Send us a textAfter trading allocated bottles from historic brands, and a question every bourbon fan wrestles with: when does hype outpace the pour? We put E.H. Taylor Bottled-in-Bond from the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection on the table after swapping out a Pappy 10 (Old Rip) and some cash to find out if the first-ever 100-proof BTAC earns its secondary price—or simply its place in history. We set the scene with why “first and only” matters here: not a one-time release, but the only bottled-in-bond in BTAC's lineage. Then we walk through the proofing journey, from 140 proof off the still, to 125 proof into barrel, to a composed 100 in glass, along with how water choice, temperature, and integration shape the final profile. With a massive 62 percent angel's share over 15 years and 4 months, the bourbon promises concentration, yet it prioritizes balance over brute force. On the nose, we pick up apple, maple sweetness, vanilla, caramel, and oak. The palate drifts from a quick black licorice flash to soft fruits and an elegant finish of brown sugar, cinnamon, and light pepper. The surprise is the mouthfeel—clean and approachable rather than the heavy oil and intensity BTAC fans expect from Stagg or WLW.That contrast leads to the big debate: is elegance at 100 proof a feature or a flaw in a lineup famed for high-octane hitters? This is excellent at MSRP and a meaningful step up from standard E.H. Taylor bottled-in-bond, but a tough sell at eight times retail on the secondary market. If you love the Taylor profile and want a milestone bottle, it's a smart pick near retail. If you're chasing BTAC thunder, look toward Stagg or WLW. For those building value-forward shelves, we also highlight standouts like Elijah Craig Barrel Proof, Bardstown Bourbon Company releases, Ezra 7, New Riff single barrels, and reliable daily sippers when you can find them.Pour one, press play, and tell us where you land on rarity vs. flavor. If you enjoyed this breakdown, follow, share the show with a friend who loves bourbon hunts, and leave a review—your feedback helps more whiskey lovers find us.
This week on the Bourbon Bytes Podcast, we're getting into the Bardstown Bourbon Company rebrand that has the whiskey internet fully divided — and I'm using it as a jumping-off point to talk bottle redesigns across the industry. Then it's time for a Byte-Sized Review of Bardstown Bourbon Company Bottled-in-Bond (6-year wheated bourbon, 100 proof) — and… yeah, it surprised me in the best way.
Support us at https://buymeacoffee.com/whiskeytangent After chasing but never tasting any version of the nearly impossible-to-find Old Fitzgerald decanter series bonded Bourbon, we'd just about given up ever being able to acquire any. But then Heaven Hill decided to create a new, reasonably priced Old Fitz expression that's basically the same juice, just with a lower age statement. So, of course we jumped at the chance to buy it and try it. But will it exceed our expectations? Or will we never want to drink any of their bottles again? Press play to find out! On this episode, Brian brought us an Old Fitzgerald set and Old Grand Dad Bottled in Bond set, today's pour vs some older ones from a few years back and we blinded them. The Old Fitz was the new 7yr and one from 2013. and the OGD BiB was the new 7yr vs one from 2018. While all of them were solid pours, I think we were all a bit surprised which was which.
