Appalachian Roadside Theater Tackles Democracy Without a ‘Fourth Wall’

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 9, 2025 45:17

Roadside Theater is a professional ensemble of storytellers and theater makers hailing from the mountains of central Appalachia. In its decades since its founding in 1975, the ensemble has taken on the task of people's theater, engaging social issues and abandoning the ‘fourth wall' concept in order to bring audiences into the process of cultural production. Roadside Theater reflects Appalachian culture, but it has also worked over decades to build theater in solidarity with social struggles across social constructs, including in close connection with the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee and their associated theater troupes, Free Southern Theater and Junebug Productions. On today's show, we're joined by editors and contributors to a new book that documents that history, called Art In A Democracy. We're joined by the book's editor, Ben Fink, who worked with Roadside Theater from 2015 until 2020, and co-founded the East Kentucky–Western Massachusetts cross-partisan dialogue project Hands Across the Hills. We're also joined by Donna Porterfield, the Managing Director of Roadside Theater from 1979 to 2019, with oversight responsibility for all of the theater's personnel and financial matters; as well as AB Spellman, a poet and essayist as well as a jazz critic and enthusiast, and a figure in the Black Arts Movement who worked for about 30 years at the National Endowment of the Arts. Pinkwashing and purplewashing are tools of Israeli propaganda that build a narrative around the Jewish state as a haven for women and queer people. The Zionist arguments for these themes include statements like: Hamas would kill queer people or trans people, and that on the far opposite side Israel's legal system protects those groups. It's a framework that pits queer folks and women against Palestine, and in support of Israel. But activists say pink- and purple-washing are part of a false propaganda machine. Sudan’s Civil War Continues as Famine and Cholera Spread w/ Vijay Prashad

Two years ago, a fragile but hopeful peace in Sudan was broken when the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) – which are both arms of the Sudanese state – went to war with each other. In the fighting since, more than 150,000 people have been killed and 13 million of a total of a 51 million person population, have been displaced. Famine is currently significant. And there are renewed reports of cholera tearing through the region, which has led to corpses rotting in the nile river, according to an Al Jazeera report.  But during these past two years of civil war, most media that covers international affairs and violence, and this includes us at KPFA, has focused on international coverage elsewhere, failing to give proper attention to the conflict in Sudan, often writing it off because we don't have strong contacts or because the war is somehow over our heads.  We're joined in conversation about the violence in Sudan, it's causes and potential pathways out, by Vijay Prashad, a historian and writer, and the executive director of the Tricontinental: Institute for Social Research, which recently produced its 20th newsletter, titled “A Language of Blood Has Gripped Our World,” addressing the conflict in Sudan. Schooling and the Construction of American Racism w/ Eve L Ewing

Regular listeners of this show know that we frequently explore interpretations and nuances of abolition. When we think of abolition, we often conjure Angela Davis' articulation, that prisons are a way of disappearing people and the social problems that are associated with those people. From that framing, abolition tells us to rethink the social problems being disappeared by prisons, in order to address those problems, as a space from which to grow, where no one person, regardless of how exceptional or not, they are, is disposable. Where the social problems people have engaged with, or experienced, or been structured by, have social solutions, as opposed to locking them away, while making no real changes. On today's show, we add more layers: How embedded are these social issues, in the United States? How were they not only created, but institutionalized and maintained in just about every one of our, life, if not day to day, experiences? Our guest today draws clear and direct lines between the civilizing project that was the conquest of the land that the United States is on, the genocide of indigenous peoples of this land, the institutional formation of enslavement of Black people in its both economic and social functions, and the creation and reinforcment of the idea of citizenship, embedded in every one of our institutions – starting, with schools and schooling, where our young folks learn about their roles, their access, and a false idea of American exceptionalism that still now binds a colonial nexus of success with whiteness and christianity, and embeds economic accumulation as the primary priority of not only our working lives, but our very identities. We're joined now by award-winning author, scholar, cultural organizer, and poet Eve L Ewing, who is from Chicago, now working as a professor at University of Chicago, and a former middle school teacher in that city. Today, we'll be talking about her latest book, Original Sins: The (Mis)education of Black and Native Children and the Construction of American Racism. —- Subscribe to this podcast: https://plinkhq.com/i/1637968343?to=page Get in touch: lawanddisorder@kpfa.org Follow us on socials @LawAndDis: https://twitter.com/LawAndDis; https://www.instagram.com/lawanddis/ The post Schooling and the Construction of American Racism w/ Eve L Ewing appeared first on KPFA.
