As this year closes, I'm feeling a mix of frustration and optimism. This moment feels chaotic—as does most of life lately—which is why I often end the show with, “rise above the chaos.” We can't eliminate it, but we can manage what's within our control. The Stoics told us that long ago: focus on what you can control, release what you can't, act with virtue, and let obstacles sharpen resilience. This essay is about taking back even a small amount of control through the work we do and the spaces we shape. The Problem with Trend-Driven Design This year, phrases and hashtags flew faster than ever—Quiet Luxury, Brat Green, Fridgescaping, Millennial Grey. Much like the “big, beautiful bill” language we've all heard tossed around in political discourse, design's buzzwords can distract from what actually matters. They generate attention, not meaning. They look good on social media, not necessarily in the lived experience of a home, workplace, or public square. So instead of centering our design conversations around fleeting edits, let's pivot toward the global innovations that are transforming the built world in ways that truly matter. These are the concepts with longevity—the ones shaping smart, resilient, human-centered spaces: Biophilic Design, rooted in the work of Edward O. Wilson, Erich Fromm, and Japanese shinrin-yoku, continues to reframe our relationship with nature. Net-Zero Architecture, pioneered in Canada, Germany, and Australia, redefines building performance through projects like Seattle's Bullitt Center and Colorado's RMI Innovation Center. Smart Homes and Invisible Tech, building on early Asian innovation, hiding circuitry and functionality behind seamless design powered by Apple, Google, and Amazon ecosystems. Passive House Design, born in Germany but rapidly shaping U.S. projects in California, New York, and the Pacific Northwest. Rethinking the Shelter Space For years I described architecture as a language, design as a dialect, and landscape as the narrative. Mies van der Rohe famously introduced the concept of architecture as language. It caught on, and then the bandwagon effect took over. But today, the metaphor feels insufficient—especially for the shelter space, where people spend their lives, raise families, work, heal, and age. The shelter space isn't like a retail store or restaurant, where design is often intended for those who pass through briefly while the people who labor there navigate the leftover space. The shelter space must serve those who inhabit it deeply and continuously. And that shifts the conversation. Design begins with the usual questions—purpose, function, users, goals, budget. But these questions don't define design. They only outline it. There is no universal purpose of architecture or design, no single philosophy, no singular “right” answer. The shelter space varies as widely as the people living within it. So instead of treating architecture and design as technical processes, we should approach them philosophically. A Philosophical Framework for Design Stoicism offers clarity: Accept that budget overruns and changes will occur. Respect the expertise of the designer you hired. Invest in authenticity rather than dupes. Create environments that support health—clean air, clean water, noise reduction, resilience. Utilitarianism reminds us that choices have consequences. If the design decisions you make are based on influencer content instead of expertise, the result is no surprise. And now, a new framework is emerging that could transform our shared spaces entirely. Sensorial Urbanism: Designing the City We Actually Feel One of the most compelling movements emerging globally is Sensorial Urbanism—a shift from focusing on how the city looks to how it feels. It's neuroscience, phenomenology, and inclusive design rolled into a multi-sensory toolkit. Five Key Sensory Principles Soundscaping Water features masking traffic. Acoustic pavilions. Designed sound gardens. Paris' Le Cylindre Sonore. Soundscape parks in Barcelona and Berlin. Smellscaping Native flowers, herbs, and aromatic trees restoring identity—especially critical after disasters like wildfires. Kate McLean's smellwalks map a city's olfactory signature. Tactile Design Materials that invite touch and respond to temperature—stone, wood, water—connecting inhabitants to place. Visual Quietness Reducing signage and visual clutter, as seen in Drachten, Netherlands, creates calmer, more intuitive environments. Multisensory Inclusivity