That huge, seismic moment in wine is part of the nation's 250th anniversary celebration, and Stephen Velasquez, curator of the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History's Division of Home and Community Life, joins us with all the celebratory details, including the upcoming 2026 Winemaker's Dinner; · Since the Judgment of Paris is part of today's conversation, it made sense to also invite Claudia Chamberlain to join us. In this episode of the South Baltimore Now podcast, we sit down with John Shea and Brendan O'Brien—two South Baltimore neighbors who are blending decades of high-level financial expertise with a deep-rooted love for their community. Together, they've launched Old Irish Guys Financial, a venture built on the idea that sound financial advice should be as accessible as a conversation with a neighbor. The journey to this partnership began in the world of institutional finance. Brendan's roots go back to the "late 1900s" at Leg Mason before he transitioned to the independent side with LPL Financial. Meanwhile, John's career kicked off at State Street Bank, where he managed public pension funds before eventually serving as the Director of Development for the Baltimore Family Alliance. After years of navigating the complexities of large-scale finance, they've "hung up their own shingle" to focus on what matters most: providing neighbor-to-neighbor coaching right here on the peninsula. While both John and Brendan are Boston natives, they've found their true home in South Baltimore. They discuss the "hooks" that kept them here, choosing to raise their families in the heart of the city rather than retreating to the suburbs. Their commitment is visible in their support for local institutions like Francis Scott Key and Federal Hill Prep, proving that families don't have to move once their kids hit third grade. From volunteering at local sports to advocating for walkable turf fields, they are proof that community involvement and city living go hand-in-hand.Net Worth & ChillThis philosophy of accessible advice extends to their new podcast, The Penny and the Pint. They've coined the phrase "Net Worth and Chill" to help couples navigate the often-stressful conversations surrounding money and significant others. Whether they are helping clients consolidate "pots of money" scattered across old 401(k) plans or offering a 30,000-foot view to balance retirement, college savings, and the inevitable home repairs of city life, John and Brendan are focused on the big picture.Learn More:Website: oldirishguysfinancial.comPodcast: Look for The Penny and the Pint on all major podcast platforms.* Shout Out to Liv's Tavern for hosting us to record in-person. We just lived through the same crisis — an ice storm that froze Nashville in place for the better part of a week and caused the worst power outage the city has ever seen. While we all experienced it, everyone's experience was different, even from one neighbor to the next. Some lost power for two weeks. Others had lights and heat the whole time. Some had trees split their home in two. Others just had to clean up a few sticks. Some had frozen pipes that left them homeless. Others were already unhoused and “remarkably unbothered” by the cold. The ice storm of 2026 will become a core memory for many of us. For others, the outages and related damage is the least of our problems. Reactions have ranged from anger to empathy and resignation to activation. Today, we're doing a bit of an autopsy on the emotional anatomy of a collective crisis. We'll look at how we should process all that these last two weeks brought up, and we're taking your calls later in the hour.GuestsKate Martin, M.Ed., LPC-MHSP, The EstuaryAshley Hampton, Director, Healing In The MarginsAnita Richardson, native Nashvillian and new participant in the NES solar programRev. Emotional Maturity: "Becoming Whole in Christ" sermon by Rev. Karla Shaw Additional resources related to this week's topic: 1. Peck, M. Scott. The Road Less Traveled. Simon & Schuster, 1979. This extraordinary book begins with the statement, "Life is difficult." Life was never meant to be easy and is essentially a series of problems that can either be solved or ignored. He shows how these techniques enable the pain of problems to be worked through and systematically solved, thereby producing growth. He argues that most people try to avoid the pain of dealing with their problems, when it is through facing the pain of problem-solving that life becomes more satisfying and meaningful. 2. Frankl, Viktor. Man's Search for Meaning. Beacon Press, 2000 First published in 1946, Dr. Frankl recounts his experiences surviving the death camps of the Holocaust and describes how it gave him a new understanding of the way people find meaning for their lives. According to Frankl, one can find meaning in work, in love for another, and in the courage required to endure suffering. While passing through the darkest pits of the human capacity for evil, he didn't emerge angry, resentful, or nihilistic; rather, he was encouraged, optimistic, and hopeful by observing what he describes as man's ultimate freedom and responsibility—to choose one's atitude in any given set of circumstances. 3. Martin, James. The Jesuit Guide to (Almost) Everything. HarperOne, 2012. While not primarily addressed to the non-believer, non-believers will profit from reading this book for an intelligent, rational explanation on why it is important to pray, to examine one's actions, and to hold those actions up to a higher standard. Martin is unlike most contemporary American religious writers. Rather than offering words of disapproval and judgment, he writes words of understanding, wisdom, justice, acceptance, and love. The Jesuit Guide is not only filled with helpful advice on living the examined life, but it faithfully describes Christianity as a place of hope, faith, and caring.

Most of us think we're pretty good at listening. From kids asked to "whakarongo mai" at school, to a one-on-one catch up with a friend, listening can't be that hard, can it? But what changes when the person speaking feels truly heard or understood? And what similarities are there between listening to others, and listening to God? In this episode, Petra talks to sexologist and relationship coach Meg Cowan about how we can better listen to others. Later on, fan favourite Rev. Spanky Moore returns to share what he has noticed in the years he's spent listening to God, and helping others to do the same. Rev. "We believe that the divine presence is everywhere... But we should believe this especially without any doubt when we are assisting at the Work of God." The Rule of St. Benedict is a foundational spiritual guide composed by St. Benedict of Nursia, the father of Western monasticism, around 530 AD. In the chapters comprising this second episode, Benedict details the structure of the Divine Office, establishes the rhythms and roles of community life, and provides guidelines for the disciplinary measures to be taken against erring brothers. Products often tell you exactly how they're intended to be used. But why leave it at that? As a culture, we have long had a knack for finding ingenious, off-label uses for things. In this episode, we take a close look at a few examples of products that are ostensibly meant for one thing, but are better known for something else entirely. We explore Q-tips, which we are explicitly told not to put into our ears; the Hitachi Magic Wand, the iconic sex toy marketed as a body massager; the musical washboard; and the children's electrolyte solution Pedialyte that many adults swear by as a hangover cure. You'll hear from Hallie Lieberman, author of Buzz: A Stimulating History of the Sex Toy; Jacqui Barnett of the Columbus Washboard Company; Christopher Wilson, curator and chair of the Division of Home and Community Life at the Smithsonian; musician and educator Súle Greg Wilson; zydeco musicians C.J.
