23B. Flanders Red Ale by Bräu Akademie
This week the gang gets Belgian and discusses an under appreciated style... the Flanders Red Ale. They geek out over the tart, fruity, and slightly sweet style and while on a sour kick break out a mixed fermentation brew by Barrel Culture in Durham. Check it out!
Continue lendo "#89 – Brassando com Estilo: Flanders Red Ale" The post #89 – Brassando com Estilo: Flanders Red Ale appeared first on Brassagem Forte.
In this episode we review the BIB from Old Bardstown from the Willet's distillery in Kentucky and a Flanders Red Ale from Rodenbach. Rodenbach is a brewery in Roeselare, Belgium. We also chat about a special evening we had over zoom with co-workers from Keller Williams real estate company and also bad news for the restaurant industry, again.
There are a wide range of topics that we love to discuss with brewers on Radio Brews News. One of those is the point at which classic styles and innovation and novelty clash. Regular listeners would have heard Matt's recent conversation with Bentspoke Brewing's Richard Watkins when he released his Flanders Red Ale, Flemm. There was a time - and not that long ago - when this style of beer was the epitome of sour beers. With the recent trend of kettle souring and the flavour innovations that have occurred around it - and the many consumers that have discovered tart or sour flavours in beer as a result - it was interesting to see the widely varied comments on social media by drinkers who seemed surprised by this most classic of styles. The response was a great example of the tension that I suspect we'll always see as classic and established styles crash up against craft brewing's love for adventure. But we wanted to see what brewers thought, how they navigated consumer awareness and expectations and also the demands that are placed on them in a world of ever evolving styles and consumer tastes. Thanks to Bintani, we caught up with two brewers who, while both embracing creativity and new beer styles, are also highly awarded in classic beer styles, to hear their thoughts about the ever shifting sands of beer style. Enjoy the discussion with Bentspoke's Richard Watkins and Balter's Scott Hargrave. Richard Watkins is the co-founder of BentSpoke Brewing from the ACT. BentSpoke brews some of Australia's most popular craft beers and are available nation wide. They recently released one of Australia's first barrel aged beers in a can, Flemm - a Flanders Red Ale. He stopped by to tell us all about it.
We're headed back to Belgium this episode to break down a truly original beer style. We will talk about all the little microorganisms and fungi that make beers like this so sour and funky. We also touch on beer blending, why Belgians make the best sour beers, and we'll finish it all up with a lengthy discussion of The Simpsons. Also, I am putting the link to that Draft Magazine article I mention in the episode right here

Hopco has been supplying Aussie brewers, both Pro and Home, with the best hops from their overseas partners since 2001. For the last 4 years or so, the man in charge of their Sales and Marketing has been Jon Burridge. So when I ran in to Jon at Black Hops Brewing while we were both holidaying, and he said he wanted to jump on my podcast to talk hops, I jumped at the chance.Jon and I both live in Hobart, so it seemed like a great idea for us to record this interview in my works podcast studio, until we covered it in a mix hop pellets and beer cork remnants...but I digress. In this episode, among other things, we talk about:The benefits of fresh hops;Supporting the home brew community;Working with brewers to find the perfect hop;The latest trends in hops; andDreaming of hop allocations for brewers;Oh, and, we try to open up a Flanders Red Ale from Crux Fermentation with a Ryobi cordless drill!Enjoy!https://www.facebook.com/BeerHealer

After 102 episodes we finally returned to Naked Brewing in Huntingdon Valley, PA. Despite suffering a possible concussion, owner Brian Sucevic returned to the mic with as much irreverence as ever, joined by newcomer David Wood – now serving as head brewer. We talked upcoming beers, changes since our last visit, Dave’s hatred of glitter beer, Philly Beer Week, some bouts of random trivia, and more. Dan reported on New Realm purchasing Green Flash’s equipment, MillerCoors’ response to Stone Brewing’s Keystone lawsuit, and a creepy crawly burger. In Happy Fun Time we played a 4/20 inspired variation of Libation or Fabrication called Beer or Bud and Steph gave us a rundown of the Flanders Red Ale style in Know Your Beers. During these proceedings we sipped on several Naked brews – from pitchers, because of course we did. Do you love Beer Busters? Of course you do!
This week we catch up with Jeremy Halse, Head Brewer at Lion's White Rabbit Brewery in Geelong. We talk about Jeremy's long history in brewing, the approach of White Rabbit Brewery and discuss the new Red Ale. We discuss whether there are some styles that just don't fit with the idea of 'entry level' and whether you can make a Flanders Red Ale approachable. You can read the media release about the White Rabbit Red Ale here. In the pre-ramble, Pete and Matt discuss the World Beer Cup and just how US-centric it is, including discussing the percentages. You can click the image to download the full analysis of entries and results.

Season 1, Episode 22 - It’s that special time of the year when pumpkin beers abound. This week, we carve it up. This week on the show, we’ve got two homebrews from our Aussie brother from a different mother, “The Beer Mule”, and two interesting craft beers from Hangar 24 Craft Brewery. Many of you may know The Beer Mule. You know, that globe-trotting-drink-you-under-the-table Aussie dude who also happens to be a pilot? Well, we were lucky enough to get some of his homebrew on the show this week. We kick it off with what we think is his New Zealand hopped Pale Ale (after further reaserch…it is. Motueka & Wai-iti hops) called Kiwi Skunk. It’s an overall refreshing beer that’s crystal clear and vibrant, given that it’s two months old. The next beer on deck is The Mule’s Flanders Red Ale, Intro To Oak. From all accounts, this year spent probably around a year in secondary souring-up, and was bottled on 9.9.2014. Right off the bat, this beer smelled great. It had all of the usual characteristic that one would find on the nose of this style of beer. We dive into this beer further on the show, and in summation: sour beers need a lot of time and patience. Hangar 24 Craft Brewery – Falling Leaf. Label customized by Bob Vreeland. Next are two beers from a brewery that’s near and dear (and quite local) to us, Hangar 24 Craft Brewery. Our buddy, Bob Vreeland, hooked us up with H24’s newest “Barrel Roll” series of barrel-aged beers called Falling Leaf, and their seasonal release, Gourdgeous. Essentially, Falling Leaf is Gourdgeous aged in bourbon barrels. Both beers are made with pumpkin and spice, and as we all know, pumpkin beers tend to really divide beer drinkers quite a bit. When it comes to pumpkin beers, you either love them or hate them. However, pumpkin beers present themselves in many different styles of beer, so pumkin beers shouldn’t be judged soley because they are made with pumpkin. Have we said pumpkin enough yet? Pumpkin. Pumpkin. PUMPKIN! Things get a little crazy at the end of the show, which at this point seems to be par for the course. So yeah…deal. BREW THE SHIT OUT OF IT! Homebrewing beer. Flanders Red Ale is a deliciously sour and slightly funky beer. Rodenbach makes a great example of this style. Jamil and Jon explain how to brew a great Flanders Red.
