Creating a turbo manifold isn't THAT hard but creating one that doesn't fall to pieces in harsh motorsport conditions is a different story. In this episode, we sit down with Full Race's Geoff Raicer — someone who understands turbocharger and manifold development better than most and is more than happy to share what he's learnt... plus a whole lot more.Use RACE50 to get $50 off HPA's 3D Modelling & CAD for Motorsport course: https://hpcdmy.co/CADbFull Race has been around for a long time and has always been known for building some of the best turbo manifolds and turbo kits available — primarily for the Honda, Mitsubishi, and Nissan markets. Geoff and Full Race were even instrumental in bringing Borg Warner's line of EFR turbochargers to the aftermarket and yet, despite that successful history, you won't find a single fabricated exhaust manifold for sale on Full Race's shop these days — so what happened? In this episode, we chart Geoff's journey towards founding Full Race just as the modified import scene began to explode, how his business evolved through some challenging years, and what it's morphed into today — a very different beast from its early days. This is a fascinating story that saw Geoff and his team pivot in an interesting direction during the 2008 financial crisis, involving themselves directly with Borg Warner and later Ford in the development and testing of the 2.3 inline-four and 3.5 V6 EcoBoost engines years before the public saw them. This relationship has continued and we now see a completely different Full Race that puts the majority of its eggs in the Ford basket, pumping out some of the best Raptor 3.5-litre Ecoboost go-fast parts seen anywhere in the world. This episode touches on a wide range of subjects that touches on a wide range of subjects — from the limitations faced by Geoff in the early days of turbocharging, to the secrets to building manifolds that don't fail, to some seriously technical discussions around turbochargers, working with OEMs, the ins and outs of Ford's EcoBoost 3.5 litre V6, plus a whole lot more. If you're planning a big race or street car build, it's worth thinking about how you can harness the power of 3D scanning, CAD, and additive manufacturing on the big jobs. In this episode, BBi Autosport's Dimitri Orlov explains how you can incorporate these tools into your build process, how he utilised them when building the infamous “Hoonipigasus” Porsche 911, and a whole lot more.Use “BBI50” to get $50 OFF your 3D Modelling & CAD for Motorsport course: https://hpcdmy.co/CADbBBi Autosport is one of the best known aftermarket Porsche specialists out there, pumping out a range of high-quality parts and builds over the last decade. Based at the company's California facility, Dimitri is the product development engineer behind it all, despite not having the educational background in mechanical engineering that you might expect of someone in his line of work.Dimitri is self taught, and that gives him a unique perspective on design and manufacturing. He talks us through his design process, and discusses how far technology has come in the last few years — both in terms of what it can achieve and how accessible it's become to the home enthusiast. Dimitri explains how the average person can harness all this tech to drastically trim down the amount of time and money being spent on a serious race or street car build. This then gets us on to the topic of 3D printing final parts in metal, and Dimitri dives into just how useful this technology has become. As he points out — sure, you might not have the capability to print metal at home, but it's now becoming viable to send your design to a third party which can then create the part using its own multi-million dollar printers. The conversation then moves on to Dimitri's most well-known project, the “Hoonipigasus” Porsche 911 hillclimb monster. This is a car that most people will be aware of and think they know a lot about, however Dimitri is able to give us some really interesting insights into the build, its immense challenges, and how he and his team overcame those challenges.Follow Dimitri and BBi Autosport here:IG: @orlovdesign, @bbiautosportYT: BBi AutosportWWW: orlovdesign.com, bbiautosport.com Don't forget, you can use “BBI50” to get $50 OFF your 3D Modelling & CAD for Motorsport course: https://hpcdmy.co/CADbTimestamps:4:06 How did you become passionate about the automotive industry?8:15 How did you learn your skillset?9:57 Does having shop floor experience make you a better designer?11:42 Are there any drawbacks to not having an engineering degree?15:51 When did you start diving into 3D modelling and CAD?20:32 What are the steps from CAD model to actually machining a physical part23:10 What did you do before working for BBI and what is BBI?32:28 Design process.43:06 Choosing the right manufacturing process for the part.51:07 Designing a manifold not just for 1000hp, but to fit and work on a factory vehicle.58:05 How has 3D scanning changed things for BBI?1:06:40 Are there affordable scanners that are worth buying?1:12:10 What CAD software do you use and why?1:20:46 Do you use FEA?1:27:18 What is the Hoonipigisus?1:31:15 Engine and gearbox configuration.1:34:28 Biggest challenge?1:38:49 Challenge of running a drive shaft from a rear trans to front differential?1:41:30 How much of a disadvantage would it have been rear wheel drive?1:48:50 Are there any key aspects you'd do differently?

