The Power of The Pivot | How to Embrace the Detours of Life & Realize You've Already Arrived

Send us a Text Message. Some have called me the pivot queen. As a riskier person by nature, it's been a bit less challenging for me to pivot than most people I've met and I have found that continuing to enhance our ability to shift direction swiftly is a massive life skill and deeply connected to masterful listening. This episode dives deep into what it means to live a RAD life, that is, to have Really Awesome Detours and the courage to pivot when it makes sense. I share a pretty epic story about my journey through the corporate world, and how meeting the incredible Sam Shank, the founder and CEO of Hotel Tonight (now a part of airbnb) was another massive pivot that instantly reframed my relationship to failure. Most people are afraid to pivot because they don't want to feel like they're failing themselves. What if failure was just as fulfilling as success? What if it's even better? Often pivoting gets equated with quitting and quitting gets affiliated with failure. I say, quitting is one of the smartest things I've ever learned to do. It's just about doing it at the right time for the right reason. In this episode I invite you to embrace the powerful pivots of our one precious life. I dedicate this episode to the greatest pivot of my life, my canine companion Rad. I also dedicate this one to Dr. James Doty whose book, "Into the Magic Shop" that I speak about might have been the greatest pivot of my life. And, if you want to read more about the power of knowing when to quit/pivot/take a really awesome detour, I am linking the book, "The Dip" by another one of my greatest mentors, Seth Godin. Here's to leading a RAD live and allowing ourselves to change course when we realize we might be winning the wrong race. This week, Canada legalized pot. That’s a big deal because it’s the largest country to do it, and because it’s a major milestone in one of the most impressive rebranding exercises in a generation. When I was growing up, many warned against marijuana as a gateway drug, the province of hippies and slackers. Now it’s becoming a multi-billion-dollar global industry, and Elon Musk is toking during a podcast. Seems like an appropriate time to polish off that old meme: “We would like to congratulate drugs, for winning the War On Drugs.” For the Fortt Knox 1-on-1 this week, I bring you my conversation with Sam Shank, cofounder and CEO of HotelTonight. That business is another example of seizing the moment. Shank had achieved smaller success with a travel technology businesses in the past, but this one was timed to a revolution when it came to life eight years ago. The idea: a smartphone app that finds you last-minute deals on hotel rooms. At first, you couldn't book any further out than a week in advance. The concept has evolved significantly since then. Today, it’s not just on smartphones, and you can now book three months in advance. The startup has raised more than $100 million. Shank has some advice for aspiring entrepreneurs, intriguing insights into why HotelTonight needed to start the way it did, and an update on the prospects of an IPO for the company.  Learn more about your ad choices. Sam Shank, serial entrepreneur and travel industry vet, set out to make an app-only business that appealed to the spontaneous traveler with Hotel Tonight in 2010. That was a time when relying solely on a mobile-device audience was a novel idea. An easy-to-use interface allows travelers to book their stays the day of arrival (and up to seven days in advance). The company sells unsold rooms at boutique and independent hotels and capitalizes on the millennial prioritization of experience over material possession. Hear Shank talk about what inspired the idea, how he built up the app – and why the company that tried to outsmart Hotel Tonight failed to do so.

The live mobile video streaming revolution may have just gotten what it needed to go mainstream.   Apple TV now offers a Periscope app, allowing millions of users to watch user generated live streams from the comfort of their own couch.   Of course, the writing was on the wall when Periscope first launched “Couch Mode”, a clever way of auto-playing similar streams without the need to select. Then there was the move to landscape mode. Two moves that allow the app to be powerful features on that big screen at home.   Here are my three quick conclusions for Apple TV and Periscope:  This “partnership” may open up the TV space to other social platforms. Apple will own third party experiences and user generated content. Apple has leverage to negotiate with cable companies for their seemingly inevitable live streaming TV service. The Brand Boost Podcast mission The Brand Boost podcast is the show for brands looking to create the ’start-up sexy’ marketing ideology all while commanding total brand appeal.   About Periscope       Periscope is a live video streaming app for iOS and Android developed by Kayvon Beykpour and Joe Bernstein.   Periscope lets you broadcast live video to the world. Going live will instantly notify your followers who can join, comment and send you hearts in real time. The more hearts you get, the higher they flutter on the screen.   Beykpour and Bernstein came up with the idea for Periscope while traveling abroad in 2013. Beykpour was in Istanbul when protests broke out in Taksim Square. He wanted to see what was happening there, so he turned to Twitter. While he could read about the protests, he couldn't see them.   They started the company in February 2014, under the name Bounty. They raised $1.5 million from Founder Collective, Scott Belsky, Maveron, Google Ventures, Menlo Ventures, Bessemer, Stanford – StartX and Sam Shank in April 2014.   Periscope was acquired Jan, 2015 by Twitter before the product had been publically launched. One investor source says the acquisition amount was "sizeable", above $50 million. Another says it fell between $75 and $100 million. A third says the deal was "smallish".   The acquisition was officially announced in a tweet from Periscope and retweeted by Twitter CEO Dick Costolo on March 13 after the rival video streaming app Meerkat was a breakout hit at South by Southwest 2015 (Mar 13-17). Meerkat became the talk of SXSW partially due to Twitter cutting Meerkat off from its social graph just as the festival was starting.[8]   Periscope was launched on March 26, 2015.[9][10] Later, on May 2

Sam Shank originally thought he wanted to be a Hollywood film director so he moved out to California to find his fame. He managed to get a job with the legendary director Wes Craven and worked on the now famous movie Scream. Quickly he learned that his reality wasn't anything like his dream. He spent most of his time running errands just like 99% of the others with the same dream. His entrepreneurial spirit kicked in quickly and he decided to create his own destiny so he moved to the center of the dot-com world, San Francisco. Sam knew he wanted to start a technology business, but knew he wasn't ready yet. So he decided to try to learn everything he could. He knew he was ready when, as he says, "You're ready when it feels just uncomfortable enough that you can bear starting a company because it's hard, it's intimidating, it's going to be a total grind, it's brutal, it's the hardest thing you're ever going to do.
