Plus, Terria offers practical advice for parents feeling overwhelmed by the challenges of caring for their child's hair, reminding us all that it's totally okay to learn and grow together in this journey.Terria Roushun, the founder of Hair Essentials and a certified trauma-informed care expert, joins Rachel for a rich discussion that goes beyond hair care – it's about understanding identity, culture, and love. As we kick things off, Terria passionately explains how learning about the cultural significance of hair is a vital part of parenting black children. She emphasizes that it's not just about keeping hair neat and styled; it's about making a profound statement to your child: “I see you, I value you.” With humor and insight, Rachel and Terria dissect the common fears and anxieties that adoptive parents face when caring for a black child's hair. It's like diving into a treasure chest of wisdom, where you realize that every coil and curl carries a story and a history.Throughout the conversation, they tackle the misconceptions surrounding black hair, dispelling the idea that it's a daunting task that requires some magical product. Instead, Terria encourages parents to view hair care as an opportunity for connection – a bonding time that can lead to deeper discussions about identity and self-worth. With relatable stories and practical tips, Terria inspires parents to embrace this journey with love and confidence, reminding them that learning how to care for their child's hair is not a chore but a beautiful act of love. The episode is not just educational; it's also heartwarming and empowering. It serves as a reminder that the journey of transracial adoption is filled with both challenges and immense joy. What would you do if your fine professor wanted you? If you are Miss Jones you're going to find out. The twist and turns in this book will keep you on the edge of your seat and tuned in to the podcast until the very end. Discuss it with us. Psychology student Isis Jones- stellar student by day, one of ATL's most enticing dancers by night- is about to watch her meticulously choreographed life pirouette into chaos when the man she's loved for over a year, Louis Thibodeaux, reveals his true colors. Armed with irrefutable proof of his deceit, she confronts him, but the darkness he unleashes will lead to far more than a broken heart. Now, Isis' sharp mind must grapple with a reality she never imagined, rewriting the narrative of her life one twisted truth at a time.Dr. RJ West, haunted by the death of his mother and past betrayals, no longer trusted easily. His groundbreaking research on Black men's mental health has earned him accolades and tenure at West-Clayton State University, yet darkness lurks beneath his academic acclaim. In the city's shadows, he and his brother Lionell dance with danger, consequences a heartbeat away.By day, he challenges his students to question the conventional understanding of abnormality, but beneath the intellectual façade lies a hidden world, cloaked in the shadows of night where he and Lionell battle demons of a different kind. After a late-night incident with potentially drastic consequences, Dr. West succumbs to Lionell's lure for "a little fun." He finds himself at Magic, the hottest adult entertainment club in town, where a familiar face ignites the stage.Fame at Magic comes with its thorns. In the electric atmosphere, tensions crackle for Isis and her crew; Terria. Catissa, and Chanel. The betrayal from Louis was still fresh, leaving her unprepared for the jolt of electricity that shot through her when her eyes locked on the last person she expected to see in Magic's den of temptation-Dr. West. His presence put him front and center stage with a noticeable mask of composure that barely concealed the storm brewing in his eyes. His normally calm demeanor was fractured, a testament to her God-given talent.Lines blur when professional and personal collide in a heady cocktail of danger and desire. What will the consequences be once their paths cross under the pulsating neon lights?**This story was previously on Kindle Vella; however, it is not the same story. A Doula is a trained and experienced professional who provides emotional, physical, and informational support to individuals and their families during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. The word "Doula" comes from ancient Greek, meaning "a woman who serves."In this episode of Our Womanity, Dr. Rachel Pope is joined by Terria Saunders, a Perinatal Doula, founder of Beauty N Birthing and Mommy Meet Up. Terria is a wife and mother of four children two of which are a set of twins! She enjoys laughter, drives, cozy clothes, and supporting women through their motherhood journeys. Terria's goal is for every mother to go into motherhood with as much education as possible regarding birth, and support during the process and after. She believes that “no mom should walk this journey alone.” Terria discusses the crucial role doulas play in prenatal care, including emotional support, education, and advocacy for mothers. She highlights the importance of building a strong rapport and trust between the doula, health care provider, and the expecting mother.Featured in this episode: What is a Doula? The benefits of having a doula during pregnancy, labor, and postpartum. How a Doula differs from a midwife or other healthcare providers. The different roles Doulas play in the childbirth journey. How doulas can help mothers navigate medical interventions and communicate their preferences to healthcare providers. It's important to note that doulas do not provide medical care or perform clinical tasks like checking vital signs or delivering babies. Instead, they complement the care provided by healthcare professionals, such as obstetricians, midwives, and nurses, by focusing on the emotional and non-medical aspects of childbirth. If you enjoyed this episode of Womanity, please subscribe, rate, and leave a review.
