jurado evolved with moody albums like Rehearsals for Departure and Ghost of David, full of stark and heartbreaking vignettes. At the start of the current decade, however, Jurado took a turn, teaming with producer Richard Swift to create more vivid, psychedelic templates for his music, which turned toward the paranormal and spiritual. We spoke with Jurado about their latest collaboration, Visions of Us on the Land. We then spoke catch up with a true legend, famed soul man William Bell, author of essential songs like "Born Under a Bad Sign" and "You Don't Miss Your Water (Until Your Well Runs Dry)." His latest, This Is Where I Live, finds him once again on Stax, the legendary label he helped established, and finds his voice and lyrics in fine shape. Alright, let's get into this...
The Arcs is a new project from Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys. He started the band with some of the musicians and producers he's worked with over the years. For this episode, Dan and his bandmates Richard Swift and Leon Michels break down how they made the song Put a Flower in Your Pocket, and how its title was inspired by a three-year-old girl. Damien Jurado's solo album St. Bartlett was produced by Richard Swift, himself a successful independent singer-songwriter. The duo spent a few days together at the end of August and banged out another record of cover songs, written by acts as diverse as John Denver and Kraftwerk, and they make them completely their own. Confused? We unravel it all.
Richard Swift's latest record is called The Atlantic Ocean. That's about what separates our opinions of it.

It actually may be too early to tell, but are you getting the vibe that Congress is going to betray you -- again? The Congress -- both the House and the Senate -- are seen as honest and trustworthy by an astonishingly low 14-and-16%, respectively, by most Americans according to a recent poll. The converse of this, of course, is that 84-86% of most Americans don't trust their Congress. A term like that just ended at least partially explains that gap; for Congress routinely sells its collective soul to the lobbyists and corporate powers-that-be. Only these wealthy forces could explain the actions and inactions of Congress in its most recent term; complete servility to the military-industrial-complex; the bankruptcy bill; their unbridled hostility to a minimum wage -- you name it. If you could afford their services -- cool; if you were a regular Joe (or Joanna), working-class, or -- heavens forfend! -- poor -- forget it. The Congress, in violation of the Constitution, ceded its power to the President, and the executive has made a complete mess of every power it was granted. The mid-term elections, thought by many to have been a partial remedy of this disaster, was predicated upon the wide public will to get out of Iraq. The new congress was not yet in their seats, and already there are whispers in the air of sending more troops to Iraq! The march towards betrayal of the public will may have already begun. As journalist Richard Swift explained in his book, The No-Nonsense Guide to Democracy (Toronto, Ontario: New Internationalist Publ, Ltd./Between the Lines, 2002), today's political parties strive to actually be less and less representative: "Such parties run the ideological spectrum from Right to Left (although here differences between them are certainly narrowing). ... Such parties have loose ideological commitments and use a vaguely populist rhetoric (often of the Left) while campaigning. They typically contain a number of powerful factions and interest groups each of which stakes a claim on policy and economic awards once the party is in power ... "Under most present circumstances these 'representatives' are only answerable to us in a very general sense. Once they have been elected any number of factors may weigh more heavily for them than the wishes of their constituents; their own views, Party discipline, personal ambition or the influence of powerful lobbies. Voters by-and-large do not get to hold them accountable until the next general election. In the meantime they form a virtual dictatorship -- particularly if they are part of a majority government." [pp. 102-3] For millions of people, especially those who voted for Democrats, there is the expectation that this new class (or new majority) would headline an Iraq withdrawal. Now, it looks less so. As the new congressional majority forms, lobbyists are bellying up to the bar to make new and lucrative deals -- and with money comes influence. Americans may learn that, in politics, faces may change, and parties may swap -- but the same game goes on. Copyright 2006 Mumia Abu-Jamal
