Are the boundaries of reality as firm as we believe, or is there more to our world than meets the eye? Imagine a world where the signing of the Treaty of Paris echoes through time, where Mark Twain's birth ignites a spark of endless creativity, and London's 'Magic Fog' of 1936 reveals hidden truths. Picture a meteorite not just as a celestial object, but as a messenger from the cosmos, and envision ancient Egyptian secrets unlocking mystical powers. Joseph Goldstein explores the path to freedom that the Buddha laid out for all of us and talks about the importance of developing and sustaining the quality of ardor in our practice. This podcast is sponsored by BetterHelp. Click to receive 10% off your first month with your own licensed professional therapist: betterhelp.com/insighthour“What is ardency? I think we all have some sense of it in our very worldly lives. Just think of the feeling of ardor in the great love of your life, or in the first days of the great love of your life. What is that feeling of ardor like? There's this powerful and sustained energy that is just so full in us. And it's characterized by tremendous warmth of feeling and passion and enthusiasm and interest. That's what ardor means. So can we cultivate that kind of ardor in our love of the Dhamma? In our love of the truth? That's the quality that the Buddha is saying we need that, we need that passionate interest, that passionate energy to explore and discover.” – Joseph GoldsteinIn this episode, Joseph talks about:The path to freedom that lies in Vipassana practices and how these practices are rooted in the Buddha's discourse, the Satipatṭhāna SuttaThe deeper meaning of some of the Pali words used in that discourse and why the Buddha frequently repeats some phrasesThe importance of developing and sustaining the quality of ardor in our practiceHow reflecting on the preciousness of human birth and understanding impermanence can help cultivate ardorHow Metta practice works together with Vipassana practiceHow we begin to see that practice is not just for ourselves, but for the benefit of the whole worldThis dharma talk from September 27, 2004, was originally published on Dharma Seed.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Tears for Fears comes from Bath, England, and were formed by Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith. Their first album, "The Hurting" was released in 1983 and was successful with songs like "Mad World" and "Pale Shelter." However, their second album entitled Songs from the Big Chair, a title taken from the motion picture "Sybil" would be the one to propel them to super-stardom. It peaked at number 2 in the UK and number 1 in the US. In addition to Orzabal and Smith, Ian Stanley is on keyboards, and Manny Elias is on drums and drum arrangement.Orzabal and Smith were inspired by electronic and synth-pop bands like Depeche Mode, Soft Cell, and Orchestral Manoeuvers in the Dark. They started off as a duo initially called History of Headaches. The name Tears for Fears comes from primal therapy, a psychological treatment developed by Arthur Janov.Shortly after their follow-up third album ”The Seeds of Love,” Orzabal and Smith had a big falling out, breaking up the band in 1991. They would get back together in 2000, and are still touring and releasing albums today. Everybody Wants to Rule the WorldThis is the signature song from the album. Bassist Curt Smith takes the lead vocals, and the lyrics are about the desire for power and about corruption. It was a last minute addition to the album and was recorded in two weeks as the final track to be laid down. ShoutThe lead-off track and second single to the album features Orzabal on lead vocals. While many think this is about primal scream theory, Orzabal has said it is actually more about political protest.BrokenThis is a short piece with lyrics that have an angst-ridden declaration that we are all broken. It is also commonly played in concert just in front of the next piece which also reprises Broken at the end. Head Over HeelsThis is your classic “boy obsesses over girl” song. It was released as the fourth single from the album, but it had been bouncing around for about 2 years along with Broken. Orzabal takes vocal lead on this one. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Neutron Dance by The Pointer Sisters (from the motion picture "Beverly Hills Cop”)Eddie Murphy's Beverly Hills Cop propelled both his career and this song originally appearing on a 1983 album to the top. STAFF PICKS:If I Had A Rocket Launcher by Bruce CockburnWayne launches the staff picks with a protest song from Canada's own Bruce Cockburn. The song lyrics tell the story from the perspective of the villagers experiencing warfare but being powerless to do anything about it.Valotte by Julian LennonRob brings us the title track from Julian Lennon's debut studio album. The resemblance between Julian and his father are obvious. Many think the river referenced is the Tennessee River near Muscle Shoals where portions of the album were recorded.I Can't Hold Back by SurvivorBrian demonstrates that Survivor wasn't a one-hit wonder after all. It starts with a nice acoustic guitar and builds quickly. This single reached number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100. This is the first album with Jimi Jamison on lead vocals.Sunset Grill by Don HenleyBruce finishes off the staff picks with the ex Eagles' single that hit number 22 on the Billboard Hot 100. The Sunset Grill is a hamburger restaurant on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles. The Austrian restaurant owner didn't know that his frequent visitor was Don Henley until after the song came out, making their hole-in-the-wall burger joint famous. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Listen by the Tears for FearsWe do a little double-dipping with this (almost) instrumental from "Songs From the Big Chair."

This is my Father's world: The battle is not done; Jesus who died shall be satisfied, And earth and heaven be one. Immortal, Invisible, God Only WiseImmortal, invisible, God only wise, In light inaccessible hid from our eyes, Most blessed, most glorious, the Ancient of Days, Almighty, victorious, Thy great name we praise. Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light, Nor wanting, nor wasting, Thou rulest in might; Thy justice like mountains high soaring above Thy clouds, which are fountains of goodness and love. To all, life Thou givest, to both great and small; In all life Thou livest, the true life of all; We blossom and flourish as leaves on the tree, And wither and perish—but naught changeth Thee. What it means to be 100% human in today's modern worldThis week on the sacred changemakers podcast, I have a different kind of episode for you. I was recently asked to speak on the 100% Human podcast with podcast host Karen Allen. Now Karen and I have known each other for a few years and our work is very aligned, so I said yes, and last week we recorded that interview. And here's the thing, Karen and I had a riveting conversation, a true dialogue that I really wanted to share with all of you, so you're getting a sneak peek before it is published on the new 100% human podcast in July. A big thank you to Karen for allowing me to do this for all of you… Let me tell you a little about Karen because you are going to hear from both of us in today's episode: Karen is a TEDx speaker and founder of 100% Human. In her previous career, Karen worked in HR and Talent Management. However, when she experienced an unexpected tragedy, the trajectory of her life changed forever. Determined to rebuild her life, Karen discovered mindset habits and lifestyle changes that helped her find her way back to a whole heart. This inspired her to help others jumpstart their mental strength training. Karen's client list includes AT&T, Kaiser Permanente, Travelers Insurance, NBC's Golf Channel, Hubspot, Universal Orlando Parks & Resorts, Sprint, and