It was a late night of recording here in the Team Player studios because this week's guest loves the grind and keeps her schedule filled at all times. She is one of the more well-rounded guests we have ever brought on the show with interests ranging from Dance and Olympic Lifting to Tackle Football! In one of the more motivational episodes of the show she teaches us to not allow ourselves to be boxed into any one path in life, and shone the light on the importance of Dance Directors and Athletic Trainers in the Coaching Universe. Her story as one of the very few Female High School Head Strength and Conditioning Coaches has been featured on several Houston-area media outlets. Welcome THE Aldine High School's Aislinn Garza to the show! - Growing up in Hebbronville, TX before moving to Katy, TX while still heading back home every other weekend, all holidays, and almost every summer - Her time in high school as a Katy Taylor Pacesetter and the budding rivalry with the Fillies of Kingwood High! - She headed off to Baton Rouge for college at LSU and found a love for Crossfit and Olympic Lifting - Returning home to Katy ISD to teach and coach before connecting with an important mentor and rediscovering exactly what role she wanted to fill - Hilarious stories of learning how to do laundry the "right way" and her future husband "sliding into the DMs" mid-2000s style! - Shoutout Houston Energy! Houston's longest-running Women's Professional Football Team! Listen to Coach recount her tryout process and how much this opportunity means to every member of the team - Forget being our first ever Strength and Conditioning guest on the TPP, or the first ever Dance Director on the show, Aislinn is also the first Team Player Alumnus to make demands and have conditions for coming on the show!! The rest of y'all don't be getting any ideas!! :) In all seriousness, it was as simple as making a switch to play Coach Garza's Mount Rushmore of Coaches she would like to work with instead of our customary Start/Bench/Cuts! Blood Flow Restriction Training has attracted an increasing amount of attention in the last decade in the US. However, work has focused on rehabilitation from musculo-skeletal injuries and improvement in strength and fitness for Olympic and Professional athletes. It is recognized that regular exercise and good nutritional practice are the “medicines” for health and fitness. We can take the lessons from Olympians and incorporate them into our busy lives. We know that regular exercise mitigates the effects of many chronic diseases, but to do so, requires “doses” of exercise that many find impossible to do on a regular basis. Alas, there are a million reasons why we don't incorporate regular exercise into our busy lives. BFR Training is well suited to providing “doable”, safe and effective, robust exercise in a short period of time (15 to 20 minutes), anywhere, anytime for all age groups. Regular BFR Training, with safe and effective equipment and protocols, is the solution for many of the chronic health problems of the nation. Leading BFR expert, Jim Stray-Gundersen, MD calls BFR “anti-aging” medicine. Over the past decade, Jim Stray-Gundersen, MD, has helped pioneer the use of, define the mechanisms of, and implement blood flow restriction training in the US and Europe. Stray-Gundersen saw first hand, the impact of the BFR Modality on the Olympians and the normal population he was training, for increasing power, strength, healing and recovery, improving bone density, improving lean body mass and a number of additional intricate physiologic improvements. Stray-Gundersen has done thousands of applications of BFR on various populations and is considered the leading medical doctor expert on BFR. He is co-founder and co-developer of B Strong Blood Flow Restriction Training Systems - a comprehensive BFR prodcut and training platform, that is based on Stray-Gundersen's background and knowledge, designed for safety and efficacy for all populations to use to benefit from BFR mechanisms. Stray-Gundersen lectures and teaches/certifies Blood Flow Restriction Training Theory and Application to Physical Therapists, Medical Doctors, Chiropractors, Personal Trainers, Occupational Therapists, Professional Strength and Conditioning Coaches, members of the military and Special Forces, as well as the consumer. Stray-Gundersen has also dedicated his career to anti-doping, being the first to do invasive blood testing at the World Championships in Lahti, Finland, in 1989. He has worked with WADA, USADA and has developed the anti doping test called SAFE - SAFE and Fair Events iimplemented in 2002 Olympic Games, considered by some the most aggressive test to detect and deter doping in sport. Stray-Gundersen has served on international medical committees that include the International Olympic Committee, FIFA, International Biathlon Committee, International Ski Federation, the International Skating Union, and the International Cycling Federation Stray-Gundersen. He works with Special Forces, Marines, Army, Navy SEALs and currently serves as the sports science advisor for the US Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA), and is the founder of the SG Performance Medicine Center in Park City, Utah. This week I have the pleasure of bringing Jared Saavedra on the podcast. Jared is the owner of Athlete Ready Albuquerque, Athlete Ready Global, Saavedra properties, and many other new ventures. Learning more about Jared's career in Strength & Conditioning was a pleasure. We cover the development of his gym Athlete Ready, the difference between elite athletes in competition & elite athletes in the gym, as well as how to build athlete buy in within your coaching. This was a great interview for Strength & Conditioning Coaches to listen to. Listening to how Jared approaches his day to day really shows the level of understanding that strength & conditioning is about dealing with people first. Understanding who it is you're working with and how to best help them goes so far beyond simply sets and reps in your coaching. As Jared said in the interview, no athlete is ever going to reminisce with you on "remember when I got that 300 lbs squat, etc. etc." They are going to remember you being there for them, listening to them and creating a good environment for them. For athletes out there listening to this, Jared's answer on how you set yourself apart and succeed at the top level is simple. It's consistency & doing the little things outside of the gym that will help you get there.Learning what it takes to become an elite athlete is difficult. One of the keys to the Athlete Ready approach is time management. Understanding how to make the best use of your time allows young athletes to make more out of their days and as a result, progress that much more, that much faster. The concept of planning your season basically means to figure out how to make the most of your time. In your busier times, instead of simply eliminating training, or other activities you know you need to be doing, plan out how you will be able to most effectively accommodate all the priorities in your life. If you don't know where to start, do NOT be afraid to talk to someone and get help. We are all in this together.Thank YOU for tuning in to another episode of The Elite Development Podcast! Burnout among personal trainers is up. Are you at risk? This post shares a new study published in the Journal of Strength & Conditioning Research – ahead of print version. I've written for the fitness industry for over 20 years, published in places like Fitness Management, IDEA Health & Fitness Professionals, and NSCA's Strength & Conditioning Journal. While I was still lecturing in Kinesiology at Iowa State University, I often found statistics from the Labor Force demonstrating very high job satisfaction among fitness professionals. I have to include that this was at a time that more fitness jobs were still part time. Fewer individuals were actually training at even the 32 hours lumped into full time work. Many included were fitness instructors teaching a few hours a week, and personal trainers included in those statistics were self-declared fitness professionals. Full Time? Today, or pre-pandemic, more trainers are employed full time. Many trainers are at risk for job-related addiction which often goes undetected and because of that is promoted. Consider it yourself, what's the stereotypical trainer like? Chicken and broccoli? Protein shakes, Lululemons, always exercising and eating perfectly? Never misses a workout, often puts clients ahead of family or friends. Allows clients to dictate work schedule. Sound familiar? Reasons for Burnout Among Personal Trainers Work-related stressors for trainers during the pandemic included: Less access to clients if they were in an in person only service delivery Working 100% on commission for training sessions and or experienced layoffs Need to adopt new training services and delivery options for multiple revenue streams without the education, experience, or skills to execute quickly Inability or unwillingness to pivot quickly to adapt to the new and unique problems people faced during the pandemic and new need for marketing strategies that reached them Those stressors likely spilled over burnout among personal trainers personal lives. Financial burden and new home life changes affected all of us as home became work, gym, leisure time, and school for all of us and limited our additional sources of social support. I'm including results from abstract in the show notes as well as the link to it. My goal is to provide you with options and suggestions for you and for your team that have been proven to support burnout. Starting Your Own Business? Surround Yourself with Support In times when you may or may not be able or choose to gather in person, I hope that these will help you. One thing that definitely can, in a time for many they've taken a risk and begun their own business is knowing that while many suffered losses during the pandemic, for others in fitness 2020 has seen a huge growth. It's for those willing to remember that where there is a problem and a solution, there is always a business model. If instead your burnout comes from work addiction… where you're a trainer who finds herself (or himself) constantly reading, watching, taking courses, in addition to doing your own fitness workouts, seeking the best nutritional advice, and never breaking for your personal interests beyond your career vocation. What hobbies outside of fitness did you love, what people have you stopped spending time with, what activities do you love and lose track of time doing? Pre vs Post Covid Results Seventy-one subjects completed the survey before March 2020; after which, a worldwide pandemic (i.e., COVID-19) occurred possibly affecting employment workloads and work-related stress. Thus, post hoc analyses were conducted to assess differences in burnout scores pre-COVID-19 and post-COVID-19. Within PTs, 33.0% reported personal burnout, 29.6% reported work-related burnout, and 17.4% reported client-related burnout. Higher levels of burnout, across all scales, were observed in those who were PTs, women, unmarried, living alone, would not choose to be a fitness professional again, and took the survey post-COVID as compared to their respective counterparts. Findings suggest that fitness professionals are not exempt from the stressors associated with personal and occupational burnout. Strength and conditioning coaches and PTs may reduce the risk of burnout by increasing social support, continuing education, and allowing for personal-care time with the intention of buffering these factors. Social Support Friends outside the fitness community Fellow trainers and colleagues within the fitness community Mastermind groups – to avoid burnout within personal trainers get support growing your business from people who have done what you want to do or are still doing it is required – no one does it alone Continuing Education Do it to completion – for many fitness pros the shiny object syndrome means purchasing courses they never finish which can actually increase feelings of burnout and overwhelm Determine the value of con ed based on: 1) what it will do for your revenue and 2) what you're most interested