Hi friends! Today we have my friend, Kurston Clark aka @benevolent.birth, on the podcast. We have a very candid conversation about the importance of taking full responsibility of your pregnancy and birth, the illusion of safety, and how to mindfully choose your birth support if you desire it. So often, women outsource for their birth because that's what society tells you you “have to do” and it seems to be the safest option to most people; however this is simply an illusion because even the most experienced care provider cannot ultimately control the outcome of your birth. Not only that, but oftentimes the people we invite into our birth space end up interfering in a way that disturbs birth. Choosing who steps into your birth space is so important. I hope this episode resonates with you!
Have circumstances impacted your pregnancy and/or birth? Today we're chatting with Heather Delaney, childbirth educator, certified labor and postpartum doula and CEO of Maryland State Doulas. Heather walks us through how she and her team of doulas and birth professionals shifted during the 2020 Pandemic to serve their clients with virtual support. When policies (like partners and/or doulas not allowed in birthing rooms of hospitals and centers) and communications have been challenging, they've found alternative ways to educate and empower, regardless of the birthing location. We talk about what some of the biggest changes/challenges have shown up in the birth world, what families can do in the midst of everything as well as how to minimize the fear around birth that already exists and can be magnified when blended with the conversations around COVID-19. In this episode, Adriana Lozada of the Birthful podcast joins us to jam out on all things physiological pregnancy prep and birth support. What does the term “physiological birth” even mean? How do our minds influence our physiology? How do chemicals influence our physiology? And, what is considered an intervention. Does more technology equal a “safer” birth? Is a home birth the only way to have a physiological birth? And, what is the role of the doula in supporting a physiological birth? Statistics show having a doula in the birthing space improves birth outcomes. What is the superpower that doulas specifically bring to the birth?Adriana talks about her own birth. She mentions how it went well ‘on paper', but it was not the experience she desired. She talks about the importance of internal work i.e the mindset along with the external work. Everything else we do will not help if we are not equipped with the mental tools we need to have a safe and calm birth. In addition, we discuss the importance of hormones. Especially unhindered flow of the oxytocin in labor and how the modern day birthing environment is inhibiting it. We discuss inhibitors such as the pressure of giving birth on or before the due date, continuous electronic fetal monitoring during labor for low risk birthers, and the importance of surrendering to your intuition for physiological birth. In this episode Adriana really breaks it down into actionable ways we, as birth workers and families, work towards getting the pregnancy, birth and recovery desired. Welcome back to our monthly Q&A with Cynthia & Trisha! This month, we kick things off with a short story from an L&D nurse attending a mother giving birth to her seventh baby who was coerced into an unnecessary cesarean and what we think about how it was handled. Next, we get into your questions starting with: How do I defend myself against friends and family who don't support my plans for a natural birth? A Doula is a trained and experienced professional who provides emotional, physical, and informational support to individuals and their families during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. The word "Doula" comes from ancient Greek, meaning "a woman who serves."In this episode of Our Womanity, Dr. Rachel Pope is joined by Terria Saunders, a Perinatal Doula, founder of Beauty N Birthing and Mommy Meet Up. Terria is a wife and mother of four children two of which are a set of twins! She enjoys laughter, drives, cozy clothes, and supporting women through their motherhood journeys. Terria's goal is for every mother to go into motherhood with as much education as possible regarding birth, and support during the process and after. She believes that “no mom should walk this journey alone.” Terria discusses the crucial role doulas play in prenatal care, including emotional support, education, and advocacy for mothers. She highlights the importance of building a strong rapport and trust between the doula, health care provider, and the expecting mother.Featured in this episode: What is a Doula? The benefits of having a doula during pregnancy, labor, and postpartum. How a Doula differs from a midwife or other healthcare providers. The different roles Doulas play in the childbirth journey. How doulas can help mothers navigate medical interventions and communicate their preferences to healthcare providers. It's important to note that doulas do not provide medical care or perform clinical tasks like checking vital signs or delivering babies. Instead, they complement the care provided by healthcare professionals, such as obstetricians, midwives, and nurses, by focusing on the emotional and non-medical aspects of childbirth. If you enjoyed this episode of Womanity, please subscribe, rate, and leave a review. “There's got to be more to it.” This is what physical therapist and PRI teacher Hayley Kava said to herself about pelvic floor care when she was dealing with her own pelvic floor health. Nuance is key when it comes to pelvic floor care, birth prep, birth support tools and really health in general. We are all unique beings and need unique solutions! Yet too often we slap the same quick fixes on everyone. Such as the kegel. Hayley talks about what