Matt Crawford speaks with Dr. Ran Anbar about his book, The Life Guide for Teens: The Life Guide for Teens: Harnessing Your Inner Power to be Healthy, Happy, and Confident. Today's generation of teenagers are living in a world no one could have imagined just a couple decades ago, a world of social media and an endless flow of information (and disinformation). They are also more likely to be lonely, depressed, stressed out, and diagnosed with mental health issues than any generation before them. But they can learn to take control of their own wellness—and Dr. Ran Anbar gives them the tools to do just that. In The Life Guide for Teens: Harnessing Your Inner Power to be Healthy, Happy, and Confident, Dr. Anbar uses clear, empowering terms to take a deep dive into the most prevalent wellness concerns for teens. He guides readers through such topics as anxiety, relationships, sleep, making tough decisions, and communicating effectively with easy-to-implement tools and advice from experts and teens who've been there. Throughout, he offers encouragement, reassurance, and strength to teens who are struggling, showing them how they can develop a positive, healthy self-image and promote self-care. Dr. Anbar has helped thousands of teens work through their personal challenges, not by solving their problems for them, but by helping them learn to tap into their inner wisdom, strength, and resilience. With 180 actionable tools teens can use on their personal journey to wellness, The Life Guide for Teens is an invaluable resource for anyone wanting to feel calm, capable, and confident.

Are you struggling to guide your teen through the ups and downs of adolescence? Do you wish they could be more confident, resilient, and self-motivated in facing life's challenges? In this episode of Power Your Parenting – Moms with Teens, host Colleen O'Grady sits down with Dr. Ran Anbar, author of The Life Guide for Teens: Harnessing Your Inner Power to Be Healthy, Happy, and Confident. Dr. Anbar shares practical strategies to help teens take control of their emotions, shift their mindset, and build resilience. Through years of counseling thousands of adolescents, he's discovered that small changes—like the words teens use, their ability to visualize success, and how they manage fear—can lead to profound growth. He also discusses the impact of sleep, social media, and self-talk on teen well-being, offering parents tools to support their children in developing independence and emotional strength. Ran D. Anbar, MD, FAAP, is board certified in both pediatric pulmonology and general pediatrics. He offers counseling and hypnosis services at Center Point Medicine in La Jolla, California, and in Syracuse, New York. Dr. Anbar is the author of the acclaimed Changing Children's Lives with Hypnosis: A Journey to the Center (Rowman & Littlefield, 2021), as well as a regular columnist for Psychology Today Online. Dr. Anbar is the founder of Center Point Medicine, serving the mission of making mental health care more accessible for children. Here are three key takeaways from the conversation: First, the words we use—both as parents and teens—shape our reality. Encouraging positive language and shifting from “I can't” to “I will” can transform confidence and motivation. Second, learning to manage emotions and fears is a crucial skill. Rather than dismissing fears, parents can help their teens face them with imaginative solutions, empowering them to handle stress more effectively. Lastly, giving teens space to make mistakes is essential. Overparenting, whether through micromanaging or bulldozing obstacles, can hinder their ability to navigate life's challenges. Instead, parents should transition from being enforcers to supporters, allowing teens to develop problem-solving skills that will serve them well into adulthood. In this jam-packed episode of Reading with Your Kids, host Jed Doherty had the pleasure of chatting with some fascinating authors about empowering young people to live their best lives. First up was Dr. Ran Anbar, a pediatric pulmonologist who discovered the incredible mind-body connection after working with a patient who could literally think himself into an asthma attack. This led Dr. Anbar on a journey to learn about the power of positive self-talk, inner wisdom, and tools like self-hypnosis.  He shares these insights in his book "The Life Guide for Teens: Harnessing Your Inner Power to be Healthy, Happy, and Confident." Dr. Anbar explains the five keys to a good life - sleep, exercise, diet, social connections, and finding purpose - and how teens can use positive thinking to achieve them. He even demonstrates the surprising physical effects of words, showing how saying "I'm strong" can actually make your arm more resistant to being pushed down. Next, Jed spoke with Wayne McDaniel about his beautifully illustrated children's book "Children of the Great Light." This non-denominational spiritual story teaches universal lessons about the divine light within all of us, and the importance of sharing our unique gifts to help others. Wayne is donating all profits to charities that support orphans and foster children, making this a truly heartwarming project. Finally, we take a listen back to a past interview Jed had  with Stenetta Anthony about her picture book "A Home for Sally," which follows the journey of a special needs puppy searching for a forever family. Stenetta was inspired to write this story after noticing a lack of representation for disabled animals in adoption campaigns, wanting to share a message of inclusion and belonging. This episode is a treasure trove of wisdom and positivity, perfect for parents looking to nurture the mental, physical and spiritual wellbeing of the young people in their lives. Patty Ivey on Getting Breast Cancer at Age 70 and How It's Changing What She Can Give Back to the World