many more! Her work has been featured in Forbes, SHRM Magazine, Good Morning America, MSNBC, and many others! She's also a regular contributor to Arianna Huffington's THRIVE Global community. Today Karen and I talk about our own journeys that include healing from life-halting trauma to finding our own unique way to business success, we discuss business/leadership and also what we've learned from the Covid-19 global pandemic. We both feel passionate about this time of transformation that we're all living through, and taking responsibility for playing our part in consciously shaping a better world for us all to enjoy. We touched on so many aspects of life, from the energy that animates all things to the invisible connections in between. Listen in as we both discuss what matters most to each of us right now, of bringing humanity back into the world of business and breaking through the invisible challenges of our time, especially around mental health and wellbeing. Key Takeaways How we each overcame life-halting traumas to come back to life Why energetic resonance matters How we can show up whole to life What we've both learned from the Covid-19 pandemic What you can do to make a difference Memorable Quote “What if we could just start by accepting that life is uncertain, it gives you the freedom to make the most of the moment that you're in, even if it is a tough moment, even if it is challenging you can still be fully present. Your work can become the flow that sends energy out into the world” - Karen Allen Episode Resources: http://www.karenallen.co/ (Karen's Website) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BypYSAzxyyY&t=88s (Karen's TEDx Talk) http://sacredchangemakers.com/ (SacredChangemakers.com) https://sacredchangemakers.com/community/ (Our Sacred Community) https://www.linkedin.com/company/sacred-changemakers/ (Sacred Changemakers on LinkedIn) If you would like to support our show: Please rate, review and subscribe to the podcast on iTunes and other podcast platforms. Follow the LightJohn 8:12–20IntroductionC.S. Lewis once said, “I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.”I love that quote because what he's saying is that Christianity not just an abstract truth, it's also something that brings sense to the world.Maybe C.S. Lewis took this from Ps 36:9, which says, “In your light we see light.”When you turn on the TV, pull up YouTube, or look at a Twitter feed, you're instantly met with a cacophony of voices. People bloviating about the world, politics, injustices, all kinds of other things, and if you don't have a reliable reference point, the world can feel like a black oil spill that you're sloshing around in, with people pulling you in their direction from all sides.I sometimes feel like that, but then I like to just pause and think about how refreshing it is to remember that we have a beacon of light to follow. We have a compass that doesn't spin around with the whims of society. It points to one person––Jesus. HE is the light of the world, and whoever follows him will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life. That's the verse I'm going to focus on this morning. The OccasionThis is six months before Jesus will be crucified. Booths is in October, Jesus is on the cross at Passover: April. For the previous six months Jesus had been keeping a low profile. After Jesus fed 5000, the people wanted to make him king by force (John 6:15). He gives a big sermon in Capernaum (“Bread of Life Discourse”), but then heads out into more non-Jewish areas to keep a low profile. He goes up to Tyre/Sidon and casts out a demon out of a Syrophoenician woman's daughter. Mark says Jesus “did not want anyone to know he was there” (Mark 7:24).When he goes to the region of the Decapolis (Greek area), he sees a deaf man and heals him privately, then tells him to tell no one (Mark 7:36).Jesus goes back to Bethsaida but heals a blind man outside the village, then tells him not to enter back into the village (Mark 8:22).Peter confesses Jesus as Messiah as Caesarea-Philippi, but Jesus strictly charged them to tell no one (Mark 8:30).After that Jesus is transfigured and he tells Peter, James and John to tell no one about this until he's raised from the dead (Mark 9:9).Jesus goes through Galilee and Mark says, “He did not want anyone to know, for he was teaching his disciples” (Mark 9:30).So then Jesus comes to the Feast of Booths and everybody is sort of surprised to see him. Not only does he go to the feast, but he begins teaching in the temple area and the people say, “Is not this the man whom they seek to kill? And here he is, speaking openly and they say nothing to him!” (John 7:26).The spotlight is on him once again, and Jesus goes for it. He doesn't back down. He walks to the center of the stage and makes some really big claims. So the occasion is the Feast of Booths––of Sukkot.Feast of Booths: John 7:2.They had a water ceremony, which Jason talked about a couple weeks ago. They'd bring water up from the Pool of Siloam near the COD and pour it out in a flask in the Temple area.Another thing to remember is Sukkot is in October. No rain for 6 months prior.“Plan an outdoor wedding anytime between April 15–Sept 30 and you don't have to pray that it won't rain at your wedding.” (At least not water, sometimes it rains rockets in the summer––like right now).During Sukkot though, it almost always rains. Pretty much every year it rained right at Sukkot. So in that context Jesus says: “Come to me and drink, and out of your heart will flow rivers of living water” (John 7:38).Like going to the Mall of America at Christmas time. There's Santa Clauses, trees, decorations, Christmas music, and someone stands up and says, “I am the ultimate gift-giver. Everything you have has been given to you from me. I'm Santa Clause.”Jason talked last week about John 7:53–8:11 is not part of the Scriptures. It's not in the earliest manuscriptsIt has unique words found nowhere else in JohnIt has a unique styleIt's not quoted in early patristic writings up to the fourth century ADAnd it appears in 5 different places in manuscript tradition, meaning it was a “floating narrative” not originally part of the book.So with that in mind, the narrative flows from John 7:52 to 8:12. We're still in the festival of booths and Jesus speaks out in the temple area and says, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”Let's focus on Jesus's statement here for a few minutes.Jesus's Claim: the light of the worldThis is the second “I am…” statement. There are seven in John:I am the bread of life (John 6:35)I am the light of the world (John 8:12)I am the gate (John 10:7)I am the good shepherd (John 10:11)I am the resurrection and the life (John 11:25)I am the way the truth and the life (John 14:6)I am the true vine (John 15:1)These statements explain the character and nature of Jesus. He says it again in 9:5. So chapter 9 seems to me to be connected to chapter 8.Let's look at the significance of Jesus's claim to be the light of the world. In the OT, God is the true “light”:Slide. Ps 27:1 “The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?”Slide. Isa 60:19–22 speaks of a time at the end of the age when the sun is no longer needed because God himself is the light: “The sun shall be no more your light by day, nor for brightness shall the moon give you light; but the Lord will be your everlasting light, and your God will be your glory…the Lord will be your everlasting light.”This is picked up in Rev 21:22–23 “And I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb. And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb.”Why is God often depicted as light? Because HE is the true source of illumination.Slide. His word is also a lamp and light unto our path (Ps 119:105), but that's because it points to the TRUE light––God himself.Slide. Interestingly, in Isaiah the servant––or Messiah––is also depicted as light.Isa 9:2, 6 “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them