And ye, beneath life's crushing load, Whose forms are bending low, Who toil along the climbing wayWith painful steps and slow, Look now! for glad and golden hoursCome swiftly on the wing: O rest beside the weary load, And hear the angels sing. For lo, the days are hastening on, By prophet seen of old, When, with the ever-circling years, Shall come the time foretold, When the new heaven and earth shall ownThe Prince of Peace their King, And the whole world send back the songWhich now the angels sing. Away in a MangerAway in a manger, no crib for a bed, The little Lord Jesus laid down His sweet head. The stars in the sky all looked down where He lay, The little Lord Jesus, asleep on the hay. The cattle are lowing, the baby awakes, The little Lord Jesus, no crying He makes. I love Thee, Lord Jesus! Look down from the sky, and stay by my side until morning is nigh. Be near me, Lord Jesus! I ask Thee to stay Close by me forever, and love me, I pray. Bless all the dear children in Thy tender care, And fit us for heaven, to live with Thee there. Silent NightSilent night, holy night, All is calm, all is bright Round yon virgin mother and child. Holy infant so tender and mild, Sleep in heavenly peace, Sleep in heavenly peace. Silent night, holy night, Shepherds quake at the sight. Glories stream from heaven afar, Heavenly host sing alleluia; Christ, the Savior, is born! Christ, the Savior, is born! Silent night, holy night, Son of God, love's pure light Radiant beams from Thy holy face, With the dawn of redeeming grace, Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth, Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth.

First of all, we've had a bit of a "situation" over here, and I'll share all the details in today's intro. But here's a little teaser: neighbors, overgrown shrubs, and me sneaking out in the cloak of darkness. If that doesn't paint a picture that'll make you want to listen, I don't know what will!
If Christmas commemorates the birth of Jesus, and we celebrate it on December 25, then Jesus must have been born on that day, right? Not so fast! We actually have no good idea when Jesus was born. And besides, the observance of his birth on December 25 is a 4th century contrivance. But why December 25 of all days? In today's episode, professor and author Michael Foley joins Brian to make sense of it all.

WAZZZZZUUUUUPPPPP! It's that special time of year again, when the boss reverts to his glory days of being a 90s video game boss and forces the entire GAMECORP staff to pretend they're back in the age of Blockbuster, Polly Pocket, & All-Time-High-Murder-Rates. Ohhhh yeah, the Nineties! A decade filled with nostalgia of cheap toys, flashy merchandise, and unchecked consumerism. So, to celebrate the boys are gifting each other their most favorite, nostalgic, childhood games and talking about why they are so special to them. But, has the staff finally had enough of reliving the old days? Will the allure of modern slang and fiber internet speeds prove too tempting, and will the boss be overthrown out on his ass on Christmas? Well, you don't wait for Dec 25th to find out, because we are releasing this episode out early as our gift to you! You're welcome.. Yes yes.. we know, we are the best... Strictly speaking, a Christmas carol is a song that tells the Nativity story. That's what made Edmund Sears's song, "It Came Upon the Midnight Clear" so unusual when he wrote it. It didn't tell the story of Jesus's birth; it told the story of how people reacted to the news. This "humanist carol" arrived at a time when music itself was in the midst of some major changes. Besides some solid answers across the board, we get more taco (stand) beef, more taco meat love, and more Joshritos. HOLIDAY FEATURE: Matt & Shannon Heaton One of the lovely things about Celtic music is the fact that just a couple of people can make a whole lot of music, and this is certainly true when it comes to Matt & Shannon Heaton. This music duo offers flute/guitar/bouzouki and sweet, sweet harmony vocals in arrangements that are quite lovely. Deeply involved in the Boston traditional music scene, the pair plays together seamlessly, and the enthusiasm that they have for the music really comes through. There's a genuineness that is unmistakeable grounding their play. A husband and wife team can certainly telegraph their collective love for the music--and the sheer fun they have playing together. This one does it better than most. The two are definitely experienced, and surround themselves with music in many different ways. Shannon has her own podcast, Irish Music Stories, and she's also the co-founder of Boston's Celtic music fest, which undoubtedly expanded her vision and abilities in the field. Matt is front man for another band, the "surf-rock" Electric Heaters, and performs with a wide range of bands and musicians when he's not playing with Shannon. Each an accomplished musician in their own right, the blend of the two is a true celebration of musical talent—dosed with a wholesome affection for the Celtic sound. It's a pleasure to hear them play. The couple's Christmas song collection is filled with a little bit of everything. You'll find fresh holiday fare as well as traditional favorites like “O Little Town of Bethlehem” and “It Came Upon the Midnight Clear” to sing along to. Irish music lovers will appreciate the jigs and reels that are included in the mixture, and there's certainly enough here to fill a holiday party to the brim with some good cheer. Don't miss “Julius the Christmas Cat”—it couldn't be any sweeter, and is sure to be a favorite for those who love their feline friends. Nothing like a cute little "story song" to get in the holiday spirit! Other notable tracks in this collection include “Christmas in Mt. Horeb” and “Wexford Carol,” but there really isn't a bad track on the compilation. There's 13 tracks offered here, and listeners who love the flute will really be pleased, as it appears often on these tracks. Soft harmonies and easy strumming on the guitar are other hallmarks of what this holiday album is all about. There's little doubt this will have a place in any rotation of Christmas music where an updated Celtic sound is welcomed. You can find out more about them at https://mattandshannonheaton.com/ IF YOU ENJOY THIS ARTIST... Follow them on streaming and add one of their songs to your playlist. You can also buy music from them, sign up to their mailing list and share this episode on social media. The Celtic Christmas Podcast is free to enjoy. Emily goes with an old-school hymn for her advent song, as she helps us see how It Came Upon a Midnight Clear wasn't just for the moment of Jesus' first coming but a reminder of his return. As believers, we can both rejoice with good news and still sit with the reality of darkness and brokenness, knowing that Jesus comes to heal all in the end.
