Throughout history, the concept of Blackness has been remarkably intertwined with another color- blue. In daily life, it is evoked in countless ways. Blue skies and blue water offer hope for a life beyond the current conditions. But blue is also the color of deep melancholy and heartache, echoing Louis Armstrong's question, ”What did I do to be so Black and blue?” In Black in Blues, celebrated author Imani Perry uses the world's favorite color as a springboard for a riveting emotional, cultural, and spiritual journey-an examination of race and Blackness that transcends politics or ideology. Porter, who lived in Compton, was a member of Black Lives Matter–Los Angeles. In a statement, the organization said a vigil was organized not only to memorialize his life, but also to demand an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding his killing. Advocates raised concerns about accountability when law enforcement officers — including federal agents — use deadly force while off duty. — Subscribe to this podcast: https://plinkhq.com/i/1637968343?to=page Get in touch: lawanddisorder@kpfa.org Follow us on socials @LawAndDis: https://twitter.com/LawAndDis; https://www.instagram.com/lawanddis/ The post Dr. Melina Abdullah on Deadly Off-Duty ICE Killing in Los Angeles appeared first on KPFA.

On today's episode — New York City mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani ran on an ambitious progressive agenda, but dismantling the deeply entrenched and largely self-governing New York City Police Department may not be part of the plan. In a recent Wired investigation, journalist Ali Winston examines what Mamdani's early governing choices signal about the future of policing and surveillance in the city. Mamdani surprised supporters by asking current Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain after his inauguration. A technocrat and heir to a major real estate fortune, Tisch sharply disagrees with Mamdani on key issues, from bail reform and policing policy to geopolitical questions that routinely surface on New York City streets. While Mamdani is openly pro-Palestinian, Tisch's family are influential figures in the Israel lobby. One area where their paths may converge is the NYPD's vast surveillance infrastructure. Built up over decades and largely shielded from public oversight, the department's network of cameras, data systems, and intelligence-sharing tools has turned New York into one of the most heavily monitored cities in the country. On this episode we speak with Mac Muir, author of Cop Cop: Breaking the Fixed System of American Policing, about the culture, incentives, and training that shape modern policing in the United States. Drawing on personal experience and extensive research, Muir examines how policing is structured to reward control and compliance over public safety, and why reform efforts so often fail. We discuss the myths that sustain police power, the limits of accountability within the current system, and what real change would require for communities most impacted by policing. — Subscribe to this podcast: https://plinkhq.com/i/1637968343?to=page Get in touch: lawanddisorder@kpfa.org Follow us on socials @LawAndDis: https://twitter.com/LawAndDis; https://www.instagram.com/lawanddis/ The post Cop Cop: Breaking the Fixed System of American Policing w/ Mac Muir appeared first on KPFA.