Design that accommodates neurodiversity, PTSD, aging, and accessibility through tactile paving, sound buffers, and scent markers. Why It Matters Because cities didn't always feel this overwhelming. Because design wasn't always rushed. Because quality of life shouldn't be compromised for aesthetics. Sensorial Urbanism reconnects us with spaces that are restorative, intuitive, and emotionally resonant. A city is not just a picture—it is an experience. C dans l'air du 15 décembre 2025 - Ces épidémies qui inquiètent les agriculteurs... et l'OMSL'épidémie de dermatose nodulaire continue de se propager sur le territoire, et les agriculteurs se font entendre. Plusieurs actions de blocage se déroulent ce lundi 15 décembre dans le sud de la France, en réaction à l'abattage de plus de 200 bovins en Ariège la semaine dernière. Routes coupées et mobilisation témoignent d'un mécontentement croissant dans la profession, alors que la ministre de l'Agriculture est attendue ce lundi après-midi à Toulouse pour aborder la crise et lancer symboliquement une grande campagne sanitaire : la vaccination d'un million de bovins en France.« Bien sûr qu'il y a de l'angoisse, parce que chacun s'imagine que le virus est à la porte de son bâtiment d'élevage. Mais la situation est sous contrôle », a tenté de rassurer Annie Genevard ce matin sur France 2, ajoutant que la « discussion sur la suspension des abattages est ouverte ». « Les éleveurs font des propositions sérieuses et réfléchies. Nous allons écouter, regarder, concerter », a promis la ministre.Après être apparue cet été en Savoie, la dermatose nodulaire touche désormais l'Aude, où un premier cas a été détecté ce lundi, après avoir affecté la Haute-Garonne, la Savoie, l'Ain, le Jura, les Pyrénées et l'Ariège. Une maladie qui inquiète et divise le monde agricole. Car si la FNSEA appelle au calme et défend la stratégie gouvernementale, des éleveurs s'opposent à l'abattage systématique des troupeaux touchés et dénoncent le lancement bien trop tardif d'une campagne de vaccination. D'autres pointent l'inaction de l'État face à cette maladie et appellent à un contrôle accru des mouvements d'animaux.La ministre défend de son côté sa stratégie, affirmant s'appuyer sur « ce que la science nous dit, ce que les vétérinaires nous disent, ce que les pays étrangers ont appliqué ». « Il y a trois piliers : le dépeuplement (c'est-à-dire l'abattage, ndlr), la vaccination et la restriction des mouvements », a-t-elle énuméré, ajoutant que « cette stratégie a fonctionné en Savoie, en Haute-Savoie, dans le Jura, en Italie, en Espagne ». « Il faut que chacun ait conscience que l'ennemi, c'est le virus. D'abord, il faut respecter les consignes. Il faut limiter les mouvements, sinon tout va s'étendre et on ne maîtrisera plus rien », a insisté Annie Genevard ce lundi matin.Depuis vendredi dernier, les blocages se multiplient aux quatre coins de la France pour dénoncer la politique sanitaire du gouvernement. Et c'est loin d'être fini. Après d'importantes mobilisations menées tout le week-end, les syndicats ont déjà appelé à d'autres actions toute la semaine. Car d'autres dossiers brûlants alimentent aussi la colère des agriculteurs, comme la baisse annoncée du budget de la Politique agricole commune (PAC) européenne, l'accord de libre-échange prévu entre l'UE et les États du Mercosur, mais aussi la résurgence de la grippe aviaire.Le virus H5N1 atteint un niveau inédit et la France se retrouve parmi les pays les plus frappés par une grippe aviaire en pleine accélération. Entre foyers qui se multiplient, propagation fulgurante en Europe du Nord et risque de mutation, l'hiver s'annonce sous haute surveillance. La circulation très active du virus fait en effet craindre le passage de ce virus à l'humain.Alors, qu'est-ce que la dermatose nodulaire ? L'épidémie qui sévit actuellement au Sénégal semble marquer le pas, même si la circulation du virus reste intense pour le bétail. Selon les derniers chiffres du ministère de la Santé et de l'Hygiène Publique, le pays sahélien a enregistré 463 cas confirmés, dont 31 décès et 416 guéris. Début 2025, c'est la République centrafricaine qui avait signalé des cas de fièvre de la vallée du Rift, dans le nord-ouest du pays. Comment la maladie se transmet-elle ? Peut-on la prévenir ? Quels sont les symptômes ? Comment endiguer une épidémie ?  