Send us a textThe Scotchy Bourbon Boys taste and rate Old Fitzgerald 7-Year, finding this Heaven Hill wheated bourbon delivers impressive butterscotch and toasted coconut notes at a reasonable price point.• Old Fitzgerald 7-Year is part of Heaven Hill's wheated bourbon program including Larceny and other Old Fitzgerald expressions• This bottled-in-bond 100 proof bourbon presents rich caramel and butterscotch on the nose• The body has impressive viscosity with thick legs that coat the glass nicely• Flavor profile includes distinctive toasted coconut butterscotch notes• At $60, it represents good value compared to other premium bourbons• Final rating: 15 out of 18 on the Old Louisville Whiskey Company Barrel Bottle Breakdown• This bottling outperforms some older Old Fitzgerald expressions that become too oak-dominant• Kentucky Bourbon Festival appearances include Revival Vintage Spirits (Saturday 7-9:30pm), Neely Distillery, and Whiskey ThiefCome see the Scotchy Bourbon Boys during Kentucky Bourbon Festival week at our special events and tastings. Remember good bourbon equals good times and good friends. Drink responsibly and live your life uncut and unfiltered.Heaven Hill's Old Fitzgerald bottled-in-bond series has gained a devoted following among wheated bourbon enthusiasts, and the 7-year expression might just be the sweet spot in their lineup. This elegant decanter-style bottle with its distinguished wooden top houses a remarkable spirit that strikes the perfect balance between youthful vibrancy and mature complexity. When I poured this bourbon into my Glencairn glass, the rich amber liquid immediately caught my attention with its impressive viscosity. At 100 proof, it coats the glass with medium-thick legs that slowly cascade down the sides – a promising indication of the full-bodied experience to come. The nose opens with waves of caramel complemented by subtle ethanol, followed by enticing hints of butterscotch and gentle toasted oak notes that become more pronounced as the whiskey breathes. The tasting experience truly elevates this bourbon above many of its competitors. That first sip delivers a distinctive toasted coconut butterscotch flavor that sets it apart from other wheated bourbons on the market. The sweetness is perfectly balanced by oak tannins that provide structure without dominating the delicate wheat characteristics – a problem that sometimes affects the older expressions in this series. While the finish isn't extraordinarily long, it leaves a pleasant impression with lingering notes of butterscotch and subtle oak warmth. At approximately $60, this expression represents excellent value in today's premium bourbon landscape. It earned an impressive 15 out of 18 points on our comprehensive barrel breakdown rating system, with particularly high marks for its exceptional taste profile. Whether you're a dedicated collector or simply looking for a delicious pour to share with friends, the Old Fitzgerald 7-Year delivers a refined experience that showcases Heaven Hill's mastery of wheated bourbon production. Try it alongside other offerings in their wheated portfolio like Larceny or Bernheim Wheat Whiskey for a fascinating comparative tasting experience! A treasure hunt doesn't always require a map; sometimes, the greatest discoveries are hiding in plain sight on your local liquor store shelves. Alcoholic beverage expert Russ Kempton returns to the B-Team Podcast to guide Josh, Matt, and guest host Jim Corbett through a Bottled-in-Bond tasting that challenges perceptions and proves quality doesn't always correlate with price or scarcity. The journey begins with a fascinating history lesson on the Bottled-in-Bond Act of 1897, a groundbreaking consumer protection measure championed by Colonel E.H. Taylor to combat dangerous distilling practices. This legislation established strict quality standards requiring to be the product of one distilling season, aged at least four years under government supervision, bottled at exactly 100 proof, and produced at a single distillery – creating what Russ calls "a brand of authenticity."From the polarizing yet historically significant Mellow Corn ($15) to the surprisingly complex J.T.S. Brown ($20) and the leather-forward Old Grand Dad ($20), the team discovers remarkable quality in bottles many bourbon enthusiasts ignore while hunting allocated products. The tasting peaks with Old Pepper Bottled-in-Bond, drawing comparisons to much pricier options, and a rare Angel's Envy Bottled-in-Bond distillery exclusive that showcases rich wood tannins and exemplifies how distilleries test potential new expressions.Throughout the discussion, Russ emphasizes the importance of evaluating spirits objectively: "You never taste with your heart." This reminder that perception often influences enjoyment more than actual quality resonates as the bourbon boom moderates and previously scarce bottles become more accessible. The episode offers a refreshing perspective for collectors and casual drinkers alike, while the thrill of finding rare bottles continues, some of the best bourbon experiences are waiting right on the regular shelf, no allocation required.Take a break from the allocation chase and join us for a journey that might just change how you shop for whiskey. After all, as Russ pointedly asks about these overlooked gems: "What took you so long?"