in and 3) how will it improve the quality of training you provide to your clients Plan your con ed so you're not forced to take multiple courses at one time, at the end of your recert period when there is pressure Personal care/Self care Do seek leisure time content beyond your work. Look, most trainers have science books on their nightstand. Find books, movies, and rekindle hobbies you'd forgotten. During the pandemic I personally took up reading “fluffy” novels again instead of heavier science-based content. I read Nicholas Sparks and similar books before bed, a complete diversion from the heavy work and political climate we're in. Right now I'll take a predictable happy ending any day. Schedule your breaks so work tasks aren't an option. I know a fitness owner who goes to mass at noon most days. Find a way to recharge your batteries before they're dead. Make (even online) dates with friends to complete tasks. You don't even have to be working on the same thing but knowing that a friend is also focused on a project and you're touching base again in an hour, keeps you on track. Rethink your workouts. During the pandemic when other areas are cranked up the tough workout you think you need may need to take a backseat to less. Before you hit the wall, consider getting exercise instead of driving yourself to illness. I know a trainer who thinks he's fit because he runs 10 miles most days. Honestly, he's sick more than most people I know. That's not fitness, especially not in this climate. Modify for the Times I'm an 8-time Ironman. I've been swimming for 30-40 minutes a few times a week and doing a 30-minute weight training session a couple of times a week along with a lot of walking. Train for the energy you need instead of training as if you're not in a pandemic, don't have stress. For women especially, less is more if you want to avoid hormonal disruption that actually leads to sleep issues, and weight gain. Burnout Among Personal Trainers Burnout among personal trainers is up and job satisfaction is down the greater number of hours you work or perceive you work even if you're not earning money. This is a pivotal time in history and in fitness. You have a unique and never to be experienced again opportunity because the pandemic has created additional problems that require solutions for those who are willing to go beyond just providing online classes and training via Skype and Zoom. Are you ready to create multiple sources of revenue? Be somewhere else and still be providing value and earning revenue. Click here for details. For this weeks episode I had the opportunity to speak with someone who has a position that any Canadian Strength and Conditioning Coach would love. He is the strength and conditioning coordinator for the San Jose Sharks, Mike Potenza. We discuss how he and his team evaluate athletes and track workload in order to optimize performance within season and maximize adaptations during the off-season. Mike is currently in his 15th season as the San Jose Sharks Strength and Conditioning Coordinator. He's responsible for the team's overall strength and conditioning programs -- including the creation of individualized postseason workout programs and assistance in the rehabilitation efforts for all injured players. Before coming to San Jose, Potenza served as the strength and conditioning coach for the University of Wisconsin men's and women's hockey teams, both of which were 2006 NCAA National Champions. There, he worked with former Sharks center Joe Pavelski. He has a Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Exercise Science from Springfield College and Master's degree in Human Movement Science from Boston University. Potenza completed an assortment of strength and conditioning coaching and internship experiences before his time at Wisconsin. At the University of Miami (Fla.), he served as a weight training, speed and post-workout coach for the perennial nationally-ranked Hurricanes football team. While earning his master's, Potenza instructed professional, amateur and collegiate athletes at Mike Boyle Strength and Conditioning Mike has been involved in the development of some amazing products, including Optimizing Adaptation and Performance, which he co-created with Kevin Neeld and James Lavalle. He is also the president of the Strength and Conditioning Association of Professional Hockey and part of a group that put together Pro Hockey Strength dot com. A site that houses the best of the best from Strength and Conditioning Coaches across the NHL and AHL. Highly recommended if you train any level of hockey athlete. I've rambled on for long enough, so let's dive in.
On this episode I interviewed Kaiti Jones who is a Senior Performance Coach at the University of Louisville. The goal of The Win Your Life Podcast is to illuminate the intersection between prevention and performance. The fitness industry is focused on performance and not always concerned with prevention. On the other hand, our health care system is focused, by necessity, on combatting the overwhelming amount of disease, illness and injury in our society. At the intersection of prevention and performance, there is a group of coaches, medical professionals, business leaders, athletes, and thought leaders that are working to help you Win Your Life. In this series, we are addressing the idea of 'Universal Prescriptions', the notion that there is a best way for us all to exercise, eat, sleep, breath and live. In this episode we are discussing whether or not fitness programming should be customized to the individual and why with Ashley Stiles, the Director of Operations for The Power House MN, and NHL Strength & Conditioning Coach, Christian Burrus. Christian, Ashley & Max all work together on the Adapt Fitness app that provides customized programming on a daily basis based on goals, training history, equipment, daily recovery and how much time you have to train. They need to sleep.” 20:52“The award that means the most to me is the NSCA’s Lifetime Achievement award.” 22:56“The great ones adjust.” 25:44“We have 14 Registered Strength and Conditioning Coaches at Nebraska.” 29:45
