In Jan 2013 a new church began in London - with singing, a sermon and a great sense of community - but for godless people. Atheist stand up comedian Sanderson Jones who co-founded "the Sunday Assembly" talked about its first meeting and why he set it up. David Robertson, at the time a church minister, asked questions about whether an "atheist church" makes sense and what Christians could learn from it. Justin was also joined by two of those who attended the first service, Rory Fenton and Simon Jenkins.   • Subscribe to the Unbelievable? podcast: https://pod.link/267142101 • More shows, free eBook & newsletter: https://premierunbelievable.com • For live events: http://www.unbelievable.live • For online learning: https://www.premierunbelievable.com/training-and-events • Support us in the USA: http://www.premierinsight.org/unbelievableshow • Support us in the rest of the world: https://www.premierunbelievable.com/donate

We spend a lot of time feeling very serious about seeking meaning in our lives; but is it possible that the secret lies in making the search more fun? Can we say a creative, mutually affirming “yes” more often? And when do we need a self-protective “no”? This week Andrew and improv comedy star Pippa Evans have lots of fun together as they compare the strategies of improvisational comedy with those of therapy. Perhaps the most interesting lesson from improv: “be in the moment that is, not the one you thought would come along”.  Pippa Evans is a comedian and writer known for her skills in improvisational comedy. She was a core member of the improv team behind the award-winning stage show Showstopper: The Improvised Musical which toured the UK and abroad, and has regularly appeared on BBC radio.  Pippa likes to “use jokes to find connection”, and teaches courses on improvisation and the ways it can help improve our relationships with ourselves and with others. She has recently written a book called Improv Your Life: An Improviser's Guide To Working With Whatever Life Throws At You. Among her many other accomplishments, Pippa is also the co-founder of the Sunday Assembly, a church for non-believers.  Follow Up Join our Supporters Club to access exclusive behind-the-scenes content, fan requests and the chance to ask Andrew your own questions. A man finds himself by chance in the country he fled as a political prisoner as the virus spreads and he is trapped. An atheist looking for peace in lockdown. A writer looking for a way to stay united with her community. Very different people, with very different beliefs, united in prayer. In a special Heart and Soul series for the BBC World Service, amidst the Coronavirus pandemic, the journalist John McCarthy brings together reflections from people of faith around the world. In this fifth programme, John hears how people are reaching for prayer at this time - in an age old response to such a crisis. Prayer can be a repeated phrase, a daily ritual, a casual conversation or a cry for help and it is not just people of conventional faith who are doing it. Sanderson Jones does not believe in God, but the stand-up comedian says he has found something akin to prayer whilst pushing his son in a buggy in his allotted daily exercise. Mario Aguilar is a hermit who lives a life of quiet contemplation. But he was on a short visit in his native Chile when lockdown began. Order, discipline and simple prayer have carried him through what he admits has been a tough time. As the world faces the prospect of many months of lockdown we hear how prayer and meditation can bring comfort and calm. Presenter: John McCarthy Producer: Olive Clancy

In this fourth programme of a special Heart and Soul series for the BBC World Service, amidst a global pandemic of Coronavirus, the journalist John McCarthy hears how the notion of community has changed as many people continue to be denied the chance to gather for religious practice. Across the world the way people live their daily lives has radically altered. What new communities are emerging? Whether online, in our family or households, or simply a new relationship with neighbours, we hear reflections on how faith communities are changing and perhaps becoming deeper in their spiritual practice during this global crisis. While people are keeping their distance, a sense of community is growing. People of faith and no faith are reaching out to support others. There seems to be an urge to share something more profound than just being together physically or clapping for nurses and doctors. Hiba Siddiqi works for the Islamic Relief charity in Pakistan; Adaobi Tricia Nwaubani is an award winning writer who lives in Abuja, Nigeria, Reverend Julian DeShazier is in Chicago; Tarunjit Singh Buttalia is a science professor, originally from India but now living in Ohio, USA; Sister Rachel Denton has led a life of quiet prayer alone for decades and Sanderson Jones used to be a stand up comedian. He doesn’t believe in God, but he does believe in community. So much so, he set up an alternative Sunday Assembly. Presented by John McCarthy Produced by Olive Clancy

