If you're into electronic music, chances are, you're a fan of Kosta Athanassiadis, commonly known as XDB. The veteran DJ and producer has been consistently putting out beautiful music and making dancers move and sway for a long time, with a career in music spanning thirty years. With releases, on Metrolux, his own label, as well as Sistrum Recordings, Dolly, and Echochord, one would be surprised to find out that it wasn't until 2020 that XDB put out a full-length LP when his genre-defying album “Inspiron” came out on Dial. But taking time to build up and do things properly seems to be Athanassiadis's M.O., in regards to both releases and DJ sets. And today's premiered track, a perfect slow-burner for warm-up sets, happens to be no different. XDB truly goes back to his deep roots in a groovy remix of “GR2", commencing with a hypnotic synth line right at the track's forefront, eventually taking a step back. Sharp high hats, synth stabs and snare drum rolls work together for the duration of the track to ensure that party attendees will be dancing. Athanassiadis's remix comes as part of the “Dark Path” EP, the first release on the Deep Series (a Diaphan Music sub-label) since 2014. Dad's hipping son to the Hip Hop of his day. Thanks to a cool mix from a DJ named Marv, Dad played his boy the entire mix on a drive from Philadelphia to New York (because they scored tickets to the Tonight Show). After each and every song, son asked "That's them too?" "Yes, that's them too," smiled Dad. "They sound so different, every song," the boy with the eager ears said. "Well, they are musicians and their main voice, Black Thought, what a name eh(?), he's more than a rapper, he raps poetry, stories, information and encouragement." "I thought rappers just talked about themselves and how they the best," said son. "They are best at self-aggrandizement, I always needed more son," taught Dad. (The Seed 2.0 starts playing) "Oh who is this? Are we finished listening to the Roots," asked son. "That's them too," beamed Dad while reaching for the + sign on the volume control. "Wow, that's them too," said son with a voice that trailed off as he looked out the window and saw New York City on the horizon. (Narrator: "Each time [son] asked "That's them too," in his mind's eye, heart & soul and deep in his consciousness, he was actually saying, "That's me too. That's me too. That's me, too. DJ Tomas – Umoja Hi-Fi Sound Station "I’m A Rootsman, Part 1: Deep Roots Mix" A 73 minute selection of deeper roots reggae music from the 1970s and ‘80s. This selection focuses on slower, dubbier tracks with conscious themes and lyrics. I was trying to invoke the spirit of reggae radio in the ‘80s – be it pirate radio in the UK, college radio in the US or Dread at the Controls broadcasts in Jamaica. Another inspiration was DJ Andrew’s foundation/roots underground parties in Los Angeles in the mid-90s. A UK native and carpenter, Andrew would hold late night affairs in small after-hours bars on Fairfax Ave, focusing on strictly roots and culture selections.