La fièvre de la vallée du Rift est une maladie animale, une zoonose virale, qui peut dans certains cas toucher l'humain. Mais, jusqu'à présent, aucune transmission interhumaine de cette arbovirose n'a été répertoriée. Cette zoonose vectorielle est transmise par plusieurs espèces de moustiques (Aedes, Culex), qui prolifèrent notamment à la saison des pluies. Les femelles moustiques peuvent transmettre le virus à leurs larves, dont les nymphes seront contaminées à l'éclosion.  Vaccinations du bétail  La fièvre de la vallée du Rift touche essentiellement les animaux, le bétail (vaches, moutons, chèvres…) et plus rarement les êtres humains, notamment les personnes qui travaillent auprès des animaux dans le secteur de l'élevage. Elle a été identifiée pour la première fois au Kenya, dans la vallée du Rift, en 1931.   Les signes chez l'animal sont la hausse des naissances d'animaux morts-nés et la vulnérabilité des jeunes ruminants. L'animal contaminé est faible. Il présente des symptômes fébriles comme des vomissements et parfois des diarrhées sanglantes. Chez l'humain, il existe plusieurs formes : certaines sont sévères, associées à des douleurs musculaires, une fièvre et des saignements qui conduisent au décès.  Une stratégie de riposte combinée  Des flambées de fièvre de la vallée du Rift ont été recensées, ces dernières années, en Afrique subsaharienne : Égypte, Afrique de l'Est, République Centrafricaine, Somalie et même Madagascar et le virus est aussi présent au Moyen-Orient. Ces derniers mois, c'est le Sénégal et la Mauritanie qui sont touchés. Le Sénégal, où les autorités sanitaires sont engagées dans une riposte contre la fièvre de la vallée du Rift, depuis le mois de septembre, pour contenir les foyers épidémiques et limiter la propagation du virus. We visited renowned architect Bernard Khoury in his studio in Karantina, who offered a critical, unvarnished look at the reality of practicing architecture in Lebanon, contrasting it with the sugarcoated story of the "Phoenix coming out of its ashes". He discusses his career beginnings, the 2020 Beirut port explosion, and how his first project—the infamous B018 nightclub—was a radically specific and necessary response to the city's complex, macabre history and unstable political and economic context. He co-founded the Arab Center for Architecture (2008), was a visiting professor in several universities including the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne and L'Ecole Spéciale d'Architecture in Paris. He has lectured and exhibited his work in over 150 institutions, including solo shows at the Aedes gallery in Berlin (2003), the Spazio per l'architecttura Milano (2016) and numerous group shows including YOU prison at the Fondazione Sandretto in Torino (2008), the opening show of the MAXXI museum in Roma (2010), the Frac Architecture Biennale in Orleans (2018), the Oris House of Architecture in Zagreb (2020) and the Architecture Biennale of Seoul (2021). A remarkable fog installation in the sculpture garden of the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin, by Fujiko Nakaya. This site-specific installation activates once per hour, and fills the garden with vaporous fog, playing with the architecture of Mies van der Rohe. Fog formations emerge from different sides of the garden, blending with the trees and permanent sculptures, before slowly dissolving into the sky.  The moving fog appears at various densities, at times at a nearly tangible volume, at others as a translucent veil. Das Konzept des geplanten Museums für Moderne Kunst „berlin modern“ überzeugt nicht, findet der Architektur- und Bauexperte Nikolaus Bernau. Nach dem Richtfest am Wochenende, bei dem auch eine Baustellen-Begehung möglich war, meint Bernau in SWR-Kultur: „Das neue Museum wird große Probleme haben wegen der hohen Betriebsmittel, die notwendig sind.“ Der Bau werde zwar teuer - 506 Millionen Euro stehen inzwischen zur Debatte – aber bei den Ausgaben für Personal, Reinigung, Ankauf und Ausstellungen sei zu knapp. Auch architektonisch ist Bernau enttäuscht: Die benachbarten Bauten von Hans Scharoun und Mies van der Rohe beziehe der Neubau nicht ein. Zur Neuen Nationalgalerie findet Bernau: „Die wird regelrecht an den Rand geschoben.“ Fragen stellen sich auch beim Konzept: „berlin modern“ setze auf ein konventionelles und elitäres Konzept: Es wolle nur Kunst zeigen. Moderne Museen, so Bernau, böten jedoch mehr an und fordert: „Es müsste ein sozial ganz offener Raum sein – es müsste Leute erreichen, die nie ins Museum gehen.“ Bei der Kunsthalle Mannheim und bei der Hamburger Kunsthalle funktioniere das hervorragend.

