Got Truth? Rethinking Dairy, Calcium, and Bone Health

The Doctor's Farmacy with Mark Hyman, M.D.

Milk has long been sold as the key to strong bones, but research challenges that claim: many people don't tolerate dairy, calcium needs are lower than advertised, and higher milk intake doesn't necessarily prevent fractures. Politics and industry marketing helped set “three glasses a day,” even though healthy bones depend more on overall diet and lifestyle—things like vitamin D, movement, and avoiding soda, excess sugar, and stress that drive calcium loss. Dairy may be helpful for some diets, but it can also trigger bloating, acne, congestion, or digestive issues. The good news is that strong bones and good nutrition are still very doable without cow's milk—think leafy greens, sardines, almonds, chia, and sunshine for vitamin D. In this episode, I discuss, along with Dr. David Ludwig and Dr. Elizabeth Boham why bone health depends more on diet, lifestyle, and nutrient balance than on dairy. David S. Ludwig, MD, PhD, is an endocrinologist and researcher at Boston Children's Hospital, Professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School, and Professor of Nutrition at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. He co-directs the New Balance Foundation Obesity Prevention Center and founded the Optimal Weight for Life (OWL) program, one of the nation's largest clinics for children with obesity. For over 25 years, Dr. Ludwig has studied how diet composition affects metabolism, body weight, and chronic disease risk, focusing on low glycemic index, low-carbohydrate, and ketogenic diets. Called an “obesity warrior” by Time Magazine, he has championed policy changes to improve the food environment. A Principal Investigator on numerous NIH and philanthropic grants, Dr. Ludwig has published over 200 scientific articles and three books for the public, including the #1 New York Times bestseller Always, Hungry? Dr. Elizabeth Boham is Board Certified in Family Medicine from Albany Medical School, and she is an Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner and the Medical Director of The UltraWellness Center. Dr. Boham lectures on a variety of topics, including Women's Health and Breast Cancer Prevention, insulin resistance, heart health, weight control and allergies. Dr. Carole Lieberman is a board-certified Beverly Hills psychiatrist, author, and media personality who specializes in forensic psychiatry and media psychiatry.    Education and training M.D.: She received her medical degree from the Université Catholique de Louvain in 1975. M.P.H.: She earned a Master's of Public Health from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Residency: Lieberman was Chief Resident in Psychiatry at NYU-Bellevue. Clinical Faculty: She has been a member of the clinical faculty in UCLA's Department of Psychiatry for many years. Other Training: She studied at the Anna Freud Hampstead Clinic and the Institute of Psychiatry/Maudsley Hospital in London.    Career and notable work Forensic Psychiatrist: With over 20 years of experience, she works as a forensic psychiatrist and expert witness on hundreds of civil and criminal cases nationwide, including high-profile cases like the Jenny Jones Talk Show murder trial and celebrity divorces. Media Personality: An Emmy-honored media personality, Lieberman frequently provides psychiatric expertise on news and talk shows such as Oprah and the Today Show, and hosts a radio show and podcast. Author: She is an award-winning author of several books, including Bad Boys, Bad Girls, and Lions and Tigers and Terrorists, Oh My!. Activism: She has testified before Congress multiple times to advocate for mental health awareness in the media. Hollywood Consultant: She has worked as a psychiatric script consultant for soap operas like The Young and the Restless.    Controversies Analyzing Public Figures: Dr. Lieberman has faced criticism for providing analyses of public figures she has not personally met, which goes against the American Psychiatric Association's "Goldwater Rule". Criticism from UCLA: An article in Shockya raised questions about the use of psychiatric evaluations by UCLA-trained psychiatrists, including Lieberman, to potentially discredit individuals who challenge established interests. Video Game Controversy: In 2011, she suggested that video games contribute to aggression and sexual assault.      SOCIAL MEDIA EXPLOITATION – HOW IT WORKS Social media platforms exploit and manipulate psychological mechanisms to drive excessive engagement, often at the expense of users' mental well-being. While Dr. Carole Lieberman has not specified a distinct list of mechanisms, her public stance as a "Media Psychiatrist" aligns with a recognized set of issues identified by mental health professionals, researchers, and tech critics.  Key psychological mechanisms that make social media platforms harmful include: The variable reward system Social media platforms use an intermittent, variable reward schedule similar to that of a slot machine.  The dopamine hit: Each notification, "like," or share is a potential reward that triggers a release of dopamine, a neurotransmitter in the brain's reward pathway. The unpredictability factor: Since users don't know when they will receive a reward, they are incentivized to keep scrolling and checking for updates. The unpredictability of the reward makes the platforms highly addictive.  Social comparison and curated reality Social media platforms present a distorted view of others' lives, leading to a constant and often unhealthy process of comparison.  