In this community-powered tasting, The Bourbon Road hosts Jim Shannon and Todd Ritter dive into five fan-voted pours—each selected by members of their Bourbon Roadies Facebook group. With a lineup that spans both heritage and experimental releases, this episode explores everything from elegant bottled-in-bond bourbons to wheat whiskeys with a modern twist. The journey begins with Old Fitzgerald 7-Year Bottled-in-Bond, a wheated bourbon that brings smooth, sweet character in a classically elegant package. Bottled at 100 proof and adorned in its signature decanter, this release blends honey bread, soft spice, and subtle floral notes into a quintessential Old Fitz profile—refined and balanced. Next up is Old Grand-Dad 7-Year Bottled-in-Bond, a high-rye, Jim Beam-distilled bruiser that still manages charm. It delivers nutty sweetness, hints of citrus, and that signature Beam peanut brittle note—plus a surprise touch of green banana. Priced under $40, it's a contender for one of the best bottled-in-bond bargains of the year. Then the pour turns dark—literally—with Old Forester Extra Extra Old, part of their 117 Series. A richer, more oak-saturated version of the beloved 1910, this double-barreled bourbon lingers longer in its second barrel, extracting deep color and complexity. Expect chocolate-dipped molasses cookies, toasted oak, and syrupy texture in this 375ml limited release. The fourth pour steps up the age and elegance with Heaven Hill Heritage Collection 12-Year Bourbon, a 100-proof statement of mature Kentucky whiskey. Layered with vanilla bean, antique oak, dried fruit, and a velvety finish, it stands as a confident reminder of why Heaven Hill remains a pillar of the bourbon world. Finally, a bonus pour closes out the show: Star Hill Farm Wheat Whiskey—a unique take from the producers of Maker's Mark. Aged in honeycomb-textured barrels and bottled at 110.6 proof, this wheater leans toward chocolate malt, sweetbread, and baking spice. It's rich, bold, and distinctively modern, showing the experimental future of wheated whiskey. Throughout the episode, Jim and Todd offer sharp tasting notes, honest reflections, and plenty of bourbon banter. Whether you're a fan of heritage brands or curious about experimental expressions, this Roadies' Choice episode delivers a five-pour journey through the evolving landscape of American whiskey. The Jim Beam distillery recently resurrected a legend and released Old Grand Dad Bottled in Bond with a 7 year age statement. This return of age statements to bonded products is a recent trend that we have seen from many legacy distillers. Even though OGD used to carry an 8 year age statement, the return of the product to the shelf with an 7 year age statement and with an MSRP of $40 has been met with a lot of excitement. But how does the bourbon taste? More importantly, how does it stack up to some of it's recently released counter parts from other distilleries? Give us a listen this week to find out. It is worth noting that Kenny and Cam from Drums & Drams already did this blind and recorded it. We are working to get that video out ASAP, but the results in this episode did not match what Kenny & Cam did previously. Ohh boy. Jim Beam recently launched Old Grand Dad Bottled in Bond with a 7 year age statement. This product joins the trend that we've seen recently with legacy distillers returning higher age statements to bonded products. Old Grand Dad used to carry an 8 year age statement, but enthusiasts and newbies alike were happy to see the return of the age statement at an MSRP of $40. But how does this taste? More importantly, how does it stack up against other legacy distillers recent age stated releases? You'll have to give us a listen to find out. It is worth noting that Kenny had already done a similar blind with Cam from Drums & Drams. Even though we haven't put that video out yet, the results from this blind differ from that one. Ohhhh boy. Send us a textWe compare the newly released 2025 1792 Sweet Wheat bourbon with the 2023 release that's been open for a year, exploring how wheated bourbons evolve over time while scoring each on body, nose, taste, and finish.