Is 3D printing going to replace CNC machining in the near future?Even your Mum has probably heard of 3D printing at this point, but what's not so well understood — even by enthusiasts — is just how quickly this technology is advancing, and what's now possible when it comes to making your car faster, stronger, and more capable. One person helping to push that technological envelope is this week's guest, Joe Dopkowski of 3D Systems.Use “3D50” to get $50 OFF our 3D Modelling & CAD for Motorsport Course:https://hpcdmy.co/CADbJoe has a background in mechanical engineering, and previous to working with 3D Systems, he spent time at OEM manufacturers developing parts for new vehicles. A long-time motorsport enthusiast, Joe has been able to combine his interests and work to push technological boundaries in the pursuit of more speed, working with F1 teams and aftermarket companies like BBi Autosport and English Racing. In this conversation, Joe starts out by talking us through the history of 3D printing, but what we're most interested in, is where the tech is at now, and where it's heading in the near future. Joe gets us up to speed here, discussing just how far this field has come in a short amount of time, and exactly what's possible right now with current 3D printing capabilities. This means printing not just prototype plastic parts, but producing ultra-strong, ultra-light finished components from titanium, aluminium, and nearly any other metal you can imagine. This episode goes deep on all things additive manufacturing, and is going to challenge any assumptions you might have about 3D printing. Alderan Resources Ltd (ASX:AL8) managing director Scott Caithness sits down with Propactive's Jonathan Jackson to discuss results from last quarter and upcoming drilling at the New Years copper-gold prospect within its Frisco project in Utah, USA. This decision follows advanced 3D modelling of the historic Cactus-Comet copper-gold mines and detailed analysis using drone magnetics, which revealed multiple promising copper-gold deposit targets. Notably, the New Years prospect is identified by a significant magnetic low anomaly, roughly twice the size of that at Cactus, and is part of a larger complex anomaly encompassing three lows. Positioned 400 metres from Cactus along the NE-SW Cactus Canyon Fault structure, New Years presents potential mineralisation over a 1-kilometre stretch, evidenced by historical shallow drilling results such as 13.7 metres at 2.32% copper. Historically, the area has been underexplored since the 1960s and the existing shallow drilling has not adequately tested the anomaly. Drilling at New Years is scheduled to commence in late Q2 following permitting and site preparation, complemented by soil sampling to prioritise further drilling targets. Simultaneously, Alderan is progressing with a stream and rock sampling program in its seven lithium project areas in Minas Gerais, Brazil. This effort is part of its exploration activities in the region known as Lithium Valley, with initial assay results expected early May. #ProactiveInvestors #AlderanResources #ASX #FriscoProject, #UtahMining, #CopperGoldProspect, #NewYearsProspect, #DroneMagnetics, #3DModelling, #MiningExploration, #CactusComet, #Mineralisation, #Geology, #HistoricalDrilling, #SoilSampling, #DrillingTargets, #LithiumValley, #BrazilLithium, #StreamSampling, #RockSampling, #MiningIndustry, #ResourceExploration #invest #investing #investment #investor #stockmarket #stocks #stock #stockmarketnews

Abitibi Metals Corp CEO Jonathon Deluce joined Steve Darling from Proactive to unveil the company's first comprehensive 3D geological model for the B26 Polymetallic Deposit in Quebec. This milestone follows the company's entry into an option agreement with SOQUEM Inc., through which Abitibi Metals Corp aims to earn an 80% interest in the B26 Polymetallic Deposit over a period of seven years. Deluce shared with Proactive that this newly developed 3D geological model represents a significant advancement in the understanding of the geological controls of mineralization within the B26 Deposit. The model is expected to bolster confidence in mineral potential evaluation and refine ongoing drill planning initiatives. According to the model, the footprint of the deposit extends along a strike length of 1.6 kilometers by 0.8 kilometers at depth, occupying a corridor approximately 150 meters in width. Utilizing Oasis montaj grade modeling, section-to-section interpretation, and insights