she found to really help herself and others find the path to healing and empowerment. Yet our society is filled with quick fixes. While they may get a lot of likes and comments on social media, do they really help people see lasting change and benefit? Probably not.Hayley shares so many knowledge bombs about the body, pelvic floor care, and birthing process. And, how we can work with people in a more empowering and impactful way. What helps someone with a certain body pattern may not be the best for someone in a different pattern. So what may be extremely beneficial for one individual, might not work at all for another. Let's learn how to meet the body where it's at. Let's break out of the boxes we have placed ourselves in and learn how to support lasting shifts in the body and in birth. The body is wise and birth is a normal physiological process that sometimes requires medical support. Not an emergency that sometimes happens physiologically. We need to start learning how to speak the language of the body and of birth and support the physiological processes. We can then help ourselves and our clients work towards healing their bodies, having easier births, and really showing up in the world in the unique way they are meant to. One key element to an empowering birth experience is carefully creating your birth support team. Who are those people you want around you? How do you want to feel? What are your birth preferences? Maybe one of the most important decisions that has the greatest influence over birth outcomes is provider choice. In this episode, Doula Rachael and Dr. Shannon go over some ways to ask questions in a manner that allows you to feel empowered and to really hear how your provider approaches normal physiological birth. They also provide a comprehensive list of questions to ask (yes this is geared toward hospital births, but these are questions to ask yourself and homebirth midwives too)! Sacred Window Podcast: Nurturing Awareness in Postpartum Care
In this episode, I speak with Christine D'Esposito, Director of Programs at Birthing from Within. During my own first pregnancy in 2007, Birthing from Within was an incredible support model for me in exploring the more subtle aspect of birth readiness, and harnessing my own feelings of empowerment to trust my body and honor the changes I was going through. Now, as a proponent of conscious postpartum care, I love how the tenants taught by Birthing from Within support the foundations of our work! This is a beautiful episode you don't want to miss! Christine D'Esposito is a Mentor, Doula and Facilitator with over fifteen years of experience in the field of birth work. She lives in Duluth, MN and is the Director of Programs at Birthing from Within. Birthing from Within was founded in 1998 by midwife Pam England when she realized that something was missing from birth preparation in our culture. While lots of organizations address parents' brains and bodies, very few address their hearts. Birthing from Within works to fill that gap by providing parents with preparation for the deep psychological and emotional transformations of birth. Christine discovered Birthing From Within in 2003 at her first doula training. It was the concept of honoring birth as a rite of passage and a transformational experience for everyone involved that spoke to her most. Christine has a passion for the intersection of birth and social justice work and aspires to be an agent of change in the world. www.birthingfromwithin.com Social media for FB and IG @birthingfromwithin

In this episode, I'm joined by Ash (he/him), a father living in Hobart, Tasmania, with his partner Chelsea (she/her) and their two-year-old son, Luen. Ash shares their journey of becoming parents. Ash and Chelsea went through the process of IVF for 2.5-3 years and sadly experienced a miscarriage in the process. They made the move from Melbourne to Tasmania during their IVF journey and we speak about the process of transporting their embryos over there. Ash's unwavering support for Chelsea during her pregnancy, labour, and birth is a significant part of their story. Chelsea had an induced labour due to reduced amniotic fluid, which resulted in a swift but painful experience. They had a wonderful obstetrician and felt supported throughout the transformative process, and Ash got to catch Luen as he was being born. The labour and birth became a deeply spiritual journey and the most profound experience of Ash's life. The initial month of parenthood created a magical atmosphere, even through the sleep deprivation. Ash reflects on how fatherhood has changed him, forcing him to confront himself and become the best version of himself for his child. As Chelsea manages her own thriving hairdressing business, Ash took on the primary care for the first two and a half years of Luen's life and is now transitioning back into his art and music career. Balancing his responsibilities as a father, partner and retaining his creative practice has shown his dedication and enduring love for his family. Ash also talks about witnessing their child's unique personality emerge each day. The joy he finds in seeing their son grow and thrive reflects the incredible journey they have embarked upon as parents. Helping women prioritize themselves throughout the whole journey (and particularly when no one else is) while further tapping into the excitement of it all continues to be the mission of Rumbly since its first conception. On today's podcast, we're going to talk with the founder of Dandy Doula, Xian Brooks, MPH, about the importance of intersectional birth work and amplifying the need for intersectional birth support for queer, trans, and BIPOC birthing bodies. Xian Brooks (he/him) is a public health professional from Louisville, Kentucky, where he is a community-based birth doula and a Master of Science in Nursing student. Xian