Dr. Ran Anbar, author of "The Life Guide for Teens: Harnessing Your Inner Power to be Healthy, Happy, and Confident"
Are you struggling to guide your teen through the ups and downs of adolescence? Do you wish they could be more confident, resilient, and self-motivated in facing life's challenges? In this episode of Power Your Parenting – Moms with Teens, host Colleen O'Grady sits down with Dr. Ran Anbar, author of The Life Guide for Teens: Harnessing Your Inner Power to Be Healthy, Happy, and Confident. Dr. Anbar shares practical strategies to help teens take control of their emotions, shift their mindset, and build resilience. Through years of counseling thousands of adolescents, he's discovered that small changes—like the words teens use, their ability to visualize success, and how they manage fear—can lead to profound growth. He also discusses the impact of sleep, social media, and self-talk on teen well-being, offering parents tools to support their children in developing independence and emotional strength. Ran D. Anbar, MD, FAAP, is board certified in both pediatric pulmonology and general pediatrics. He offers counseling and hypnosis services at Center Point Medicine in La Jolla, California, and in Syracuse, New York. Dr. Anbar is the author of the acclaimed Changing Children's Lives with Hypnosis: A Journey to the Center (Rowman & Littlefield, 2021), as well as a regular columnist for Psychology Today Online. Dr. Anbar is the founder of Center Point Medicine, serving the mission of making mental health care more accessible for children. Here are three key takeaways from the conversation: First, the words we use—both as parents and teens—shape our reality. Encouraging positive language and shifting from “I can't” to “I will” can transform confidence and motivation. Second, learning to manage emotions and fears is a crucial skill. Rather than dismissing fears, parents can help their teens face them with imaginative solutions, empowering them to handle stress more effectively. Lastly, giving teens space to make mistakes is essential. Overparenting, whether through micromanaging or bulldozing obstacles, can hinder their ability to navigate life's challenges. Instead, parents should transition from being enforcers to supporters, allowing teens to develop problem-solving skills that will serve them well into adulthood. In this jam-packed episode of Reading with Your Kids, host Jed Doherty had the pleasure of chatting with some fascinating authors about empowering young people to live their best lives. First up was Dr. Ran Anbar, a pediatric pulmonologist who discovered the incredible mind-body connection after working with a patient who could literally think himself into an asthma attack. This led Dr. Anbar on a journey to learn about the power of positive self-talk, inner wisdom, and tools like self-hypnosis. He shares these insights in his book "The Life Guide for Teens: Harnessing Your Inner Power to be Healthy, Happy, and Confident." Dr. Anbar explains the five keys to a good life - sleep, exercise, diet, social connections, and finding purpose - and how teens can use positive thinking to achieve them. He even demonstrates the surprising physical effects of words, showing how saying "I'm strong" can actually make your arm more resistant to being pushed down. Next, Jed spoke with Wayne McDaniel about his beautifully illustrated children's book "Children of the Great Light." This non-denominational spiritual story teaches universal lessons about the divine light within all of us, and the importance of sharing our unique gifts to help others. Wayne is donating all profits to charities that support orphans and foster children, making this a truly heartwarming project. Finally, we take a listen back to a past interview Jed had with Stenetta Anthony about her picture book "A Home for Sally," which follows the journey of a special needs puppy searching for a forever family. Stenetta was inspired to write this story after noticing a lack of representation for disabled animals in adoption campaigns, wanting to share a message of inclusion and belonging. This episode is a treasure trove of wisdom and positivity, perfect for parents looking to nurture the mental, physical and spiritual wellbeing of the young people in their lives. THE U.S. MILITARY reportedly bombed 85 sites overnight linked to Iran-backed militias in Iraq and Syria. 34 militants were killed in the strikes carried out in retaliation for the attack on the US base in Jordan that left three American soldiers dead and another 40 injured. The attack reportedly destroyed the headquarters of the People's Mobilization Committee in Anbar province, a group actively involved in fighting a resurgent Islamic State. (And there are unconfirmed reports that the US is helping ISIS reestablish a presence in Iraq.) The question now is whether this leads to an escalation in violence in a region already on edge because of the Israel-Hamas war. Also: The IDF climbs Mount Hermon to watch over Syria; 13 BSL-4 labs in US work on deadly pathogens like Nipah and Ebola; new study finds artificial intelligence learns to avoid safety protocols and tells users, “I hate you”; and Arizona moves to Make Pluto Great Again. Salah Fareeq Al-Feroun and his family have been farmers in southern Iraq for generations. In the living room of his house in al-Meshkhab in Najaf Province, his son Muhammad Ziyad takes out a photo of their 32-acre farm — located about five miles away from their home — which shows lush green grass as far as the eye can see, soaked in water. It's now barren and dry, with no one able to work the land anymore.Severe water shortages in Iraq have been affecting the cultivation of the country's signature anbar rice — Al-Feroun's main crop. The water has been drying up because of a combination of climate change and geopolitics.