a light has shined…[and what is this light's name?] Wonderful counselor, mighty God, everlasting father, prince of peace.”Isa 49:6 (servant is a light for the nations)Luke 1:76 Zechariah talks about the light, sunrise, star…that has visited his people from heaven. So the Old Testament says that God is the true light, and his messiah is a light to the nations. When you think about this statement a bit more, you might be tempted to think that Jesus's claim isn't all that significant. Slide. In Matt 5:14 Jesus says to his disciples: “You are the light of the world.”So is Jesus saying anything significant here about himself? To answer the question, let's look at Jesus's statement in light of three contexts: the immediate discussion, the festival in general, and the book as a whole.Context of the DiscussionFirst, notice that Jesus points to himself as the source of light.Listen to Jesus's words again in John 8:12: “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”Jesus points to himself. We can't do that. We point people to God.I think if any one of us were to do that, we'd be blaspheming. The Pharisees believed Jesus was making an “over the top” claim.Jesus's statement strikes a chord with the Pharisees. They say: “You are bearing witness about yourself, your testimony is not true” (John 8:13).“Anybody can say anything they want, but let's see some proof. Who are your references? We want to fact-check.”In 2002 Stephen Spielberg put out a movie called Catch Me if You Can. The movie is based on the real life story of Frank Abagnale, who posed as a commercial airways pilot, a doctor, and a prosecutor. He made all these great claims about who he was, but when the FBI looked into him, they realized he was a total fraud. He had no references––just a big mouth, a lot of confidence, and a lot of nerve. The Pharisees use Jesus's own words against him. In John 5:31 Jesus says, “If I alone bear witness about myself, my testimony is not deemed true.”That goes back to OT law, which said you had to have several witnesses to substantiate somebody's claim (Deut 17:6). Usually that applied to a crime (Deut 19:15), but by NT times it applied to other legal situations. And Jesus doesn't back down.He says, “Yeah, I can give you a reference. How about…God himself?”John 8:18 “I am the one who bears witness about myself, and the Father who sent me bears witness about me.”What does Jesus mean that God the Father bears witness about him?He probably means that “God the Father has borne witness to me the Messiah through the OT scriptures.”And if we wanted to flesh that out, we'd go look at what the OT has to say about the Messiah. But the discussion doesn't go in that direction.Instead of asking Jesus what God the Father has to say about him, they ask, “Where is your father?” (8:19).And Jesus says, “You don't know God the father. If you knew me, you'd know the Father” (8:19).In other words, knowing Jesus means knowing God the Father. In John 14:9 Jesus put it this way, “Whoever has seen me has seen the [otherwise invisible] Father.”Knowing Jesus means knowing God the Father because Jesus is God. So, the Pharisees believed he was making an “over the top claim” in saying he is the light of the world, and in the discussion, Jesus doesn't back down. But then he even goes further than that.As the narrative continues, Jesus claims to be able to do things that only God can do.Jesus claims to be a co-judge with God (John 8:16)Jesus claims to have come down to earth from God's presence and therefore is not from this world (John 8:23, 42)Jesus claims to forgive people of sins (John 8:36)Jesus claims that God glorifies him (John 8:54); shouldn't it be the other way around?Jesus claims to be the “I am” of Isa 44:11, 25––who in that context is God (John 8:58)SummarySo, as the discussion continues, Jesus doesn't back down. He advances the Jews' suspicion about who he was claiming to be. He is the source of light, not just a reflection.Context of the FestivalWhen his statement is also heard within the context of the festival they were celebrating, his words take on even more significance.First, let's look at where Jesus makes this statement. John 8:20 says he made the statement in the treasury of the temple.Part of the Court of the Women where the Mishnah says there were thirteen trumpet shaped containers to collect offerings. This was where he was when he saw the widow put her two mites into one container (Mark 12:41–44).The reason this location is significant is because at the Feast of Booths they also lit four massive lamps in a pretty pompous ceremony. The Mishnah says that during the Sukkot Festival, there were in the court of the women in Jerusalem golden candlesticks with golden bowls on top of them. The younger priests would take oil and light them in a ceremony. The Talmud indicates the candlesticks were 50 cubits high––that's 75 feet tall; half the full height of the temple. Picture. The Mishnah says that, “There was not a courtyard in Jerusalem that did not reflect the light of the house of water-drawing [reference to the water ceremony]” (Sukkah 5.3).And then they had this ceremony. Let me read a little more from the Mishnah:“Men of piety and good works used to dance before them with burning torches in their hands, singing songs and praises. And countless Levites played on harps, lyres, cymbals and trumpets and instruments of music on the fifteen steps leading down from the Court of the Israelites to the court of the women, corresponding to the Fifteen Songs of Ascents in the Psalms; upon them the Levites used to stand with instruments of music and make melody.”“They went on until they reached the gate that leads out to the east, they turned their faces to the west and said, ‘Our fathers when they were in this place turned with their backs toward the Temple of the Lord and their faces toward the east, and they worshipped the sun toward the east; but as for us, our eyes are turned toward the Lord.”“They used to repeat the words, ‘We are the Lord's, and our eyes are turned to the Lord.'” (Sukkah 5.4).So the people had this big ceremony at Sukkot in which they faced east where the high places of the past were and remembered the idolatry of the Israelites. 1 Kgs 11:7 “Then Solomon built a high place for Chemosh the abomination of Moab, and for Molech the abomination of the Ammonites, on the mountain east of Jerusalem.”Then they turn around, have this light ceremony, there's dancing and singing, light is shining all throughout Jerusalem, the Jews say, “Our eyes are turned to the Lord…”And it's with this background that Jesus stands up and says, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” (John 8:12).Remember Jesus went up to the festival in the middle of the feast (John 7:14).So it's probably not right after they lit the lamps, but all this was still fresh in their mind. He says it in the temple area. Now that's a bold statement in this context. The Jews are saying, “We don't want to be idolaters anymore, we want to worship God only,” and Jesus waves his hands, points to himself and says, “I am the light…not of the neighborhood, village, city, Jews…but of the WORLD.”He doesn't say I'll point you to the true light. Doesn't say I know who the true light is.He says I am the light of the world. So while the Jews are very careful about who they are pledging allegiance to, Jesus steps up into the temple area under the massive lamps that are burning, and says, “Look to me. I am the light.”Context of the BookJohn starts out his book with Jesus the light, and there, Jesus is God:John 1:3–4 “All things were made through him [the word], and without him was not anything made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men.John 1:9–10 “The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made through him.”So in John, the true light that has come into the world is Jesus––who was with God before the world began, and who created all things.Putting all those