In episode 15 of the Platform to Perform Podcast I spoke with the brains behind The Mindful Mover, Phillip and Martina Chubb. I first came across their work on Instagram, where their training footage was flying in the face of conventional wisdom, as they were achieving incredible feats such as planche push ups and one arm chin ups…and then posting about training once a week. As if this wasn’t impressive enough, other feats such as back squatting just shy of double bodyweight, dropping into the middle splits (both of which without any warm up) and my personal favourite, a handstand push up…on gymnastics rings…meant I was desperate to get these two on. With a passion for training so wide, the conversation flowed effortlessly as I got The Mindful Mover’s thoughts on: How to work towards ‘The Big 5’ – exercises which provide the largest amount of ‘free gains’ to other movements without specifically training for them Training for mobility, how to develop it once and avoid wasting time on ‘dedicated’ mobility sessions What the sucker mindset is, and how to avoid it (and other biases) How Phillip and Martina have dispelled myths with their training, such as making improvements in skill and strength when training once a week, achieving static skills, such as a straddle planche, despite never training isometrically (i.e. using static movements) You can follow Phillip and Martina’s work via the below links: @The_mindful_mover http://mindfulmover.com/ mindfulmover.com/newsletter You can follow myself, Todd Davidson, via the following links; Instagram: @todddavidsonp2pcoaching Facebook: Todd Davidson P2P Coaching Platform to Perform Podcast: https://platformtoperform.podbean.com/ Resources Mentioned in the Podcast: Fooled by Randomness by Nassim Taleb Antifragile by Nassim Taleb Black Swan by Nassim Taleb Skin the Game by Nassim Taleb If you feel you are in a position to support the Platform to Perform podcast, any contributions would be truly appreciated https://www.patreon.com/ToddDavidsonp2pCoaching?fan_landing=true
In episode 14 of the Platform to Perform Podcast I was joined by my first international guest, founder of the Youth Athletic Development Academy, in the Sunshine Coast, Australia, Harry Weatherstone. I first came across Harry’s work on Instagram, with his Mini Movers (5-8 year olds), KidFit (9-12 year olds) and his weekly YAD Academy challenges catching my eye. On today’s episode I wanted to get Harry’s thoughts on: What has caused Australia’s 70% increase in injuries requiring knee reconstruction in the past 15 years Coaching considerations when dealing with kids as young as 5 years old How he helps develop a growth mindset in the youth athletes he works with How he develops rhythm, balance, and coordination in children Resources Mentioned in the Podcast Brett Kilka - https://bkbestlife.lpages.co/60-ways-to-play-sales/?fbclid=IwAR2zNk32f_K7PcZANrbM7FCU6Q_nS37cT5H_HfmkMRXFhQUGgPzv1VGAd3A Gary Schofield - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_3SEO7WXER8 Don’t Just Be Different… Be a Difference Maker! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iSrWOj-p5jM Gary Schofield | Conference Presentation Nov 2015 Mike Robertson’s Physical Preparation Podcast - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/physical-preparation-podcast-robertson-training-systems/id1011924486 You can get in touch with Harry Weatherstone personally via: Email: harry.yad.academy@gmail.com Instagram: @coach_HarryW You can check out the Youth Athletic Development Academy via the following links: www.YADacademy.com Instagram @YADacademy You can follow myself, Todd Davidson, via the following links; Instagram: @todddavidsonp2pcoaching Facebook: Todd Davidson P2P Coaching Platform to Perform Podcast: https://platformtoperform.podbean.com/
In episode 13 of the Platform to Perform Podcast I spoke with my Powerlifting coach, Charlie Keen, on 'Powerlifting for the Non-Powerlifter.' Both of us were eager to discuss topics that would be relevant to both strength and conditioning coaches and sports coaches, rather than simply discussing the intricacies of training for a Powerlifting competition. With that in mind, Charlie and I discussed the following topics: Coach-athlete relationships (and how these impact the training written by a coach) The biopsychosocial model for pain How to create mindfulness in your athlete's training The overuse and misapplication of technology in training The controversy and limitations of online training Resources Mentioned in the Podcast https://keencontemplations.blogspot.com/2019/06/questions-from-todd-programming.html Charlie's elaborated thoughts on training implications for 'slow twitch' athletes http://www.greglehman.ca/pain-science-workbooks/ Greg Lehman's Pain Handbook http://www.andygalpin.com/the-body-of-knowledge-podcast Andy Galpin's podcast https://www.reactivetrainingsystems.com/Home/Main Mike Tuchscherer's website https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2yPnikFKQy4 Bottom Up Programming RTS Podcast with Derek Evely https://www.amazon.co.uk/Digital-Minimalism-Living-Better-Technology/dp/0241341132 Digital Minimalism: On Living Better With Less Technology-Cal Newport https://purplespengler.blogspot.com/2019/06/pubmed-was-mistake.html Pub Med was a mistake article You can follow myself, Todd Davidson, via the following links; Instagram: @todddavidsonp2pcoaching Facebook: Todd Davidson P2P Coaching Platform to Perform Podcast: https://platformtoperform.podbean.com/ If you feel you are in a position to support the Platform to Perform podcast, any contributions would be truly appreciated https://www.patreon.com/ToddDavidsonp2pCoaching?fan_landing=true