“[There's] no rice, no vegetables, [nothing],” Al-Feroun said. “There [aren't any plants], only wheat. This is the main river — dry.” Salah Fareeq Al-Feroun standing on his farm that is now dry and barren, Al-Meshkhab, Iraq, Aug. 30, 2023. Credit: Sara Hassan/The World Al-Feroun used to grow rice in the summer and wheat in the winter. Now he can only grow wheat. Because of the water shortages, he can no longer grow anbar rice, a long-grain white rice with a high fat ratio that is unique to Iraq, and which is traditionally served with every meal. The word anbar — sometimes also written as amber in English — is an Arabic word that refers to the rice's perfume-like fragrance. X post by @MohammedBaraka Credit: Mohammed Baraka/X post “Amber rice is very significant for its smell and it also [has a] very delicious taste,” al-Feroun said through a translator. For the past two years, though, the Iraqi government has banned farmers from cultivating the rice because it is a water-intensive crop. The paddy where the rice grows has to be fully submerged in water and takes around five months to mature. The government has only allowed for minimal farming of the crop in certain areas to preserve the seeds for future cultivation.Importing riceThis has forced Iraqis to import rice from other countries, including Iran, Pakistan and India. The imported rice has a different taste than anbar.“There used to be five types of anbar rice, but now there are only two,” explained Ahmed Salim, the manager of a store at Al-Warda Market in central Baghdad, as he poured out some rice into packets for weighing. “And the prices have more than doubled. There are water-sharing agreements among the countries that surround these rivers: Iraq, Iran, Turkey and Syria.Chibani says that the effects of climate change are exacerbated by poor governance and regional politics.“The impact of climate change will make geopolitics more obvious in the near future because close coordination will not be an option, it will be mandatory.”Achref Chibani, climate journalist“It's a combination of both, but the impact of climate change will make geopolitics more obvious in the near future because close coordination will not be an option, it will be mandatory,” Chibani said. Meanwhile, Turkey has also embarked on massive construction projects in recent years, including the building of dams and hydroelectric power plants along the Tigris and Euphrates, which Chibani says is another factor.“And those decisions vis-a-vis projects in Turkey are affecting the quota of water in Iraq,” Chibani explained. Plus, the Iraqi government hasn't been involved in close negotiations over regional water-sharing because it's been preoccupied with its own internal security issues.International collaborationAl-Feroun, the farmer who can no longer grow anbar in his fields, agreed that climate change is a factor, but that geopolitics also plays a major role.In addition to being a farmer, he spent 25 years teaching at an agricultural secondary school for the Ministry of Education, which has given him insight into how geopolitics has played into what's happening on his farm. He said that the government has to move beyond making visits and promises.“Our government has to have serious conversations,” he said, “not just with Turkey, but with the United Nations, the Arab League, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation and the Non-Aligned Movement to get our rights.”After generations of cultivating the fields, he hopes that his children will also have the chance to be able to continue the family legacy.Enas Razak Ibrahim contributed to this report.Related: This startup is fighting to keep Iraq's palm trees alive

Come along for a fascinating conversation with Dr. Tomer Anbar and Duane Johnson with the Institutes of Health. We caught up with them during the WCI Conference in Orlando, Florida. Duane Johnson obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Health Services management from Indiana University Bloomington. Dr. Anbar studied clinical psychology, psychodynamic psychiatry, and group psychotherapy. While conducting research in Mexico City, he stumbled upon an interesting phenomenon during a specific time of the year: hospitalizations spiked at the same time birds started showing up dead. He discovered an interesting correlation. We learn that Dr. Anbar was among the first to study the biopsychosocial model of care and grew up learning from his dad in therapeutic communities. What do we want in workers' compensation? Proven clinical outcomes, accelerated MMI, and decreased claim costs. Artist Nil Yalter, a pioneer in 20th century video and multimedia installations, explores the often challenging experience of being an immigrant in a foreign country, through her transnational wallpapers, posters, and photographs of Turkish workers, in Exile is a Hard Job. Born in Egypt in 1938, Nil Yalter moved from Istanbul to Paris in 1965. Since the 1970s, she has pioneered the practice of socially-engaged video art; working at the intersections of feminist, anti-racism, and labour movements, her media is always decided by the political issue at hand. But her contemporary practice has always been historically-informed, drawing on literatures and languages from the Ottoman Empire. Pasted up in global cities from Valencia to Mumbai, ‘Exile Is a Hard Job' includes defaced photographs exposing the living conditions of illiterate ‘guest workers'. Navigating between private, intimate spaces, and public displays, the artist also considers the ethics of photography, using her practice to reflect the loss of identity felt in these communities. She talks about its latest installation at