As you'll hear in this interview, the latest data and statistics around aging are almost too hard to believe. Here are just two data points. As of 2007, it's expected that about half of all babies born will live to be over 100 or become what are called centenarians. And by 2024, it's expected that workers aged 55 or older will represent a full 25% of the nation's workforce, with the fastest annual growth rates among those aged 65 and older. And yet, before Primetime Partners was founded by Abby Levy and venture legend Alan Patricof of Greycroft and Apax Partners fame, there were no venture firms focused solely on aging and enabling the technologies, products, and businesses we'll need to support an aging population.

Julio Vasconcellos is the Founder and Managing Partner @ Atlantico, one of the leading early-stage funds in Latin America. Prior to the world of venture, Julio got his break in the world of startups as Facebook's first country lead for Brazil. Julio then went on to co-found Peixe Urbano, a company he scaled to over 1,200 employees and $100M+ in revenue. Post the sale of Peixe Urbano, Julio became an EiR @ Benchmark Capital where he met Scott Belsky. Scott and Julio went on to co-found Prefer, a Benchmark backed company transforming the future of work. If that was not enough, Julio has a stellar angel track record with prior investments in the likes of Ipsy and Quinto Andar. In Today's Episode with Julio Vasconcellos We Discuss: 1.) Entry into Startups: What are 1-2 of Julio's biggest takeaways from being Facebook's first hire in Brazil? What does Julio know now that he wishes he had known at the start of his career in startups? 2.) Lessons from Scaling Peixe Urbano to $100M in Revenue: How does Julio advise founders on when is the right time to launch a second product or market? How does Julio advise founders on the right balance between growth and unit economics? When times are tougher, should founders cut fast or cut slower? What is irreversible? What are the single biggest and worst things to break in hyper-scaling? 3.) Investing: Why Not Enough Play To Win: What is more important, a great market or a great founder? Why do not enough VCs today play to win? If they do not play to win, what do they play to do? Why is greed the number one enemy of venture returns? What are the single biggest investing lessons Julio has learned from Benchmark Founder, Andy Rachleff? How have they impacted his investing mindset? Why does Julio believe you can have a close relationship with founders as an angel and not a VC? How did Julio's approach to investing change with the transition from angel to VC? Does Julio believe that boards really add any value? If so, how? What is Julio's biggest investing hit? How did it change his approach? What is his biggest miss? How did that impact his mindset? 4.) The Future for LATAM: Is Julio as concerned as I am by the removal of growth stage capital from the LATAM ecosytem? Does this mean a higher mortality rate for LATAM companies? How does Julio advise founders? How did COVID adoption of technology in LATAM fundamentally differ to the US?

In it we cover: (00:00:00) – Introduction (00:01:57) – How Erling's daughters inspired his book about silence (00:07:36) – Erling's experience walking solo to the South Pole (00:13:34) – Erling's expeditions across the Atlantic and to the North and South Poles (00:21:15) – Erling's struggle with dyslexia, and how reading became an important part of his life (00:24:23) – How Erling dove into philosophy (00:29:51) – On how Erling got into book publishing, the publishing process at Kagge Forlag (00:47:55) – Why moving slowly is better than speeding through life, and how walking plays into that (01:01:01) – Erling's daily rituals ABOUT ERLING KAGGE Erling Kagge is a man of many firsts. The New York Times has described Erling as a philosophical adventurer, or perhaps an adventurous philosopher. In 1990, Erling and his expedition partner Børge Ousland became the first people to ever reach the North Pole unsupported. Over the course of 58 days, they covered nearly 500 miles on skis, pulling hundreds of pounds of supplies behind them the entire way. In 1993, Erling became the first person to make a solo, completely unsupported expedition to the South Pole, where he covered over 800 miles in 50 days without any contact with the outside world.  And in 1994, Erling summited Mount Everest, completing what's called the “Three Pole Challenge” by making it to both the North and South Poles, as well as the summit of Mount Everest. Out of those experiences, he's published multiple best selling books, including two of my all time favorites, Silence: In the Age of Noise, and Philosophy for Polar Explorers: What They Don't Teach You in School.

This comes back to some of the questions we've been asking today, what do you value? What are you optimizing for in your life? What is your vision? What are you trying to create?” – Chris Sparks EPISODE GUIDE (LINKS, QUOTES, NOTES, AND BOOKS MENTIONED) https://www.danielscrivner.com/notes/experiment-without-limits-chris-sparks  FULL TEXT TRANSCRIPT https://www.danielscrivner.com/notes/experiment-without-limits-chris-sparks-transcript/  CHAPTERS This episode is our definitive guide to achieving peak performance through experimentation. Designer Fund was founded by Ben Blumenrose and Enrique Allen in 2012 after the two met at a program put on by Stanford's D school, where students use design to develop their own creative potential. When Ben and Enrique founded Designer Fund, there were few companies in Silicon Valley outside of Apple that understood the power of design to build incredible products, create a category defining brand, and ultimately forge an enduring company. There were also no other venture capitalists with a pure design background. And yet, over the last decade Designer Fund has built an incredible venture firm. They've produced top quartile returns for their investors, beating out almost all of their peers in the market, and we're early investors in a wave of design-centric companies that have defined the last 10 years, including Stripe and Gusto.

In it we cover: (00:00:00) – Introduction (00:02:13) – Longevity in investing (00:03:37) – Investment philosophy at Compound Kings (00:09:05) – Source documents can level up investment knowledge (00:11:23) – Consuming info vs. processing info (00:14:02) – Key tools and learnings from fintwit (00:16:30) – Who you spend your time with is paramount ABOUT ROBERT CANTWELL Robert Cantwell is Founder of Upholdings and Portfolio Manager of Compound Kings, which is an exchange traded fund focused on investing in compounders. I had Robert Cantwell on last year in episode 23, where he joined me shortly after launching Compound Kings in late 2020. Before founding Upholdings and launching Compound Kings, Robert had an incredible career, both as an operator and an investor. Robert started his career as an analyst at Elevation Partners, which was co-founded by U2's lead singer Bono. He then worked at the long short hedge fund Meru Capital before serving as Everlane CFO for five years. Robert founded Upholdings in 2019 and officially launched Compound Kings in late 2020. In this episode, we cover why Robert is obsessed with how we think, process information and make decisions. The single biggest lessons that Robert has taken away from launching and scaling Compound Kings over the last two years, how being a compounding focused investor is different than being solely growth or value focused, why he skips to the back of investment books and goes straight to the source material to form his own opinions about the contents of the book, the investing tools that he and his team use daily at Compound Kings to beat the S&P 500, and his three-step process for consuming thinking through and ultimately coming to conclusions about everything that he reads.