This podcast is the first in a series of episodes where I'll be focussing on our annual event here in the south of England called the Happy Startup Summercamp. We first held this event in 2013 and we're now into our 7th year. Summercamp is the business event that Laurence and I were looking for when we were running our digital agency. It's a heady mix of inspirational talks, practical workshops, fun activities, deep conversations and serendipitous connections. We have veteran campers who come back every year and we have new attendees who have no idea what they're in for. They come together as strangers and leave as friends. Over the next 5 episodes I'll be talking to some of our Summercamp contributors so you can get to know them and what they bring to camp. My hope is you'll have a better understanding of what it's like to be at the event. I'm kicking off the series with the MC of Summercamp and the glue that sticks everything together. Sanderson Jones is one of the founders of Sunday Assembly and also the creator of Lifefulness. In Sandeson's words Lifefulness is to congregation what mindfulness is to meditation. During the discussion we talk about peak experiences, the importance of gathering with others and what it's like to be on startup love island. If you're passionate about building community and hosting events that create real impact then listen on. Technology has transformed the way we communicate with each other but many people are still left feeling out of touch and lacking that sense of community. How can we change the way we interact to tackle the rise in loneliness? And how can we make sure technology is bringing people together instead of isolating people behind a screen? Joining Nesta’s Nigel Campbell to discuss this are Sanderson Jones, Founder of The Sunday Assembly (New Radical 2014) and comedian Carrie Deacon, Head of Social Action Innovation at Nesta. We also hear from Ivo Gormley from GoodGym an organisation that supports people to get fit while doing good in their local communities. They enable young people to make regular runs to an older person who may find it difficult to leave their home, building a one-to-one reciprocal relationship.

Cass and Dr. Bob talk with Brynda Quinn, a local Psychologist here in middle Tennessee. We met at the Nashville Sunday Assembly where she spoke on the same Sunday that Bob and Cass spoke. She doesn’t have a strong religious back story, but Christianity doesn’t have a corner on causing shame. Brynda’s story involves a chaotic dysfunctional family, a stint in Saudi Arabia, and her personal pursuit of perfection and the toll that takes on the human experience. This episode is our nod to the benefits of psychology. We play an excerpt from a TED talk given by a Psychologist who has greatly influenced Brynda: Kristin Neff. Neff is an associate professor in the University of Texas at Austin's department of educational psychology. She created the Self-compassion Scales. She has been credited with conducting the first academic studies into self-compassion. Brynda is a big proponent of Sunday Assembly, the atheist “church” started by Sanderson Jones and Pippa Evans in 2013 in London. Wikipedia describes it as a gathering mostly for non-religious people who want a similar communal experience to a religious church, though religious people are also welcome. Moving and grooving in the aisles in 'Celebration of Life', singing along to Bonnie Tyler's 'I Need A Hero' and listening to Alice in Wonderland readings is just part of the joy, fun and uplifting things that go on in the Sunday Assembly, co-founded by stand-up Comedian, Sanderson Jones.   So what IS this all about? How does someone go from touring Australia, gigging at the Edinburgh fringe being part of the London comedy scene, suddenly out of seemingly nowhere begin a monthly 'church service' for atheists?  No worship, no altar, no communion wine - a need breed of spiritual gathering in a traditional setting.  As Sanderson says, 'we kept all the good stuff of church services'.  We managed to track  down and interview this bushy bearded non-vicar who is now drawing in the crowds with over 200 people worldwide to set up their own Sunday Assemblies.  Living up to his comedian status, Sanderson keeps us in stitches of laughter with this short and spirited chat.  If this is a taster of what goes on at the Sunday Assembly then no wonder it is packed out and becoming more popular by the month...look out for them coming to a Church near YOU!!!  These guys are on fire.
