In this jam-packed episode of Reading with Your Kids, host Jed Doherty had the pleasure of chatting with some fascinating authors about empowering young people to live their best lives. First up was Dr. Ran Anbar, a pediatric pulmonologist who discovered the incredible mind-body connection after working with a patient who could literally think himself into an asthma attack. This led Dr. Anbar on a journey to learn about the power of positive self-talk, inner wisdom, and tools like self-hypnosis.  He shares these insights in his book "The Life Guide for Teens: Harnessing Your Inner Power to be Healthy, Happy, and Confident." Dr. Anbar explains the five keys to a good life - sleep, exercise, diet, social connections, and finding purpose - and how teens can use positive thinking to achieve them. He even demonstrates the surprising physical effects of words, showing how saying "I'm strong" can actually make your arm more resistant to being pushed down. Next, Jed spoke with Wayne McDaniel about his beautifully illustrated children's book "Children of the Great Light." This non-denominational spiritual story teaches universal lessons about the divine light within all of us, and the importance of sharing our unique gifts to help others. Wayne is donating all profits to charities that support orphans and foster children, making this a truly heartwarming project. Finally, we take a listen back to a past interview Jed had  with Stenetta Anthony about her picture book "A Home for Sally," which follows the journey of a special needs puppy searching for a forever family. Stenetta was inspired to write this story after noticing a lack of representation for disabled animals in adoption campaigns, wanting to share a message of inclusion and belonging. This episode is a treasure trove of wisdom and positivity, perfect for parents looking to nurture the mental, physical and spiritual wellbeing of the young people in their lives. We are all unique and everyone is different. We possess wonderfully unique qualities that differentiate us from others. Some of us are dealing with disabilities that also make us different from others. Having a disability can be extremely challenging because of the way the outside world treats and views us. Today, Ashley is talking with Stenetta Anthony, author of "A Home for Sally" an authentic book that is opening the dialogue about disability and societal value placement. In this book, we look at the concept of disability with regard to Sally who is missing a paw. Sally is awaiting being adopted. As Sally awaits adoption, she watches how the other puppies that came in the adoption facility at the same time as her are all adopted except her. Eventually, Sally is adopted by a wonderful family who loves Sally. This book applies to the human experience of being disabled and how people stare, overlook, or ignore because of their own judgment, fear, or insecurities dealing with others. Sometimes people lack empathy and understanding because they haven't had to deal with something of this magnitude. Stenetta, a veteran educator, has been instilling solid ideals within all of her students for twenty plus years. Sally's story will warm your heart and articulates what we people go through with disabilities.

Tough Talk Christian Radio with Host Tony Gambone with special guest Stenetta Anthony and Denise Fawcett Facey: Stenetta Anthony resides in Chicago, Illinois with her husband, children and grandchildren. She is a native Chicagoan, who loves living in the big city. She is the eldest of four children, who always loved reading. Stenetta is a graduate of Grand Canyon University, where she studied education; acquiring a B.S. in Educational Leadership. During her time in college one of the classes she most enjoyed was creative writing. Taking these classes further increase Stenetta’s ability to utilize her image more affectingly, therefore making her a more efficient writer. Denise Fawcett Facey is an educator, author, blogger, leader of professional development workshops — all of it centered around making education fun for students. Why settle for routine and boring when learning can spark creativity, exploration and just plain fun? What I enjoyed most about teaching was developing my students' love for the same subjects I enjoyed learning. Making otherwise tedious content become vibrant and engaging was my idea of a good time. My reward was watching that mixture of recognition and joy spread across the face of a student who suddenly "got it," hearing animated voices raised in hot debate or gleeful collaboration, and repeatedly receiving the question “What are we doing today?” asked with genuine excitement. I love that! Now I get to share the best of what I've learned along the way through my writings and workshops.