gleaned from Phase 1 drilling observations, Abitibi Metals Corp has identified high-priority expansion targets and trends both within and outside the main deposit area. These targets are slated for drilling in the second and third quarters of the year, with the company currently finalizing its plans for these activities. In addition to advancing exploration efforts, the company intends to further refine the 3D geological model with new results as assays from over 30 holes from its Phase 1 drill program become available. This iterative approach underscores Abitibi Metals Corp's commitment to leveraging cutting-edge geological modeling techniques to maximize the value of its exploration assets. As Abitibi Metals Corp continues to execute its exploration strategy at the B26 Polymetallic Deposit, investors can anticipate further updates on drilling progress, assay results, and the ongoing refinement of the geological model. This digital event explores how 3D-modelling technologies and virtual reality can open new understandings of the past. Prof Matthew Nicholls describes the creation of a large-scale 3D model of Ancient Rome, exploring the use of computer modelling in the study of ancient structures. Richard Smith brings the technological perspective, discussing the tools which enable the exploration of such a model in virtual reality. The talk will focus particularly on the Theatre of Pompey, a Roman theatre complex, completed in 55 BCE, which no longer survives. Prof Matthew Nichols is Senior Tutor at St. John's College Oxford. He previously held a lectureship and then a chair in Classics at the University of Reading. There he developed a large scale 3D model of ancient Rome, which he has used extensively in teaching, research, outreach, and commercial work, winning several national awards for teaching and innovation. Richard Smith is Technology Support Officer at the Bodleian Libraries, Oxford, where he provides technology support and 3D printing, advises on 3D modelling and AR/VR projects, and leads training courses on immersive technologies. He is also the co-founder of the Oxford X-Reality Hub, Oxford's central resource for virtual and augmented reality. In this episode, we’re talking to Solomon Menashi, the CEO and Co-Founder of BlocksCAD. BlocksCAD is a cloud-based 3D modeling tool that encourages users to learn math, computational thinking and coding concepts through visualization and designing models to be 3D printed.BlocksCAD is a cloud based 3d modelling tool, which means kids and teachers can simply use their web browser and a block-based visual coding language to create 3d shapes. By dragging blocks such as cubes & spheres into the workspace and by applying set operations such as union or difference and combining this with conditional blocks or loops, even complex 3d shapes can be created. While having a lot of fun creating these models, the kids learn about logic, coding and mathematics.

You might not know it, but Melbourne has little earthquakes, even in the city centre and quite frequently. So says Michael Webster, engineering geologist at consulting, design and construction company, Golder Associates, and guest lecturer for the Master of Engineering at the University of Melbourne.“A lot of people know about the earthquakes down in Gippsland or the Otways, but actually in Melbourne itself, there have been earthquakes. You’d have to be a seismic instrument to actually feel these ones but they are there at all depths – some of them quite deep, some of them shallow,” he says. From the geology beneath Melbourne, Michael has created an intricate, three dimensional picture.“There are two lava flows under Melbourne, so you effectively get these beautiful layers cutting across each other, building up over about three to four million years to the present day,” he says.“So, in collaboration with the Arts Centre Melbourne and Development Victoria, we 3D printed a ground model and put on an exhibition at the Testing Grounds in Southbank.“It ran for a few weeks and it was lovely to see people’s interest and connection with the ground.“I’ve always found that geology is one of the more approachable sciences. If people talk about gravity waves it’s absolutely fascinating, but with geology it’s there – it is rivers, volcanos, lava.”Episode recorded: September 17, 2019.Interviewer: Dr Andi Horvath.Producer, editor and audio engineer: Chris Hatzis.Co-production: Silvi Vann-Wall and Dr Andi Horvath.Banner image: Golder Associates.