contexts together, we see that Jesus is claiming to be the source of light. Just as God is light, Jesus is light. He's not just a good Galilean rabbi, he is God himself––the true light.ApplicationIt might seem obvious to us Christians that God is the true light or illumination in this world, but this is not the case outside of the Christian worldview.Western society is very much influenced by rationalism:This worldview was heavily developed in the Enlightenment period, where “coming to the light” meant using your reason and rational faculties (rather than emotion or tradition) to truly know about the world, one's self, and everything else in the cosmos.By thinking logically and using the scientific method, one truly comes “to know.”Rational thinking pulls you out of the darkness and brings you into the light. You can think of a philosopher like Rene Descartes who pushed the idea of rationalism for knowing truth. He wrote several books on how to think clearly and soundly in order to arrive at truth, or “enlightenment.”So according to a rationalistic worldview, your mind––which is logic or correct thinking––is the light of the world that guides you.Our culture today is also very much influenced by emotionalism (today even maybe more than rationalism):David Hume, another philosopher, emphasized feelings, emotions, and sentiments. He said that moral judgments themselves ultimately rest on ‘some internal sense or feeling which nature has made universal in the whole species.'So reason is second to the role of moral feelings or sentiments. You don't have to think very hard to see how much this worldview has impacted our society today.I can identify however I feel like identifying––who are you to tell me I'm wrong? If I feel like behaving in a certain way, who are you to tell me I'm wrong? So in an emotionalistic worldview your feelings are the light of the world that guide you. Jesus blows both of those out of the water. His claim is that HE is the guiding light of the world. Many of Jesus's claims and works defy rationalism.Rationalism doesn't leave a lot of room for a God-man.Rationalism doesn't leave a lot of room for a dead man to come back to life.He also destroys emotionalism.Jesus says in Matt 16:24 “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.”I don't like that. My emotions say, “Put me first, then I'll be happy!”Living with my girlfriend before I'm married might “feel” like the right thing to do, but that's not what Jesus advocates. We can ask the question: what is your beacon of light in your life? What is the source of truth in your life?Is it your mental capabilities?Your emotions?Or do you recognize that this God-man, Jesus, is the ultimate source of truth? But Jesus doesn't stop with an “ontological” statement about himself. He places a demand on people: John 8:12b“Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”Jesus's Demand: Follow HimExample: Imagine waking up in the middle of the night on a small ship and everybody who was on the ship with you is mysteriously gone. You look around and all you see is water. It just so happens, though, that you have some sailing experience, so you would know how to use a nautical chart if you had one. So you work your way up to the wheelhouse, open up the cabinet, and all the nautical charts for that part of the ocean are actually there. And it also happens to be a perfectly clear night. You can see the north star shining clearly in the sky, so you could line up the charts perfectly to know which direction to sail. Imagine how stupid it would be if you just pulled the shades down in the wheelhouse, threw the maps away, and said, “I'm just doing to do my own thing. I think I'll sail this way.”The map and the star would do you no good. You have to act on it for it to help you. Your knowledge would be useless if it wasn't applied. That's what Jesus demands of us here. Whoever follows me doesn't walk in darkness. There's an active part of it.And when Jesus says you'll have the “light of life,” he means you'll have the “light that produces life.” In other words if you follow Jesus, you'll have eternal life.So what's the question? What does it mean to follow Jesus? It doesn't mean works get you into heaven. Two chapters earlier Jesus says in the Bread of Life sermon:John 6:29 “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent”.John 12:46 “I have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness.”On the other hand, truly believing in him will change your life.Jesus says in John 15:8 that the father is glorified when we bear much fruit and in so doing we prove to be his disciples. So following Jesus means believing, but true belief will alter the course of your life. It's not just knowing the north star exists, it's actually following it.I met a guy in Israel a few years ago called Tony Simon. My wife had known him for years, but this was the first time I met him. Well in that first conversation he was telling me about a person he met and how he was evangelizing to him, then later the person said, “Hey, it's OK, you don't have to evangelize to me, I'm a Christian.” And Tony said, “What? Well why didn't you try to share the gospel with me?” And the guy said, “Well do I have to share with everyone?”That story always stuck with me because this was the only time I met him.Tragically killed in Iraq a couple years later smuggling Bibles into Iraq.So the one time I met him he was telling me about Jesus. The only thing, really, that I know about him, is that he was a follower of Jesus.Would people say that about you? Even if they only met you one time? What's the one thing they would associate with you?For some in this room following Jesus might mean:Breaking up with a boyfriend or girlfriend who is not pointing you to Jesus.Investing a little less in your work, and a little more in the things of heaven.Putting away the alcohol or repenting of a particular sin.Spending more time in prayer. It might mean a major life change, or a small change.TobyMac has a song that says “I want to be rich in love, rolling deep, loaded in friends and family.”I'll add to that and say, let's be rich in following Jesus.Let's be rich in following the one who said, “Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
If "The Joshua Tree" was the album that propelled Irish band U2 to the stratosphere of rock success, Achtung Baby was the album that would cement them in that status permanently. The band was coming off mixed success with their hybrid live/studio album "Rattle and Hum," and were struggling directionally. The band felt that they were not prepared for the success they had received, or as drummer Larry Mullin, Jr. put it, "we were the biggest, but we weren't the best.”Achtung Baby draws its inspiration from German reunification, much like the Joshua Tree and Rattle and Hum drew inspiration from America. U2 began recording in Berlin at Hansa Studios. They arrived just before German reunification. Rather than being inspired by reunification, the band found places gloomy and neglected. Morale continued to falter as they struggled with the direction of the album, and actually considered breaking up. With the encouragement of producer Brian Eno, the band continued on, and recommitted themselves to the group after returning to Dublin during Christmas. Recording was relocated to Dublin in February of 1991.Musically, the album has a more Eurocentric feel. Bono and the Edge were gravitating to electronica and new sounds while Clayton and Mullin, Jr. preferred sounds more reminiscent of classic rock. The synthesis created a sound that was less "over the top" than previous U2 works, and really opened up the commercial success of the group. While the sound might be less "over the top," the forthcoming tour called "Zoo TV" was the epitome of "over the top." By this time, U2 was performing not in concert halls, but in stadiums. This is an album that will definitely get your attention. Even Better Than the Real ThingThis