We made it to FOUR HUNDRED episodes. Whew. This week marks the 400th episode of Beer Guys Radio. Crazy. We've been pretty steady with the show since we launched in January 2016, and here it is 2024. Thanks for joining us for the ride.We open up with a little WTF action as Truly launched a Hot Wing Sauce Hard Seltzer "just in time" for the Super Bowl. Maybe it would pair well with our cellared Hormel Chili Cheese Beer?Just like everything else the average price for a case of craft beer is up, and I learned there are several categories of craft beer at retail, all the way up to Apex Craft.Bids are in for Anchor Brewing and it's expected a winner will be announced soon. The Anchor Union is still in the mix but no word on where they stand in the race.We share some thoughts on Dry January and hop water, now that it's all behind us, and thoughts on what breweries can do to keep people coming in during those challenging months. We definitely support giving your body a break, but we sure don't want to hurt our favorite bars and breweries. In related news, NA beer is the NA beverage of choice (next to NA wine and spirits) for Dry January. We take a little side venture into hot sauce chat, and about if listening to a book counts as reading a book.More closures. So many more closures. Buffalo Bayou Brewing got locked out of their building for non payment of rent. The CEO says he's trying to come back. We ponder the likelihood of that happening. You gotta have a bold strategy to pull off a Lazarus move.AB InBev continues to close down craft breweries it acquired. But it's keeping some of the brands alive at its other breweries. Let's see what they have left when it's all said and done. Finally, a shout out to our friends Jason and Leslie from Orpheus Brewing. They're having a going away party this weekend ahead of a move to Amsterdam where they'll start up a much smaller brewing operation, The Hollows. We wish them luck!Beers of the WeekScofflaw Juice Quest (Hazy IPA)Three Taverns Decatur 200 (Cold Pale Ale)Dogfish Head / Rodenbach - Crimson Cru (Red Ale, blend of Rodenbach Grand Cru and “an off-centered red ale” infused w/sumac & sweet orange peel.)Bearded Iris Pep Talk (Lager)Thanks for listening to Beer Guys Radio!
This time it's a little ol' Nhick and Dan joined by guest mw brooke (who we call Michelle, spoiling her disguise). We talk James Salter's 1979 novel, Solo Faces, and the individual's pursuit to the self and the eternal...yeah, it was that kind of cast. We seque right into Sparklehorse's 2001 album, It's a Wonderful Life. The whole album is briiliant and we discuss colloboration and if an artist really only has 1 great or defining work in them. We wash it all done with different sours: Nhick and Dan on the Rodenbach Grand Cru, mw on Ecliptic Peach Sour (some fancy shit micro from Portland). We hope you dig this one as much as we did talking about art and booze.
Sour beers are a divisive group of brews. You got your old school took-a-long-time-to-master sours like lambics n such, and you have the new school pack-as-much-fruit-as-possible-until-you-cant-taste-beer sours. Here, we finish the discussion about what sour beers are, the different kinds of sours, and how they're made. We invite Don back as a guest host, and our special guest, one-half of Beware The Vine (our theme song writers), Aimee Klein is here to hang out and possibly sing us some telegrams? In this episode we sample and review Stacked Deck Brewing's Astronaut Sauce with mango, guava, and pineapple, Oliphant Brewing's Squall Me Squishmael banana and almond sour, Junkyard Brewing's Nuance Strikes Back pink pepper and lemon zest saison sour and Muir Dry Hopped Foudre Sour along with their Bohemian Flex guava peach and tangerine gose, Rodenbach Grand Cru, and the ever present Duchesse De Bourgogne from Brouwerij Verhaeghe. Listen at the end of this episode for the full version of Sex, Drugs, and Cabaret by Beware The Vine. Located in the West Flanders city of Roeselare, Rodenbach has been making dark ales for 200 years in a brewery that inspires the reverence of an old church. The brewery’s history, their process, and the beer’s quality make Grand Cru one of the most important beers in Belgium.
In this episode we review the BIB from Old Bardstown from the Willet's distillery in Kentucky and a Flanders Red Ale from Rodenbach. Rodenbach is a brewery in Roeselare, Belgium. We also chat about a special evening we had over zoom with co-workers from Keller Williams real estate company and also bad news for the restaurant industry, again.
Overall strategies for the great powers. Trade routs and oil
In deze aflevering proeven we de Crand Cru van brouwerij Rodenbach.
If you've been following us over the years, you'll know that one great beer region we haven't dabbled in to date is Europe. But for this episode, Europe came to us. Founded in 1821, you can't get much more OG than Belgium's Rodenbach, and their Master Brewer Rudi Ghequire was in Quebec to celebrate the launch of three of their beers into our market. We were lucky enough to not only sit at his table at a Brew Master's Brunch in downtown Montreal, but we also were honoured to sit down with Rudi at Station Ho.st for a full length, in-depth podcast with one of the greatest beer minds in Europe. Enjoy! Beers Reviewed: Rodenbach Classic; Rodenbach Grand Cru; Rodenbach Vintage 2016 (Foeder No. 201). Happy Monday, everyone! This week, Ryan and Alex are trying Rodenbach Grand Cru by Brouwerij Rodenbach. In 1821, the four Rodenbach brothers (Pedro, Alexander, Ferdinand and Constantijn) invested in a small brewery in Roeselare, in the West Flanders province of Belgium. The brothers agreed to a partnership for fifteen years. At the end of this period, Pedro and his wife, Regina Wauters, bought the brewery from the others and Regina ran the business while Pedro served in the military. Their son Edward later took over the brewery (1864), and it was during his directorship that the brewery saw great growth. Edward's son, Eugene, took over in 1878 and, in preparation for this position, travelled to England where he learned how to ripen beer in oak barrels and then mix old and young beers. It was this that became the method of producing beer that Rodenbach became famous for. As Eugene produced no male offspring, a public limited liability corporation was created and most shares remained in the hands of descendants of the Rodenbachs until 1998 when the brewery was sold to Palm Brewery. Matured in oak foeders, Rodenbach Grand Cru is complex with a fruity, tart taste. This week on FDB - we learn of one man’s technique in stealing a chainsaw, fan over the smallest Battle of the Bands winner, discuss how badly we’d really want the internet, and more! Now please kick back, and enjoy another sit down with Friends Drink Beer. Panel Introductions A finalist in the 2013 Wine Blog Awards, a certified California Sustainable Winegrowing Ambassador, and the founder of the stay rad wine blog, …. John is drinking Rodenbach Grand Cru and Boxing Bear Black and Blue Sour My name is Jeff Eckles, I’m a certified specialist of wine and your host for these festivities, and Jeff is drinking Petrus Oud Bruin and Crooked Stave Petite Sour Tart Cherry Sours John - History/origin, discussion, etc. Q & A Listener Email - Sour beer update from Doley in FL: tried St. Louis fond tradition--That's probably what the goats drank that made them angry. Not a fan. Founders Rubaeus--that one was pretty good. Nice tart raspberry taste, good price. I'll get more of that. Best so far: St. Louis framboise lambic. Great tart/ sweet berry taste. Really liked that stuff. Only downsides are $7.99 a bottle and the fact that it's only 2.8% abv; is it really beer? I'd drink that stuff by the gallon if it was less expensive. On another note-- the superhero stuff on the last episode: Roundtree/Shaft? Gimme a break. Dolemite would kick the balls off that sissy.