completed his Bachelor's of Science in Public Health Education at North Carolina Central University and his Master's of Public Health in Community and Behavioral Health at the University of Colorado. Over time, Xian has accumulated a lot of experience in queer, trans, non-binary, and gender non-conforming reproductive health education. Xian's training has equipped him to understand the root causes of perinatal death rates among Black individuals, especially how race, gender, sexual orientation, and class are not mutually exclusive when it comes to health disparities. Xian's lived experience recognizes that health disparities are more than just numbers on a page. Xian is currently working towards becoming a nurse-midwife because representation in healthcare is extremely important to Xian. He firmly believes it is necessary to overcome negative health outcomes and revolutionize healthcare. We talk about what inspired Xian to dive into the work of community and behavioral health as well as his journey as a nurse-midwife. We also discuss what intersectional birth work looks like and the importance to amplify the need to create safe perinatal spaces for queer, trans, and BIPOC birthing bodies. Content warning: We mention transphobia, misgendering, deadnaming, racism, police violence, and birth trauma. RESOURCES: Learn more about Xian Brooks and The Dandy Doula here. In this week's special bonus episode of “This is Motherhood,” host Joyce Brewer speaks with Jamie Jones, a childbirth educator at Birthsmarter, a doula, a pre- and postnatal corrective exercise specialist, and a certified personal trainer. Jamie's birth experience and her experience with postpartum depression led her to switch careers, so she could help support other women through the pre-and post-birth experience. Since then, she's learned so much and Jamie explains why it is so important for BIPOC moms to advocate for themselves when giving birth – she also shares tactics and tools they can use to combat postpartum depression and explains how new moms can motivate themselves to move their bodies during a very exhausting time.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Michelle chats with Gina Alemán about being a doula, providing postpartum support and education to new families, and the Dancing For Birth program. Together, they discuss the benefits of movement and dance for pregnancy, birth, postpartum, babies, and healing trauma. Gina shares how Dancing For Birth helps birth partners to feel better equipped for labor, as well. "A big part of the time that I spend with the participants and my clients in these classes, the Dancing For Birth classes, is 'How can you reconnect to your instincts and how can you awaken your instincts?'... You start to be more connected to your body. You start to understand what feels good and what does not. And, you start to understand that you can trust your body."— Gina Alemán About Gina:Gina Alemán is the heart and hands behind perinatal care company New Blossom Maternity Services. Gina is a former K to Adult educator of more than 14 years and shares relevant and evidence-based information with her clients through childbirth education, Dancing For Birth classes, birth support, lactation counseling, and postpartum coaching care. In this week's episode, I am chatting with Rob Geraghty who candidly shares his experiences of being a birth partner, and becoming a father of 3 children. So often the focus in maternity care is around supporting the women during pregnancy and birth, so it is easy to forget the partner and ask how they are doing. Rob admits that he didn't always find it easy in the beginning, and was happier when he was able to get back to more of a work-life balance. He points out that not all dads will enjoy being around babies and small children all of the time, and that it is important to try to carve out some time to do things that they enjoy.Rob certainly opened my eyes to the way that some dads may feel, and I am grateful to other men like Scott Mair who runs Paternal Mental Health Support @p_m_h_support offering dads a platform to ensure that they are well supported as they navigate fatherhood. In this episode, I am speaking to James, a male midwife who is a true inspiration to so many birth keepers.James has a real passion to support pregnant women and people through physiological childbirth, and he shares with us his story, of how he always wanted to be a midwife from a very young age - and his journey to fulfilling that dream. He now works in rural Wales, where the service is midwife-led only. With no hospitals close by, families in his care are offered the opportunity to give birth with local midwives in attendance, either at home or in a stand-alone Midwifery Led Unit (MLU). This model of 'continuity of carer' means that these families are able to achieve physiological birth more easily, with the level of support that the midwives offer, and transfer rates are low.You can follow James on Instagram @james_the_midwife If you would like to buy a copy of the book that accompanies this podcast - click here:-Labour of Love - The Ultimate Guide to Being a Birth Partner — https://bit.ly/LabourofloveOr purchase a copy via my website - www.birthability.co.ukFollow me on Instagram @theultimatebirthpartner @birthabilityBook a 1-2-1 session with Sallyann - https://linktr.ee/SallyannBeresfordPlease remember that the information shared with you in this episode is solely based on my own personal experiences as a doula and the private opinions of my guest, based on his own experiences as a midwife. If your partner is thinking that there's really no point in having a doula because that's kind of taking over their job, or they don't think it's worth the financial investment, or they just literally have no idea what a doula does, they're not alone! This episode is going to walk you through our (my husband + me) journey to discovering what a doula was, why she might be beneficial, if she was actually worth the investment, and if we would hire one again. I hope you have your partners listen in to this episode because it's an honest take on what it's like for our partners to think through and plan for having someone in their intimate space with the woman they love, during labor and birth. Today we hear from Erin who lives in Perth with her husband and two children. Erin is a Type 1 Diabetic and we hear how this affected her first pregnancy and what different approaches she took in her VBAC pregnancy to give herself the best chance of experiencing spontaneous labour for the first time, as she was induced at 37 weeks in her first birth as per hospital policy for Type 1 Diabetic women.Erin tested positive to Group B streptococcus (GBS) towards the end of her VBAC pregnancy which also coincided with a snap-lockdown in Perth of 3 days. In maternity this took the form of support people being disallowed from entering the birth unit in public hospital settings until the mother was deemed to be in active labour. On the day Erin's labour began with her waters breaking, restrictions had been lifted following the lockdown and residents of Perth were able to go to football matches as well as the pub during this post-lockdown transition period, but not maternity- her husband missed out on supporting her during the crucial early stages of labour and was also asked to leave 15 minutes after her daughter was born, via a repeat emergency caesarean.Despite how covid affected her labour a resilient Erin came away from her birth with overall positive feelings about the experience, which she attributes to the kind of preparation she had done in her second pregnancy. We encourage government and hospital policy makers to listen and learn from Erin's experience. We need to get the balance right because as anyone who listens to our podcast would know- support in birth matters, and no woman should ever have to labour alone.~ Notes ~Facebook Type 1 Diabetic support group:https://www.facebook.com/groups/1527899494122956**VBAC Birth Stories features women's lived experiences. https://www.laurajawad.com/ From Laura's website: I am passionate about supporting people through their transition from pregnancy to parenthood. I have birthed two babies and I am stepparent to one. I've lived in 6 states and 2 countries and have enthusiastically called the Seattle-area home for the last 10 years. I'm a coffee snob, PhD-trained scientist, cat lover, runner and master procrastinator. I can never find my keys, I don't fold laundry, I still put sprinkles on my ice cream. I like lifting heavy things and my favorite colors are pink and purple. I am pro-science. I believe black lives matter, all bodies are good bodies, climate change is real and that womxn have a right to choose. And I acknowledge that although it shouldn't be, womxn's healthcare is political. Social justice and environmental justice are inextricably tied to inequities in maternal healthcare and outcomes. Wellness for womxn means choice and equity in healthcare for ALL womxn. If we're going to work together, it's important to me that you know where I stand on those things. This week we are thrilled to welcome SeQuoia Kemp of Doula4AQueen on to share about her experiences providing support to younger teen parents. SeQuoia shares with us in this episode how her passion for supporting birth started when she herself was a teenager and how those formative experiences & her Black feminist roots impact the doula care she provides now.~SeQuoia discusses how her public health background helps her to look broadly at all the systemic & structural factors that are impacting the pregnant person and may stop them from flourishing as parents.~She explains how she is able to help birthing parents & their families address their own internalized bias around younger pregnancies.~SeQuoia reflects on how teen parents can be encouraged to find joy as they approach parenthood, especially for Black women who often have many social limitations on their joy.~We discuss educational tools and techniques that can help us to connect with younger clientele in engaging, approachable ways.~She will also share the top 3 things we can do as birth professionals to relate to and support our younger clients during labor and birth.Support the show (https://www.paypal.me/yourbirthpartners)

Bec Fagan is a mother, registered midwife and birth support practitioner, Calmbirth educator and qualified acuneedlist (acupuncture by a midwife) from Lismore in NSW. She and her family moved to the Northern Rivers region of NSW for a tree change, seeking a different rhythm of life. Prior to moving rurally, Bec had worked in a tertiary hospital and had supported numerous women through prenatal care and labour. Now Bec works with women both privately and in a hospital setting. She is with women through the many stages of motherhood; preconception, pregnancy, birth preparation into postpartum, the fourth trimester and beyond. Her Lismore based business ‘Empowering Birth Journeys' is a pre and post birth wellness centre that offers additional care. Working privately, independent of the hospital system, allows Bec to move at a different pace and broaden the scope of her birth support offerings/relationships through her personalised continuity of care model. In her work she is with women. She meets their needs, circumstances and experiences, and works with them to make them (and their partners) feel seen and heard. Bec's description of birth doesn't sound like the ‘rural birth' many of us have come to accept/expect. She highlights that although rural care models can be framed by limitation that it doesn't close the door to possibility. She instead shines light on the possibilities and dismantles the limitations. In this interview Bec lists the multitude of birthing, prenatal and postpartum care options available in Lismore. She explains how her business helps rural women make conscious choices through education and support. She shares, regardless of whether she is working with women/couples through birth preparation or birth debrief, that the discussions/strategies she works through are ultimately enabling individuals. She reminds us that ‘anything is possible', and everyone can have a positive birth experience, when we take the time to look inside ourselves and adopt wellness strategies, like calmbirth (because it is a strategy for all births, reducing fear and anxiety on any birth path). https://www.empoweringbirthjourneys.com.au/ Instagram: empowering_birth_journeys