second track on the album was the fourth single released. The song originated from a guitar riff created during the "Rattle and Hum" sessions. The song is about the instant gratification of commercialism and its effects on society. There's a more "techno" sound in this song, with the guitar delays and the double octaves throughout.Mysterious WaysWhat a great hook at the start of this song! Jesus Jones was an influence on the group at the time, and you can feel it on this track. The song itself is an idealization of women, and the trap of separating them into angels and devils. The video was shot in Morocco and used a belly dancer to portray that "she moves in mysterious ways."OneThis is the song that brought the group back together when they were struggling in their recording sessions in Berlin. The song itself is vaguely about relationships and may have been influenced by the dissolution of the Edge's marriage to Aislinn O'Sullivan. Until the End of the WorldThis deeper cut from the album is set in a Biblical setting with Bono singing as Judas in a conversation with Jesus. "We ate the food, we drank the wine. Everybody having a good time except you. You were talking about the end of the world." It was never released as a single. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme from the motion picture “The Addams Family”The movie based on the 60's television series was released in November. STAFF PICKS:“Everything About You” by Ugly Kid JoeWayne kicks off the staff picks with a song off the EP Ugly As They Wanna Be. The song describes everything the singer hates. The name of the group is a spoof on the name of the group "Pretty Boy Floyd," and they have been described as the last glam metal band. “Lies” by EMFRob takes us into the British alternative rock scene. This is off EMF's debut album Schubert Dip. EMF takes its name from a fan club of the band New Order called "Epsom Mad Funkers." The album made it to number 3 on the UK charts, though it didn't do as well in the United States. “The Sky is Crying” by Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double TroubleBruce's Brings us a song posthumously released after Vaughan's helicopter crash in 1990. It was originally recorded by Elmore James in 1959, and was performed by The AllmanBrothers Band at Duane Allman's funeral in 1971. Jimmie Vaughan compiled the songs on this album, also called "The Sky is Crying," and all but one song had not been released previously.“Something to Talk About” by Bonnie RaittBrian's pick is Bonnie Raitt's breakout single. Originally written by Shirley Eikhard, the song is about friends in a small town where everyone knows everyone else's business. If everyone is assuming we're a couple, maybe we should give them something to talk about! INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:“Where's My Thing” by RushThis instrumental from Roll the Bones came after several songs started as instrumentals but became perfect for a particular lyric. Finally, drummer and lyricist told the band “You keep promising to do this instrumental, and I'm not giving you any more lyrics until you write this thing.”

I can tell what you're thinking: really, What the Riff? The Go-Go's? That's not rock, that's pop! Well we'll agree that their debut album Beauty and the Beat was quite popular, but the group has its roots in the punk movement, not pop music. With Belinda Carlisle on lead vocals, Charlotte Caffey on lead guitar and keyboards, Gina Schock on percussion, Kathy Valentine on bass, and Jane Wiedlin on rhythm guitar, The Go-Go's were the first and (so far) only all female band to hit the top of the charts writing their OWN songs and playing their OWN instruments.Their inspiration comes from punk stalwarts like Iggy Pop and The Sex Pistols, and the band was formed before the members actually knew how to play their instruments. They established a reputation in the L.A. punk scene and were eventually signed by I.R.S. Records. Beauty and the Beat combines Punk sensibilities with the upcoming New Wave sound of the early 80's, and the result was both critically and popularly well received. The Go-Go's would be nominated for the Best New Artist Grammy in 1982, and Beauty and the Beat would spend 6 weeks atop the Billboard 200 chart. So it is OK to rock out to The Go-Go's. But don't worry if you're embarrassed. We won't tell. Our lips are sealed! We Got the BeatThis is the song that started it all for The Go-Go's. Penned by guitarist and keyboardist Charlotte Caffey, it gained popularity as a demo in the UK in 1980. They were invited to tour with the group Madness at that time, and it's distinctive percussion beat is iconic. Our Lips Are Sealed“Pay no mind to what they say. It doesn't matter anyway.” This was the first track on the album and the lead U.S. single. It's pop orientation is also atypical for the group, and The Go-Go's were unenthusiastic about doing the video. The perky, fresh image was very different from their roots. Can't Stop the WorldThis deeper cut sounds a little more new wave than the hits off the album. Kathy Valentine's bass licks are prominent on this track. The lyrics are good advice for today. “Things will be alright. Can't stop the world.”AutomaticThis minor key track has a mysterious vibe to it. This song is played in the background on a documentary on The Go-Go's discussing the darker side of the group. There are some cool pauses in the middle of this track. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:The William Tell Overture (Main Theme from "The Legend of the Lone Ranger")One of the biggest box office failures hit the cinemas this month, and both the star and director of the movie would not respectively act and direct again. STAFF PICKS:Swords & Tequilla by RiotWayne's staff pick cranks out the rock. Heavy Metal band Riot is out of New York City, and unfortunately didn't catch the fame that later hair bands would gain. This is from their album Fire Down Under. The lead singer was killed in Atlanta when shot during an attempted carjacking. Ain't Even Done with the Night by John CougarBrian brings us an early hit from the album “Nothin' Matters, and What If It Did” by John Cougar. Cougar - soon to revert back to John Mellencamp - was an observational writer, and so his songs are not autobiographical. “It's time to go home, and I ain't even done with the night.”Find Your Way Back by Jefferson StarshipBruce's staff pick is off Modern Times, the sixth album by Jefferson Starship, and the second with Mickey Thomas on lead vocals. This song is about regret at leaving a relationship. The chorus comes back to the theme, “find your way back to her heart.”Somebody's Knockin' by Terri GibbsRob finishes us off with a crossover country song from from talented and blind Georgia native Terri Gibbs. This song hit number 13 on the pop charts. “Lord it's the devil, would you look at him? I've heard about him, but I never dreamed he'd have blue eyes and blue jeans.” INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Primera Invasion by SantanaThis instrumental track showcases the talents of Carlos Santana, who had an album on the charts at the time.
