623. Part 1 of Ed Branley's return to the porch to talk about the 200th anniversary of the Marquis de Lafayette's visit to America in 1825. Fifty years after the Revolutionary War, Lafayette returned for a triumphant tour of the United States. Nowhere was he more welcome than in his visit to Louisiana. Ed is a volunteer docent at the Cabildo Museum in Jackson Square, and the Museum has a fantastic eshibit commemorating the occasion. "Bienvenue Lafayette. Thu, April 10, 2025 - Sun, January 18, 2026. Commemorating the 200th Anniversary of the Marquis de Lafayette's Visit to Louisiana. Lafayette's tour was marked by public celebrations, music, and the creation of commemorative items, making him a precursor to modern celebrity. One notable stop was his five-day visit to New Orleans in April 1825, where city officials spared no expense, spending the equivalent of $450,000 to transform the Cabildo into lavish accommodations for Lafayette, symbolizing the city's growing significance in the United States. "To commemorate the bicentennial of Lafayette's tour, the Louisiana State Museum presents Bienvenue Lafayette from April 10, 2025, to January 18, 2026, opening on the exact 200th anniversary of his arrival in New Orleans. The exhibition features artifacts, documents, and works of art from local and national collections, and offers visitors insight into Lafayette's legacy as a champion of liberty, democracy, and the abolition of slavery. This exhibition deepens the public's understanding of Lafayette's impact on both the United States and France and highlights New Orleans' role in the broader historical narrative" (Cabildo). The rise of far-right politicians to power across the Western world has led to a normalization of a discourse that many would be ashamed to speak just a few years ago. The normalization of misogyny in the public sphere is just the first step that leads men to think it's ok to rape a woman because her husband consented for her. Just like what happened to Gisele Pelicot. Ahead of International Women's Day, host Catarina Vila Nova sits down with Lina Galvez, Member of the European Parliament and Chair of the Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality. They spoke just a few hours after Luis Rubiales, the former head of the Spanish Football Federation, was convicted of sexual assault for kissing Jenny Hermoso without her consent during the World Cup final. In this conversation, they talk about the consequences of this case and also that of Gisele Pelicot. Two cases that alert us for all there's left to do in the feminist fight.

Full Text of ReadingsMonday of the Thirteenth Week in Ordinary Time Lectionary: 377The Saint of the day is Saint Junipero SerraSaint Junipero Serra’s Story In 1776, when the American Revolution was beginning in the east, another part of the future United States was being born in California. That year a gray-robed Franciscan founded Mission San Juan Capistrano, now famous for its annually returning swallows. San Juan was the seventh of nine missions established under the direction of this indomitable Spaniard. Born on Spain's island of Mallorca, Serra entered the Franciscan Order taking the name of Saint Francis' childlike companion, Brother Juniper. Until he was 35, he spent most of his time in the classroom—first as a student of theology and then as a professor. He also became famous for his preaching. Suddenly he gave it all up and followed the yearning that had begun years before when he heard about the missionary work of Saint Francis Solano in South America. Junipero's desire was to convert native peoples in the New World. Arriving by ship at Vera Cruz, Mexico, he and a companion walked the 250 miles to Mexico City. On the way Junipero's left leg became infected by an insect bite and would remain a cross—sometimes life-threatening—for the rest of his life. For 18 years, he worked in central Mexico and in the Baja Peninsula. He became president of the missions there. Enter politics: the threat of a Russian invasion south from Alaska. Charles III of Spain ordered an expedition to beat Russia to the territory. So the last two conquistadors—one military, one spiritual—began their quest. José de Galvez persuaded Junipero to set out with him for present-day Monterey, California. The first mission founded after the 900-mile journey north was San Diego in 1769. That year a shortage of food almost canceled the expedition. Vowing to stay with the local people, Junipero and another friar began a novena in preparation for St. Joseph's day, March 19, the scheduled day of departure. On that day, the relief ship arrived. Other missions followed: Monterey/Carmel (1770); San Antonio and San Gabriel (1771); San Luís Obispo (1772); San Francisco and San Juan Capistrano (1776); Santa Clara (1777); San Buenaventura (1782). Twelve more were founded after Serra's death. Junipero made the long trip to Mexico City to settle great differences