Justitieminister Verlinden wil de wettelijke termijn voor abortus optrekken van twaalf naar veertien weken. Maar achter dit besluit schuilt een ongemakkelijke realiteit, zeggen betrokkenen. Voor de meeste vrouwen die vandaag naar Nederland uitwijken voor een abortus, verandert er nauwelijks iets. ­ “Wij hebben vorig jaar 54 vrouwen geholpen”, zegt Anton Van Dyck, coördinator van Compagnon. Dat is een organisatie die vrouwen in kwetsbare posities begeleidt bij het reizen naar Nederland voor abortuszorg ná de Belgische termijn. “Van die 54 zouden er welgeteld twee geholpen zijn met de nieuwe wetgeving.” Het wetsontwerp dat op tafel ligt van de regering, trekt de abortustermijn in ons land op van twaalf naar veertien weken. ­ Nochtans pleiten experts al jaren voor een veel ruimere hervorming. Hun advies: achttien weken. Dat zijn er nóg vier minder dan bij onze noorderburen, waar abortussen worden uitgevoerd tot in de 22ste week van de zwangerschap. De veertien weken die bij ons op tafel liggen, vormen het resultaat van een compromis dat de coalitie overeind houdt, maar volgens critici veel vrouwen in de kou laat staan. ­ “Er zijn bijvoorbeeld mensen in heel kwetsbare situaties die de weg niet vinden naar de hulpverlening, die niet goed weten wat ze ermee moeten en dan te laat komen bij de dokter”, illustreert journaliste Veerle Beel van de binnenlandredactie. “Vrouwen die het niet op tijd weten, die zich schamen of die het huis niet uit mogen om een abortus te laten uitvoeren binnen de wettelijke termijn.” ­ Waarom blijft abortus zo'n politiek mijnenveld?