Gap Year For Grown-Ups

Today Debbie talks to Patty Ivey about life changes and opportunities opening up for her after being diagnosed with and treated for breast cancer last year. Inspiring doesn't really cover it as a way to describe Patty. Neither does [b]old, as in [B]OLD AGE. Patty and Debbie go back at least 15 years, when Debbie was a regular at Patty's Down Dog yoga studio in DC. It was always special when Patty, the owner, taught a class. Her classes were different. They offered all the benefits that practicing yoga offers beyond what happens on the mat; with Patty teaching, the class was mind-expanding. She made yoga open up new possibilities for how to live. So when Debbie saw Patty posting beautiful, bald photos of herself on her LinkedIn page, she immediately got in touch to find out how she was doing. As Patty explains it, she is using life principles from yoga, which include leaving room for what we don't know and focusing on something bigger than ourselves, as she looks ahead.  She acknowledges an identity shift that has come with cancer. Some older version of herself is no longer there, but she's okay with that. Like most women, Debbie is terrified of getting breast cancer, but with Patty as a guide (she's also a mentor and a life coach as well as being a serial entrepreneur), it seems there could be an upside. We hope you are as inspired by this conversation as Debbie was.  //////////Don't miss the Behind The Scenes  for every podcast episode in Debbie's [B]OLD AGE newsletter on Substack.////////// Mentioned in this episode or useful:Patty's website: https://thepattyivey.com/Patty on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/pattyiveyHer studio in DC: https://www.downdogyoga.com/Her yoga teacher Baron Baptiste: https://www.baptisteyoga.com/Connect with Debbie:debbieweil.com[B]OLD AGE podcast[B]OLD AGE newsletter on SubstackEmail: thebolderpodcast@gmail.comDebbie and Sam's blog: Gap Year After SixtyFacebook: @debbieweilInstagram: @debbieweilLinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/debbieweil Our Media Partners:CoGenerate (formerly Encore.org)MEA and with thanks to Chip ConleyNext For Me (former media partner and in memory of Jeff Tidwell) How to Support this podcast:Leave a review on Apple PodcastsSubscribe via Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Stitcher or Spotify Credits:Host: Debbie WeilProducer: Far Out MediaMusic: Lakeside Path by Duck Lake

Laurie Rivers is a fascinating guest with a deep understanding of metaphysics and astrology. As a self-taught entrepreneur, Laurie has been studying astrology since 1995 and possesses over three decades of professional astrological consultative experience. Growing up in a small town in Oregon, Laurie felt like she didn't fit in, which led her to buy a one-way ticket to England at the age of 18 to pursue her education. She graduated as an international relations major and subsequently worked for various companies worldwide. However, despite her success, Laurie felt unfulfilled and sought answers to life's mysteries. This quest led her to discover astrology through a detailed 20-page chart that revealed personal insights no one else could have known. Recognizing astrology as a form of data science for understanding human nature, she delved deeper into the subject and studied strength-based resilience models. Laurie currently offers astro-guides and has four apprentices under her guidance. She teaches group classes and provides personalized one-on-one consultations. Emphasizing the importance of seeking guidance from an astrologer rather than relying on self-diagnosis, Laurie highlights the significance of astrological insights. While living in Washington, Laurie found that metaphysical practices were not widely accepted. However, she discovered a sense of belonging in California, where she started WokeAstrology.com. During the pandemic, Laurie helped many young individuals who questioned their choices and self-worth, guiding them to understand that their struggles were not their fault.   What You'll Learn: What the ABC's of astrology are. The New York Times called him “the original bad boy of history” and tales of his conquests have inspired shock and awe for much of the last millennium. During his reign as Khan of the vast Mongol empire, as many as 40 million people were killed. That's roughly 11 percent of the world population at the time. He showed no mercy to his enemies, wiping them out by the millions, sometimes slaughtering every man, woman, and child in the cities he conquered. But was he a bloodthirsty madman or an ingenious diplomat? Did you know that despite all the killing, Genghis Khan's empire was far more civil than the rest of the world? Let's fix that.