Emma Munnings is from Mongarlowe near Braidwood NSW. She is a mother to five children' Lily, Louis, Gus, Marlo and Theodore. I met Emma through teaching at the local school and we quickly became fast friends. Emma has supported me in numerous ways throughout my time in Braidwood and a year ago she attended my son's birth, to support my husband Lloyd and myself. I was not the first woman Emma supported during labour, she was also present at the birth of another dear friend's son and her sister-in-law's daughter's birth. Emma is a giving woman and as she shares her story with us she gifts her experiences both as a birthing woman and a birth support person; not every one of these births was a ‘rural birth' but discussing the variety of Emma's experiences gave us the opportunity to contrast the availability of prenatal and postpartum care in urban centres compared with rural townships. In my opinion Emma is an unofficial ‘birth expert', she has given birth in a multitude of different ways and not one of her 5 births had a similar run or rhythm. Emma's first born, her daughter Lily, was born in Melbourne CBD at the Royal Women's Hospital Birth Centre and after this first experience Emma intended to use the birth centre again for her second birth but due to a late-term, large-scale bleed, Emma's plans shifted quickly and she gave birth to her first son Louis via caesarean. Her second son Gus was born via VBAC and his birth was blissful under the guidance of a highly experienced midwife at the Canberra Hospital Birth Centre. Her third son, Marlo, was also born via caesarean; however, this was a planned caesarean as he was born early (at 36 weeks) and at a low birth weight. With her fifth and last birth came Theodore. During his birth Emma, her husband Nick and their growing family were living on a rural property in Mongarlowe. Again, Theodore's birth moved at a slightly different rhythm again as Emma's waters were broken by the obstetrician on duty in order to induce labour. This was Emma's first rural birth; however, with the close proximity between Braidwood and Canberra (and as she had family living close to the birth centre) Emma didn't have to do a last-minute dash. She began labouring in Braidwood but travelled to her brother's home while she waited to go into hospital. Emma's stories are broad and highlight how every birth is different. Some of the themes in this podcast may be confronting for women dealing with birth trauma and I wish to highlight that the themes of emergency caesarean, preterm birth and induction are discussed. It was thoroughly enjoyable to chat to Emma. Together we celebrated my son, Shanley's birth (as we come up to the one year anniversary of his birth) and got to reflect again on her own birth stories and how much support she has offered to other women, giving of her own energies to be with women as they birth their first children and begin their journey into motherhood.

Michelle is incredibly honored to feature another one of her mentors in the birth field, Kathy Bradley. With 50 years of combined experience between them, Michelle and Kathy discuss the ways that a doula can reduce stress and fear during the childbearing year. Kathy explains what a doula is, the history of the profession, and the continuity of care doulas provide. She stresses the importance of taking into consideration a doula's birth philosophy as it compares to your desires for your birth, as well as the value her years of experience can bring to you. Kathy shares a powerful technique to help release any negative and limiting beliefs someone may have regarding their ability to give birth. “There is so much fear and so much unrest. And I believe we are in process of women recognizing that through the ages somewhere our voice has been diminished. Our ability to believe in ourselves has been stolen. And so we are working to reclaim that we are powerful human beings. That we can chose powerfully. That we know what our body needs... Because our ability to believe in ourselves and our ability to give birth has been stolen from us. We are in the process of reclaiming that back.”— Kathy Bradley About Kathy Bradley: Spanning a 30 year career in the maternal health field, Kathy is the visionary behind Childbirth Concierge. She holds a degree in Communication and Public Relations, and is a Certified Childbirth Consultant as well as a Board Certified Lactation Consultant. Kathy's focus over the years has been providing education and support to women of all income levels. She worked for 14 years in Maternal Health at Winnie Palmer Hospital in Orlando, Florida. As the founder and executive director of the former Childbirth Enhancement Foundation, she developed partnerships and training programs for community based doula programs with 14 hospitals. Kathy developed the Community Outreach Perinatal Educator Program for Commonsense Childbirth, Inc.- a nonprofit institution dedicated eliminating racial and class disparities in perinatal health and improve birth outcomes for all. She is strongly motivated to support women no matter how they choose to birth or feed their babies.
