For a lot of us, professional footballer is the dream career. Would you agree?But say the contract is for £40K a year and a footballing career typically ends when you're in your 30s. You'll have to find another career sharpish. The decision to go pro is perhaps more complicated when you're just going to get a 'decent' wage - and maybe high-level part-time football (often pretty good money) is the better option.In that context, it was fascinating to speak to with Gloucester City midfielder Joe Hanks.The pain is still there after the club's PO final loss. I walked into a world of nostalgia recently. Fitszoo in Regent Arcade, Cheltenham is a store devoted to vintage fashion and, of particular excitement for me, old football shirts. I was surrounded by the shirts of my youth with the legends of the time blazoned on the back.I got chatting to Max Brown, the founder that day and was gutted to learn the store is soon shuttering - Max is relocating to London and planning open a Fitszoo there. My brother, Dr Max Draper was in a dark place six or seven years ago. Physically and mentally he was as low as you can go. At his nadir he felt like he didn't want to be here anymore.Remembering that time is painful for me and everyone else who loves Max. But there's a huge tale of hope that sprung from that low and it's in his rise back to health that Max charts in his book Testosterone Decoded. Max, then a GP in the North East of England had his health and T levels battered by a triple header of testicular cancer, meningitis and chronic stress. For a long time he didn't twig about the testosterone. When he did start testosterone replacement therapy his rise from the deepest doldrums was remarkably swift. In this story then there's a beacon of optimism for other men brought to their knees because of hormonal imbalance. I'm biased but I think Max's book is a brilliant breakdown of what testosterone is, what it gives men, what healthy levels should be and the options to get heathy again. There's also a frank look at TRT's downsides, including fertility issues and how potentially to mitigate those. It's a book that has enough science to educate medical practitioners and health professionals. But it is written in a simple and punchy way that won't lose the lay man. I'm proud of my bro for battling back from bleak ill health, for having the wherewithal to pivot careers, from General Practice into TRT specialist, whilst being a top dad to three young children. Kudos to his wife, Dr Katy Draper for her part in supporting this transformation too. I hope you enjoy the chat and I'd really appreciate you considering to buy this book. In the landscape of modern publishing, the “isolated author” is a dying breed. To succeed as an indie today, you don't just need a gripping story; you need a community. This past Friday, the Writing Community Chat Show (recently ranked #3 in the UK!) sat down with a man who has mastered this evolution: indie thriller author William Lee.Known for his dark, atmospheric mysteries and a rise on TikTok, William joined us to pull back the curtain on his process, his live streams, and the upcoming release of his second book.From Failing English to Crafting Thrillers.It's a story many of us can relate to: William didn't start out as a bookworm. In fact, he admittedly “badly failed” his mock exams in school. It wasn't until a wake-up call from his father that he dove into creative writing techniques, eventually picking up reading as a hobby after high school.That spark turned into a flame, and eighteen months later, he released his debut, Gone Before the Moon. What started as a “superhero” concept morphed into a gritty, supernatural series when William realized he preferred realistic, high-stakes tension over “red spandex.”The “Secret Sauce” of TikTok Live.While many authors view marketing as a chore, William has turned it into a cornerstone of his brand. He moved away from shouting “buy my book” into the void and instead leaned into the power of TikTok Live.Why it works for him:* The Personal Touch: He wraps orders, signs books, and adds extras like bookmarks and tea bags live on camera.* Royalties: Selling directly through TikTok Shop is often more beneficial for indie authors than the traditional Amazon cut.* Vulnerability: By showing his face and chatting about his day, he sells himself as a person, which naturally leads to people wanting to read his work.Overcoming the “Indie” Hurdles.William was incredibly candid about the struggles of the self-published path, particularly Imposter Syndrome. Even with five-star reviews calling his work “atmospheric” and “un-put-downable,” he admits to worrying if book two will live up to the hype.His advice for those “dragging their feet” on social media? Just start. The community is supportive, and being “consistent” is far more important than being “perfect.”What's Next: The Black Veil Files.Fans of the series won't have to wait long for more. William shared that he has a five-book arc planned for The Black Veil Files, with short stories and a prequel novella also in the works.The next instalment, Dragged into the Maw, is slated for a March or April 2026 release.