Kultūras rondo mēģinām saprast, kas ir tad, kad „Visa pasaule kā Bauhaus”. Ieskatāmies izstādē "Visa pasaule kā Bauhaus" un jautājam, kā Latvijā ieraudzīt "Jaunā Eiropas Bauhaus" paraugus. Vācijā ir trīs svarīgākās Bauhaus pieturas – Veimārā, Desavā un Berlīnē, bet Rīgas vārds saistīts ne tikai ar Rīgā dzimušām, savam laikam ļoti progresīvām māksliniecēm, bet arī ar beļģu mākslinieku un arhitektu Henriju van de Veldi, kura projektētajā namā kādu laiku mitusi Bauhaus skola. Bauhaus kustība pastāvēja tikai 14 gadus no 1919. līdz 1933. gadam, taču pieder  pie nozīmīgākajām 20. gadsimta arhitektūras, dizaina un mākslas skolām, kas sintezē mākslu ar amatniecību un dzīvesveidu. Svinot Bauhaus simtgadi, tapa vērienīga izstāde "Visa pasaule kā Bauhaus". Tagad tā skatāma Rīgā, mākslas muzejā "Zuzeum". Visinteresantākais ir tas, kas izstādei tapušas arī divas unikālās ekspozīcijas par Bauhaus māksliniecēm – sievietēm, kas saistītas ar Rīgu. Īpaša vieta ir Idai Kerkoviusai, kurai radiniece, žurnāliste Suzanna Kerkoviusa veltījusi romānu "Ida", kas tagad nonācis arī Latvijas Nacionālajā bibliotēkā. Kultūras rondo Bauhaus atklājumi kopā ar Suzannu Kerkoviusu, pētnieci Esteri Kajema un projekta radošo direktori Valēriju Hammerbakeri, kas pārstāv IFa (Vācijas ārējo sakaru institūtu). Raidījumā arī iespēja dzirdēt, kā skanēja Bauhaus dibinātāja Valtera Gropiusa Bauhaus manifests. Tas ir laiks pēc Pirmā pasaules kara, un cilvēkiem ir jāizšķiras, kāda būs jaunā dzīves vide un dzīves veids. Bauhaus skolas dibinātājs  1919. gadā Veimārā ir arhitekts Valters Gropius. Bauhaus programmai un manifestam kā vizuālais simbols tika izvēlēta katedrāle. Bauhaus manifestā tā simbolizē arhitektūras, amatniecības un mākslas ideālo vienotību, kā tas bijis viduslaiku celtnēs. Starp citu – vairāki Bauhaus radīti dizaina paraugi dzīvo vēl mūsdienās. Izstāde "Visa pasaule kā Bauhaus" Rīgā, mākslas muzejā "Zuzeum", skatāma līdz decembra beigām. -- Un noslēgumā atbilde uz jautājumu, kas ir "Jaunais Eiropas Bauhaus" mūsdienās. Šo iniciatīvu 2020. gada septembrī izsludināja Eiropas Komisijas prezidente Urzula fon der Leiena. Praksē tas nozīmē, ka, īstenojot projektus ar Eiropas Savienības finansējumu, jāievēro trīs "Jaunā Eiropas "Bauhaus" principi. Tie ir skaistums, ilgtspēja un iekļaušana. Un šī gada Latvijas Arhitektūras galvenās balvas ieguvēji arhitektūras birojs "MADE arhitekti" šos principus iedzīvinājuši koka bērnudārzā Salaspilī, kurš izceļas ar ilgtspējīgu un inovatīvu dizainu un kurš saņēma arī "Jaunā Eiropas Bauhaus" atzinības balvu. Par godīgumu arhitektūrā un sabiedrības izpratni, kas ir paliekošas vērtības un ilgtspējīga domāšana arhitektūrā, pārrunājām Kultūras rondo.

