Send us a Text Message.Born and raised in the Netherlands, classically trained multi-instrumentalist and producer Nicolay played in a number of hip-hop and R&B bands around his homeland, but it wasn't until 2000 that he decided to start producing his own beats. In 2002 Little Brother MC Phonte Coleman stumbled across one of them on Okayplayer's message board and asked if he could put his rhymes over it, and soon a friendship and a musical relationship were born. This transatlantic collaboration, which they called The Foreign Exchange, led to an album, Connected, in 2004, after which Nicolay continued producing tracks for Little Brother and Cesar Comanche, releasing City Lights Vol. 1.5 first only online and then through BBE Records in 2005. The Dutch Masters, Vol. 1, which featured Nicolay DJing, came out that same year, followed by Here in 2006. In 2008 the producer teamed up with Houston rapper Kay (whom he had also met through message boards and had put on a track on Here) and issued the album Time:Line. The track is part of Cookiee Kawaii's upcoming album Club Soda. Vol. 3 and immerses the listener in a euphoric world of seductive beats and velvety dipped sonics. Cookiee adds, the song is for, “people who love club music but want more of a R&B vibe.” Her windswept vocals collide with a power-punching rap sequence for an intoxicating Jersey club meets R&B tinged banger that truly takes it over the top.Cookiee Kawaii has received high acclaim from Vogue, Fader, BET, Billboard, XXL, Okayplayer, Flaunt, and New York Post to name a few. Little Brother is a rap group from North Carolina. The three original members – Phonte, Big Pooh and 9th Wonder – were living in their college dorms when they decided to make music together. They hit open mics and played local shows, but they never expected a rags-to-riches story. After uploading a few songs to a hip-hop message board called Okayplayer, they released their debut LP, The Listening. By indie-label standards, it was a hit. They signed to a major label, but their second album didn't perform as well as they would've liked. After being dropped by their label, 9th Wonder left the group and Little Brother disbanded shortly after. In 2019, Phonte and Big Pooh reunited as Little Brother and dropped their album May the Lord Watch. Now, they're on tour to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their debut album. They also have a documentary in the works. This week on Bullseye, Phonte and Big Pooh join us to reflect on their long and eventful career as Little Brother.

B. Cox is joined by Chris Mitchell (Kinetik) of the Breaking Atoms Podcast to review Little Brother's classic debut studio album The Listening as it turns 20. The group, which was formerly made up of the trio of emcees Phonte and Big Pooh and producer 9th Wonder, met as students on the campus of North Carolina Central University. They bonded over their shared love and passion of hip-hop and formed a collective with other North Carolina college students who were hip-hop artists and producers which would become known as the Justus League.Pooling together their resources and creativity, the trio started recording their debut album. After working their local hip-hop scene and the college radio circle in their home state of North Carolina, the group signed its record deal with ABB Records and gained a sizable fanbase, following and a community online though forums such as their own Justus League The LAWN, OkayPlayer and other hip-hop sites. Boosting the groups popularity was the skills and creativity Phonte and Pooh and the soulful sample based production of 9th Wonder that drew comparisons in tenor and tone to predecessors such as groups from the collectives the Native Tongues and Soulquarians. Over 65 minutes and utilizing a concept used frequently in hip-hop, the album is presented through the lens of a radio station broadcast schedule, WJLR, presenting all of the tropes of terrestrial radio complete with skits and fictional disc jockeys which accompanied the album's tracks. While the album had no major singles or sales numbers to report, its legend has been boosted by their niche, but loyal fanbase that has followed them since the beginning. The album has been deemed an underground and indie hip-hop classic and the launching pad of a group that has had a successful, yet complicated two decades in the industry.Follow Chris Mitchell (Kinetik) Onlinehttps://linktr.ee/iamkinetikVisit The Vault Classic Music Reviews Onlinewww.vaultclassicpod.comCheck Out Our Clothing and Merch Shop and Cop Some Gear!www.vaultclassicpod.com/storeBuild Your Own Amazing Podcast Website In Less Than 5 Minutes!https://www.podpage.com/?via=ivecre8Support The Vault Classic Music Review on Buy Me A Coffeehttps://www.buymeacoffee.com/vaultclassicpodShow NotesPassion Weiss: The Oral History of The Lawn (by Chris "Kinetik" Mitchell)https://www.passionweiss.com/2022/03/24/the-oral-history-of-the-lawn/Albumism: Little Brother's Debut Album "The Listening" Turns 20 | Album Anniversaryhttps://albumism.com/features/little-brother-debut-album-the-listening-album-anniversaryPitchfork: Little Brother "The Listening" Review https://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/little-brother-the-listening/GQ: Little Brother Looks Back On 20 Years Of "The Listening" https://www.gq.com/story/little-brother-the-listening-album-20-yearsHipHopDX: Little Brother on 'The Listening' at 20 & Marauding For Earshttps://hiphopdx.com/news/little-brother-the-listening-20-year-intervew Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-vault-classic-music-reviews-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

