We started #ANGELS (“Hashtag Angels”) six years ago as an investment collective to collaborate, pool our expertise and networks, and learn and grow as investors together. Over the years, we've often been asked the collective model and how it works. On today's episode, Jess dives into this topic with the TLC investment collective, to learn from co-founders Terri Burns, Lauren Stephanian, and Casey Caruso. TLC was started in early 2020, and just one year in they've made 11 investments and designed a robust set of processes for tracking deals, evaluating founders, and writing investment memos. Terri, Lauren, and Casey each have technical backgrounds and pride themselves on “making and breaking” alongside founders. The best way to learn about NFTs? Why not design and drop one? To learn in public, they open sourced their investment memo for one of their first deals, Watershed Informatics. We talk about each of their paths into venture, where Terri is a partner at GV, Lauren is a principal at Pantera Capital, and Casey works part time as an advisor to Bessemer while also a full time engineer at Google working on research systems. Terri Burns is a Principal at GV (Google Ventures), working on the investing team with sourcing and deal flow. Terri’s also on the fundraising team of the nonprofit All Raise, which aims to increase the diversity of funders and founders in the technology industry. She’s a board member of the nonprofit Brave Initiatives, which teaches coding skills to girls from underserved geographic and economic communities. Prior to joining GV, Terri was a product manager at Twitter where she helped improve the home timeline, and prior to that, a developer evangelist at Venmo. Terri is also an international speaker, covering topics related to how technology impacts various communities. In addition, Terri is a freelance writer, and regularly writes about technology, diversity, and inclusion, having been featured in publications like Forbes, Fast Company, Scientific American, and Teen Vogue. Terri graduated from the NYU Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences (computer science).

Terri Burns is an associate product manager at Twitter. After being bored with general classed when she first got to college, Terri applied for a student program with Google and discovered the world of startups and development. She started to teach herself how to code online before changing her major to computer science. Terri was also the President and is currently the Chair for Tech@NYU. Terri has since taken on new challenges - like being a Developer Evangelist for Venmo, the co-host of the Forbes podcast Well Technically, and now as an Associate Product Manager at Twitter. Terri joins us to share her story, how she got into coding and tech startups, what it was like being a part of Tech@NYU, how she got into Twitter, and much more!
