On today's episode — New York City mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani ran on an ambitious progressive agenda, but dismantling the deeply entrenched and largely self-governing New York City Police Department may not be part of the plan. In a recent Wired investigation, journalist Ali Winston examines what Mamdani's early governing choices signal about the future of policing and surveillance in the city. Mamdani surprised supporters by asking current Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain after his inauguration. A technocrat and heir to a major real estate fortune, Tisch sharply disagrees with Mamdani on key issues, from bail reform and policing policy to geopolitical questions that routinely surface on New York City streets. While Mamdani is openly pro-Palestinian, Tisch's family are influential figures in the Israel lobby. One area where their paths may converge is the NYPD's vast surveillance infrastructure. Built up over decades and largely shielded from public oversight, the department's network of cameras, data systems, and intelligence-sharing tools has turned New York into one of the most heavily monitored cities in the country. Sudan's brutal two-year war has entered a new phase. The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces has seized control of the entire Darfur region, ousting the Sudanese army from its last stronghold. The conflict has killed over 40,000 people and displaced more than 14 million, creating a humanitarian crisis. Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo, has roots in the Darfur genocide and has been accused of atrocities. Dagalo's forces have expanded their power and influence, leading to a power struggle with Sudan's army chief that plunged Sudan into war. The capture of el-Fasher, North Darfur's capital, raises fears of Sudan splitting again, nearly 15 years after South Sudan's independence. The RSF, led by Gen. Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo, has roots in the Darfur genocide and has been accused of atrocities. Dagalo's forces have expanded their power and influence, leading to a power struggle with Sudan's army chief that plunged Sudan into war. We'll dive deep into this story on today's episode with Rachel Savage, the Guardian's southern Africa correspondent based in Johannesburg. She recently published the article “Grave fears for civilians after Sudanese paramilitary claims capture of El Fasher” __ Subscribe to this podcast: https://plinkhq.com/i/1637968343?to=page Get in touch: lawanddisorder@kpfa.org Follow us on socials @LawAndDis: https://twitter.com/LawAndDis; https://www.instagram.com/lawanddis/ The post Crisis in Sudan w/ Rachel Savage from the Guardian appeared first on KPFA.

Hurricane Melissa is set to pummel Jamaica as a catastrophic Category 5 storm, the strongest to lash Jamaica since recordkeeping began 174 years ago. Forecasters said the storm is expected to make landfall early Tuesday and slice diagonally across the island, entering near St. Elizabeth parish in the south and exiting around St. Ann parish in the north. Hours before the storm, the government said it had done all it could to prepare as it warned of catastrophic damage. Prime Minister Andrew Holness said, “There is no infrastructure in the region that can withstand a Category 5. The question now is the speed of recovery. That's the challenge.” Hurricane Melissa is also impacting Haiti and surrounding island countries. We speak with Pierre Labossiere. Pierre grew up in Haiti and co-founded the Haiti Action Committee in 1990. He lives in Oakland and is heavily involved in solidarity work with Haiti, including webinars and protests. __ Subscribe to this podcast: https://plinkhq.com/i/1637968343?to=page Get in touch: lawanddisorder@kpfa.org Follow us on socials @LawAndDis: https://twitter.com/LawAndDis; https://www.instagram.com/lawanddis/ The post Hurricane Melissa Impacts Haiti w/ Pierre Labossiere from Haiti Action appeared first on KPFA.