Vorige maand is de Nederlands-Australische Peter Mies toegevoegd aan de Football Tasmania Hall of Fame. Photo by Suzanne Rushton on Unsplash Modern 'sustainable' innovations in architecture are failing to slow climate change, but revisiting ancient knowledge and techniques found in traditional architecture could offer better solutions. sustainable futureThis is the argument of architectural historians Professor Florian Urban and Barnabas Calder in their new book Form Follows Fuel: 14 Buildings from Antiquity to the Oil Age. The authors argue that energy availability has been the biggest influence in architecture throughout human history. How architecture can help a sustainable future Their extensive study is the first to calculate energy inputs for a range of historical buildings, demonstrating how different types of fuel, from human labour to fossil fuels, have fundamentally determined building designs across civilisations and eras. "The history of architecture can be told as a history of energy," the authors explain. "Today's architecture is accordingly the outcome of four centuries of effort, innovation and ingenuity directed at maximising the proportion of architectural production and operation that could be powered by fossil fuel heat." This argument comes at a critical moment in architectural history, as the building sector currently accounts for 37% of all human climate-changing emissions. Despite decades of research and discussion, the environmental impact of buildings continues to rise. Urban and Calder document how the shift to fossil fuels begins in the 17th century and transforms architecture more profoundly than any other development in human history. This transition reversed the previous dynamic, where labour was cheap and heat expensive, creating an architectural model which depended on energy-intensive materials and processes that reduced human input. "If form follows fuel, ours is fundamentally an architecture of intense fossil fuel consumption," the authors explain. Even as society becomes more aware of emissions and carbon footprint, and more efforts are made to build sustainably, the authors prove that today's architecture comes at a catastrophically high energy cost. They explain how globally influential minimalist designs often depend on massive energy consumption, for example, the Seagram Building in New York, widely praised for its simplicity, received an energy efficiency rating of just 3 out of 100 from the US Environmental Protection Agency, and cost more energy to build than the entire labour cost of quarrying, transporting and placing 5.5m tonnes of stone for the largest of the Egyptian pyramids. "Mies's famous dictum that 'less is more,' turns out to be missing a word: 'less is more carbon,'" the authors explain. "Per square meter of floor space, it used four times as much energy as the average American office building in 2012." By contrast, pre-modern buildings like the Scottish blackhouse achieved remarkable thermal efficiency using only local materials and passive design strategies. Examples of buildings like these show how humans have always before been able to provide the interior space and thermal comfort needed for survival in a harsh climate, while being fully sustainable and recyclable. The authors' studies span 4,500 years of architectural history, from the Great Pyramid of Giza to Kuala Lumpur International Airport. The authors offer practical solutions for contemporary architects by unpicking the specific energy costs of different building elements and materials. For instance, their research demonstrates how structural stone tenements used significantly less energy throughout their life cycle than similar brick buildings, providing quantifiable metrics to inform modern sustainable design decisions. Professor Urban says: "With regard to energy consumption, the world has never had so many pharaohs. Sabine Marcelis is a Rotterdam-based designer and artist who, in her own words, is ‘forever in search of magical moments within materials'. She's probably best known for her work in glass, resin and stone, which often plays with light and water. However, most recently, she has been part of R100, a project with Hydro, which asks a group of internationally renowned designers to create pieces from 100 per cent post-consumer aluminium, sourced and produced within a 100-kilometre radius. It will be shown at Material Matters Copenhagen at Gammel Dok, Christianshavn from 18-20 June. Over the years, Sabine has collaborated with brands such as Vitra, Renault and IKEA and won numerous awards, including Designer of the Year at the Dezeen Awards in 2024 and the Monocle magazine Designer of the Year in 2023.In this episode we talk about: working with Hydro's recycled aluminium; trying to find the limits of any project; not designing chairs; her relationship with resin and how best to use it; fountains; working in Mies' Barcelona Pavilion; learning from IKEA; growing up on a flower farm; snowboarding; fighting for her ideas in Eindhoven; never wanting to work for anyone else; forging her studio in Rotterdam; and finding inspiration in unexpected places. Material Matters with Sabine Marcelis is sponsored by 3daysofdesign.Support the show