The "highlight reel": Users primarily post curated, idealized versions of their lives, showcasing achievements, vacations, and happy moments. Feelings of inadequacy: When a user's unfiltered reality is constantly compared to the polished "highlight reel" of others, it can create feelings of low self-esteem, envy, and inadequacy. Filters and altered self-perception: The pervasive use of filters on images and videos further promotes unrealistic beauty standards, which can lead to body dissatisfaction and a disconnect from one's authentic self.  Fear of missing out (FOMO) Platforms capitalize on the fundamental human need for connection by creating a fear of exclusion.  Anxiety and compulsion: Notifications and feeds highlighting the activities of friends and acquaintances can trigger the fear of missing out on social events or experiences. This anxiety can drive compulsive checking and over-engagement. Displacement of real-life interactions: The desire to stay "in the loop" online can cause users to prioritize virtual engagement over genuine, in-person social interactions, leading to feelings of loneliness and isolation.  Design features that drive compulsive use Social media platforms are deliberately engineered with features that make it hard to stop scrolling, even when a user intends to log off.  Infinite scroll: This feature eliminates stopping points, allowing users to consume an endless stream of content without having to make a conscious decision to start a new page. Autoplay: Platforms like YouTube and TikTok automatically play the next video in a queue, seamlessly prolonging a user's session without requiring any action. Personalized algorithms: Artificial intelligence (AI) is used to constantly learn a user's preferences, ensuring that the content delivered is as engaging and attention-grabbing as possible.  Targeting of adolescents Social media companies disproportionately impact younger users, whose brains are still in a sensitive period of development.  Vulnerability to reward systems: Developing brains are particularly sensitive to social rewards, which makes young people more susceptible to the variable reward systems of social media. Impact on developing brains: Excessive social media use has been linked to changes in the parts of the adolescent brain related to emotional learning, impulse control, and regulation. This can lead to increased emotional sensitivity and compromised decision-making.  This is for informational purposes only. For medical advice or diagnosis, consult a professional. The Mouth-Body Connection: How Oral Health Shapes Whole-Body Healing

The Doctor's Farmacy with Mark Hyman, M.D.

Most people don't realize that what happens in the mouth can ripple through the whole body. The balance of the oral microbiome—the community of bacteria living in our mouths—can either protect us or trigger widespread inflammation that affects the heart, joints, and brain. Hidden dental infections or mercury fillings can quietly drive fatigue, autoimmune issues, or dementia—and fixing the mouth often helps the rest of the body heal, too. The good news is that with simple steps like eating whole foods (often removing gluten), cleaning the mouth well, and breathing through the nose, we can protect both our smile and our overall health. When we care for the mouth as part of the body, lasting wellness becomes possible from the inside out. In this episode, Dr. Todd LePine, Dr. Elizabeth Boham, James Nestor, and I talk about how a healthy mouth microbiome is a key to whole-body wellness. Dr. Todd LePine graduated from Dartmouth Medical School and is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, specializing in Integrative Functional Medicine. He is an Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner. Prior to joining The UltraWellness Center, he worked as a physician at Canyon Ranch in Lenox, MA, for 10 years. Dr. LePine's focus at The UltraWellness Center is to help his patients achieve optimal health and vitality by restoring the natural balance to both the mind and the body. His areas of interest include optimal aging, bio-detoxification, functional gastrointestinal health, systemic inflammation, autoimmune disorders, and the neurobiology of mood and cognitive disorders. She is on the faculty for the Institute for Functional Medicine. James Nestor is an author and journalist who has written for Scientific American, Outside, The New York Times, and more. His book, Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art, was an instant New York Times and London Sunday Times bestseller. Breath explores how the human species has lost the ability to breathe properly—and how to get it back. Breath spent 18 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list in the first year of release, and will be translated into more than 30 languages. Breath was awarded the Best General Nonfiction Book of 2020 by the American Society of Journalists and Authors, and was nominated for Best Science Book of 2021 by the Royal Society. Nestor has spoken at Stanford Medical School, Yale School of Medicine, Harvard Medical School, The United Nations, Global Classroom, and appeared on more than 60 radio and television shows, including Fresh Air with Terry Gross, the Joe Rogan Show, and more. A hidden fire called chronic inflammation drives many problems—from joint pain and arthritis to autoimmune conditions, and even faster aging. Typical fixes (like pain meds and steroid shots) calm symptoms but often miss the “why,” and can leave people still hurting or even create more issues. Big triggers of inflammation that impact our joints, and so much more, include sugar and refined carbs, extra weight, leaky gut, toxins, infections, stress, and poor sleep—plus joints naturally get less blood and oxygen as we age. This is why it's important to create an anti-inflammatory lifestyle plan starting with real whole foods, and incorporating regular exercise, stress management, gut repair, and targeted anti-inflammatory supplements.  