On Episode 122 we're going back to NYC circa 2000-2005, where mix show radio dominated the airwaves. Where clan's, posse's, crew's and clik's peaked with G-Unit, Dipset, D-Block, Terror Squad, Ruff Ryders, Murder Inc and The Roc. This was fresh-off the Nas and Jay-Z battle, when NYC was thriving again and when a kid named Justin Smith completely changed the game. Justin Smith aka Just Blaze went on to produce more hit records than any other hip-hop producer during this time. I can't stress this enough, but before there was Kanye West, there was Just Blaze. There also was no bigger artist than 50 Cent. He wasn't just big in music, he was internally known with every major corporation for his undeniable charisma, street anthems and fashion. And speaking of fashion, remember the oversized white tees? How about Mitchell & Ness jerseys? You also had to have a fresh pair of Tims and white Air Force 1's. Who could forget those gaudy Canal Street watches we wanted to pass-off as Jacobs? We may have lacked self-awareness in fashion but we definitely can acknowledge the incredible music to come out of this era. Whether you bumped Hot 97, Kiss or Power or downloaded joints off Napster, Limewire or Kazaa, you knew special this time was. We gotta thank to Nas, Jadakiss, Killa Cam, 50, Mobb Deep, Jay-Z, Ghostface, Fabulous, Black Rob, M.O.P., Ja, Styles P and Fat Joe for giving NYC back their sound. This show is a homage NYC mix show and because we're always trying to find a balance like Atmosphere, our next episode we're giving you our college radio edition. Think of Non Phixion, D.I.T.C., Freddie Foxxx, Screwball, Wee Bee Foolish, El-P and J-Live. Think Fat Beats, A-1 and Turntable Lab. Think of the joints you copped off Sandboxautomatic and HipHopSite. Think of the message board era of Okayplayer, HipHopInfinity, UGHH and the best of all, the Philaflava forums. We are going to give you the ultimate yin and yang that NYC hip-hop had to offer during these great times. The world has been captivated by Beyoncé's 7th studio album RENAISSANCE ever since it dropped nearly two weeks ago. And while many have relished in the excitement of the new era Beyoncé has ushered in, it hasn't been without some controversy. Amidst a crediting conflict primarily between artist Kelis and music producer Pharrell, another issue arose. Some disability advocates took issue with a song lyric containing the word 'spaz' in the track “Heated.”  It's a word rooted in the word spastic, a medical term often used to describe those who suffer from disabilities involving muscle spasms. Beyoncé's not the only artist who has received criticism for the use of the term. In June, Lizzo also received similar backlash after including the word in the lyrics to the song "Grrrls." In response both artists removed the word from their lyrics. Writing this month for OkayPlayer, Clementine Williams noted that the term has often been used by Black artists to mean “going wild,” and that the initial call outs on the Beyoncé and Lizzo lyrics were largely made by white disability activists. However, the double meaning and history of its use in African American Vernacular English does not negate the harm the term can cause for the disabled community. Instead, moments such as these have helped create dialogue around what accountability can look like in the music industry, and even drawn the conversation to the growing movement and consciousness around disability. But for Black disabled writer, poet, activist, and scholar Leroy Moore Jr., he couldn't help but notice a critical voice missing from the conversation: Black disabled artists. Leroy was born with cerebral palsy and has dedicated much of his writing and activism to disability rights. He co-founded Krip-Hop Nation, a movement that uses hip-hop as a means of expression for people with disabilities and this movement has grown to different parts of the world including parts of Africa and Europe. He is also a doctoral student in linguistic anthropology at UCLA, and he writes and delivers lectures and performances that reflect the intersections between racism and ableism, in the United States and abroad.  Leroy joined The Takeaway to give us his take on the situation. He addressed the problematic nature of both policing Black language while erasing Black disabled voices and he shined a light on the ways Krip-Hop Nation is working to make change.