He is the owner of Athletic Performance Academy (APA) which amongst other things has been providing Strength & Conditioning coaching to Gosling Tennis Academy since 2005. In that time he has had the pleasure to work with some of the best junior tennis players in the world including four players who have been ranked inside the Top 100 WTA or ATP tour. In episode 11 of the Platform to Perform podcast I spoke with Tom Green. I first met Tom at James Baker and Mike Young's LTAD conference in Gloucester, and was keen to learn more about the S&C program he runs as part of his current role as the Head of Athletic Development at St Peters RC High School. As well as the school environment, Tom is also as an academy S&C coach at West Bromwich Albion and Premier League Rugby club, Worcester Warriors, which is why I wanted to talk about the differences in cultures of a school environment compared to professional academy set ups in football and rugby. Besides his coaching roles, Tom is also the youth researcher for Science for Sport, so is well versed when it comes to understanding both research and how to translate the science into coaching practice During the podcast, I picked Tom's brains on: -Incorporating gymnastics and parkour into S&C as a means of combating the limited movement skills that may result from early specialisation -Managing cognitive stress within a school S&C program around exam periods-Why he has found gameplay to be more effective at developing speed in school athletes compared to more 'traditional' speed program You can follow Tom via Twitter @ThomasGreen_1 You can follow myself, Todd Davidson, via the following links; Instagram: @todddavidsonp2pcoachingFacebook: Todd Davidson P2P CoachingPlatform to Perform Podcast: https://platformtoperform.podbean.com/
In episode 10 of the Platform to Perform Podcast, the 2015 International Youth Coach of the year, 6-time World Champion in Taekwondo & Kickboxing and a specialist in youth athletic development, Shane Fitzgibbon. I first came across Shane in 2017, where he presented his thoughts on core training for the youth athlete, at James Baker's Child to Champion Conference. I totally forgot I was hosting a podcast for large portions of today's episode as myself and Shane discussed: -How to extend your influence beyond how your youth athletes behave in the S&C sessions -The importance of the often overlooked perceptual motor skills in building a youth athlete's foundation -How to modify game play to stretch and develop the movement toolbox of youth athletes You can get in touch with Shane by visiting his website: https://shanefitzgibbon.ie/ You can follow myself, Todd Davidson, via the following links; Instagram: @todddavidsonp2pcoaching Facebook: Todd Davidson Platform to Perform Podcast: https://platformtoperform.podbean.com/ Recommended Resources Mentioned in The Podcast: Rob Anderson's Athletic Evolution https://athleticevolution.co.uk/tag/r... On episode 9 of the Platform to Perform Podcast, I had my first guest from the world of football, one of Aston Villa Football Club's first team Strength and Conditioning Coaches, Paddy Moore. Paddy and I discussed: -Checking your ego and understanding where strength and conditioning coaches fit in the high-performance puzzle -Positional profiling in football and how to ensure the physical qualities being developed align with how the manager wants the team to play -Contextual sprinting, and how to develop speed that can be seen on a pitch where it matters, and just not with the timing gates We also describe coach burnout, gratitude and how social media, for all its positives, can actually be a detriment to your own readiness to perform as a coach You can follow myself, Todd Davidson, via the following links; Instagram: @todddavidsonp2pcoaching Facebook: Todd Davidson Platform to Perform Podcast: https://platformtoperform.podbean.com/
In episode 8 of the Platform to Perform Podcast, I spoke with Strength and Conditioning Coach for Scottish Rugby, and founder of Athletic Evolution, Rob Anderson. As the author of 'How to Actually Get a Job in Strength and Conditioning' and host of the Athletic Evolution Conference, Rob and I discuss: mistakes he made when first starting his business what university isn't teaching up and coming S&C coaches how prospective S&C coaches can better develop their employability skill set You can find the last of the remaining tickets to the 2019 Athletic Evolution conference, on June 2nd, at the link below https://www.tickettailor.com/events/e... In episode 7 of the Platform to Perform Podcast, I spoke with languages teacher, sports coach and a good friend of mine, Ben Lucas. Ben gave me the opportunity to coach abroad, in a foreign language, which is something I believe can develop your ability to say only what is absolutely necessary. Among many pedagogical, coaching and education based topics, in this episode, we discuss: -what Ben sees as the problems in the way we assess education (and how he would remedy this) -how sports coaching has impacted his ability to teach in the classroom (and vice versa) -what separates good coaches from great ones (spoiler alert...it's not technical expertise) You can follow myself, Todd Davidson, via the following links; Instagram: @todddavidsonp2pcoaching Facebook: Todd Davidson Platform to Perform Podcast: https://platformtoperform.podbean.com/
In part 2 of my interview with Leander Swimming S&C Coach Jack Lynch, we discuss the grossly misunderstood and poorly applied concept of sport specificity in relation to Swimming On episode 6 of the Platform to Perform Podcast, I spoke with Leander Swim S&C coach Jack Lynch. In part 1 we discussed Jack's thoughts on all things youth athletic development, and in part 2 we dove into the specifics of coaching young swimmers. How do you build a swimmer up from a foundation level? How do you improve a swimmer's 'feel' of the water? Where can strength have the biggest impact on swimming performance Myself and Jack discussed his thoughts on these, and several other, swimming based S&C topics.