In this episode, I discuss, along with Dr. George Papanicolaou and Dr. Cindy Geyer, how chronic inflammation, arthritis, and joint pain can be reduced using a Functional Medicine approach, including how to do the anti-inflammatory 10-Day Detox diet.  Dr. George Papanicolaou is a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and is Board Certified in Family Medicine from Abington Memorial Hospital. Over time as the healthcare system made it harder for patients to receive personal care, Dr. Papanicolaou decided a change was needed. He began training in Functional Medicine through the Institute of Functional Medicine. In 2015, he established Cornerstone Personal Health—a practice dedicated entirely to Functional Medicine. In August 2017, Dr. Papanicolaou joined The UltraWellness Center. Dr. Cindy Geyer received her bachelor of science and her doctor of medicine degrees, with honors, from the Ohio State University. She completed residency in internal medicine at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, N.Y. and is triple board certified in internal medicine, integrative medicine and lifestyle medicine. Why You Should Listen:  In this episode, you will learn about the latest approaches to healing your body from mold toxicity, Lyme disease, and other complex, chronic health conditions. About My Guest: My guest for this episode is Dr. Neil Nathan.  Neil Nathan, MD has been practicing medicine for over 50 years and has been Board Certified in Family Practice and Pain Management and is a Founding Diplomate of the American Board of Integrative Holistic Medicine and a Founding Diplomate of ISEAI. He has written several books, including "Healing is Possible: New Hope for Chronic Fatigue, Fibromyalgia, Persistent Pain, and Other Chronic Illnesses" and "On Hope and Healing: For Those Who Have Fallen Through the Medical Cracks."  He has been working to bring an awareness that mold toxicity is a major contributing factor for patients with chronic illness and lectures internationally on this subject which led to the publication of his eBook, "Mold and Mycotoxins: Current Evaluation and Treatment, 2016" (now updated to 2022), and then to his best-selling book "Toxic: Heal Your Body from Mold Toxicity, Lyme Disease, Multiple Chemical Sensitivities and Chronic Environmental Illness."  2021 saw the publication of "Energetic Diagnosis," a discussion of the value of intuition and energetic devices as an aid to both diagnosis and treatment of medical illness.  In 2024, his book "The Sensitive Patient's Healing Guide" was released with a focus on how to approach the treatment of sensitive patients.  And most recently, in late 2025, the second edition of his book "Toxic" was released with several years of new information and insights on healing from complex chronic conditions.  Dr. Nathan has been treating chronic complex medical illnesses for 30 years now, and Lyme disease for the past 20 years.  As his practice has evolved, he finds himself increasingly treating the patients who have become so sensitive and toxic that they can no longer tolerate their usual treatments, and his major current interest is in finding unique ways of helping them to recover. Our immune systems are under more pressure than ever—from processed diets, environmental toxins, stress, and fast-spreading infections—and the result is faster aging and greater vulnerability to disease. As we grow older, “zombie cells” spread inflammation throughout the body, weakening defenses and accelerating decline. But research shows we're not powerless: the emerging science of immuno-rejuvenation reveals that we can retrain and rebuild our immunity. Through the right foods, lifestyle habits, and even strategic stressors, the body has hidden pathways for repair and renewal—offering clues to how we might slow aging and unlock greater resilience. In this episode, I discuss, along with Dr. Elizabeth Boham and Dr. Roger Seheult, how we can support the immune system by using food, lifestyle, and hormetic stress to reduce illness and restore resilience while slowing aging. From Fatigue to Freedom: Healing the Thyroid Beyond Lab Tests

Thyroid trouble often starts as a whisper—tiredness, stubborn weight, dry skin—until a closer look shows the tiny neck gland that sets the body's “speed” is out of tune. Basic tests can miss the real issue, so checking active hormones and thyroid antibodies—and hunting for triggers like stress, gluten sensitivity, toxins, nutrient gaps, and gut imbalances—can reveal what's really going on. When understood this way, thyroid health is no longer just about numbers on a lab report—it's about restoring balance in the whole system. With the right testing, nutrition, and support, energy, mood, and metabolism can all return to their natural rhythm. In this episode, I discuss, along with Dr. Elizabeth Boham and Dr. George Papanicolaou, thyroid conditions such as hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, thyroid autoimmunity and how Functional Medicine practitioners take a