I had Will & Max of the band Dosser (Baltimore, MD) on for this one. Their EP labeled "Brainscan" came out at the beginning of the year. Brainscan takes its name from a 90's sci-fi/horror movie starring Edward Furlong. The movie shows a young teenager transition from being someone who is constantly playing video games to a serial killer. One of the big subjects Dosser wrote about on this EP and for future songs is not truly knowing what someone is going through on the inside. It's easy to portray a happy life through social media, but for some people, that does not tell the full story. They have hidden stress that the world does not know about or sees. Like so many other artists over the past year, mental health has become a main theme of song writing. Mostly because we have been isolated due to a pandemic, but also the demands of being young in this world begins to creep in. There is this preconceived notion that everyone should follow a path of going to college, having a family, etc. but people don't talk about the loads of stess from needing to find a job that seeks years of experience and having a bunch of debt. Will and Bret talk about current societies pressure put on people and the anxiety that starts to come with it in their lyrics. Nature is everywhere you go. Beautiful forever....... Producers Shakib Jakir and Eric Shans team up for this Canopy exclusive mix which highlights tracks coming on the Canopy Sounds label over the remainder of 2020. Shakib Jakir started his musical journey at a very young age. He grew up learning Indian classical music at the age of 4 playing harmony with his father. For years he played the bass, but his love for the melodic structures of deep house & techno drew him to produce his own crafted electronic creations. He learned production from some of his very close and talented friends, but his unique sound and production style came so naturally that he has since then taken his own path where he often blends beautiful strings, organic drums, and world sounds. Eric met Shakib a few years back on Soundcloud of all places when Shakib heard some of Eric's productions. He has been making music for two decades that range from ambient, to synth driven house, and electronic pop, and everywhere in between, while also running his own labels. The two have since built a lasting friendship which has since blossomed into a true production team. They've worked on many things over their time of knowing each other but now they've finally honed on a sound that truly works for both of them. Shakib and Eric's mix demonstrates the Canopy motif which is memorable, soul enriching music that stems from the heart's core. 3 of their tracks, "Yuhi"(Sunset), "Empyrean", and "Ardour" from their forthcoming Canopy EP "Ardour" can be heard on this exclusive mix. Their EP is set to be released in September. It's a conversation (recorded from inside a closet) with local metalcore outfit Epirus! We talked about their upcoming EP, life as a band during the pandemic, easycore (which was a new one on me), and much more. This episode is slightly shorter than usual, because there's only one song as opposed to the usual four. Their EP isn't out yet, so the only track we used in the podcast was the debut single, "It's Not Me". This episode is brought to you by our friends the Dirty Beat and Jared Adams. Don’t forget to help out our pals at the Park Theatre! Huge thanks to everyone who supports the podcast on Patreon. You can help out for as little as $1 a month if you like the show and want to throw some change in the guitar case!

AIRSIDE is an American rock band from Memphis TN that formed in mid 2014. Their high-energy live shows incorporate a blend of dynamic original material and familiar covers. The band members had attracted major media attention; earning feature spots on ABC and CBS as well as a licensing deal with The Orpheum Theatre’s “Summer Movie Series”. In the spring of 2016, the group embarked on their first European tour of Poland and Estonia. In October 2016, Airside was the featured artist for the Lone Star Emmy Awards in Fort Worth, Texas to highly favorable response. The group headed into Royal Studios with 3-time Grammy winner, engineer/producer Lawrence “Boo” Mitchell (John Mayer, Mark Ronson, Bruno Mars) to work on their debut album. Their EP, On The Run, was released on April 28th, 2017, and their full-length record will be released in the fall.
This one time at rad camp… Kyle and Matthew welcomed Grant Bubar, our youngest guest ever, to talk about Marching Band and Marching Band related memories! This week they talk quads, snares, timpanis and more! French horns are hard. Choir kids suck. And band camp is where you go to test the limits of hydration. But really this episode just turns into a middle school boy free-for-all as they talk about band trip make outs and fingering... like way more than appropriate. And Matt addresses the rumor about whether trumpet players are good at going down on girls (hint: "clenching my embouchure"). Natalie rolls her eyes through most of the episode until she’s caught looking at pictures of Pokemon, so who is she to judge? Grant is in a band called The Ladyfingers! Their EP is called "Couches"! “When Ava Antonie, Ava Gessner and Lola Flores met at the first annual GirlsRock MKE camp in the summer of 2013, they were three young kids just looking to have fun and make some noise. The girls were 8, 9 and 10-yrs old, respectively, and not once did their age make them think they couldn’t do something big. From their very first show in a local bar on a school night, six months after becoming friends and band mates, Negative/Positive has offered beguiling lyrics and three strong role models for wannabe rockers of all ages and genders. Their self-contained battle cry is a string of catchy, indie rock singles featuring Gessner’s nimble vocals and guitar, Flores’ throbbing bass, and Antonie’s big beat. “The girls, students from three different Milwaukee Public Schools (Burdick, Golda Meir, and Fernwood Montessori), continue to create their own music without the aid of outside composers or adult assistance. After saving the profits from t-shirt sales over a period of two years, they recorded and released their first album, Lumanescent, in August 2016. Their EP features five original singles with self-penned lyrics that reference experiences they love and things they despise. “The girls currently don’t have some big, master plan to get signed or wow the world with their sound. Instead, they just want to keep having fun and make a lot more noise.
On this episode, I speak with local reggae band Space Koi! Their EP, Skank Jam, is full of fun, exciting songs with classic punk, reggae, and blues vibes, all with a special Richmond twist. We talk a little bit about how each member of the band has been connected deeply to music from a very young age, and how that has shaped their love of music and their desire to create. Also, we spoke about the recording process, and Garrett offers a few tips about how to record while on a budget. They also describe some of the hardships of pursuing a life in music, and reveal the fact that most of their time is spent working on music in some way. Don't forget to check out Space Koi at Emilio's every first Wednesday of the month (the next show being 11/2)! Allison, Don, and Noah discuss three topics of incomparable importance, and end with an anecdote each about something in Israel that made them smile this week. Netanyahu’s Ministry of Magic? We discuss the odd new ministerial alchemy that produced a “Minister of Space” and other strange concatenations. Did PM Netanyahu create bullshit ministries for bullshit reasons, destined to produce bullshit results - all to silence critics and reward friends? Religious fanatics or Godless heathens? A world-wide poll recently carried out by the WIN/Gallup Organization found that Israel is one of the least religious countries in the world. This conflicts with other findings - that in Israel religion is very important to most, growing more important by the day. Short trip from cradle to grave We discuss the ultra-Orthodox woman from Bnei Brak, who through the first 46 years of marriage was unable to conceive, and who achieved the positively biblical feat of giving birth to her first child at the age of 65. Is Israel a little too baby crazy? Playlist: All songs by Shelly & Rotem, in honor of their show this week at Levontin 7. Their EP, Between Shores, is on Bandcamp. Panda presents Deejay Delta and Vaptor. Deejay Delta started in electronic music as a member of the amiga demoscene in which he wrote arcade-like music with basic computer synthesizers. At the dawn of the new century, Deejay Delta moved into Drum & Bass. After a while, his music was signed to many labels. Coincidentally enough, around 2004 (when I just started in D&B as Peet, later Panda) he even released on my own label Foundname Records. Times have changes as his tunes have now been breaking from the underground and being played by Drum & Bass majors. Now partnering up with Vaptor, the duo is ambitious as ever to push their sound to prominence.
