Counting Sand
How Can Computer Science Improve Life?

Counting Sand

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 2, 2021 32:20

On the most recent episode, host Angelo Kastroulis made a case computer science as a potential force for good. In this continuation of the theme, he talks about why excellence is a value to strive toward and how it differs from perfection, how simplifying the question can lead to a more valuable answer, and how questions about personalized medicine point to the potential for quantum to make big improvements to life.Angelo begins with a revelation that excellence is value that he holds dear. He distinguishes “quality”—which he defines as some standard that you're measuring yourself or others against to try to compare to similar things—and “excellence,” which means being outstanding or extremely good when compared with peers. He cautions against striving for perfection, as the benefit rarely exceeds the cost of the pursuit of perfection. This spurs musings about the limits to continuous improvement and how to balance costs and quality. He illustrates this through the example of parsing JSON and rest servers and asks how, instead of micro-optimizing a solution we might go about eliminating serialization completely. Ultimately, he posits that the single most important factor that delineates a mediocre developer from a phenomenal developer is the ability of the latter to step away from the decades-old tendency to meet requirements and instead find ways to rethink the problem space, eliminating limitations at the onset rather than mitigating later. Relatedly, he contends that attainable smaller goals are far more valuable than ones that are very, very lofty and unreachable because we can achieve those small goals.Angelo recounts part of a conversation he had with Kerri Patterson, Chief Strategy Officer at Carrera, on the importance of solving really hard problems and how they can impact our lives. She spoke about how most healthcare data systems are set up based on insurance rules, not patient outcomes and needs. She suggests incorporating quantum computing into clinical decision support and, ultimately, personalized medicine. This is taste of conversations that will appear in more detail later in the series.Angelo concludes this episode with a brief discussion of what machine learning is, how its two main categories—unsupervised and supervised learning—differ, and how these concepts will fuel much of the content in the upcoming episodes of Counting Sand. About the HostAngelo Kastroulis is an award-winning technologist, inventor, entrepreneur, speaker, data scientist, and author best known for his high-performance computing and Health IT experience. He is the principal consultant, lead architect, and owner ofCarrera Group, a consulting firm specializing in software modernization, event streaming (Kafka), big data, analytics (Spark, elastic Search, and Graph), and high-performance software development on many technical stacks (Java, .net, Scala, C++, and Rust). A Data Scientist at heart, trained at the Harvard Data Systems Lab, Angelo enjoys a research-driven approach to creating powerful, massively scalable applications and innovating new methods for superior performance. He loves to educate, discover, then see the knowledge through to practical implementation. CitationsBruce, V., and Young, A. (1986). Understanding face recognition. As October is ADHD awareness month, I'm sharing my ADHD journey so far, what I've learned since getting my diagnoses aged 40, just 12 Months ago and what I feel we should all know as parents, teachers, partners and members of our wonderful globe! ADHD Takeaways  1.The brain isn't fully understood, we are all learning and developing all of the time2.What is normal, there are no two humans the same, even identical twins have different fingerprints 3.Dyslexia can be paired with ADHD 4.OCD Is commonly paired with ADHD 5.ADAHD'S are highly creative, they can be inventive thinkers, they often think very differently. Big companies actively seek neurodiverse creatives 6.Family members will say ‘oh it's the latest trend, answer by saying its only the same as giving someone glasses or a walking stick if they get diagnosed! 7. ADHD in girls is harder to pick up because they learn very young age to mimic others which masks any blocks and struggles. 8.ADHD does run in the family 9.We get used to struggle, get tested if you're wondering you will be helping your family if you won't think of yourself! Today we are discussing the topic of Vulnerability at Work.  Practicing vulnerability is not only about sharing personal information and your feelings - employees display vulnerability every time they bring up a new idea in a meeting or challenge an old way of thinking.  Leaders practice vulnerability when they say "I don't know" or "I'm sorry" or make space for their team to give them feedback.  Learn why these "moments of vulnerability" are proven to accelerate trust and connection, and why that accelerates the performance of people at work.   WHO JOINED US IN THE LIVING ROOM TODAY? Joining us for this conversation is Andy Nelson, a two-time Stage 4 Cancer survivor, business leader, executive coach, husband and father.  Throughout his life he has learned the power of vulnerability and has experienced the impact of it in both the workplace and his life. We hope you enjoy this wholehearted conversation where we not only define and discuss vulnerability at work, but practice it ourselves.   SHOW NOTES & REFERENCES Archana Patchirajan, HBR Article, told to Emma Seppala, 2014.)  https://hbr.org/2014/12/what-bosses-gain-by-being-vulnerable   Readings & articles referred to during Andy's cancer story: Greg Boyle  Henri Nouwen De Mello Tippett   "Vulnerability is the birthplace of innovation, trust and engagement,"  - Brené Brown, TED2012.    Subscribe to this podcast @ www.TheLeadershipLivingRoom.com Watch this Episode on Youtube at https://youtu.be/fIu85tSfFTY Learn More About Us!  Visit our website www.thepeopleside.com or Follow The People Side on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/the-people-side QUESTIONS or COMMENTS?  Let's talk!  info@thepeopleside.com

Robot Quadrotors Perform James Bond Theme

See how this video was made: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OfxS6... Flying robot quadrotors perform the James Bond Theme by playing various instruments including the keyboard, drums and maracas, a cymbal, and the debut of an adapted guitar built from a couch frame. The quadrotors play this "couch guitar" by flying over guitar strings stretched across a couch frame; plucking the strings with a stiff wire attached to the base of the quadrotor. A special microphone attached to the frame records the notes made by the "couch guitar". These flying quadrotors are completely autonomous, meaning humans are not controlling them; rather they are controlled by a computer programed with instructions to play the instruments. Penn's School of Engineering and Applied Science is home to some of the most innovative robotics research on the planet, much of it coming out of the General Robotics, Automation, Sensing and Perception (GRASP) Lab. This video premiered at the TED2012 Conference in Long Beach, California on February 29, 2012. Deputy Dean for Education and GRASP lab member Vijay Kumar presented some of this groundbreaking work at the TED2012 conference, an international gathering of people and ideas from technology, entertainment, and design. The engineers from Penn, Daniel Mellinger and Alex Kushleyev, have formed a company called KMel Robotics that will design and market these quadrotors.