different approach to find the root cause of the imbalance. She is on the faculty for the Institute for Functional Medicine. In August 2017, I invited Dr. Papanicolaou to join The UltraWellness Center and we've been successfully helping people together ever since. This episode is brought to you by BIOptimizers. Many psychiatric labels—like bipolar disorder and schizophrenia—can obscure underlying biology, and symptom checklists often fail to explain or heal what's really going on. Emerging evidence reframes mental illness as a problem of brain energy, mitochondria, and inflammation—shaped by insulin signaling, circadian rhythm disruption, the gut–brain axis, toxins, infections, and nutrient status. Metabolic interventions such as ketogenic nutrition, already established for epilepsy, show promise for rebalancing neurotransmitters, lowering neuroinflammation, and improving overall brain function. With depression now a leading cause of disability, shifting from “manage the symptoms” to “fix the biology” could dramatically improve outcomes where standard drugs fall short. In this episode, Dr. Christopher Palmer, Dr. Todd LePine, Dr. Iain Campbell and I explore how rethinking mental illness as a metabolic and inflammatory disorder of the brain—rather than just a chemical imbalance—could transform the treatment and prevention of conditions like depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. Dr. Chris Palmer is a psychiatrist and researcher working at the interface of metabolism and mental health. He is the Director of the Department of Postgraduate and Continuing Education at McLean Hospital and an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. For over 25 years, he has held leadership roles in psychiatric education, conducted research, and worked with people who have treatment-resistant mental illnesses. He has been pioneering the use of the medical ketogenic diet in the treatment of psychiatric disorders - conducting research in this area, treating patients, writing, and speaking around the world on this topic. More broadly, he is interested in the roles of metabolism and metabolic interventions on brain health. Dr. lain Campbell is the first academic research fellow to specialise in Metabolic Psychiatry as the Baszucki Research Fellow in Metabolic Psychiatry at the University of Edinburgh. He has a PhD in Global Health from the University of Edinburgh and is a principal investigator on a pilot trial of a ketogenic diet for bipolar disorder. He is a workstream lead and co-investigator on the first publicly funded research hub for Metabolic Psychiatry, the UKRI Medical Research Council Hub for Metabolic Psychiatry at the University of Edinburgh. His research in metabolic psychiatry has been published in Nature press journals Molecular Psychiatry and Translational Psychiatry and presented at Mayo Clinic Grand Rounds and The Royal College of Psychiatrists International Congress.  This episode is brought to you by BIOptimizers. Today, I'm speaking with Dr. Bobby Dubois. Dr. Bobby is a Harvard-educated physician, Board-Certified in Internal Medicine with over 25 years of experience. He's an author, entrepreneur, wellness doctor, and Ironman Triathlete. Most recently, he led a health policy research organization in Washington, D.C. (National Pharmaceutical Council) as its Chief Science Officer and Executive Vice President. Prior to that, he served as the Chief Medical Officer of Cerner Life Sciences and co-founded Proto Care Sciences. He's the host of the Live Long and Well podcast and has made it his mission to help others cut through the noise and live longer with more energy as they age. The simple fact is, most retirees and pre-retirees want more time, energy, and independence to enjoy the life they've worked so hard to build. However, the reality is that longevity without good health won't achieve the lifestyle that most retirees envisioned during their working years. In part 1 of this 2-part conversation, we delve into the life-extending benefits of aerobic exercise, the scientific advantages of consistent sleep, and the surprising role of relationships in promoting increased longevity. Dr. Bobby outlines his six pillars of health and explains how to apply them in retirement. And here's the good news: it's never too late to start. In its simplest form, his advice is strikingly similar to what you'd hear from a financial advisor: It's much better to start saving and exercising young, but it's never too late to start. If you want to live not only longer, but better, this episode provides a clear path and roadmap to get there. GET A FREE COPY OF DR. BOBBY DUBOIS' E-BOOK, HOW TO LIVE LONG AND WELL Here's how: Step 1: Subscribe to the podcast and leave an honest rating & review on iTunes. Step 2: Text the word BOOK to 888-599-4491, and we'll send you a link to claim your free copy! In this podcast interview, you'll learn: Why exercise is the most powerful lever for longevity. The six pillars of health that drive longevity and overall wellness. Why it's never too late to start strength training and the surprising results from those who start later in life. The importance of a good sleep and tips to make it happen consistently. How sleep clears toxins from the brain and extends healthspan. How to diagnose the placebo effect to know when changing routines is working or not. Why social connection is just as important as diet and exercise. Show Notes: HowardBailey.com/520