with the military commander. He arrived at the point of death. The outcome was substantially what Junipero sought: the famous “Regulation” protecting the Indians and the missions. It was the basis for the first significant legislation in California, a “Bill of Rights” for Native Americans. Because the Native Americans were living a nonhuman life from the Spanish point of view, the friars were made their legal guardians. The Native Americans were kept at the mission after baptism lest they be corrupted in their former haunts—a move that has brought cries of “injustice” from some moderns. Junipero's missionary life was a long battle with cold and hunger, with unsympathetic military commanders and even with danger of death from non-Christian native peoples. Through it all his unquenchable zeal was fed by prayer each night, often from midnight till dawn. He baptized over 6,000 people and confirmed 5,000. His travels would have circled the globe. He brought the Native Americans not only the gift of faith but also a decent standard of living. He won their love, as witnessed especially by their grief at his death. He is buried at Mission San Carlo Borromeo, Carmel, and was beatified in 1988. Pope Francis canonized him in Washington, D.C., on September 23, 2015. Reflection The word that best describes Junipero is zeal. It was a spirit that came from his deep prayer and dauntless will. “Always forward, never back” was his motto. His work bore fruit for 50 years after his death as the rest of the missions were founded in a kind of Christian communal living by the Indians. When both Mexican and American greed caused the secularization of the missions, the Chumash people went back to what they had been—God again writing straight with crooked lines. Morgan Stanley's Chief Latin America Strategist explains the importance of Mexico's upcoming presidential election, laying out the possible investment implications of potential policy reforms.----- Transcript -----Welcome to Thoughts on the Market. I'm Nik Lippman, Morgan Stanley's Chief Latin America Strategist. Along with my colleagues bringing you a variety of perspectives, today I'll talk about why Mexico's upcoming election matters for markets. It's Friday, May 10, at 10am in Sao Paulo. Voters in Mexico will choose a new president in less than a month, on June 2. The two leading candidates – Claudia Sheinbaum and Xóchitl Gálvez – have presented strong campaigns amidst a tense political backdrop. And yet, asset prices have not yet begun to react to potential election outcomes. There's significant policy differences between Sheinbaum and Galvez – thus an important investment debate around each of them. However, polls suggest a strong lead for Sheinbaum, who is the candidate from the ruling party Morena. In fact, it seems that the key debate that markets are focused on right now is not so much who wins, but rather what type of president Sheinbaum would be, if she does get elected. If she does indeed win, the expectation is for policy continuity post-election—particularly as it relates to Mexico's nearshoring – or moving industrial supply chains from Asia to North America. This trend has been a major driver of the country's economy and major asset classes. And so the market seems to be focusing squarely on policy decisions that may be taken by the incoming administration. Mexico is in a strong position to benefit from its relationship with the United States and as well as the nearshoring opportunities. We see a positive skew for both equities and credit, and think the election can act as a catalyst for assets that have traded cheaply.Yet, significant reforms are necessary to take full advantage of this setup. Indeed, we would argue that rapid and deep structural reforms would be crucial, especially when it comes to fiscals and the energy space. For example, we think there could be a need for stronger partnership between the public and the private sector and a rethink of parts of Mexico's electricity model. If Mexico solves its electricity supply-side challenges, it can build on its favorable nearshoring position. But on the other hand, there's no industrial revolution without electricity. However, the risk-reward for the Mexican peso is slightly different. It has already benefited from the rise in foreign investment - and the high interest rate differential between Mexico and the United States. With all that said, there are risks from the elections, too. If any political party wins two-thirds majority, it opens the possibility for changes to the constitution. And current proposals by Mexico's sitting president could open the door for larger fiscal deficits; and potentially some more unorthodox policies down the road. We will continue to keep you posted on Mexico's election outcomes.Thank you for listening. If you enjoy Thoughts on the Market, take a moment to rate and review us wherever you listen. It helps more people find the show.

