Travel to the forests outside the Grand Canyon to follow Dr. Sophina Calderon and other Navajo Nation leaders as covid-19 tests the Diné people. Roughly 30% of the homes on the Navajo Nation rely on wood-burning stoves for heat. Many of those households haul wood from nearby forests. That's what Calderon was doing when she realized the pandemic's reach wouldn't stop at the hospital — it was going to create a heating crisis too. This episode explores root causes behind why some citizens of the Navajo Nation lack access to electricity and other infrastructure, and how so-called social determinants of health made the Diné so vulnerable to the first surges of the pandemic.“American Diagnosis” is a co-production of KHN and Just Human Productions.

One hundred and fifty five people boarded US Airways Flight 1549 at La Guardia Airport New York on January 15th, 2009 destined for Charlotte, North Carolina. Those same one hundred and fifty five people left that aircraft in the middle of the Hudson River three and a half minutes after take off, and what transpired in between is remarkable. What is considered by many as the 'Miracle on the Hudson' is explained by my guest Emma Sophina. The only foreign national on that flight that day, Australian, Emma recalls the lifetime of memories that she lived before, during and after that day that has now made aviation history. Captain Sully Sullenberger has been applauded for what he achieved that day, in saving all of those lives, but it may also be his actions after the landing that will stay in the memories of many however.