ADHD and other brain-based conditions such as depression, autism, and even schizophrenia are increasingly understood as inflammatory disorders of the brain—deeply rooted in the complex interplay between genetics, environment, and lifestyle. Many individuals go undiagnosed for years, internalizing harmful labels like “lazy” or “difficult,” until the weight of unaddressed symptoms finally becomes too much. But there is hope: Functional Medicine offers a radically different approach by uncovering and addressing root causes such as nutritional deficiencies, gut microbiome imbalances, food sensitivities, toxin exposures, and lifestyle factors. Stories of transformation emerge when these root drivers are corrected—children once labeled disruptive begin to thrive, adults regain focus and emotional balance, and families find relief. This emerging paradigm offers not just symptom management but the possibility of genuine healing through personalized, whole-body care. In this episode, I discuss, along with Dr. George Papanicolaou and Dr. Jaquel Patterson, how ADHD and other mental health challenges are often rooted in inflammation and imbalances in the body—and how addressing diet, lifestyle, and root causes can lead to real healing. Dr. Papanicolaou is a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and is Board Certified in Family Medicine from Abington Memorial Hospital. In August 2017, I invited Dr. Papanicolaou to join The UltraWellness Center and we've been successfully helping people together ever since. Dr. Jaquel Patterson is a nationally recognized naturopathic physician, success coach, three-time Amazon bestselling author, and Forbes contributor. She owns a successful medical practice, Fairfield Family Health in Connecticut, and brings over 16 years of clinical experience, specializing in Lyme disease, autoimmune conditions, integrative psychiatry, and environmental medicine. A sought-after speaker, Dr. Patterson has been featured in USA Today, New York Magazine, and Forbes, and on CBS, Fox, NBC, and ABC. She's the past president of the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians and currently serves on the board of the American Academy of Environmental Medicine. Certified by the Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM), she's also completed a fellowship in functional medicine with a focus on psychiatry and ADD/ADHD. In addition to her naturopathic medical degree, Dr. Patterson holds an MBA in Healthcare Management from Quinnipiac University and an undergraduate degree from Cornell University. Rates of chronic illness, behavioral disorders, and neurodevelopmental challenges are rising rapidly among children, often tied to underlying gut dysfunction, nutrient deficiencies, and environmental triggers such as toxins and ultra-processed foods. Conventional treatments frequently overlook these root causes, relying instead on symptom management or medication. Functional approaches emphasize foundational lifestyle changes—clean nutrition, microbiome support, movement, sleep, and stress reduction—as powerful tools to restore health. Children are especially responsive to these changes, often experiencing rapid and dramatic improvements in behavior, mood, and physical symptoms. With education, testing, and family-centered strategies, parents can take simple, effective steps to help their children thrive. In this episode, I discuss, along with Dr. Elisa Song, Dr. Suzanne Goh, and Dr. Elizabeth Boham why a root-cause approach is just as important for children, as it is for adults. Dr. Elisa Song, MD is a Stanford-, NYU-, UCSF-trained integrative pediatrician, pediatric functional medicine expert, and mom to 2 thriving children - and she is on a mission to revolutionize the future of children's health. Dr. Song is the bestselling author of the Healthy Kids Happy Kids: An Integrative Pediatrician's Guide to Whole Child Resilience. Dr. Song created Healthy Kids Happy Kids as an online holistic pediatric resource to help practitioners and parents bridge the gap between conventional and integrative pediatrics with an evidence-based, pediatrician-backed, mom-approved approach. In her integrative pediatric practice, she's helped 1000s of kids get to the root causes of their health concerns and empowered parents to help their children thrive by integrating conventional pediatrics with functional medicine, homeopathy, acupuncture, herbal medicine, and essential oils. Dr. Song is chair of A4M's pediatric education and has lectured around the world at leading integrative and functional medicine conferences and premier parenting events. She has also been featured in hundreds of top podcasts, print and online media outlets, including the Wellness Mama podcast, BloomTV, Forbes, Healthline, MindBodyGreen, National Geographic, PopSugar, Parents, Motherly, Parade, Verywell Health, and New York Post. Dr. Suzanne Goh, co-founder and chief medical officer at Cortica, is a Rhodes Scholar and graduate of Harvard University, University of Oxford, and Harvard Medical School who has spent decades working with autistic children. Her work as a board-certified pediatric behavioral neurologist, behavioral analyst, neuroscience researcher, and author led her to create the Cortica Care Model, an innovative, whole-child approach that combines optimal medical treatment with the most effective strategies for advancing cognition, communication, and behavior. Dr. Elizabeth Boham is Board Certified in Family Medicine from Albany Medical School, and she is an Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner and the Medical Director of The UltraWellness Center.