In last week's post, we started to look at the essential why of church, and came to the conclusion that the key purpose of a local congregation lies beyond itself—in the cosmic, heavenly, spiritual congregation that Jesus Christ is building. This is the primary reality of church in the New Testament, and the local, immediate purposes that we pursue in our churches lives stem from this larger, heavenly reality. But how exactly? How does the big, primary reality of the heavenly church provide an essential why (and how) for our church life now? With the possible exception of Colossians, no epistle answers this question more profoundly than Ephesians. And so as good apprentices to Scripture, in this post we're going to learn from the Apostle how the big why of Jesus' heavenly church connects with the everyday why and how of earthly church life. [A quick note: So as not to get bogged down too much along the way in the wonderful but intricate details of Ephesians, I've provided some endnotes for those who want to chase up some of the intricacies; they are referred to along the way like this (#1).]In heaven and on earthYou can tell how massive and mind-blowing the opening chapter of Ephesians is, because half way through Paul pauses to pray for his readers' comprehension—that God would open the eyes of their hearts to grasp how extraordinary it all is (and he prays much the same again in 3:16-19). According to Ephesians 1, God's plan is to shower spiritual blessings in the heavenly places upon the adopted, blood-bought people that he has chosen from all eternity to be the inheritance of his Son.(#1) The risen Jesus Christ is the One in whom everything is brought together, “the things in heaven and the things on earth” (1:10). This introduces one of the major ideas of the letter: that the work of God in Christ creates a new reality that spans heaven and earth. Through hearing the gospel and responding to it in faith, all God's people (both Jews and Gentiles) are united in the risen Lord Jesus Christ, who sits now in the heavenly places far above all rule and authority (1:20-21). We are all now there, spiritually speaking, blessed in the heavenly places ‘in him'—or as 2:5-6 puts it, as Jews and Gentiles, we have all now together been made alive and raised up and seated in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus.(#2) This is the body of Christ, his heavenly gathering or church, the fullness of him who fills all in all. This cosmic, heavenly reality keeps re-emerging throughout the letter, described in various ways—for example, it's the holy temple in the Lord in which both Jews and Gentiles are being built together (2:19-22); and it's the heavenly assembly that Gentiles are now also members of through Christ—thus revealing God's extraordinary wisdom to the powers that be in the heavenly places (3:1-12; #3).However, very importantly, this heavenly gathering has an earthly existence too. It's ‘the whole family in heaven and on earth' (3:15; #4). In fact, the agenda of what we do here and now on earth is determined by our membership of that heavenly church and family. This comes out in multiple ways throughout the letter, especially as Paul urges his readers in the second half of the letter to ‘walk' in a manner worthy of their calling. In light of the heavenly reality, we are called to act in a certain way now; to think cosmic, and act local. The various aspects of this worthy local walk provide us with the agenda that should direct our everyday lives and our local earthly churches. Let me tease out three of these essentials that are prominent in Ephesians, with one eye on our current unusual covid circumstances (and also leave one as a cliffhanger for next time). 1. Building the body through apostolic ministryThe first essential item is to build the heavenly church by taking part in ‘apostolic ministry'. ‘Apostolic ministry' is my catchy summary (!) of the earthly work that builds and grows the heavenly church. It's the divine work that Paul himself has been commissioned to participate in as a go-between (or minister) of the gospel.(#5) Like the rest of the apostles, he has been entrusted by God with the gospel of Jesus and sent off like a courier to deliver it everywhere, to see it take root and grow, so that all who believe its promises might be included in the body of Christ (3:6).But the apostolic ministry doesn't stop with the apostles. By Christ's gracious gift, it spreads out to a much larger web of gospel activists—starting with the apostles and prophets and evangelists, and cascading out through pastor-teachers and ‘the saints', and to every single member of the body, all of whom speak the truth of Christ in love to grow and build the body (that's a quick summary of 4:8-16; #6). What Paul himself is doing as a courier of the word of Christ, he wants the Ephesians to be doing with each other in all sorts of ways (whether in daily conversation in 4:29, or in singing to one another in 5:19, or in fathers teaching their children in 6:4). As we find ourselves rethinking our local church ministries post-covid, this agenda item must be at the very top. Our purpose is to build and grow the heavenly body of Christ by seeing its earthly members gathered in through evangelism and conversion, and then grown through the same apostolic ministry of the word—a word that is preached and spoken and shared in a multitude of ways by all the members of the body. For ministry leaders, this can be expressed in a simple (and essential) question: how can I create, foster, equip and organize as many effective contexts and opportunities as possible in which the word of truth is being spoken by the members of the body for the building of the body? 2. Growing and fortifying members in a threatening worldThis building purpose takes place in the context of an ongoing triple threat, traditionally summarized as the world, the flesh and the devil. These were the forces that rendered us spiritually dead in 2:1-3, and they remain as oppositional forces in our earthly lives. In chapters 4-6, Paul speaks of putting off the old corrupt desires and practices of our former lives, and leading a new life of love (4:17-5:2); he speaks of the deceptive, malignant influence of the ‘sons of disobedience', the darkened, foolish, worldly culture in which we walk every day (5:3-18); and he urges us to be strong and well-armed for our fight against the spiritual schemes and attacks of the devil (6:10-20). The earthly reality in which we live as members of the heavenly church is full of spiritual warfare. This too generates a key purpose for all our earthly action: to resist, persevere and stand strong in the face of the various earthly threats and powers we face, and to express more and more in our lives the character of the ‘new humanity' that has been created in Christ.(#7)This, too, is what the ‘building' work of church life is aiming at—to grow and fortify the members of Christ's body as they face spiritual threat. This is partly why the past few months of isolation have been so unsettling, and so potentially dangerous. We rightly worry about the spiritual effects of people being deprived of many of the usual avenues for fortifying apostolic ministry. We have all done our best to pull together online opportunities to address that need, but as things start to thaw out, we will need to face the reality that months away from the usual strengthening effect of fellowship will have taken its toll. Some may be slow to return, or not return at all. Others may have found themselves caught up in sinful, selfish attitudes or behaviours that they hadn't struggled with before (or for some time). As we think about our priorities in re-establishing the normal means of apostolic ministry, this should drive a sense of sober urgency—not only for doing so as soon as reasonably possible, but about the spiritual difficulties we may need to address as we do so. 3. Constancy and boldness in prayerThe other striking implication of the heavenly church is that by being members of it we have a bold and confident access to our heavenly Father, which leads to prayer (3:12-14; cf. 2:8). Paul twice reveals the nature of his prayers for the Ephesians (in 1:15f and 3:14f), and on both occasions he is pleading for God to open the hearts and minds of his readers to grasp and respond to the unfathomable riches of the gospel. He likewise urges the Ephesians themselves to be constant, alert and persevering in prayer and supplication (6:18-19), including for the success of the apostolic ministry. To be a go-between for the word of Christ, and to bow our knees before the Father to ask him to give comprehension, faith, love and hope to those who hear—this two-fold strategy is as simple a summary of apostolic ministry as