In this episode Nana Biamah Ofosu and Andrew Clancy interview Shelley McNamara and Yvonne Farrell of Grafton Architects. Nana is a tutor in the Kingston School of Art, leading studies into precedent and the lessons found in territorial Ghanaian architecture as part of her Second Year Studio. Grafton Architects are the current Pritzker Laureates, an accolade that arrives as they appear to be gathering pace with a remarkable series of university buildings completed in the last few years, and more on the way. At the heart of Graftons practice is a concern for the human aspects of architecture - how it is made, how it affects those who use it, and how it speaks to the society that it forms a part of. In this discussion Shelley and Yvonne discuss their education, those critical first few projects, and how they have navigated their career since then. The highest honor in architecture has gone to two designers from Ireland. The 2020 Pritzker Architecture Prize was awarded in March to Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara, co-founders of the Dublin design firm Grafton Architects. We speak with Farrell and McNamara. In this episode we are joined by Prof Hugh Campbell Hugh is a writer, a curator and an educator. His research examines the the relationship between photography, architecture and built space and the visual culture of cities. His recent publications include the edited volume Architecture 1600- 2000, volume 4 of the RIAI/Yale UP production Art and Architecture of Ireland (2014); a special issue of Architecture and Culture on Architecture and Film, edited with Igea Troiani. Forthcoming are an edited book on Architecture Filmmaking (also with Igea Troiani) to be published by Intellect in 2018, and a book Space Framed: Architecture, Photography and Built Space, to be published by Lund Humphries in early 2019, which will built upon a sequence of papers and book chapters on this theme. With Nathalie Weadick, he was curator of Ireland's pavilion at the 2008 Venice Biennale. Yvonne Farrell & Shelley McNamara si sono diplomate allo University College di Dublino e nel 1977 nella stessa città hanno fondato lo studio Grafton Architects. Sono state docenti allo University College di Dublino e professori invitati in diverse scuole di architettura internazionali. Yvonne Farrell e Shelley McNamara sono entrambe laureate in architettura all'University College di Dublino, hanno dato vita fin dal 1978 allo studio Grafton Architects a Dublino. Entrambe sono membri del RIAI (Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland), del RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architecs) e sono state elette nella Aosdána, la prestigiosa Irish Art Organization. Dal 1976 al 2002 hanno insegnato alla School of Architecture dell'University College di Dublino sono state visiting porfessors all'Accademia d'Archittettura di Mendrisio e all'EPFL di Losanna. Nel 2009, con l'edificio per il Dipartimento delle finanze a Dublino, si sono aggiudicate il Civic trust Award e l'Architectural Association of Ireland Special Award. A Milano hanno realizzato l'ampliamento dell'Università Bocconi: diversi corpi di fabbrica che ospitano aule per la didattica, uffici, una biblioteca e la grande aula magna, racchiusi da una cortina di pietra che all'interno si collegano creando dei pozzi di luce che raggiungono anche livelli posti a nove metri sotto il suolo.