Today, we're re-airing episode 121, when Keli sat down with her client Nicolassa Galvez, founder of Chingona Coach. She's an anti-career coach for women who feel unseen and undervalued at work. “Anti” because traditional career advice doesn't work for Chingonas — badass chicas who have big dreams and lean into being too much. In this episode, they get into her philosophy, what brought her to this work, and how she empowers her clients to reclaim their agency over their careers. And we're sharing it with you because Nicolassa is a member of the SellingU community! She partners with her clients to help them see that the workplace structure (originating in racist and patriarchal ideals) is broken and not them. And this knowledge, combined with their inherent worth, is how they feel empowered to raise their voice regardless of who is (or is not) listening. With the rise of AI, more and more people are outsourcing tasks to robots to save time and money. Now more than ever, you see many books coming out, and guess what? They're written with the help of AI. We're also seeing a wave of digital narration. After all, why narrate your book when you can ask AI to do it? Well, AI can do many things, but there are still limitations, And my guest agrees 100%. Capturing and conveying the meaning and sound of a book is a unique skill that requires human emotion. Who better to know that than an audiobook narrator? So, let's get right to the conversation.Today, I am joined by my friend Danny Galvez. He is an exceptional individual, and he is unashamedly funny. If you're not yet a fan of his, I'm sure you will be by the time you listen to this episode. If you're excited to write and narrate your book, join us in this episode of SMART Businesses Do THIS!About the Guest:Danny Galvez is a Business Development Consultant, author, speaker, podcast and audiobook producer, voice-over artist, and course creator, among others. “No matter what we do in life, whether it's AI or doing it naturally, we have to verify.” - Danny GalvezIn This Episode:- Why should somebody do their audiobook when they can just get an AI robot to do it?- What things can you outsource to AI?- Considering people's shrinking attention span, will they still listen to audiobooks or go for shorter, faster content in TikTok or Instagram?- Should everyone have a book?- The dangers of relying too much on AI, especially for kids- Business and relationship conversation from Adam's experience and how it relates to AIAnd much more…Resources Mentioned: - Designrr - https://designrr.io/- Perennial Seller by Ryan Holiday - https://www.amazon.com/Perennial-Seller-Making-Marketing-Lasts/dp/0143109014Connect with Danny Galvez: - Website - https://dannygalvez.phonesites.com/- Facebook - https://web.facebook.com/danny.galvez.3382/- Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/dannygalvez2/- LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/danny-galvez-186a7420Connect with Adam Lyons:- Website - https://thesmartblueprint.com/- LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/theadamlyons/- Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/TheAdamLyons/- Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/TheAdamLyons/
Grab your favorite sweet treat, your sweetheart or a friend or a frenemy or your fur-baby, and join us for our Valentine's re-watch! Our guest, the bad-ass actress, model and writer Patricia Galvez picked the 2000 film “Chocolat,” as it was one that made a big impact on her life not just as an artist, but as a person, and it just felt so right to have this be our Valentine's Day episode! This has a star-studded cast, among them Dame Judy Dench, Juliette Binoche, and Alfred Molina to name a few. We discuss how this film tricked people into thinking they were watching a romance film, but really what they got was so much more - a film about the relationships between women, the roles of motherhood, and all the delightful subtle subversiveness woven throughout the film. Patricia and Devin met on a music video shoot very shortly after Patricia moved to Los Angeles, and then reconnected years ago through their training at the martial arts studio Noho MMA. This was a room full of women warriors, you do NOT want to mess with them. We also talk about some of the rom-coms of our childhood, a lot about musical theatre, and making chocolate. This week's women in film facts are appropriately French in theme, discussing Alice Guy Blaché, who is considered the first female director and filmmaker, and Bridgette Bardot, being both an icon and later marring on her own legacy. You can find Patricia on Instagram @patriciag_03 and check out her IMDb to catch her on a screen near you! (0:00) Introduction (01:23) Icebreakers (16:21) Women in Film History (30:28) Chocolat
For the first time in the run of this podcast (though certainly not the last!) today we have a poem in translation. Marisa Galvez joins Close Readings to discuss "The Song of Nothing," a poem by the first attested troubadour, William IX. The poem is something like 900 years old, and Marisa helps us see both its strangeness and the sense in which it feels like it might have been written yesterday. You'll hear Marisa read the poem both in an English translation and in its original language, Old Occitan, where its musicality and verve really come through. This was a fascinating conversation about how poems are made—and why, and who and what for—with lessons to offer both about the medieval period and about the poems and songs we encounter today.Marisa Galvez is Professor of French and Italian (and, by courtesy, of German Studies and of Comparative Literature) at Stanford University, where she specializes in the literature of the Middle Ages in France and Western Europe, especially the poetry and narrative literature written in Occitan and Old French. She is the author of two books, both published by University of Chicago Press: Songbook: How Lyrics Became Poetry in Medieval Europe (2012) and The Subject of Crusade: Lyric, Romance, and Materials, 1150-1500 (2020). Her current book project concerns contemporary and modern translations of medieval lyric and how they propose new ways of "lyric knowing" the Global South.Remember to follow, rate, and review the podcast if you like what you hear.