could be found (cf. Acts 6:1-4). I wonder if we could draw a circle around the strategic approach of our churches and summarize them so powerfully? This too is a challenge for us as we retool, reboot, relaunch, restart, and all the other re-'s that are facing us at present. Are the basic purposes of our ministries reflected in the various strategies, approaches and actions that we are taking? If not, it is an ideal to time rethink. But what about church… Of course the really significant thing that we are waiting for Paul to address in Ephesians (or failing that, for me to address in this post) is the prime importance of the members of the heavenly assembly actually physically gathering together in local earthly churches. Surely the heavenly church has something to say to us about that?! It's a tricky question, with a somewhat surprising answer. And given how long this post already is, it's one that will have to wait till next week. PS. Many ongoing thanks for the encouraging and thoughtful interaction on recent posts (via comments and direct via email). Keep it coming! For those who are wondering, I am planning to open up the ‘paying partners' option for subscribers in two weeks time on Tuesday 14 July. From that date onwards, you'll be able to chip in something each month to support my writing ministry (both here at The Payneful Truth and further afield in the other books and resources I'm currently developing). I'll explain the process and all the details next week. NotesApologies, but one of the few limitations of this newsletter format is that I can't do footnotes properly:(#1) Most translations obscure this, but the ‘inheritance' (or ‘heritage') of 1:11 and 18 is the inheritance that belongs to God in his Son, not the inheritance that his people will receive (which is referred to in 1:14). His saints (that is, the ‘us' of 1:11-12, the Jewish believers like Paul), along with those Gentiles who heard the gospel through Paul (the ‘you' of 1:13-14), are the people that God has chosen to be his glorious inheritance (cf. Deut 32:8-9; Ps 33:12). (#2) I've always been curious about the three sun-'s of Eph 2:5-6—made alive together, raised up together, seated together. We normally translate this ‘together with Christ', but in context I strongly suspect that it refers to the ‘you and us' of 1:11-14 and 2:1-4—to the Jews and the Gentiles who are united in sin, and in being made alive, raised and seated in Christ. Paul goes on to explain at more length in the rest of chapter 2 how Christ in his death unites ‘you Gentiles in the flesh' with Israel ‘in one body' (2:16), creating ‘one new man/humanity' instead of the two. This of course is another major theme of Ephesians—the ‘new humanity' of Jews and Gentiles that has been created in Christ. It is often flagged in the language of ‘the saints' (i.e. God's holy people, the Jews, who now believe in Christ). We are all now ‘saints' in Christ, but when ‘the saints' are mentioned in Ephesians, it refers in every case to the Jewish Christians, who were the first to believe in Christ, and through whom the gospel of Christ was taken to the Gentiles. In fact, it's my own quirky opinion that the opening address of Ephesians (‘to the saints who are in Ephesus and the faithful in Christ Jesus') flags this theme at the outset—it's written to ‘the saints' (Jewish Christians) and to those Gentiles who are now also believers in Jesus Christ. See Eph 1:1, 15, 18; 2:19; 3:8, 18; 4:12; 6:18. (#3) Eph 3:10 is often used these days to say that the churches (that is, earthly churches) are a demonstration of God's wisdom; that churches function almost as an apologetic for the gospel, displaying before the world the glory of God's salvation. Whether that is true or not (and I am doubtful that churches per se are ever given this function in the NT), it's not what Eph 3:10 is saying. The manifesting of God's wisdom occurs in the heavenly places, to the rulers and authorities, not to onlookers in the world. Given this, and the flow of thought from chapter 1 through to chapter 3, I think it's likely that Paul is referring to the heavenly church in 3:10, not earthly congregations.(#4) The strange phrase in 3:15 has always puzzled me: ‘from whom every (or all or the whole) fatherhood (or family) in heaven and upon earth is named'. I think the best option in context is that Paul is referring to the whole shebang (that's a technical theology term; don't let it worry you)—to the new household that God has created for himself (2:19), made up of both Jews and Gentiles, now bearing the one family name, gathered in heaven and here on earth as well. (#5) We're used to translating diakonos as ‘servant', but as the most recent version of the standard Greek dictionary (BDAG) now acknowledges, the word ‘minister' more fundamentally means ‘intermediary' or ‘go-between': ‘1. one who serves as an intermediary in a transaction, agent, intermediary, courier; 2. one who gets something done, at the behest of a superior, assistant to someone'. (#6) The passage in chapter 4:8-13, which is often taken as a description of what happens in a local congregation where the pastor-teachers equip the saints for the work of ministry, I think actually describes the historical sequence by which the Christ gifted and launched the apostolic ministry, beginning at Pentecost and among ‘the saints', and unfolding from there. Lionel Windsor has argued for this position persuasively; see Lionel J. Windsor, ‘The Work of Ministry in Ephesians 4:12', in ‘Tend My Sheep': The Word of God and Pastoral Ministry (ed. Keith G. Condie; London: Latimer Publications, 2016).(#7) The ‘new man' in 4:24 that is ‘created after the likeness of God' is a reference back to the ‘new man' that was created in Christ on the cross in 2:15. Paul is urging them to embrace or clothe themselves in the new redeemed identity that they have now in Christ—a whole new humanity of both Jew and Gentile, brought near to God together, with a new mind and a new way of living (which is spelled out in 4:25f.). I also suspect that the reference to the ‘body of Christ' and the ‘full-grown man' in 4:12-13 is pointing to the same reality. This is a public episode. In this episode, we talk with Renee and James B Notkin who are co-Pastors of Union Church in Seattle. Union Church is a church plant located in the South Lake Union Neighborhood in Seattle. In planting Union Church, the Notkins were looking to develop a missional church model that would provide weekly opportunities for three basic discipleship commitments:· Remain in me· Love one another· Go into the worldThis led them to a pattern of life together in which the format for their Sunday gathering followed a regular four week rotation of worship, small groups, and service. In living into this vision, what Renee and James B didn't expect was that the neighborhood would experience cataclysmic transformation. A decade ago, South Lake Union was an underdeveloped semi industrial stretch of land nestled between the Seattle Center and Lake Union. And then Amazon decided to locate their headquarters there. Seemingly overnight, their church was a few blocks away from the busiest intersection in Seattle. In this conversation, we discuss how Renee and James B look for opportunities to find points of connection with their new neighbors, to care for those who might be overlooked in a time of economic growth, and to continue to provide vital programs for the congregation.Access more Show Notes with pictures and resources related to this episode.More information about this podcast and helpful church and urbanism resources can be found on The Embedded Church website.Related ResourcesUnion Church SeattleMissional Church: A Vision for the Sending of the Church in North America by Daryl GruderFind these Key Terms on The Embedded Church website:- Missional Theology- Third PlaceShow CreditsHosted and Produced by Eric O. Christmastime is a wonderful and crazy time for our family. Last year