Francis talks with Chad about a novel "training" method that he has recently been exploring to improve his coordination, response times and mental acuity. A shooter's ability to see, interpret and respond to downrange effects is critical for improving at certain levels. However, our sport is not unique in this aspect: nearly all sports demand some variation on this theme. From baseball to golf to hockey to Formula 1 racing, high level athletes tend to have incredible hand-eye coordination along with the ability to process information quickly and respond accordingly. The hosts discuss whether this can be trained indirectly without pulling a trigger... tune in to hear their experiences on training mental agility and processing speed.

We've all been there. You're at the park or on a playdate with your mom friends and their babes who are about the same age. You're trying not to - you really are - but you can't help but notice that your friend's baby is crawling or walking or doing something that your child is not yet doing. And they are the same age.You try not to panic. But the truth is, we've never done this before. We don't know what is considered “normal” and what isn't when it comes to so many things about our children, particularly their developmental milestones. I'm talking about things like rolling over, crawling, walking and other gross motor skills your pediatrician asks you about at every check up.Today, Dr. Brita DeStefano helps take the guesswork out of those developmental skills. Dr. DeStefano is board certified as a pediatric specialist and focuses her work primarily on babies between 0 and 2 years old where much of these developmental motor skills occur. We talk about lip ties and tongue ties as well, sleep positions, flat heads and helmets, and so much more.Get ready to feel empowered and to truly understand what's going on for your child in those very formative years so that you can work together to make this time enjoyable. Their motor skills are more developed, they can run pretty well and wash and dry their hands. But they still don't have proper awareness of dangers like cars, dogs, and especially water. Do you think outdoor play is associated with better motor skills? It may SEEM like a no-brainer, but often research is needed to prove something known by therapists for a long time! This article needed more than a 2 minute takeaway- so I'm doing a whole episode to break it down. The study examined the relationship between childhood outdoor play and motor skills in 2-7 year old children in the country of Finland. In this episode, I discuss the findings (one of them is rather perplexing) and suggest ways we can apply this research to our work as nature-based therapists. We'll discuss: The purpose, study design, and measurement tools used in this study of over 1000 children in Finland. The differences in outdoor play among children living in metropolitan vs. rural areas Surprising correlations found in the research Takeaways from this study you can use in your own practice Resources from this episode: Is Outdoor Play Associated With Better Motor Skills? Welcome back to part 2 of my interview with Dr. Edythe Strand. If you haven't listened to part 1, be sure to go back and listen to get the full scoop. Edythe is a very important leader in her field. In addition to the Dynamic Assessment, she also researched and developed a critical treatment for children with severe apraxia, Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing. DTTC, as it is known, is an innovative treatment in which a hierarchy of cues is used to demonstrate and initiate motor-speech skills in children with apraxia. In most therapies, we are constantly taking data, every meeting or every session. However, the Dynamic Assessment and DTTC is such an involved, hands-on, and therapist-led treatment data and scoring doesn't need to take place at every visit. In Edythe's work at Mayo, they would take data every 3 visits using multidimensional scoring. She notes that the importance of data is not as prevalent during an intensive treatment like this as opposed to when she is doing research. When working on something as important to communication as language, whether the child is typical or has autism, the type of language, the number of words, and the words that are chosen to work on are so important. Especially in the cases of students with severe apraxia and autism, functional and fundamental words during practice and DTTC are crucial. In this episode, Dr. Edythe Strand touches on the commonalities between apraxia and other diagnoses and disorders such as autism. She explains all of the research, practice, and genuine desire to help kids with severe apraxia that has gone into her work. She is such a wealth of information and has provided so many great links and references for this episode, so be sure to check them out! What's Inside:What is DTTC Treatment?Taking data with DTTC and Dynamic Assessment.Choosing important words for treatment. Is there a connection between Apraxia and Autism?  Mentioned In This Episode:ABA Speech: HomeChild Apraxia TreatmentApraxia-kids: HomeVideos for Parents and Clinicians:Overview of possible causes and types of problems in speech developmentDefinitions and Descriptions of Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS)Examples of different levels of severity in Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS)Differentiating Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) from other types of speech sound disordersDiagnosis of Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) Treatment of Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS)How parents can help their child with Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS)Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS): Other resourcesChildhood Apraxia of Speech:  Information for Parents5-hour general course on CAS or the Once Upon a Time Foundation, through the University of Texas, Dallas.Childhood Apraxia of Speech -- by Dr. Edythe Strand, Ph.d. “When we think about exercise in general as sort of a hermetic stressor, it just makes sense to think about, if you're going to do it at a higher intensity and have these repeated hormetic stressors, you're going to get an overall greater response. It's a lot of the same mechanisms that we see for exercise causing a lot of great brain health and cognitive benefits, but we're just seeing it to a greater degree.” - Julie Foucher-Urcuyo, MD   In this special edition of Pursuing Health Pearls, I'm joining Dr. Matt Dawson and Dr. Mike Mallin at the Wild Health Brain Optimization Summit for an interview-style discussion focused on how high intensity interval training (HIIT) can optimize brain health. The Brain Optimization Summit featured doctors, scientists, biohackers, and nootropics professionals discussing lifestyle habits and methods to improve mental performance, memory formation, concentration, and professional creativity. This was a really fun conference, and they're planning to hold another similar conference on athletic optimization which I plan to participate in, so stay tuned.  I'm also excited to share more with you about Matt and Mike when I interview them in next week's episode so stay tuned for that as well! In this episode we discuss: The definition of high intensity interval training (HIIT) How HIIT relates to brain health and why it's advocated to improve brain health How HIIT can reduce risk of stroke and improve stroke recovery rates The amount of HIIT required to receive health benefits The mechanism behind getting brain health benefits from HIIT High intensity exercise versus moderate intensity exercise The impact of HIIT on dementia, depression, Parkinson's, and ADHD How to minimize the risks of HIIT How to safely introduce it to a sedentary individual How much HIIT is too much? The target heart rate for a sedentary ramp up How to cycle HIIT into your weekly routine Quick workout recommendations Supplements to help with joint health Thoughts on fasted HIIT A Burpee Challenge!  5 rounds of:1 minute of burpees, 1 minute of rest You can follow Wild Health on their website, podcast, Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube.
