Send us a Text Message.Born and raised in the Netherlands, classically trained multi-instrumentalist and producer Nicolay played in a number of hip-hop and R&B bands around his homeland, but it wasn't until 2000 that he decided to start producing his own beats. In 2002 Little Brother MC Phonte Coleman stumbled across one of them on Okayplayer's message board and asked if he could put his rhymes over it, and soon a friendship and a musical relationship were born. This transatlantic collaboration, which they called The Foreign Exchange, led to an album, Connected, in 2004, after which Nicolay continued producing tracks for Little Brother and Cesar Comanche, releasing City Lights Vol. 1.5 first only online and then through BBE Records in 2005. The Dutch Masters, Vol. 1, which featured Nicolay DJing, came out that same year, followed by Here in 2006. In 2008 the producer teamed up with Houston rapper Kay (whom he had also met through message boards and had put on a track on Here) and issued the album Time:Line. The second Foreign Exchange album, Leave It All Behind, came later in the year on the Foreign Exchange label.Follow Nicolay HereSupport the Show.WEBSITE AND MERCH! - http://www.officialchopshoppod.com

Disclaimer! We recorded this on Friday, and it seems that every time we record early God punishes us. So we didn't talk about the J Cole apology at all in this because it hadn't happened yet. I think everything we said still stands, and if anything some of it is even truer now. The only thing I (Louis) would like to walk back is when I gave him props for going at him, because what he ended up doing was cowardly and lame. Every once in a while, an interview turns more into a conversation amongst rap dudes. We anticipated having Rapper Big Pooh and Phonte for just 45 minutes, so when I tell you the interview lasted 2 hours and 30 minutes, it tells you just how funny and relatable these guys are to talk to. We covered an awful lot, yet it wasn't nearly enough once it was over. We discuss the May the Lord Watch documentary, their love for Beck or Bjork and their hate for Sci-Fi and its magical white people. We touch on their ridiculous stretch of music that ultimately burnt them out. We get into the brilliance of Curb Your Enthusiasm, Ice Cube's Death Certificate, which is better Low End Theory or Midnight Marauders, and Dominican broads making chili con queso. We also talk Ghostface, Murs, Common, The Roots, Evidence, Kendrick Lamar and their affection for Outkast. I saw a great quote the other day and it said, "If Wu-Tang is for the kids, Little Brother is for the ones that raise them." Thanks to Rapper Big Pooh, Phonte, Andre Barnes and our longtime homie, I.D. for the idea. Stay tuned as we prepare to drop our Little Brother tribute in early March. Enjoy the discussion. www.takeitpersonalradio.com www.patreon.com/TakeItPersonal Follow us on Instagram @takeitpersonalradio

Murs 3:16: The 9th Edition, Murray's Revenge;Little Brother 以及 Justus League 成员在当时都是 Okayplayer 论坛上的活跃用户,这也是后来 Phonte 与荷兰制作人 Nicolay 相识组成 The Foreign Exchange 的契机;Little Brother 的成长环境相比于街头 rapper 更加贴地纯真,所以成员也并不追求“larger than life” 的酷,Native Tongues 和 De La Soul 才让他们有共鸣,他们的音乐是一种面向生活的真情实感和所思所想;首张专辑 The Listening 的制作过于独特,虽然在商业上成绩一般,但 The Source 和乐迷论坛上都获得了高评价,当时涌现出了一批与商业说唱划清界限的嘻哈音乐人,注重个人现实生活和思考的叙述,有了 Backpack Rap 这样的标签;2005 年发布的 The Minstrel Show 是 Little Brother 最精彩的,说唱历史中最被低估的一部作品,概念来自于 Spike Lee 2000 年上映的电影“Bamboozled”,整张专辑以一个电视娱乐节目作为主题线索,将故意的戏仿,讽刺喜剧融入音乐,Phonte 和 Big Pooh 在叙事内容上更加成熟,配合 9th Wonder 标志的制作风格,不仅具有深刻的思考,难得的是 Little Brother 的戏谑幽默,让这部讽刺专辑(satire)达到了奇妙的平衡;Phonte 在纪录片中有表达过整张专辑的一个 statement:In the minstrel shows the late 1800, white and black performers would blacken in their faces with cork and perform stereotypical grossly exaggerated racist caricatures of black culture, fast forward 200 years and black people are still performing in these shows celebrating senseless materialism, excessive violence and blatant misogyny, only today they aren't known as minstrels, they are known as rap stars. Chicken and watermelon have been replaced with rims and jewelry, turning hip hop into one big modern day minstrel show, such is the central idea behind Little Brother highly anticipated and wildly and imaginative sophomore album The Minstrel Show. Playlist:Little Brother - “Beautiful Morning”Murs & 9th Wonder -“Dark Skinned White Girls”Little Brother - “Speed” Little Brother& Consequence& Kanye West - “I See Now” Little Brother feat. Little Brother, the iconic rap group from North Carolina is back on tour and celebrating the 20th anniversary of their debut album "The Listening." Both Phonte and Big Pooh join Panama Jackson to talk about their journey from a trio to a duo, their evolution as artists, and their impact on stars like Kanye West. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Little Brother is a rap group from North Carolina. The three original members – Phonte, Big Pooh and 9th Wonder – were living in their college dorms when they decided to make music together. They hit open mics and played local shows, but they never expected a rags-to-riches story. After uploading a few songs to a hip-hop message board called Okayplayer, they released their debut LP, The Listening. By indie-label standards, it was a hit. They signed to a major label, but their second album didn't perform as well as they would've liked. After being dropped by their label, 9th Wonder left the group and Little Brother disbanded shortly after. In 2019, Phonte and Big Pooh reunited as Little Brother and dropped their album May the Lord Watch. Now, they're on tour to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their debut album. They also have a documentary in the works. This week on Bullseye, Phonte and Big Pooh join us to reflect on their long and eventful career as Little Brother.