Baltimore born Brian Dawkins is an experienced creative director, brand consultant, events coordinator, audiovisual technician, recording and performing artist. Known in the creative community as Greenspan, he discovered his passion as a creative at an early age. Being inspired by artist from Otis Redding and Marvin Gaye to Nas, AZ, and UGK, he started penning his rhymes soon thereafter and made his debut into music in 2008, with his first project, "Got Green?," that was later sponsored by Scion, a marque of Toyota motor corporation. Since debuting, he's consistently provided music fans a discography of standout projects. He has set himself apart in the hip hop arena as an artist with his unique sound and commanding live performance. He has been contributing to the creative community for over 15 years, performing at premier venues nationwide. He's had exclusive releases and premieres with sites such as Okayplayer.com, Vibe.com, and DJBooth.net, as well as features on a host of media outlets and publications. Multilayered in his approach to creative communication, Dawkins has participated in various speaking engagements, including a creative writing workshop co-conducted by fellow emcee and mentor Stan 'Substantial' Robinson, at Amazon's headquarters in Seattle, Washington. He's also had opportunities to speak and work with corporations like McCormick & Company on behalf of his No Food Deserts food-access awareness initiative, focusing on food security for the residents of Baltimore and beyond. No Food Deserts' efforts have afforded opportunities to partner with organizations like Class Produce, Dovecote Cafe, and City Weeds/BeMore Green to implement helpful solutions like weekly pop-ups where fresh produce is distributed free to communities. From Baltimore With Love, a phrase, brand, and movement created by Dawkins, as a declaration, to encourage a positive outlook on the city of Baltimore and its residents. The brand distributes apparel and other items with the phrase printed, to city residents and those originally from the city that have since moved away. From Baltimore With Love has had the opportunity to partner with Baltimore City Public Schools' Office of Engagement for an anti-bullying/positive mindset initiative during the school year 2020, to visit selected city schools with impact programming to encourage empathy and self-worth. Identifying collaboration potential is a strength that Dawkins displays over the years as he's continued active involvement with organizations like Six Point Pictures, and Good Villain Clothing Company who's signature 'Wire" t-shirt was featured in Overbrook and Sony Entertainment s' motion picture "Charm City Kings."   Instagram - @Frombaltimorewithlove Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/FromBaltimoreWithLove/ Website - http://frombaltimorewithlove.com

To be the greatest of all time at anything requires hard work, dedication, and usually a little bit of luck. But keep in mind, not every GOAT is sports related.  Technically, there is a greatest TV watcher of all time… But the subject of today's show is no couch potato.  He's been on the cover of magazines, cereal boxes, and posters hanging on the wall of most guys who grew up in the 90's – the one and only, his Airness, Michael Jordan.  Jordan changed the landscape of the NBA once he got in the league.  Winning world championships, slam dunk contests, and generally making the competition look like amateurs when he was in his prime.  But the stories that have come to light over the years don't paint a picture of Jordan being the best teammate.  He defended his position in the recent documentary, The Last Dance, but did we hear all the stories?  What could MJ have done to land him in the courtroom today?  Come fly with me as we roll through the Michael Jordan episode of AHC Podcast.       Intro music credits: Title: Finally The Sun - Audio Hertz / Crossfit 2021 (No Copyright Music) Video Link: https://youtu.be/bdf82dDHn_4 Genre Music: Trap - Gym - Workout - Sport - Exercise at Home - Gaming     Citations: Dougherty, J.