• 1792 Sweet Wheat is a 91.2 proof wheated bourbon that represents the classic bourbon style from Barton Distillery• Barton 1792 Distillery was founded in 1879 by Thomas Moore and is now owned by Sazerac Company• The freshly opened 2025 release shows strong vanilla, toast, and developing cherry notes with an excellent body presence• After a year open, the 2023 bottle displays significantly more caramel, an intense butterscotch-to-cherry transition, and a shorter finish• Both bottles scored 15/18 on our rating scale but achieved this through different strength categories• Wheated bourbons benefit substantially from being open for extended periods, allowing oxygen to develop the flavors• The colonial-styled 1792 bottle design reflects the historical significance of the year Kentucky became a stateVisit www.scotchybourbonboys.com for merchandise including our Glencairn glasses and t-shirts. Remember, good bourbon equals good times and good friends.Dive into the fascinating world of wheated bourbon with our comparative tasting of the 1792 Sweet Wheat 2025 release against its 2023 counterpart. This episode uncovers the remarkable transformation that happens when a quality wheated bourbon sits open for a year, developing complex layers of flavor that weren't present upon first pour. The Barton 1792 Distillery, established in 1879 by Thomas Moore, continues its tradition of excellence with their Sweet Wheat expression. At 91.2 proof, this bourbon replaces the traditional rye grain with wheat for a softer, more approachable profile while maintaining the distillery's signature character. Our side-by-side analysis reveals how oxygen exposure dramatically enhances this whiskey's profile over time. Our freshly-opened 2025 bottle immediately impressed with its long legs in the glass and a beautiful body that coated every corner of the mouth. The nose offered toasted notes with prominent vanilla, reminiscent of Brach's candy chews, eventually developing subtle cherry hints. On the palate, it delivered a remarkable cherry transition that one taster described as a "cherry flavored cigar" with a lengthy finish that earned it high marks in our rating system.Meanwhile, the 2023 bottle that had breathed for a year showed the magic that happens with patience. Its nose had transformed to showcase significant caramel development, while the taste featured an intense "momentary butterscotch" explosion that transitioned beautifully to cherry notes. Though its finish was shorter than the fresh bottle, its evolved complexity earned it equal overall points through different strengths.Whether you're new to wheated bourbons or a seasoned enthusiast, this episode offers valuable insights into how these spirits develop over time. The next time you crack a bottle of wheated bourbon, consider setting some aside to experience months later – you might be surprised by how dramatically it transforms. Happy Bottled in Bond Day! Yes, it's another whiskey episode, for a variety of reasons, and there's a chunk of beer as well, so it's kind of a boilermaker episode, if you will. I got hold of Al Laws, the founder and owner of the Laws Whiskey House in Denver. I told you about visiting there back in October of 2023 (in Episode 25+), but I didn't get to meet Al. Last week, their publicist reached out to me about March 3rd being Bottled in Bond Day, the anniversary of the signing of the federal Bottled in Bond Act of 1897. I love bonded whiskey, so I decided to do an episode on it and share that love. Al and I talk about using Colorado-grown grain to make a very grain-focused whiskey, more about high-altitude whiskey making, what wheat brings to whiskey, and yes, we did talk about bottled in bond whiskey. Then I had a rare opportunity to sample five Baltic Porters side-by-side with two brewers (both of whom have appeared on Seen Through A Glass before). I'll tell you how that happened, and you can listen in as we discuss the similarities and differences. What Was I Drinking Today? Bottle in Bond whiskey, of course: New Riff Balboa Rye, and what a beauty it was. The Happy Valley Adventure Board spot was about the upcoming Maple Festival at Shaver's Creek Environmental Center on March 22-23. Next episode: again, not 100% sure. I've got some feelers out, but... anyone want to do an interview? Cheers! We've tasted and reviewed a handful of Bulleit products in the past, but for this short, we taste and review their newest whiskey to hit the market. Bulleit Bottled in Bond is a new "very special bottling from the company" which boasted that the liquid comes from the 2017 distilling season. While the bottle does not carry an age statement, we surmise that it is at least 7 years old. But how does it taste and should you be hunting for this bottle? Actors Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley have released their latest edition of Brother's Bond Bourbon, a 7-year-old Bottled in Bond whiskey. It's a release that shows the two are serious about their whiskies, and not just slapping their names on a bottle. We'll talk with Paul and Ian on this week's WhiskyCast In-Depth. It's been a troubling week for the whisky industry with the bankruptcy of Kentucky Owl parent company Stoli Group USA and the collapse of Ireland's Waterford Distillery, and we'll have the details on both, along with President-elect Donald Trump's plan to impose tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico, which could include Canadian whisky and Tequila.
