Ten years ago, when you needed a ride across town or to the airport, you might have called a taxi. Now, you're more likely to open an app on your phone. Ridesharing services like Uber and Lyft have been growing at breakneck speed. But the fast growth — and increased focus on profits — has changed the experience for some drivers and riders. It's also prompted some states, including Minnesota, to pass minimum wage guarantees for drivers. MPR News host Angela Davis talks with her guests about how rideshare works and how it's changing. Guests:  Sergio Avedian is senior contributor for The Rideshare Guy, a driver advocacy blog and YouTube channel. He drives for multiple ridesharing and food delivery services in Los Angeles.Said Mohamed has been a rideshare driver for nine years and is a former taxi driver. Since moving to the Twin Cities from southern California three years ago, he's driven over 11,000 rides. He's also an organizer for SEIU Local 26, a union that wants to represent rideshare drivers.

The latest example of bias permeating artificial intelligence comes from the medical field. A new study surveyed real case notes from 617 adult social care workers in the UK and found that when large language models summarized the notes, they were more likely to omit language such as "disabled," "unable" or "complex" when the patient was tagged as female, which could lead to women receiving insufficient or inaccurate medical care. In other news, President Trump no longer thinks Intel's CEO should resign. Trump revealed on Truth Social that he met with Lip-Bu Tan and described it as "a very interesting one." A "FastFeast" driver ends their shift but forgets to log out of the app. On the way home, they crash—and their insurance denies the claim. Why? They were still “on the job.” In the gig economy, one tap can mean the difference between coverage and denial.   Notable Timestamps [ 00:01 ] - The core scenario involves a driver for the delivery app FastFeast who had an accident on the way home after their shift and whose insurance claim was denied because they were still logged into the app. [ 02:07 ] - A ghost kitchen is a delivery-only establishment with no physical storefront that exists solely on delivery apps. Some ghost kitchens are linked to existing restaurants, like one possibly operating out of Chuck E. Cheese kitchens... [ 05:14 ] - Many personal auto policies, including older ones still in use, contain a livery or public conveyance exclusion that can apply if the vehicle is being used for ridesharing. [ 07:15 ] - Applying the livery exclusion may lead to coverage issues when a rideshare driver is actively transporting passengers during an accident. [ 08:10 ] - Under older livery language, it becomes ambiguous if an accident occurs while a driver is merely logged into the app awaiting an assignment but not actively carrying passengers or property. A new pilot program is testing out methods to get certain drivers credentialed to make such drop offs. I learned more about it from Col. Mike Burns, Director of Public Affairs for US Army Forces Command who is in charge of the pilot. He was joined by Col. Chris Church, who is Provost Marshal for Army Forces Command.