we made some large strides to focus on our favorite traditions, and simplifying as much as we could. We still have a long way to go, and are so happy to be learning today from the life of my friend about how to keep the true meaning of Christmas alive in our homes. She is a great example of love, service and becoming more like Jesus Christ.Meet Andrea Wilkinson. My friend, Andrea, is a stay at home mother. She has one son they adopted as a baby who is now grown and serving a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints in Las Vegas. Andrea is from upstate New York originally, has lived all over the country, and currently lives in Texas.Listen through the link below, or through your favorite podcast app. Please, take a minute to rate, review and subscribe to the podcast- I would appreciate it so much! That is how our podcast becomes more searchable on podcast apps.Shownotes:A few years ago, Andrea and her family decided they needed to simplify their Christmases. They picked a few of their favorite traditions and let the others go by the wayside. Here are some of their favorites:1. Watching Christmas MoviesNational Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, Christmas with the Kranks, and Elf are a few of their favorites. For more about our family’s Christmas Movie Marathon Tradition, click here!2. BBQ Take Out for Christmas EveThis was born out of desperation when she was making multiple trips to the airport to pick up family one Christmas Eve, and it ended up being such a relief, it stuck. Dinner was ready with out hours of prep and clean up is a snap.Other Christmas Eve Traditions include reading, The Other Wiseman ,by Henry VanDyke, leaving out cookies for Santa and carrots for the reindeer, wearing matching pj’s and just sitting by the tree with nothing but the Christmas lights shining, listening to Christmas music.3. ServiceAndrea loves the book Christmas Jars, by Jason F. Wright. She and her family like to pattern their giving after this book: saving all year and then giving something big for the holidays. One of their favorite traditions is to do “Ding Dong Ditch Christmas” where they leave anonymous gifts on doorsteps of those truly wanting over the holidays and watch in the bushes to see their reaction when they open the door. Through out the fall they listen to hear of families that are struggling, or sometimes reach out to a community organization for ideas of who they can help. They write sweet and encouraging messages on the gift boxes to ensure the family feels loved and feels the magic of Christmas. They also donate gift cards to their local church for families in need, and love doing the 12 days of Christmas.4. Light the WorldThis is another service opportunity that is put on by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints. The church has these really neat Giving Vending Machines (see video below) in 10 different locations around the world where you can buy simple things like a chicken or a backpack for a family in need, all the way up to items that cost a couple hundred dollars. Light the World also has amazing videos you can watch with your family about serving people around them in small and simple ways, videos on the life of Jesus Christ, and a service calendar to offer more ideas on how to how love. You can also sign up to receive daily texts with service prompts through the month of December.5. Elf on the ShelfAndrea also has a great Elf on the Shelf mom fail story she tells us. It’s great. Our 3 Helpful and Happy Questions Answered by Andrea:Q. What is your favorite food?A. All food! But especially Hillary’s Pumpkin Cheesecake (we loved this answer!!)Q. What is your dream vacation?A. Visiting London, and I’m going in a few weeks!! (I’m so jealous and happy for her!!)Q. Do you have a homemaking hack for us?A. Probably all of us have had what we would call Mountaintop Experiences in our lives. Yet, these experiences don't always mean much to us in the long run. This sermon was delivered on a church festival called the Transfiguration. It highlights a great mountaintop experience of for Jesus' disciples. On the top of a mountain, they see Jesus unveiled as the divine Son of God. Yet, what difference should this great experience make for us? So what if they had a mountaintop experience? This sermon delves into what this experience shows us: that we should learn to Jesus in the everyday experiences of life, and that we should let our own mountaintop experiences with God transform us into people who provide those experiences for others.Scripture Reference: Luke 9:28-43; Exodus 34:29-35; 2 Corinthians 3:12-4:2Preached on the Feast of Transfiguration, March 3, 2019 by Rev. Racism in Our Nation and LGBT Rights Around the WorldThis week on State of Belief, Interfaith Alliance’s weekly radio show and podcast, host Rev. Welton Gaddy reflects on the mass shooting earlier this month in Charleston, South Carolina. He’ll speak with Anthea Butler, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania, for analysis of the language being used to report on the tragedy. We’ll also hear from th Rev. Ed Kosak and Cookie Washington for a spiritual perspective from Charleston. Finally, while marriage equality changes the contour of LGBT rights in America, Welton checks in with two advocates about the evolving nature of LGBT rights around the world. The Unconscious Racism in Our Words and on Our Screens While many of us struggled to find some sense, some understanding in the murders in Charleston, Dr. Anthea Butler wrote an incisive commentary in the Washington Post. In a piece titled “Shooters of color are called ‘terrorists and ‘thugs.’ Why are white shooters called ‘mentally ill’?” she discusses the racist bias, whether conscious or unconscious, that she sees pervading our language and the mainstream media today. Butler, a Contributing Editor at Religion Dispatches and a professor of religion and Africana studies, will join Welton this week to expand on her article and to share her thoughts on symbols of racism such as the Confederate flag. Reflecting on the Strength of Faith and Forgiveness in the Aftermath of Charleston Shooting When nine African-Americans were shot and killed in their place of worship last week, many felt angry and vengeful, but the members of the Emanuel AME Church immediately began making statements of forgiveness. The Rev. Ed Kosak and Cookie Washington, who jointly led an interfaith vigil in remembrance of the victims last Saturday at their faith community – Charleston Unity Church – join Welton to discuss the strength of the faith community in Charleston and the ways in which people from different faith backgrounds have been able to come together in support of each other. Washington and Kosak will also share opinions on the discussion of racism and other issues that have surfaced following the shooting. Gay and Muslim: Parvez Sharma Discusses his Journey to Mecca Widely recognized as a leader in both the progressive Muslim and LGBT communities, filmmaker Parvez Sharma has just released his latest documentary, titled A Sinner in Mecca, and he will be joining Welton to talk about his experience while on his religious pilgrimage to the holiest city of Islam. While Islam is known for its strict guidelines on sexuality, young, progressive Muslims are working to evolve within their religion. Sharma will share his impactful journey and his hopes of its effects on the future. What happens at a Pride Festival in a Former Member of the Soviet Union? State of Belief’s own Ray Kirstein attended the Europride festival in Riga, Latvia last weekend, and will share the experience of attending LGBT seminars and a pride parade that had been threatened with violence in a country not known for its tolerance of LGBT people. Ray will discuss the origins of the most pernicious anti-gay attitudes in Eastern Europe, and talk about the most important things he took away from his time in the former Soviet republic.