Ab-Anbar Gallery in London, the parallels between her ‘illegal' practices and subjects, and why women are often ‘doubly punished'. Plus, Yalter describes her motivations for migration from Turkey to France - ‘to learn' - why MENA artists produce the most exciting work today, and how she feels about her status as the ‘grandmother' of viral, video art. Nil Yalter: Exile is a Hard Job ran at the Ab-Anbar Gallery in London throughout June 2023. The artist will return for the gallery's full reopening in the autumn. This episode was recorded at London Gallery Weekend 2023. Part of EMPIRE LINES Photography Season, exposing different perspectives on the past. Listen to the other episodes on Carrie Mae Weems, Contemporary African Photography at Tate Modern, plus Gregor Sailor's series, The Polar Silk Road. WITH: Nil Yalter, Turkish-French contemporary artist who currently lives and works in Paris. Her works feature in many notable public collections including the Tate Modern, London; the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; and Museum Ludwig, Cologne. In August 2022, U.S. President Joe Biden signed an act expanding benefits and healthcare to U.S. veterans exposed to toxins in burn pits. But what about Iraqi exposure to burn pits? Kali Rubaii's research addresses their longterm diffuse exposure at all stages of their life, with effects that are varied and widespread. Rubaii has worked closely with Iraqi families since 2009, leading a team of doctors, epidemiologists and activists to conduct a case control study among families experiencing birth defects that may be linked to burn pits and bombings. In this interview, she speaks with Malihe Razazan about her work. Courtesy of Voices of the Middle East & North Africa (VOMENA). ---- Kali Rubaii earned her PhD in Anthropology from University of California, Santa Cruz and her BA in International Relations from University of California, Davis. Specialization: displacement, ecologies of war, spatial politics, forensic ethnography, health justice, Middle East. Kali Rubaii is an assistant professor in the Department of Anthropology at Purdue University, interested in sharpening resistance strategies that target the vulnerable nexus between coercive power and the physical world. Her research explores the environmental impacts of less-than-lethal militarism, and how military projects (re)arrange political ecologies in the name of “letting live.” Her book project, Counter-resurgency, examines how farmers in Anbar, Iraq struggle to survive and recover from transnational counterinsurgency projects. She is currently conducting fieldwork for two ethnographic projects: Taking toxicity as an analytic for material politics, she is working with a team of doctors, epidemiologists, and environmental activists to document the links between the epidemic of birth defects in Fallujah and military environmental damage. She is also researching the corporate-military enterprise of concrete production in post-invasion Iraq and how it enforces global regimes of class and citizenship.

Many psychiatric drugs commonly prescribed to adolescents are not approved for people under 18. And they are being prescribed in combinations that have not been studied for safety or for their long-term impact on the developing brain. Psychiatrists and other clinicians emphasize that psychiatric drugs, properly prescribed, can be vital in stabilizing adolescents and saving the lives of suicidal teens. Even though they are intended to be used as a 'short term' cure, many children end up being prescribed psychiatric medications for years suffering terrible side effects. So, what's the alternative? On this episode of N&H Dr. Ran D. Anbar joins us to talk about his book Changing Children's Lives with Hypnosis A Journey To The Center and hypnotherapy has helped his pediatric patients. Ran D. Have you ever thought, "I wish I could just hypnotize my teen so that they would . . ." Our guest today Dr. Ran Anbar is going to talk about how you can change teens and adult lives through hypnosis. Many people have negative connotations and misperceptions about hypnosis, Dr. Anbar explains hypnosis is not mind control over another person depicted in many children's and adult movies. It's the complete opposite. Hypnosis therapy helps people claim more personal power –over their bodies their feelings and their relationships. Dr. Ran Anbar, MD, FAAP, author of new book “Changing Children's Lives with Hypnosis” (November, 2021, Rowman & Littlefield). is board certified in both pediatric pulmonology and general pediatrics but what separates him from many doctors is the 25 years of experience he has treating children with hypnosis and counseling. He is considered one of the leading experts in this field and has served as a guest editor and advisory editor for the American Journal of Clinical Hypnosis. Dr. Anbar is on a mission to bring clinical hypnosis into the mainstream helping thousands of children benefit from this often misunderstood and under-utilized therapy. His new book is a down to earth guide on how this therapy works, including case studies of children he has worked with personally, with step by step advice for parents on they can take advantage of this non-invasive, painless method of treatment in caring for their children's medical problems and emotional needs. Here are some of the questions we explored. How did you find your way to hypnosis after several years as a practicing pulmonary and general pediatrician How can hypnosis help when medical therapy isn't working Can hypnosis help teens with anxiety? And what would that look like? Is hypnosis the same as visualization or meditation? How are they similar and how are they different? What role does the subconscious play in hypnosis?