Andrew Dodson is one of the smartest hackers I know. Our conversations typically happen over coffee and Go (the ancient board game). We talk about physics and simulation theory. In fact, he once loaned me Simulation by Jean Baudrillard and I never returned it (sorry!). In episode 5 of Hacker Practice, I get the real scoop from Andrew. I am deeply interested in sustainable technology. At the moment of writing I live on a small organic farm. My hands are literally dirty from playing in the greenhouse. No lie. That's why I spent most of this episode talking with Andrew about small-scale nuclear power. How can we do this on a farm or even neighborhood scale? Government regulation be damned! Learn the basics of nuclear power and more in today's episode of Hacker Practice. [2:45] Extreme Laser Tag - The greatest idea ever. Graphene Photodiodes TENS Units Extreme laser tag at low-orbit [6:45] A welcome interruption from Dodson’s colleague, Matthias the super genius. Postdoc gerbils A brief peek inside a stealth nuclear startup... [8:20] Andrew discusses boundaries necessary for working in startups “People show who they are in their face” “Startups can be... top heavy” “These faces raise money… to get real people you need to be real people” [10:30] Molten salt reactors Ionic Compounds Alternative to traditional light water reactors Uranium fuel rods get hot, very hot. How neutrons bouncing around cause nuclear chain reactions in enriched uranium fuel rods [17:20] Components of a reactor [18:20] Why higher temperatures are desirable Why higher temperatures can be dangerous “Spray a bunch of people with steam… coming out of a pressurized water reactor...that you can’t see… it’ll cut you in half.” It’s all just a way to spin a pinwheel [20:00] How to get started with nuclear engineering at home 3D Modelling and simulating the reaction Monte Carlo simulations CAE Linux (http://caelinux.com/CMS/) OpenMC (https://mit-crpg.github.io/openmc/) Serpent (http://montecarlo.vtt.fi/) The future of nuclear engineering is VR [26:20] How could we put one of these nuclear reactors in your back yard In the early days, small cores were all the rage Highly enriched uranium is useful here (10-20 cm across) High quality uranium fuel is a “political risk” Where to find 99% enriched uranium Building a vehicle-sized nuclear bomb [29:20] What about Fukushima? Chernobyl Three Mile Island They are blown out of proportion according to Dodson Fossil fuels kill millions every year. Relatively, nuclear is extremely safe Our generation (Y) needs to pursue this, NOW. [31:25] Powering a farm with nuclear Security concerns [34:00] An ideal world where security is not a problem Bury a cargo container with a reactor and turbine on the surface Power my neighborhood for 40 years Small reactors power aircraft carriers Nuclear engineering secrets (hint: they’re military) [36:30] Sources of fuel-quality Uranium Downblending Different grades of Uranium (civilian, weapons, etc) How much Uranium costs per kilogram and where to get it [38:30] Got the fuel, now what? Shielding considerations Burying the tank [39:00] We built the reactor, what are my security precautions? During operation In case of a breach/leak Radioactive worms Basically: keep as much of it underground as you can Worst-case scenario Why you should eat plenty of spinach and fish [51:15] Where to find Andrew (andrewmdodson@gmail.com) Reach out to Andrew with the project you’re working on, it’s current status, and what your role is on the project.

3D modelling and monitoring of Indonesian peatlands aiming at global climate change mitigation

Tropical peat swamp forests in Indonesia are highly threatened ecosystems. As a result of economic development during the past two decades, they have been subjected to intensive logging, drainage and conversion to plantation estates, especially for oil palm. The Indonesian peatlands are one of the largest near-surface reserves of terrestrial organic carbon. However, ongoing rapid peat decomposition due to drainage and attendant recurrent fires have recently caused the release of huge amounts of this carbon into the atmosphere as carbon dioxide. If these large emissions from degrading peatlands are taken into account, Indonesia is one of the largest emitters of CO2 worldwide. Within the context of the ongoing discussions concerning climate change, the importance of peatlands as carbon stores is increasingly recognised by the public, accompanied by a demand for conservation and restoration. Therefore, this thesis utilises innovative geospatial 3D modelling and remote sensing techniques to study the Indonesian peatlands with the overall aim of global climate change mitigation. Previous estimates of the total amount of carbon stored in the Indonesian peatlands could be improved by applying 3D modelling based on a combined analysis of satellite imagery and in situ peat thickness measurements. At least 55±10 Gt of carbon are stored in Indonesia’s peatlands. With this huge carbon storage and the current rate of degradation, the tropical peatlands of Indonesia have the power to negatively influence the global climate. Large-scale peatland restoration is needed to prevent further greenhouse gas emissions. This thesis shows that successful rewetting of a 590 km² large area of drained peat swamp forest could result in mitigated emissions of 1.4-1.6 Mt CO2 yearly, and can be achieved with relatively little effort and at low costs. Multitemporal radar satellite imagery proved to be capable of monitoring the effect of hydrological restoration measures on peat soil moisture and groundwater levels in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia. Satellite remote sensing allows continuous large-scale tropical peatland monitoring, compared to only punctual, temporally limited field measurements. This is particularly important for initiatives aiming at carbon trading on the voluntary carbon market or under the REDD (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation) mechanism, which both constitute significant financing schemes for conservation and rehabilitation of Indonesia’s peatlands.
